A typical WWII general

General Patrick was one of the very few General officers killed in battle during WWII. This study shows how the general was a the typical product of the inter-war Army educational system. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested on how the army turned out officers ready to command in a global war.

Commanding General 6th Inf Division, DOW Luzon 1945.

Review Date: 1997-12-20
General Patrick was by all accounts a commander who combined combat efficiency with a kind and considerate nature, and the fact of his death at the head of his division speaks for itself. (There were only two other American division commanders killed in action in World War II; Rose of the 3rd Armored, and Wharton of the 28th Infantry Divisions).
The main interest of this work however is the careful delineation of the training of officers in the period between the World Wars, when the emaciated American Army had to substitute staff schools and war colleges for actual command of large formations. General Patrick was a product of this training and his story demonstrates how well the system served the American people.

Theodore was not like other women. She had no time for all the niceties that many take for granted. Afterall, she was stuck at home caring for her bitter, and senile Mother. On the eve of the Mother's death, Theodore begins an odyssey to discover the meaning of life and existence itself. A haunting tale that grips the reader with all the intensity and anguish that a book can muster. A quality book suitable for the thinking reader

An Excellent Book of Spells
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-26
Eldritch Sorcery is exactly what it says it is: a giant book of spells.

This book contains hundreds of new spells for all of the core d20 spell casting classes, plus Assassins and Blackguards. I was impressed with the number and variety of spells available. There's a heavy emphasis on Evocation, Necromancy and Transmutation, but all of the schools are well represented. Illusion is the only school that seems to have gotten the short end of the stick.

The book is well laid out and very text dense. Unlike most d20 sourcebooks, Eldritch Sorcery contains no new Prestige Classes and only a handful of new Feats. This is a huge plus for me.

Will Peggy Cass and Dodie Goodman Come On Down?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-05
having skewered the entertainment industry in "Little Me" Patrick Dennis now turns his barbecue writing to the next most logical topic, politics. The intimate story of a twit and her nymphomaniacal sister (thoughtfully portrayed in Cris Alexander's droll photographs by Mesdames Cass and Goodman), is the unpredictable story of an idiot who believes everything she's told and accepts it at more than face value. Rising from Southern Slums to an appropriate ending, this daughter of the old South, and a moonshiner attempting to go legit by bottling the jack as a "tonic", rises above it all seeing only the good while neglecting the good-for-nothing that is her heritage.

As ever, it's the accuity of Patrick Dennis' view of social mores and customs that is truly the backdrop for this lush (?) tale of greed, money, politics-bought and sold, money, alcohol, mendacity and money. But we can overlook the social tapestry, one must as you'll be laughing too hard to sense the sneering look at post civil war Southernisms.
Martha Dinwiddie Butterfield is a stoop and a stooge but she's been told that she's a lady and that's the role she elects to grace with her ill-educated presence. Prententious without knowing she is, she wanders through a book that open allows you to stop laughing if you put it down.

The superimposition of "Our Heroine" and her cronies on real backgrounds is a Cris Alexander triumph. It's odd, in a book review, to mention costumes but they also deserve a thumbs up. Finding the turn-of-the century wardrobe could not have been easy, even in the early '60's.

Even those well versed in American Political History who know that none of this hogwash is true may pause. That's the brilliance of verisimilitude as practiced by Patrick Dennis. The trappings are real, it's the characters who aren't.

If you're not having a good time with Martha, Patrick, Cris and Co. see a doctor. You have serious problems if it's not discovered your dead.

This book is fantastic, and so well written. The fun thing is how there is a story within the story that you get by reading between the lines.

The best analysis of the information age I have ever read. White ties a variety of sources into an exposition that is innovative and convincing. The author is bright, resourceful, thoughtful--a persuasive writer. A stimulating guide to the coming information boom.

A great specialized book for the new Vampire
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-16
This book is an ideal resource for storytellers and players looking to play a "road game" of Requiem. It's got a lot of detail on why specific covenants would send their members on the road, the roles that various clans play in road coteries, specifics on concerns that vampires would face on the road, devotions, Cruac rituals, Theban sorcery, a sample of road antagonists or allies (including the oft-mentioned Unholy!) and a sample setting, Route 666.

All in all, a great book, though honestly a bit heavily priced for such a thin book.

Fabulous biography about a not very likeable person
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-21
I found the biog hard to put down, unlike White's fiction which I find easy to put down! Marr has written a scholarly yet entertaining biography, and you really feel you come to know something about an Australian icon - our only Nobel laureate in literature.

In everything i have read (including White's own portrait of himself, Flaws In The Glass) he comes across as a horrible man - a misogynist, but with some political principles with which I might agree.

Nevertheless, that is not the point of literature, or art, to be loved by one and all. White's voice certainly added immensely to the cultural life of this country, and it is worth getting to know something about his life and works. Marr's book is an excellent place to start.

A straightforward and extensive bibliography
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-13
The expert collaboration of Brian Hubber and Vivian Smith, Patrick White: A Bibliography is a straightforward and extensive bibliography of the writings of Patrick White (1912-1990), one of Australia's greatest writers, recipient of the 1973 Nobel Prize for Literature, whose work has been translated into thirty-one languages. Bibliography entries include descriptions of all the editions and translations of White's works, listings of reviews of first and other significant editions, and accounts of the composition and reception of each work, as well as such mundane facts as book physical description, page count, dimensions, print run, etc. A superb, high-quality text that spares no detail, especially recommended for reference libraries and individual enthusiasts who need to know detailed information about Patrick White's works.
