Wonderfully refreshing, piquant collection of short stories
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-10-02
If nothing else, the title of this collection of short stories is compelling. The first tale draws you in, and Merrill never lets up. His whimsical perspective on the combination of newly-found wealth, pride and responsibility among post-war Americans encountering the old world is a true gem. Whether Merrill is describing high-class, philosophical con artists, the lowly typewriter repairman in American-occupied Italy during WWII, or the overstuffed, undercultured "typical American tourists" on a gastronomic rampage through post-war France, you cannot help but laugh and marvel at his wit. Great reading!

Harvest of Barren Regrets

Review Date: 2000-08-09
In his poignant biography of the man whom many believe to be George Armstrong Custer's "Brutus", Mills paints a stirring portrait of an enigma of the Indian Wars, Frederick W. Benteen. If you're a follower of Custeriana or a whimsical student of Custer's Last Stand, you'll find this to be a fascinating character portrayal of a man maybe not so different from you and me. Benteen, a renowned cavalryman and survivor of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, rose to the rank of brevet colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War before joining the Seventh Cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas in 1867. His story is one of life on America's frontier, a tapestry of the hardship and brotherhood common to the campaigning cavalryman on the Great Plains. "Harvest of Barren Regrets" is an epic tale of a forgotten warrior, one of the last of a lost breed of American frontiersmen, and a book well worth the time and investment.

Dickens's best Christmas novel
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-09
Sadly, this Christmas novella is overshadowed (as are the other four) by A Christmas Carol -- which is, no question, a classic.

But I found this book a worthy equal, if not a bit better than Carol, in that the characters are a little more fleshed out, the movement of the story has darker and therefore more dramatic flourishes - while at the same time the comic characters are more complete and take a more central place in the plot. And the `message' is a bit less obvious.

The ghost of the title is far more sinister than Marley and Christmas Future combined!

A history of HEROES, quietly forgotten.

Professor Adelman presents the history of the Haymarket Affairwith a broad perspective of surrounding related events, the manypeople involved, historically significant Chicago locations, then and now (1976 - published), and the social changes that we enjoy today brought about by these great people. A fascinating group of tours is included that allows you to glimpse some of the times. I have lived in Chicago most of my life, and even attended St. Michael's High School. I have always lived in these neighborhoods where these events and people lived. But, before this book my knowledge of these events, studied and known throughout the world, was superficial and inaccurate, at best. Because I grew up here in Chicago and was educated here, I find this appalling. This should be required reading for all students in the Chicago area, since these events and people contributed, and are respected around the world, for this Chicago history. If you are new to labor history or are interested in Chicago history, then, this is a very good read.

The Healing Works of Jesus is one of the most complete and easy-to-use reference guides I have seen concerning healings in the gospels. William Higgins has written a great resource book for every student of the Word that desires to grow in the knowledge of healing and miracles performed by Jesus. Practical charts that display the methods and order in which Jesus healed will save you countless hours of research, and studying this book will bring you into a deeper revelation of healing and a clearer understanding of how and when Jesus ministered healing.

The Healing Works of Jesus is an organized, practical, and faith-inspiring guide to the healing power of God. It is textbook quality and should be used in Bible college curricula around the world. I strongly recommend this book for anyone dealing with personal health issues or desiring to minister healing to others.

"Jesus gave a great many other signs in the presence of his disciples which are not recorded in this book. But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that in that faith you may have life through his name. John 20:30-31

His Initial Majesty
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-03
Henry VII, that relatively unknown king who is dwarfed in popular history by his descendents, through the nature of his court invented the concept of "majesty". This relatively compact volume may not be as rich in historical detail as the tomes written latterly, but it fully captures the essence of this man, the first Tudor king. Written in 1937, this work brings to my mind and was probably influenced by the historical biographical work of Lytton Strachey. From exiled obscurity to success on the battlefield to building England's place in Europe, Henry is a contained customer.

Statecraft was his metier, as he formed key alliances through the marriages of his children, playing a close hand on the European stage. His interesting relationship with the Spanish ambassador De Puebla is well displayed and examined, as well as the problematical issue of Catherine of Aragon.

This work does perhaps posit that the reader has something of a grasp of early Tudor history, but that should not put anyone off. It is a very well done character painting of a complex and infinitely interesting and often overlooked king.

Children need heroes
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-07
Some quotations from Adam Starchild's wonderful afterword to this book are appropriate:

"Children today are starved for the image of real heroes. Celebrities are not the same thing as heroes. Heroes existed way before celebrities ever did, even though celebrities now outshine heroes in children's consciousness." "Worshiping celebrities leaves children with a distinctly empty feeling -- it doesn't teach that they'll have to make sacrifices if they want to achieve anything worthwhile. No- talents become celebrities all the time. The result is that people don't seem to care about achievement or talent -- fame is the only objective."

"... Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of traits that instruct and inspire people. A hero does something worth talking about, but a hero goes beyond mere fame or celebrity. The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. If they serve only their own fame, they may be celebrities but not heroes. Heroes are catalysts for change. They create new possibilities. They have a vision, and the skill and charm to implement their vision."

"Heroes may also be fictional. Children may identify with a character because of the values projected. People tend to grow to be like the people that they admire, but if a child never has any heroes what images will he copy? Adults need heroes too, but the need is even more urgent for children because they don't know how to think abstractly. But they can imagine what their hero would do in the circumstances, and it gives them a useful reference point to build abstract thinking skills."
