A very exciting book.

It was the three different strips of montages of photographs across the front cover that immediately caught my eye. The top montage depicts various wetlands, beneath that are different underwater scenes and below that the African plains - from which a large lion leaps out towards the reader. These proved to be just 3 examples of the 14 panoramic fold-out pages of different habitats found inside the book. With the book being approximately A4 size, it means that each fold-out is the same size as four sheets of A4 paper - placed side by side.

The 14 habitats depicted are; Taiga, Tundra & Polar, Oceans, Coastlines, Swamps & Mangroves, Temperate Grassland, Temperate Forest, Savannah, Rain Forest, Mountains, Rivers & Lakes, Deserts, Scrublands and Corals. Each of these sections is supported by some first rate and instructive text, excellent photography and graphics which all melt together into the most informative description of the whole.

I really cannot imagine a better book to explain the different habitats of the world - thus making this book essential reading by all those with an interest in the subject. Surely that means all of us?

Stacy Keach is magnificent. The rocky relationships in this production are so life-like! You can feel what's going on and you can relate to it.

Engaging--Ideal for the first-time science fiction reader!

Review Date: 2005-10-27
After reading this, I am no longer afraid of science-fiction. Nor am I afraid of biological annihilation--I think I'd like to be a splice.

M. Sahm writes in a way that engages the brain. At the same time, he expertly weaves enough reality into his story so that the reader is plagued with the idea that something of this nature might really happen. He adds an element of intrigue--the license plate chapter headings, occasional artwork, and the hidden captions, phrases, and ideas that make you wonder whether certain people in this story are really a work of fiction or not.

Only he knows for sure...the rest of us are left to wonder. It's that feeling that captures the reader, along with the personalities of Serico, Amaretta, Tiberius Tagonist, and Def Mechlin. I found myself rooting for Serico throughout the entire book!

I anxiously await further publications.

What ethnography can do for you
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-07
Asking and Listening is a short (107 page) text on ethnography - studying cultures first-hand and writing about them. It is written for college students in cultural anthropology, but it will be useful to anyone who wants to know more about ethnography. I have used this book in a course on ethnography at least five times now. It has been an ideal introduction to the course, and to the book-length ethnographies that students will read and study. The book begins with a history of the development of ethnography as a research strategy and as a genre of writing. It raises some critical issues concerning studying and writing about other cultures. And it concludes with new and emerging applications of ethnography. The main theme of the book is that reading ethnographies can help the student to better understand and adapt to the global village, offering insights not only into other cultures but also into one's own culture and oneself. The writing is clear, to the point, and engaging. The content is not only well-informed but wise.

Extremely interesting combination of contemporary photographs and traditional stories. The photographs complement the text and evoke the atmosphere of the telling of the stories quite beautifully. I found the book fascinating.

Barb Wire Rocks!

Truly a book written with great care, thought, dignity, and creativity. Barb Wire is not a well known comic book, just the corny flick with Pamela Anderson as Barb, but she plys her part well. She even won the Worst New Actress award for it!WOW!!! Pam is going places, I can tell. First Baywatch, then the honeymoon tape, Home Improvement, and now this? Wow...what will she come up with next? A book? Maybe a disguised autobiography called "Star???"

Excellent book, if the other book, Barns: Living in Converted and Reinvented Spaces is the ying, then this book is the yang. A good inspirational design book if you're interested in reusing an old barn for modern day use and staying within the original design. The text is interesting and informative with the accompanying photos following along with the text. The pictures are overall excellent, sharp, clear, in detail and professionally done, with very very few exceptions. Some buildings are shown with structural drawings that help visualize the internal timber frame or stone structure with the accompanying photogaphs. The authors seems to be a die hard traditionalist, very critical and at times mildly insulting to designers that chose to remodel the old barns in the modern way and deviating from what the original builders did. But at times understanding that the modern style is a better fate than total destruction of a old old structure.

Wonderful Book To Introduce Your Children to Shakespere
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-03
When searching for a child friendly book of stories based on William Shakespere's works I came across this little gem. The book is authored by Edith Nesbit, best known for her books "The Railway Children, Five Children and It and The Enchanted Castle." Edith has done a beautiful job of translating Shakespere's works into stories which will engage children in the classic works such as "A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet and King Lear." This is a delightful way to introduce your children to the world of William Shakespere.

This haggadah is completely Jewish, yet universal in scope. It is quite easy to use and it makes the Passover experience meaningful for both Jews and non-Jews alike. It is perfect for mixed groups of all ages.
