Boxed set allows reader to find out "all about the Walkers"Review Date: 2003-04-14
Ms. Wells has the ability to capture a particular era and region of the country (the South) and make her characters come alive.
The Ya-Yas are all about friendship, loyalty and some much darker and less admirable human traits as well. Some of the situations recounted in these two VERY different books about the Walker family will have the reader squirming with discomfort. For Rebecca Wells is intent on telling the whole story: the bad, the sad, the shocking, as well about the successes, the joys and a lot of giggles at the funnier side of human nature.
When you have finished both volumes in this boxed set, you will have a really good idea of what makes a very complex set of family members (the Walkers) "tick". What keeps them together, what may tear them apart. The journey isn't going to be boring in Ms. Wells' talented hands.
The story(stories) prove that being a "southern belle" isn't nearly as easy as you might think.
I'm happy to have my own lovely boxed set, combining both volumes 'Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood' and 'Little Alters Everywhere', so I can revisit these fascinating people any time I want. My particular recommendation for the reader would be to read 'Divine Secrets' first and then flesh out the history of the clan with 'Little Alters'. But I have wondered many times why Ms. Wells published the smaller, episodic 'Little Alters' first. So those uninitiated into Ya-Ya-hood, may wish to read them in order of the published date. If you do, PLEASE let me know what you think about the experience. I'd be interested in your opinions.

A book I will buy without hesitationReview Date: 2007-10-09
My daughter (almost age 6) picked it up at the library along with other princess books and I enjoyed reading every page of this book. It has justice in it and a very happy ending: "People would often say what a handsome couple she and Egbert made, but they found their true joy reading good books to each other by the fire every evening, sharing a good laugh, and simply enjoying the pleasure of each other's company." THAT is a fairytale to emulate.
It was published in 2004, and I am greatly surprised not to see it plastered with awards. The illustrations are magnificent in and of themselves.

Great book...mid-teens and upReview Date: 2008-02-14
There are some sexual references in the book, but nothing graphic so reader discretion advised. There are some good life lessons and the characters seem real.

Not appropriate for its target audience (12 year olds); also too dull for anyone over the age of 12Review Date: 2007-11-16
First, the "cutesy-ness" of the girls' friendship is vomit-inducing! We're supposed to believe that four girls, from completely different backgrounds, remain best friends for fifteen years. Their mothers lost touch, they went to different schools, and one went to Portugal for a few months. (In my experience, when people often separate when they go to different schools.) Second, the cutsey power of the aerobics studio, where their pregnant mothers met sixteen years, was a bit much. Especially the fact that they kept breaking into the studio to have their ceremonies. Third, the content of their notes were often really lame.
The vocabulary is simple, the plot even simpler. The characters were all in desparate need of self-esteem. Carmen needs closure over her parent's divorce; she's still seven years old in that regard. Bridget is manic-depressive- "single minded to the point of recklessness". Tibby is the sterotypical "rebel girl". Lena has boundary and privacy issues. No one to admire here. Especially since the target audience is middle school and could use positive role models. :(
That said, I was appalled by some of the situations in this book:
1) Rule #3- a boy can't remove the Pants, but they can remove it in his presence
2) Breaking and entering into the aerobics studio. But, it's okay because the owner doesn't have a good security system
3) Bridget does a kamikaze with her mental illness. (Sadly, Brashares never mentions that Bridget is mentally ill.) She nearly gets herself in trouble with a 19 year old campus counselor. There's way too much talk about lust in her story!
4) Effie is 14 and makes out with lots of boys.
5) Accusations of rape
6) Nudity
Two stars because I wanted to see what happened to one of the younger girls. I skimmed through the very end of the book to find out what would happen to her. (I already knew, from the movie and other book reviews, but I wanted to see how it was handled in print.) Girls, get your parents' permission before you buy this book. Ladies, rent the movie.

I was introduced to Hacker's 5th ed. Rules for Writers in a college English course I took to brush up on my writing, and the instructor was always eager to express how great she thought the book was. At the time, I was unconvinced; however, as my appreciation for the nuances of the English language has increased, so has my appreciation for this book. Paper after paper, Rules has been an indispensable go-to for all of my writing concerns. It is both clear and concise in its explanations, and its various indexes and tables of contents (the purpose of having more than one is to list contents in various levels of detail depending on how specific your query is) make it possible to find exactly what you are looking for without much trouble.
I have recommended this book to friends, and I would recommend it to anyone else who seeks an extensive resource on writing mechanics.
