In reading the section of Dr. Thigpen's book on scrupulosity, I felt confirmed in what God was already speaking to my heart on this subject matter. Paul Thigpen's writings clearly illustrate that he has spent time near the heart of Jesus.

A little book, full of wisdom

As one who often needs to "make peace" with something or another, I found this book a marvelous compilation of advice--the excerpts from the saints' writings highlight the need to make peace, and suggest how to go about it. Dr. Thigpen has pulled together, in one handy reference, a treasure-trove of wisdom. Highly recommended for anyone struggling with internal obstacles that cause separation from God.

"If I have seen further,it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants" --Sir Isaac Newton

An excellent book of quotations on all aspects of Science. One would expect such a book to be quotations only by Scientists. However; that is not the case, since Science affects everyone's lives ,quite rightly the author includes quotations from great people and thinkers, throughout the ages, who also made quotations about Science and Scientists. Many of the quotations involve deep philosophical thought about Science in general,Life in general;as well as the meaning of Life, and the Origin of Life; and relationship between Man and a Supreme Being.
The wide range of the people who made quotations about Science soon becomes obvious as you go through the book.
Just try to imagine ,what some of these famous people, might have to say about Science. In many cases, you will draw a blank;but then read their quotation---you will be amazed.
People such as;Woody Allen,Mark Twain,George Bernard Shaw,George Santayana,Leonardo da Vinci,Johann Wolfgang von Geothe,General Omar Bradley,Bertrand Russell,Leo Tolstoy,Oscar Wilde,Carl Jung,Winston Churchill,Mao Tse-Tung,SaintThomas Aquinas,Emily Dickinson,John F Kennedy,Abraham Lincoln,Plato,Jonathan Swift; as well as those whose names immediately come to mind in Sciense,such as; Albert Einstein,Stephen Hawking,Galileo,Charles Darwin,Euclid,Carl Sagan,Charles Steinmetz,Max Planck,Wernher von Braun,Edward Teller,and many more.This is just an idea of the over 300 people who have made the quotations in this book.
The book is well organized with the quotations presented in 14 categories. This makes it very interesting to read what these great people had to say on a particular subject ;such as "What Science Is...and Is Not" ,"What Can We Know, and What Must Remain a Mystery." or "Humankind's Place in the Universe".
Or,if you just want to know what any particular person had to say; simply turn to the "Index of Authors" and you will find their quotations listed by page.
Just for fun,who do you think said?

"Science is our favorite modern superstition"

"The National Academy of Sciences would be unable to give a unanimous
decision if asked whether the sun would rise tomorrow." (Little wonder there are such diverse opinions on Global Warming)

Or,how about this one on page 220;

"If You Build Your House on a Crack in the Earth,It's Your Own Fault.

I hope this gives you a flavor of the over 1,000 expressions of the spirit of Science that awaits you in this magnificent collection of quotations.

This book is a necessity for any scienctist or philosopher. It is full of some of the best scientific quotes and quips I have ever read, spanning the centuries of scientific conjecture- and they are logically categorized for quick reference. This book contains quotes relating to every area or aspect of science, and is a source of wisdom and inspiration. Makes a great gift too!

Brief, pleasant and profound

As much as the brilliant perspectives and profound insights of their works astound me, nothing scribed by the likes of Hegel, Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, etc. is as immediately and universally serviceable as the charming truisms in this slim book. Colored by a uniquely Scottish wit and thrift of prose, these maxims are easy to remember, worth repeating and worthy of adherence. And they make for compulsive reading!

Proverbs forged in the hearts of the Scots

Review Date: 2000-11-20
Scottish Proverbs contains distillations of the Scottish experience in the form of proverbs that have evolved from that experience. Collected by Julie Jensen McDonald beginning with research for her novel The Heather and the Rose, these bits of folk wisdom are reproduced in hand calligraphy adapted to the styles of the seventh-century Insular Half-Unicals and tenth-century Anglo-Saxon Miniscule, both from the manuscript The Lindisfarne Gospels. Printed single-sided, each page is a work of art worthy of framing. Illustrations include the Scottish Lion, a celtic cross from Iona, a fictional clan badge from the family of Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, and on the cover, a Luckenbooth pin designed to win the heart of Mary Queen of Scots. The cover plaid is Black Stewart.

Julie Jensen McDonald, related by marriage to the great Clan Donald, is the author of more than a dozen published books, including novels, a biography and a volume of regional history. Esther Feske, calligrapher and graphic designer from ALbuquerque, New Mexico, relates to the family of Oglevie and was also the designer for Julie McDonald's prize-winning Scandinavian Proverbs.

This collection-sometimes rueful, other times philosophical, occasionally humorous and always practical- gives an insight to the people and their experience. Throughout this book are the words of Robert Burns, the immortal poet of Ayr, who wrote many a line that sounds like, and has become a proverb. His down-to-earth insights have been passed from generation to generation with the same enduring verity as the proverbs forged in the hearts of the Scots.

The author is brilliant and I have read all of her books, they are a valuable asset to my meager library and they lighten my life. I'm learning from this book and my sincere wish is that the author will become the center of my life. The next one is dedicated to me and I hope I can live up to it. She is not only brilliant but is also very funny and it has been a pleasure to know her.

Everyone loves it.

This is a great book for anyone who enjoys movies. It's light and fun and really does harvest some awesome dialogue from some awesome movies (but some I've never heard of). I also like how it's organized with categories like rants, insults, romance and my favorite "less than romantic."

I remember that line.

What a great collection. Many of these lines are standards in conversation among myself and my sons, but Jim brings back long lost memories of films that I had not seen in years. My wife and I have rented a number of movies based on this book.

This is a little gift book of inspirational quotes and sweet little drawings. It gives the quotes, the authors and their birth & death years, and a short phrase describing each author. For example, "'It's a very short trip. While alive, live!' Malcolm Forbes (1919-1990), American publisher." I have a box of greeting cards that are blank inside, and I like to write in a quote that fits with a card for a more personal thank you or birthday card, for example. These quotes are inspiring and upbeat and do just the trick.

This little book is "a true gift" to anyone seeking peace.

Review Date: 2006-12-27
We opened a small Christmas package (this book) that came from a friend. Lo, our view about our own very own lives, as in "right now," were almost instantly and excitingly redeemed, simply by contemplating the simple truths found when merely reading the first two chapters! Call it good-timing if you must, but this little book easily brought us to consider how to let "time" serve us, NOW, as it truly is ... and always has been, well before this ole world "humanized" the concept of time with hundreds of false beliefs that lead us all to experience useless longings. Adopting the "now" is all that is available to find inner peace, if only we will see it. It's that simple. This book is stimulating, intellectual reading for anyone seeking inner peace by merely readily embracing most all of the wisdoms that are given in this book, simply for the taking!

A Wonderful Resource and Gift

"A morning-glory by my window satisfies me more than the metaphysics of books," the poet Walt Whitman.--
Klein's book is filled with inspirations and reminders of how to be present and appreciate the life we have. It is organized into chapters which include "Be Present," "Focus on What's Important," "Keep It Simple," and "Savor Silence." Among the hundreds of people and sources quoted are Jack Kornfield, William James, Lao-Tzu, Salvador Dali, the Bible, the Bhagavad-Gita, Oprah Winfrey, Socrates, Donald Trump, Leonardo Da Vinci, Yogi Berra, Kahil Gilbran. and Tina Turner. It is a wonderful gift for yourself and others.

Celebrates cultures around the world!

Review Date: 1999-09-04
As the number of indiginous societies declines and technology replaces older ways of life, this book celebrates the principles shared by cultures around the world. Editor Shirley Jones has culled bits of wisdom from 240 ethnic groups on every continent, ranging from the restorative power of one's heritage - to making community. The book has a foreword by Brooke Medicine Eagle. - Publishers Weekly Magazine

This is a thought-provoking collection, serious yet fun.

Review Date: 1999-09-03
This collection of thoughts from around the world emphasizes that wisdom is not limited to technologically advanced society but, in fact, is often found most profoundly in the simplest of cultures. The editor has assembled words of many people in a manner that shows clearly how related all peoples are, how our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions are not limited by the physical and cultural barriers we normally perceive, and how humor, grace, and insight light up lives in all cultures.
