Growing Up At Grossinger'sReview Date: 2008-07-17
who has lived a most fascinating life and shares it so well with all of us. Thank you, Tania!
A poignant and entertaining memoirReview Date: 2008-07-11
Tania Grossinger had a childhood that many people only dream of: growing up in a famous resort hotel in the Catskill Mountains of New York, surrounded by celebrities, eating in the hotel dining room, even playing trumpet with the jazz band. The downside of this poignant memoir is Tania's relationship with her elegant mother, a distant member of the Grossinger hotel family, who was widowed shortly after Tania was born. Mother and daughter eventually ended up living at the hotel, as a matter of economic necessity, and Tania spent her youth as a "hotel brat," sleeping in a series of temporary quarters on the grounds of the Grossinger resort complex.
This engaging book is filled with stories about the stars who worked and played at Grossinger's: Eddie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Elizabeth Taylor, Buddy Hackett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Milton Berle, Zero Mostel, Eddie Cantor, Jerry Lewis, Jayne Mansfield, Rocky Marciano, Jackie Robinson. But Tania's story is much more than just another celebrity memoir. Told from the point of view of a young girl coming of age in the 1940s and 1950s, it combines social history of the Borscht Belt with social commentary about the times, along with the personal story of this precocious child who entered Brandeis University as a freshman on scholarship when she was only 15 years old and who went on to become an accomplished author and journalist.
Originally published in 1975 and reissued in 2008, Growing Up at Grossinger's is an entertaining and informative book that's as fresh today as when it was first written. The author holds your interest from start to finish: once you begin reading it, you won't want to put it down. Highly recommended.
Everyone has a story, but not everyone can turn it into artReview Date: 2008-07-12
Everyone does indeed have a story, but unfortunately, many have the mistaken idea that anyone can put words onto a page and be an author. I beg to differ; it is clear to me that not everyone can tell their tale in a reader-friendly, carefully articulated and intelligent way that keeps the reader unwilling to put it down. Tania has done just that.
I spent every summer of my childhood in Grossingers and, therefore, wanted to read Tania's book. Through her memoire, she has not only opened the floodgates of a hundred forgotten people and places, she has given herself to the reader as only an artist can.

Ignited my mind with India's Vision 2020Review Date: 2007-07-29
The book doesn't just share the 'findings' & the 'vision', but also proposes recommendations & actions to realize the dream. It will be a great eye opener for many of us (Indians). The authors request Indians to avoid pessimism in every form. The book also highlights that "Irrespective of the roles, responsibilities and industry that you work in, you can make a difference. You can help India to become a developed country. Even a small action from every individual brings in a collective improvement".
I would recommend everyone to read this book & share India's Vision 2020.
Good, but not as much expected.Review Date: 2002-07-08
It gives some insight about the complexity involved in building a true nation.
The bad part is the editing, sentences gets repeated.
some of the paragraphs are copied same mutiple times
in a chapter, it feels like the rhetoric political speech.
Torch Bearer For India in New MillenniumReview Date: 1999-10-13
The areas identified ranges from Food & Agriculture to High Tech areas including Strategic Industries. Enabling Infrastructure suggestions viability of inter-linkages between various sectors.
The book has sensitised the younger generation specially scientist/technologist to look ahead in technology development so that rapid changes in many sectors of economy are accomplished.
The publication contain well-defined targets so that active role could be played by all concerned including Industries, R&D personnel, Academia, Government as well as non-Governmental sectors.
I have strong conviction that the accomplishment of targets by each and every one in respective field as contained in the book will surely make India self-reliant and prosperous (A DEVELOPED INDIA) by early next century.
Vision with passionReview Date: 2003-06-24
While this paints a grim scenario, the achievements in various sectors that have put us on the radar screen of technologically developed nations needs to be highlighted. India, a country with abundant natural resources is respected for what has been achieved in areas like self-sufficiency in food grains, a strong nuclear deterrence, a large technological and scientific work force and giant strides in our programs in the core sectors of the economy.
Consider this: India, a country where poverty is a thing of the past and all her citizens are healthy and educated by 2010; India, the fourth largest and developed economy by 2020. This book shows us the way. This is a mission to build on our strengths; the strength of over a billion people who are committed to succeed. It is written with an in-depth understanding of the problems on hand given the vast experience of the authors. What makes this book to stand out from the rest of the reports on similar issues is the true passion and urgency to succeed with nationalistic pride. Each chapter deals with one important sector of growth with focus on implementation and cross-sectoral linkages. Technology for progress with a human face is a common thread across the book. All citizens, particularly the more fortunate and better educated have a major role in the road ahead.
As head of state, a great Indian scientist who ignites our passion is now at the helm of this mission. The country needs more Kalams and not Salaams in the North and South Blocks of New Delhi to realize this vision.

The Human Side of the Temple of TransportationReview Date: 2007-01-06
The author gives us all the facts and figures about this station, from it's planning, short life, and needless destruction. However she also paints the human picture of this building, and in doing so lets us understand how the public allowed this building to slip away.
The opening of Penn Station was celebrated during the final years of the Gilded Age, acted as shelter to thousands during the Great Depression, and it served as a virtual military base during the WW II years.
To the multitudes of returning vets, and their famalies, the railroads and Penn Station represented the past, and times that they all would rather forget. Remember back then there was not the mental health counselling available to the returning soldiers, and one way they coped was to simply forget the past, and all that it contained.
In this book we see that the stations fate was sealed with VJ Day, and the social changes that started to take shape with WW II's end.
By the 1950's, Airplanes and Interstate Highways were in, Railroads were out. Yet at least in the NYC area, commuter trains still played an important role that never went away. The beautiful building was allowed to decay, and was altered by a private company without any accontability required to the public.
By the early 1960's some of the public finally woke up, and NYC's Landmark Preservation Committee was formed, by it was too late for the "Temple of Transportation".
This book also contains an excellent compliment of photos, including a number from the 4 year, yes, four year period it took to destroy the station.

Looking back at New York's lost treasureReview Date: 2004-06-27
Now looking back, through films and books, I understand what it was all about. "The Late, Great Pennsylvania Station" by Lorraine B. Diehl is the best book on the subject that I've come across. Her analysis of the rise and fall of McKim's great station is both awe-inspiring and heart-breaking. The smattering of beautiful photographs is a plus, as well. Penn Station's demise, of course, could be regarded solely as a loss for the city but, as Ms. Diehl explains, the real legacy of the destruction was the enormous preservation/conservation movement that followed. In the aftermath, so many other buildings were spared a similar fate.
There are those who say that the people behind Penn Station's demolition were justified (Ms. Diehl rightly avoids villifying anyone). The apologists for the destruction claim that Penn Station was too big, in the wrong place, and was in the red. The Empire State Building was erected ten blocks south of the midtown business area and three miles north of the Wall Street district. It was a very big building and rarely had over 50% occupancy until the 1950s, when it finally began earning money. Should it have been knocked down too?

A native New Yorker myself, I could not imagine my city without Grand Central, for instance, or SoHo, Central Park or the historic area of Chelsea and the West Village. Some things are worth preserving.
