Commanding General 6th Inf Division, DOW Luzon 1945.Review Date: 1997-12-20
The main interest of this work however is the careful delineation of the training of officers in the period between the World Wars, when the emaciated American Army had to substitute staff schools and war colleges for actual command of large formations. General Patrick was a product of this training and his story demonstrates how well the system served the American people.

An Excellent Book of SpellsReview Date: 2006-03-26
This book contains hundreds of new spells for all of the core d20 spell casting classes, plus Assassins and Blackguards. I was impressed with the number and variety of spells available. There's a heavy emphasis on Evocation, Necromancy and Transmutation, but all of the schools are well represented. Illusion is the only school that seems to have gotten the short end of the stick.
The book is well laid out and very text dense. Unlike most d20 sourcebooks, Eldritch Sorcery contains no new Prestige Classes and only a handful of new Feats. This is a huge plus for me.

Will Peggy Cass and Dodie Goodman Come On Down?Review Date: 2006-10-05
As ever, it's the accuity of Patrick Dennis' view of social mores and customs that is truly the backdrop for this lush (?) tale of greed, money, politics-bought and sold, money, alcohol, mendacity and money. But we can overlook the social tapestry, one must as you'll be laughing too hard to sense the sneering look at post civil war Southernisms.
Martha Dinwiddie Butterfield is a stoop and a stooge but she's been told that she's a lady and that's the role she elects to grace with her ill-educated presence. Prententious without knowing she is, she wanders through a book that open allows you to stop laughing if you put it down.
The superimposition of "Our Heroine" and her cronies on real backgrounds is a Cris Alexander triumph. It's odd, in a book review, to mention costumes but they also deserve a thumbs up. Finding the turn-of-the century wardrobe could not have been easy, even in the early '60's.
Even those well versed in American Political History who know that none of this hogwash is true may pause. That's the brilliance of verisimilitude as practiced by Patrick Dennis. The trappings are real, it's the characters who aren't.
If you're not having a good time with Martha, Patrick, Cris and Co. see a doctor. You have serious problems if it's not discovered your dead.

This is a fantastic book!Review Date: 2007-02-13

Fabulous biography about a not very likeable personReview Date: 2000-03-21
In everything i have read (including White's own portrait of himself, Flaws In The Glass) he comes across as a horrible man - a misogynist, but with some political principles with which I might agree.
Nevertheless, that is not the point of literature, or art, to be loved by one and all. White's voice certainly added immensely to the cultural life of this country, and it is worth getting to know something about his life and works. Marr's book is an excellent place to start.
