This little book is a treasure. I enjoyed it so much I have shared stories from it many times. I would like my grandson to read it when he's old enough. I regret to say though, I don't think he will get "it". Appreciation for the world of nature and animals in their natural habitat seems to be a thing of the past, as is taking the time to really observe and learn.
And so...I'm keeping this little gem in my library and perhaps in a few generations someone will pick up great-great grandmother's book and find a world so foreign and beautiful they will be touched.

Dunmore's selections are indeed perfect for intermediate and advanced students. Most excerpts are substantial, so I wouldn't recommend it to relative novices, but there are some shorter selections. Notes are sufficient and to the point, ditto for the vocabulary, again perfect for advanced students. The literary quality is excellent throughout, Ovid at his best. Big bang for the buck.

Although this book is out-of-print, taking the trouble to find it will be worth it. Charles Lamb gives concise summaries of the plots of three Shakespearean plays: Romeo & Juliet, The Tempest, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. There are a few big words, so it is best to read this book along with children, but the stories are short and exciting enough to hold attention. In addition, the illustrations by Judy Mastrangelo are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Shakespeare himself would have been proud.

This was arguably the greatest book that I have ever read on any topic. Not only was it a great account of General Willie T.'s life, but it also gave great insight into the real meaning of life. If anyone is looking for an answer to anything, then this is the book for you.

Dubin's Rapid Interpretation of EKG's is a good start, but you'll need something more than that. This book will fill in the gaps. Excellent.

From Book Jacket:
Donald Davidson (1893-1968) was a poet, historian and essayist whose work is still included in standard anthologies of American literature. One of the Nashville "fugitive poets," he also contributed to I'll Take My Stand and wrote a history of the Tennessee River which is still considered a classic. He was also a noted scholar of American folk songs and Singin' Billy grows out of this preoccupation. His book and lyrics provide an authenticity to the work which is unsurpassed in literature utilizing folk themes; and his words provide the perfect complement for Charles Bryan's brilliant and melodic score.
This musical was first produced in 1952 at Vanderbilt University. It has as its hero, William Walker of South Carolina, an influential figure in the musical culture of the antebellum south. His song-book, Southern Harmony (1955), was one of the great popularizing agents of the "shape note" or "Fa-Sol-La" type of part-song, long used in the singing schools and today known as "white spirituals." Walker was affectionately known to thousands as Singin' Billy. A few of the Southern Harmony spirituals are presented in the opera, either in approximately their original, somewhat archaic form or in forms adapted to the musical-dramatic context.

If you haven't read this memoir yet you must do so NOW. It is a deeply interesting and charming book. It is impossible to guess how soon Henry James ceased to have the mind and emotions of a child. It is impossible to know if these anecdotes represent what the young Henry really felt or rather what the old Henry "remembered". But, no matter. The book gives us a different, a more tender, Henry James than the sharp tongued narrator of so many wonderful novels.
You'll never eat peaches or waffles again without thinking of Henry James. You'll never see Thackeray's name again without wishing you could call for "Buttons!" and have the dark-eyed boy who became the Master appear on your threshold.

Is there some classification higher than 10? If so, this books deserves it. Pages and pages of thigh-slapping nutty stuff about how Americans love to invent their own fun. Should be on every bookshelf in the English-speaking part of the world.

At this point Rogers finds himself very much in demand. Not only is he wanted for questioning by the police and the FBI, he is pursued by a gang of violent criminals.
The Sailcloth Shroud is a fast paced, well crafted mystery that unfolds very smoothly. Author Charles Williams skillfully tells this interesting tale using Rogers himself as first person narrator. One can't help but be impressed by the seamless incorporation of flashback scenes as a device to aid in the storytelling.
An engaging satisfying read. Recommended for all fans of mystery novels.
