Among The Best Short Stories WrittenReview Date: 2005-06-28
The Calm Beauty of Katherine MansfieldReview Date: 2002-02-23
The beauty of Mansfield's writing lies in her poetic description of detail--her power of suggestion--and her courage. She was determined, both in her life and in her writing, to move against the current of the time. Her life was filled with problems; her health, her love life, and her writing all caused her measureless pain, but in spite of these she lived her life the way she chose to live it. And though her writings were often critized--not least by her notable rival, Virginia Woolf--she kept on in the face of difficulty, and is now recognized as a major transformer of the short story.
A few examples from this collection would be in order. In "At the Bay," Mansfield examines in great detail the experiences and emotions of each member of a large family in New Zealand. It is in this story that she displays perhaps to the fullest extent her ability to take seemingly unimportant details--gestures, looks, scattered thoughts--and from them build a fascinating portrayal of an individual's personality.
In "Psychology," she conducts a unique experiment. At first glance, not much happens in the story; but on further examination and multiple rereadings, the depth of conflict becomes evident, and then, Mansfield's understanding of the deepest nooks and crannies not only of the female but also of the male character.
"The Singing Lesson" progresses in a lighter vein; a spinster singing teacher receives a message from her fiance, breaking off their engagement; she begins her teaching miserable, heart-broken, and full of anger. Thirty minutes later, she receives another message in which he reassures her of his love. The story contains interesting use of imagery and simile, and pokes mild fun at the tragic mood swings of the young woman.
Mansfield's stories are not melodrama, but lyrics. They are short, poignant silhouttes drawn in quick and sometimes uneven brushstrokes, but always carrying the touch of genius.
Glimpses into the heart of what makes us humanReview Date: 2002-06-08
Fiction resembling lifeReview Date: 2000-05-21
I was fortunate enough to find a copy of Claire Tomalin's biography of Mansfield, and reading it gave me a better grasp of the context of the writing. If the stories sometimes seem remarkable or shocking for the time they were written in, Mansfield's life too readily provided a source to draw from. Her presence and personal failings, triumphs, and conflicts are felt throughout her work, and rereading the stories knowing about her life impressed this sense further. Her stories show what a writer can do when inspired, and suggest what a much greater writer she could have been with time, health, and happiness later in life.

This story reminds me a lot about the Street Fighter movie, but the twist Udon Comics takes on the story is terrific. Unlike the movie though, this comic incorporates EVERYONE in the Street Fighter universe (I think). And when combined with the art in the book which is absolutely phenomenal, you get a powerful combination which takes you back to the good old days when Street Fighter was king.
I wish I could have bought this book instead of all the comics, I would have saved myself $120.00. How can you say no when you'll save that much!

Successful Beginnings means better learningReview Date: 2002-02-11
If I were an administrator at a college, I would make sure that I got this book into the hands of every new faculty member, full-time or adjunct!
Beneficial for new and seasoned professors alikeReview Date: 2004-08-30
Now, for a few of the shortcomings. First, although there is likely some merit to the section, "The Chilly Classroom Climate" in chapter three, I think she gets a bit too politically correct here. For better or worse, students and professors alike will always have their biases which will affect the learning environment. Fortunately, as McGlynn herself notes, the suggestions she gives are more about enhancing the learning environment for all students than they are about accommodating "outsider" groups. Also, some of the "get to know you" exercises in chapter two strike me as a bit goofy for certain classes. For example, if you're teaching a calculus or astronomy class, does it really matter that you find out who in the class likes chocolate, is Jewish, has a twin, was born outside the U.S., etc? Probably not. However, if one is teaching a sociology or social psychology class, this might be helpful. In short, the generality of the book is at the same time one of its main strengths and one of its (rather excusable) weaknesses.
Successful Beginnings for College Teaching is by no means the last word on how to be a good teacher, but I doubt the author ever intended it to be. On the other hand, it offers useful suggestions on a variety of relevant topics. As such, it makes a good primer for young professors and a good refresher (or maybe even a renovator) for "old pros".
Not just for beginnings, but for the middle & end, too!Review Date: 2003-03-24
Instead, it is a useful book, written in a very personal, easy-going style. I felt as if I were having a conversation with her, rather than being lectured to. And, of course, that's the kind of classroom she's helping you create, if you follow her advice.

The Most Important Book I Have Read In Five YearsReview Date: 2004-07-18
The stories are, as a whole, optimistic but also bracingly honest about the obstacles these remarkable professionals have faced. It will inspire the young to believe that their goals are attainable. It will encourage those in mid-career to see that their progress, though uneven, is sustainable. And it will reassure those looking back at the end of their careers that their life's work has been significant if it has made it possible for even one or two others to achieve behind them. I read about one of these stories a day in the gym and frequently caught myself nodding in recognition at the experiences described.
The last profile in the book is of Deborah C. Wright, President and CEO of Carver Federal Savings Bank. The very last line in her profile, and thus the very last line in the book, is "[M]y prayers each morning are, 'God, just make me open to whatever the lesson is so I can get it and get on to the next one.'" AMEN!

Lovely little book.Review Date: 2000-10-30
The book is printed in color on good paper, and covers briefly every aspect of it - it's history, uses, types of decks, card meanings, and spreads.
The most attractive feature of this deck is that it features cards from many different decks, allowing the reader to get an impression of a wide variety of decks - something I havent seen in any other book, except in the expensive Encyclopedia of the Tarot which is *much* more expensive.
I love to show this book to people who are not familiar with the tarot just to give them a quick impression of it.
My only reservation is the price - I think it's a little too expensive if it's the only item in an order. I'd recommend ordering it along with something else to spread the shipping fees over a couple of items.
Looking for a deck? Want shortcut interpretations?Review Date: 2000-03-01
Quite good!Review Date: 2001-03-09
Another helpful item was the collection of "sample readings" at the end of the book. Lionnet applies each layout (i.e. Jungian, dual Options, Celtic Cross, etc...) to a specific Querent and then discusses each card in the spread in relation to the other cards.
A handy book for either the casual or the merely curious, this would make a great gift.

A must have for the Ayurvedic student!Review Date: 2003-01-05
Destined to become the definitive English-language textbook of ayurvedaReview Date: 2008-03-16
Dr. Vasant Lad is a world-renowned ayurvedic physician, born and educated in India, with more than forty years of clinical experience. He is one of the world's leading teachers and scholars of ayurveda, and served as professor of clinical medicine at the University of Pune College of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery as well as director of its affiliated hospital. Currently, he is president of and a senior faculty member at the Ayurvedic Institute, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Vasant Lad is the author of several professional texts and popular works on ayurveda and has written countless articles on the subject.
There have been many textbooks published for intending practitioners of ayurveda, but until now nearly all of these have been in Sanskrit or more frequently Hindi or one of India's regional languages. Lacking facility in one or more of these, the English speaking student was left with one of two relatively time-consuming and unsatisfactory alternatives: consulting English-language translations of ayurveda's classics (i.e., the Sushruta and Charaka compendiums and the Astanga Hridaya, inter alia, a prospect unwieldy to say the least given the host of ancient therapies no longer in existence in today's world and the often untranslatable proper names of conditions and medicines) or compiling and correlating information from popular works on the subject and online sources.
Dr. Vasant Lad's "Textbook of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" has resolved this daunting task for the professional student of ayurveda and provided in one well-organized, well-written and very clear English-language volume all salient aspects of the philosophical and scientific foundation that ayurveda stands upon: from the metaphysical underpinnings to the foundations of ayurvedic anatomy and physiology.
The book is arranged into ten sections covering, respectively the shad darshan (the metaphysical assumptions underlying ayurveda); the elements, gunas (qualities of matter) and the tridoshic theory; dosha subtypes and their locations and functions; agni (degistive processes) the sapta dhatus (seven tissue types); srotamsi (channels or meridians), ojas, tejas, and prana (subtle forms of the doshas), digestion and nutrition and swasthavritti (ayurvedic concepts of healthy lifestyles and regimens). The flow of instructional material in the book is superlatively well-organized, with the information provided in one section providing a knowledge base for the effective study of material provided in subsequent sections.
With the coming of ayurveda to the West, there has emerged a great need for a foundation-level textbook that not only caters to Western learning styles but that also forges a link between ayurveda's conceptions of anatomy and physiology and those of Western biomedicine. It contains the necessary foundation for the understanding of a paradigm of health and disease far removed from the Western one, going far beyond the level of detail and sophistication than that encountered in works published for the interested lay public.
The appearance of this valuable work by Dr. Lad is synchronous with the creation of more and higher quality, academically rigorous programs of instruction and training in ayurveda outside of the country of its birth. Dr. Lad has written what I believe will become the definitive textbook of ayurveda for English-speaking and reading students in the West, and is due an enormous debt of thanks by the ayurvedic profession and by the public in general. I heartily and unhesitatingly recommend this work as a necessity for all aspiring practitioners of ayurveda. It will also be of use to health professionals schooled in Western biomedical concepts who wish to achieve a degree of familiarity with ayurvedic concepts.

A "Complete Guide"Review Date: 2003-07-17
A useful text for western studentsReview Date: 2005-11-08
Dr.Vasant Lad is in the forefront of Vaidyas (ayurvedic practitioners) who have made ayurvedic education available to the West. He started teaching ayurveda in the USA in 1980, and has produced many prominent writers and educators on the subject. His previous books include the popular Ayurveda; The Science of Self-Healing; and The Yoga of Herbs, co-written with Dr. David Frawley, a groundbreaking book introducing the concepts of ayurvedic herbology to the western public.
This Textbook of Ayurveda comes as more in-depth ayurvedic education programmes develop in the West. It contains the necessary foundation for the understanding of a medical model far removed from the western allopathic paradigm. To understand and practise ayurveda, one literally needs to adopt, to immerse oneself in, a completely different perspective. Dr.Lad's book contains chapters on the Six Philosophies which underpin ayurveda, from the unthinkably ancient Sankhya philosophy of creation, which also forms the basis of Buddhism and some aspects of Yoga; to the Nyaya science of logic; to Yoga itself, the profound science of psychology and human potential.
Then we explore the system of 20 qualities of nature; the five elements; the three humours (Doshas) and their 15 subtypes; the concept of Agni or Digestive Fire; the Dhatus or body tissues; the Srotas or body channels; Ojas, Tejas, and Prana or the subtle humours; and Digestion and Nutrition. Each aspect is explained and related back to western anatomy, physiology and pathology. The important connection is also made between each aspect and the mind, which in ayurveda is considered a distinct but interdependent part of the body. There are copious appendices and tables on the various systems, ayurvedic properties of food, and other useful information.
A notable feature is the high quality of production. This is refreshing - and I would say necessary, if ayurvedic education is to be taken seriously by mainstream medicine. To be frank, I am fed up of poorly written, edited, designed and produced books from India. Even so-called textbooks are appallingly arranged, sometimes with no indexes or useful means of finding information. This book is clearly illustrated with line drawings, attractively designed, and printed on good paper. Two of the book's editors are ayurveda and Sanskrt instructors in New Zealand. If such talents were used more often in the editing and production of ayurvedic books, the credibility and reputation of ayurvedic education and publications would no doubt increase.
But does the book really deliver the goods? In my opinion, a lot of the correlations with western anatomy and physiology are speculative, and Dr.Lad should admit they are so. A lot of the material, while interesting, is simply not standard ayurvedic training, traditional or otherwise - and therefore misleading. If, instead of trying to pass off these wishy-washy correlations, Dr.Lad had worked on better translating and elucidating the traditional texts and principles, I believe the book would have more usefully served the growing interest in ayurveda as a clinical medical system. I feel that, while the book is insufficiently academic and credible for serious students of ayurveda, it still serves as a good introduction for the intelligent western reader.

Great History of Tiger UnitsReview Date: 2003-09-23
The combat history of these units is covered in some detail by the use of the units war diary which I found fascinating. It showed that the Tiger was not invincible if handled badly but fully supplied and in the hands of a good crew may have been a war winner.
All round a great book full of interseting photos, text and great colour pictures. This book is a must for avid Tiger Tank fans .
Tiger Angriff!Review Date: 2004-10-31
The strength of the photo collection is that it mainly originates from German soldiers' private collections and means that most of the photos are previously unpublished. Each chapter is devoted to one unit with a wide array of photograph situations, like combat, repair, transportation, behind the lines, etc. The author gives us an almost day-by-day account or unit diary of the units from when they were activated to when they were either disbanded, changed designations, or the war ended. The unit diaries contain the information of where the units were involved, number of Tiger tanks lost or gained, battle results, or some nice other tid bits of information. In addition each unit has organizational chart(s) showing not only the number of tanks in each platoon, but how the tanks were designated with numbers.
There are 30 pages of artwork done by Jean Restayn which is excellent and depicts the various camouflage schemes used by the units covered in the book. The artwork also highlights some of the special unit ingsignias. On the inside covers there are two maps, one the Western and Eastern Front, that show where the Tiger units were deployed over their operational lifetime. The maps were a nice addition.
Overall this book is a must for Tiger tank enthusiasts. It also provides a wealth of information within the photographs for modelers, reenacters, and the like.

I think this is a good selection of her work, but would rather recommend the penguin complete works. Anyway you can find in here some of her masterpieces:
Prelude and At the bay (I think one of them was first publish by leonard and Virginia Wollf in the Howgarths Press, VW reconigzing that she envied mansfield style): Onomatopeyic style for days of sun and sea
Je ne parlais pas français: More playful and cruel. Young
The fly: her masterpiece and probably the best short storie of all times. Complex, ironic, full of meanings.
If you are going to do a Mansfield tour start with
1.In a german pension: Her youth playful written critizising germans. Witty and inteligent
2- Bliss &stories: A littel to much sensibility but always great
3- The garden party & stories: She grows to inmense proportions
4-The dove nest& stories: Really ill. Strange stories presided by the fly
So good luck. I reaally envy you that will discover her. It is whole pleasure
