Everyone who knows me knows I'm a HUGE horror fanatic, and this box set is just what I need to scratch that itch. Don't worry, it's a figurative itch. The Goosebumps series is FRIGHTfully good, and the TV show was even better, even if it did come on BEFORE Big Bad Beetle-Borgs and not after, which would have been the place of honor that it deserved. If only the TV studios weren't under the thumbs of certain political and religious groups which shall remain nameless. Anyway, this box set is SPOOKtacular, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to have a FRIGHTfully good time. Oops...I already did that one.

Still Not All That Impressed

Here we are at the second in the Mostly Ghostly series, and I'm still not all that impressed with it. What I didn't like in the first one carries over to Have you Met My Ghoulfriend?, in spades! The characters are all very flat and stereotypical...the father and brother only becoming bigger bullies, the mom more annoying, even the teachers and principal are just caricatures...there because they have to be, not really fleshed out or made believable or interesting.

In this second volume, Max is STILL having issues and Max and Tara are still appearing and disappearing without much control over it. Phears is back and badder than ever...you'd thank Max would run from any and all animals at this point! Max is under threat of being "broken" by a ghoul if he doesn't nark on Nicky and Tara. You know, Phears seems incredibly dense, no one actually knows where the parents are, yet he doesn't get the message even after incredible doses of pain to his detainees...it just feels too drawn out...a ghost that's been around for a long time and is so very powerful ought to be a bit brighter! Disappointing also is the stark admission that Max is ok and loved by his father without question for the brief and shining moment he does well at a soccer match...tisk, tisk...was this really necessary? I'm only on book 2 and I'm sick of the poor Max, he's so misunderstood shtick. I'd like to see the author move on from this and flesh out (no pun intended) the mystery of Nicky and Tara and give Max some guts for goodness sake!

For the most part, the book is fairly predictable, but I did like the ending...I won't give it away here, but it was nice to see Max take some initiative and get one over one someone else for a change! I'll continue on for a few more and see if the series improves any...I sure hope it does, because I'd hate to give it up before finding out what really happened to Nicky and Tara (and their parents) because underneath what I don't like so far, I think there's a really good scary story! I give it a B-.

Great!

Phears is back. And this time he's brought a friend, A berserker ghoul. The friend hasn't come to play with Max. The friend has come to stay with Max. And with the Ghoul inside him. Max is one wild and crazy guy.

If your kids hate reading or love it, get these books. These books will keep their attention and have them coming back for more. If you are trying to get your kids into chapter books, get these. RL Stine has done it again. Great Books (all of them)

I have enjoyed watching my 10 year old boy read this series. He thinks this book series is funny and has story ideas that are on his level. He has also enjoyed the Mostly Ghostly series by R.L Stine. (all eight books!) It is the first series that I have seen him read through faster than any other books in the past. It is great to see your child reading for fun and not because he is being told to read. I would recommend this series if you have a child who doesn't always "want" to read. This series may draw him in and get him wondering what is on the next page!

Rotten School will have young boys laughing

Review Date: 2006-03-02
This is the fourth book in Stine's newest series "Rotten School". Very humorous and full of that toilet humor young boys are so fond of, this book will appeal to fans of "Captain Underpants" or the books by James Marshall. The fourth grade football team at Rotten School known as the "Rotten Apples," has never won a football game. At least not until Jennifer Ecch joins the team, wanting to be close to her boyfriend Bernie Bridges. He refers to her as the Nightmare Girl, but if she can get the team to win with her large size and blocking abilities, that's just fine with him. In fact, if she can lead the team to the National Championship he will even wear the 10 sweaters she plans to knit for him that read, " Bernie loves Jen" and he'll get a date with the beautiful cheerleader April-May June. Unfortunately after winning every game Bernie realizes that the last game must be played against the roughest team, the "Bone Breakers" and he sets out to find a way to sabotage their winnings. Illustrated in black and white line drawings with washes of gray and includes a map of the Rotten School campus. The book is chock full of stereotypical characters - the cheerleader, the rich kid, the athlete, the geek - which fit perfectly with the style of the book. Humor abounds with names like R.U. Dumm Football Field and Headmaster Upchuck, illustrations of the Hammerhead Sharks showing their helmets in the shape of hammerhead sharks, and puns throughout. What boy is not going to love this?

I think this is a good book. The best part is that you get to pick three things to take along with you. I think that's fun. But there is one thing I don't like: You know how it's a "there's only one way out!" book? Ypu think the book would tell you when you've reached the one good ending. It's so hard to figure it out yourself! but it's still a good book! And finally, remember, READER BEWARE, YOU CHOOSE THE SCARE! And also remember, THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY OUT! ...

Quick Reading But Good

The only problem I had with the book was that all the stories are kind of short. It doesn't take too long which in some ways is good but then you have no more to read and have to find something else. I personally like for books to take up my time. The stories were good though a couple weren't your tipical fear street.

I've recently re-read this collection almost 3 years after the first time. Let me tell you, it only took 3 days (probably because it was after exams)! They're easy reading but shouldn't be read by young kids, because they gave me the chills. If you've grown up with Goosebumps but they're starting to bore you, this series is the next step up.

The best is probably The Face. It's twists and turns will leave you not wanting to put it down! Next comes The Confession and not far behind lies What Holly Heard. I'd say TC and WHH are just about equal, but TC has more twists.

If you're bored and would like an interesting night, pick these up. They're not as scary as a Stephen King novel, of course, but for teens they'll definately do!

You can't keep a good book on the shelf!

Review Date: 2008-06-22
Jovial Bob Stine meets (shudder) R.L. Stine in this new series called Rotten School, an elementary boarding school for boys and girls. The Teacher From Heck (Book 8) features a super duper sneaky water fight between two dorms, some battles even taking place in the classroom behind the teacher's back. Mrs. Heine gets in the way, gets soaked, and gives up with these kids. She asks for a transfer to another grade and dorm. The new teacher hails from a town called Heck, and he is really strict and takes no nonsense from the misbehaving students. Mr. Skruloose even threatens expulsion for the rottenest ones! Now Bernie and his gang not only have to win the water fight, but they need to get rid of the teacher from Heck and get Mrs. Heine back, since she is usually totally oblivious to everything. Situations occur that are true in real life, as well as unlikely riotous dilemmas. That's the spooky part of this Stine series--the actions of these zany characters can be horribly real. Told in the first person by Bernie, it is well-written with excellent grammar, punctuation, textual variations, and is loaded with plenty of gross and corny boy-humor. Aptly and engagingly (and hysterically) illustrated by Trip Park, this series will appeal to reluctant and avid readers alike.

My 8 yr old loves it!

What 8 year old doesn't like gross stuff and stories about bodily functions. He laughs and it gets him to read. We bought the first rotten school book at a book store in an airport and are now pre ordering each one. He can't wait for the next one!

These Kids Make Dennis the Menace Look Angelic!

They finally did it. Bernie and his pals at Rotten School have driven Mrs. Heinie out of their dorm and out of their class. Her replacement is Mr. Skruloose, and he's all military! Four hours of homework seven days a week, no slouching, no sucking up? This guy is NUTS! With Bernie's mortal enemy, Sherman Oaks, claiming victory to the Water War, this Skruloose dude has got to go! Now, the problem is how to get rid of this dude and bring back Mrs. Heinie...

R.L. Stine, famous for his Fear Street, Goosebumps, and Mostly Ghostly series has moved beyond frightening kids to making them hurl with laughter. No good can come of Bernie's antics, and that's the way he wants it. Crammed full of crude humor and mischievous pranks, The Teacher from Heck will appeal to kids tired of sappy do-good stories.

Some parents, however, will take exception to ideas like the dog used to squirt water out of its butt, water blasting the clothes of another fourth grader, and a headmaster named Upchuck. If kids and parents are okay with the "Captain Underpants" and "Farting Dog" series, then this will be a heck of a read. If easily offended, however, another title might be more appropriate.

Do you like to be scared, not just for fun but half to death? The main character Lizzy is supposed to be the calm one but even she is scared, especially after she visits the doom slide and the house of mirrors. There is something too real about the rides, something too scary.
