Buffalo Jones had to deal with horrible weather, a pack of wolves, and other difficulties in his quest to capture buffalo calves. The clever way he outwitted the wolves adds a surprising twist to an exciting story. Especially good for readers 8 to 12 who like true adventure, but older readers (including adults) will enjoy it, too.

Fast-paced and colorful, this book describes one of Jones' expeditions in which he captured buffalo calves to create a captive herd and preserve the species. The difficulties Jones had to overcome make exciting reading, especially the ingenious way he protected the calves from wolves. Great for ages 7 to 10, but older and younger folks will enjoy it, too.

An intelligent, and lavish tribute to the architects

Acanthus Press has packaged an extensive collection of archival photography with the lucid and expert essays of four appreciative observers of Beaux-Arts and Eclectic architecture to produce this monumental, two-volume tribute to John Carrere and Thomas Hastings. The architectural quality of the firm's work is reflected in the lavish production values assigned to book. This seems particularly apt since since Carrere & Hastings included among their commissions the New York Public Library. The quality of the Gilded Age firm's work was matched by the volume and range of its output: hotels, retail and office buildings, country estates, city mansions, theatres, institutional buildings, churches, monuments and exhibitions. Through these many projects, Carrere & Hastings put their stamp on the face of the nation and helped define an age. In addition to preserving the memory of many buildings that have long ago been replaced by less aesthetically pleasing structures, the text surprises with insights and vignettes on C&H, the period in which the firm operated and even public policy. Essayist Charles D. Warren's contribution on civic architecture provides an excellent introduction to the evolution of policy and practice in the awarding of architectural contracts on government buildings, beginning with the Tarnsey Act of 1893. Essayist William Morrison, who has made a specialty of the study of Broadway theater architecture, applies it here, but extends his reach to a range of other commercial buildings, with a special focus on C&H's hotels--too few of which survive. The credentials of the writers have produced text that is both authoritative and accessible. Morrison and fellow essayist Kate Lemos (who ably handles the extensive section on C&H libraries)are architectural historians, while Warren and Mark Alan Hewitt are practicing architects. Individually and collectively, they provide descriptive detail and historical context in clear, crisp prose. The set features hundreds of exquisitely reproduced photographs and the volumes are housed in a debossed box with inset plates both front and back. A worthy tribute to the architects it commemorates and to the age in which they practiced.

If I could award this book ten stars I would, it's that good. Acanthus Press puts out gorgeous, well researched books and this could be their best publishing to date. Carrere and Hastings excelled in the grand Beaux Art style and it is so refreshing that so much of their work has survived. This is an exhaustive, scholarly piece of art and the author, Kate Lemos should be proud of this work. I was aware of much of the architecture of this Carrere and Hastings, but was surprised at the breath of their work. The images in this book are fantastic and the text is highly informative. If you have any interest in Carrere and Hastings or Guilded Age architecture, or just frankly appreciates gorgeous books, then you will love this book. In a word, spectacular.

Charles W. Williams is, in many ways, the "forgotten" member of the Inklings, a literary group that more famously included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien, among others. His most well-known works are the seven "Theological Thrillers", i.e, "All Hallows Eve", "The Place of the Lion", "Shadows of Ecstasy", "The Greater Trumps", "War in Heaven", "Descent into Hell", and "Many Dimensions". There are few, if any, novels like them in modern English literature, and they truly are "thrilling" - frightening (Stephen King is a piker by comparison), uplifting, amazing, and simply glorious. Williams' literary output was considerably larger, and included poetry, literary criticism, and especially philosophy and theology. This volume is a dense but in the end highly satisfying taste of his theology and spirituality, which is rich and unique, to say the least, and includes a discussion of his unique constructions of "Co-inherence" and "Substitution". While a knowledge of his seven novels is useful, a new reader will find this collection to be a fascinating reflection of a towering thinker who has been much overlooked, but hopefully will find a new audience in our time. Highly recommended. One can only hope that more of his works will soon be back in print.

I love all Shakespeare's works in all his genres, but this play is my favourite one of the Comedies. I have read it numerous times, but I have also seen it played on the stage, and it was unbelievably funny there. This play is actually one of Shakespeare's earliest. The play is a story about doubles, and the confusion that arises from this. Shakespeare protagaonists are a pair of twins, and to complicate things further each twin has an identical twin for a servant. Shakespeare's humour is bawdy as it was expected to be during the Elizabethan age. Some people think this particular play displays farcical humour because the humour is so broad, but I truly enjoyed reading it and seeing it. I think the genius of this particular play is in the deftness of the plot and the fast-paced perfection and timing of its action. I laughed out loud many times during this wonderful play.

As someone who is reading Shakespeare for the second time at the age of 40 and who considers himself a careful reader, I am always surprised to find the Oxford editors bring new ways of looking at the plays. In this introduction, Whitworth does a commendable job of explaining the importance of The Comedy of Errors which is usually dismissed as light weight farce, by explaining the history of critiism of the play and it social relevance.
Presented as a Christmas entertainment for the queen, The Comedy cleverly combines plots from two Plautus plays as well as introducing plot elements of his own.
I-- a mere mortal-- have no ability to criticize Shakespeares truly immortal genious. As the best writer ever, all I can do is enjoy the work. The scholarly intro allows you to heighten the pleasure seeing thing that might not be seen at surface level.
An additional benefit of the Oxford Shakespeare is that it is annotated with just enough notes-- on the same page as the text.
If you read Shakespeare for enjoyment or for a class, Oxford is the best.

This book is one of a kind, where Chuck gets below the surface to see major paradigm shifts in the style of mission. He did this long before the term postmodernism came into vogue, predicting what we should do structurally to enable a whole new generation of missions. His model has been foundational for the Servants, Innerchange, Word Made Flesh, Urban Trek and other incarnational missions. Essential reading for budding missionaries and missions executives.

Do not be discouraged by the fact that this work is the author's first book. It is an excellent work with the content being ratified by some of the world's leading experts.
Aimed at any ordinary member of the public who is concerned about the need for protecting and conserving Coral Reefs, William Gray hits his mark spot on. The book is skilfully divided into 6 main chapters which allow the author to carefully build on what has been written so far as he brings the level of knowledge of the reader slowly forward.
Beautifully illustrated throughout with outstanding photographs and excellent graphics, I learned a lot from this book. It is the one book every scuba diver and concerned person should read on this topic.

Being forced out of Arkansas to California to complete my education after Governor Faubus closed the schools, didn't dampen my view of the South.
I plan to buy all of the new subjects that have just been published by these publishers.

At least a half-dozen times in the book "Foundations of Mac OS X Leopard Security" the authors state that there is a misconception that the Macintosh computer is immune from security problems. That allegation may explain why there are very few books published (and nearly none in recent years) about security for the Mac. This book is meant to change all that. The authors acknowledge that the Mac OS Xsoftware has had little of the security problem experience of Windows (and other operating systems, to a lesser extent) but they spend 488 pages detailing exactly where and how the Macintosh platform is (or may be?) vulnerable.
Many of the security issues raised in the book are theoretical or deal with added elements of the Mac software install that contain non-Apple components -- Apache Web server and Perl and PHP scripting packages, for example. Many of the items of concern deal with generic problem areas of computer usage in general, both software and hardware, which affect the Mac as well as any other computers and networks. While the perspective of the book is on the Mac, much of the security review will apply to any type of computer or network.
Messieurs Edge, Barker, and Smith are seasoned Mac and security professionals who point out in a very systematic and comprehensive way the potential problems of running the Mac both in single use and networked environments. The focus is primarily on Mac OS X Leopard and the other software which comes with any new Mac computer, although there is some discussion of earlier OS X versions and earlier generations of Apple applications like Airport.
The book has five main parts covering general security matters, essential security fundamentals, networking, sharing, and workplace security issues. There are four very short appendices of modest value.
The initial first three chapters deal with general security and security fundamentals is basic stuff discussing how technical computer security issues are entwined with practical realities of using computers in a business or home, and that compromises between security and practicality generally must be made. There is discussion of types of security attacks, how the Windows booting programs, Parallels and Boot Camp, implicate Windows security issues on the Mac, and how the UNIX underpinnings of the Mac OS X allow for more sophisticated techniques and tools in securing the Mac computer and networks. Chapter 1 is a useful "quick start" guide of items which can be addressed readily by nearly any level of user to safeguard the Mac from many security concerns. Apple has provided a lot of built-in security features and services which can be adjusted by individual users to his or her own needs, like FileVault, Secure Trash, Keychain, permissions, and others. Higher-level users and maybe experienced security professionals not used to the Mac may be bored with the first part of the book.
Part two deals with protecting the Mac from malware and exploitable services in the OS and major applications like the Safari browser and Mail applications. It explains how malware can affect the Mac through script viruses, social engineering techniques, and other exploits. The book lists a number of available software tools which can help solve some of the potential problems. The section on reviewing and configuring monitoring processes and logs is especially interesting.
Securing networks, using and configuring firewalls, and wireless networking make up the bulk of part three. The content in chapters 7 through 9 is quite technical covering types of networks; routers, hubs and switches;proxy, DMZ, and other servers and hardware setups, advanced firewall configuration using both GUI and command line interfaces; filtering; traffic throttling; and more. The sections describing testing of firewalls and hacking wireless networks using tools like Kismac and iStumbler are especially useful.
Chapter 11, in part four, dealing with website security when utilizing the built-in Apple web services, includes a checklist of at least a dozen items to be dealt with in locking down a site. Security for remote conductivity is addressed also, with particular emphasis given to VPN, secure shell, and the use of network administration tools like Timbuktu and DAVE. Attention is given to both the standard MacOS X installation as well as to OS X Server. The most complex discussions involve using Open Directory in a security plan. My favorite sections were in chapters 14 on network scanning, monitoring, and intrusion prevention tools. The book describes how to understand your own machine/network security status by learning how to attack other networks. And how to use techniques like white/black box testing, fingerprinting, enumeration, port and TCP/UDP scans, ping sweeps, and more.
The book describes how intrusion detection is accomplished. Guidance is provided on software tools like Tripwire, snort, Checkmate, and others. The last chapter concerns forensics and how to handle attempted or successful intrusions to both understand security weaknesses and to preserve evidence for civil or criminal proceedings, CSI-like.
Nearly all of the presentations cover two levels of interactivity using either GUI-based tools or the command line. Except for a handful of sections, the presentations are useful even for higher-end users, including those dealing with medium to large networks.
The writing is workmanlike and without style or wit, but carefully organized and expressed. There are plenty of (grayscale) screenshots of relevant software application configurations, and sidebar Notes and Tips on many topics. Anyone who has a serious interest in Mac OS X security will benefit from this book as its main virtue is its systematic and comprehensive approach to the issues. It is designed to inform users of all levels how and why to think about OS X security. Geeks who want or need to know Mac OS X security will get a nicely organized book sufficiently filled with useful content. This is not a book intended to raise all security issues or to provide all the answers. It does answer many problems, and will point nearly all users in the right direction for their specific needs.

Richly researched and clearly written, this book is a find! Has just the right amount of detail to provide the reader with the degrees of difficulty in conducting nuclear terrorism but does not overwhelm.
The "four faces" of nuclear terrorism described in the book are (1) theft of a nuclear weapon, (2) construction of a nuclear weapon (3) damage to a nuclear reactor or facility, and (4) construction of a radiological dispersal device. The authors succintly analyze each of these scenarios and clearly present the challenges involved by terrorists attempting each task. Devoid of hype, absent political rhetoric, the book is superb at providing the general reader with an appreciation for the actual risks America faces from this area. Particularly recommended for those engaged in the profession of CBRN defense.
Apparently out of print which is a shame, try to get your hands on a copy and read it.

This book possesses two advantages over other accounts: 1) as a product of the Center for Nonproliferation Studies of the Monterey Institute, which has the leading archive of information on the subject, it offers rich, precisely documented detail; and 2) besides discussing how terrorists might acquire an existing nuclear weapon or fashion their own (Faces #1 and 2), it offers in-depth treatments of terrorist threats to nuclear plants (#3) and the use of radiological weapons (#4). A more comprehensive approach than one focussed just on the bomb, this leads to superior analysis and recommendations regarding ranking of priority issues and solutions. I found of special value the authors' many imaginative proposals, e.g., encourage Japan to build a strategic reserve of low-enriched uranium from Russia rather than to proceed with its plutonium separation plant. The authors' discussion of the gaping holes in the approaches of the U.S. Government and other governments should cause us to treat with skepticism our leaders' avowals of how seriously they take these threats.
If you are looking for a reliable, comprehensive, understandable, and thoughtful guide to nuclear terrorism, I recommend this book.

This actually is NOT the reprint edition (the previous reviewer's remarks to the contrary). ISBN 0-691-10185-X (this edition) is the original Princeton University Press edition (paperback) that contains the "Appendix: Full Text of Three Quoted Poems" (Moore, Larkin, Berryman). The Northwestern reprint that the previous reviewer is referring to is a different edition (ISBN 0-8101-1316-3). This Princeton edition is out of print and hard to obtain, but well worth it.

I read this book in graduate school in its original edition. I don't know that I've ever read a better treatment of the subject. Hartman makes an excellent case for free verse as a rigorous form, and his discussion of prosody should be required reading for all teachers of 20th century poetry and any poet who wants to work in this form.
