Peach girl is one of the sweetest manga I've ever read.
Having gone through many of the same issues with lost love and back stabbing friends I found myself really bonding with the main character Momo.
Every teen girl should pick up a copy as their next manga must have!

The amazing series continues in the original Japanese format! I don't want to spoil what's goin on but this is my favorite manga series of them all as a great cheesy teen romance that keeps you hooked right in the story! I highly, highly, highly, recommend this manga and I'm pretty convinced if you buy it you'll enjoy it.

I have volume 3, and have read one and two, and I could read them back to back, over and over. I can't get enough!

Momo has had a change of heart. Despite the fact that she had lingering feelings for Toji she has moved on and is now in a relationship with Kiley, the man who helped her through all of her prior romantic grief. Things are not as wonderful as they should be though. Momo's former friend (and enemy) Sae is on the warpath, trying to insinuate herself into Momo's life again by supplanting nasty rumors about her and Kiley, while rubbing into Momo's face that she and Toji are dating.

To make matters stranger there is a bizarre interlude with Nurse Misao that has left Momo skeptical about Kiley's feelings. When he says Misao and his older brother used to be an item is he really telling the whole truth? And what's worse, why does he have an old photo of a woman that may be Misao and him? And who is the strange girl that Kiley is meeting up with in the bookstore in secret?

I'm so happy, "Peach Girl" is back in all of it's angst y goodness. And this series proves to be better than ever. I am so utterly excited that not only are Momo and Kiley dating (finally) but that we now get to have an insight on who Kiley really is...and he seems to be much deeper vessel than we formerly gave him credit for. This playful individual has a dark side and a past and now that Momo is getting to know him better we finally get to venture into that side of him. Joy. On the other hand Toji has diminished into the shadows, but I am certain he will resurface, most likely whenever Sae plans something nasty on Momo.

Fans of Peach Girl rejoice... the second series is as good as the first, thus far.

It's finally happened!

Momo and Kiley are together! Kiley remains a true Wily-Kiley with his interest in Momo, but he definitely shows his sweet-side throughout the book. And, as always, he's the character which makes the comic funny and worth reading. Sae takes a back seat in this volume, appearing (I believe) only once, but we find our villain when Kiley's old girlfriend shows up...and appears ready to reclaim him. We learn some of Kiley's past in this volume, and also get a deeper side to him, as well. This Volume will leave you craving the next, seeking resolve to the many new mysteries which surface in this book. This volume (and in fact, the entire series) is probably one of the most re-readable. I frequently pick it up and read it all again, unlike some of my other manga, which is good one time through, then gets old.
This volume is written in the original right-to-left format. The benefit of this is that none of the artwork has been flipped, or altered. The downside is that, if this is your first encounter with this style, you will most likely get confused and dizzy trying to figure out the order by which to read the panels (but don't worry, you get used to it after a few pages or so, and there is instructions in the book).

Great book. Residents should use this book, if not buy it. Not terribly expensive either. Excellent. Don't like the EKG book by the same author though.

In concise and clear language, Prof. Park explains how a
medical practitioner can diagnose alsmost any known
cardiac anomaly in a child.

Having a scientific but no medical background myself,
I found it very readable. Some knowledge of cardiac
anatomy and electrocardiography are a prerequisite.

What is especially good is Prof. Parks comprehensive
approach to the diagnosis: all posible pathologies are
listed and when a particular observation
is possible in normal patients, he doesn't forget to point
this out too.

I have only read the 2nd edition of the book (1988), so
I cannot vouch whether the latest (4th) is up to date
on recent advances in the field, be it in pacemaking
capabilities or teratogenic discoveries.

THE Cards book for residents (and rotating MS4's)

Review Date: 2004-11-11
I bought this book on my 4th year medical student rotation for Pediatric Cardiology. It continues to serve me as a resident (just coming fresh off the Cardiology floor). The EKG section is invaluable. The description (and explanation of pathophysiology of) congenital heart defects is outstanding. I am told by fellows that this book has served them through the first year of fellowship then, before having to move onto more advanced texts. Only minus, no explanation of how EP studies work, which is not a huge minus because you won't be seeing much of that as a resident anyway. Bottom line: this is THE pediatric cardiology book that every pediatrician and every pediatric resident should have.

As a resident in pediatrics, you face the usual time constraints, yet you want to prepare yourselfs for electives by reading a comprehensible text. For Cardiology, I have found with Park's "Pediatric Cardiology for the Practioner" an outstanding text, which I actually prefer over more recent review articles for its easy to understand approach. The text is easy to read and is supported by the style of the figures and schemes. This book provides more than an introductory text for the pediatric resident with a general focus, it also provides a valuable and readily accessible resource for cardiology fellows.

This is the new edition of the "classic" textbook of Pediatric Surgery. It is the most comprehensive text available on the subject, a must for all practicing pediatric surgeons and aspiring pediatric surgeons. Perhaps a bit too comprehensive for non-pediatric surgeons looking for a simple reference book to keep on their shelf. Nevertheless, even in its fifth edition, this remains the "bible" of Pediatric Surgery.

The bible of pediatric surgery.

This two-volume textbook is the definitive reference book for pediatric surgery as practiced in the U. S. and Canada. As a pediatric surgeon, I use it frequently to refresh myself on the more complicated or unusual cases that I encounter. In addition, it is a good source of material for preparing educational presentations for other health care professionals. Every pediatric surgeon or resident in a pediatric surgery residency training program should own this book.

That said, this book is perhaps a bit too much for the general surgery resident or medical student in the middle of a busy pediatric surgery rotation. He or she might do better with Principles of Pediatric Surgery, a single-volume textbook covering the essentials of the subject, also published by Mosby. This other book would probably also best serve other nonsurgical pediatric physicians for pediatric surgery reference purposes.

The second worst thing that can happen to your pet is for him to get sick or hurt; the truly worst thing is for you as the pet owner to be totally unprepared when accident or misfortune strikes. This book covers all the basics of first aid care for dogs and cats, from cuts and bee stings to convulsions, choking, and traumatic, life-threatening injuries. Steps to take in any given situation are laid out one at a time, and a number of very helpful illustrations make all of the information as direct and understandable as it can be. The book is arranged alphabetically by first aid topic, so you can always find the information you need quickly and easily. You really don't even have to read the book. Just having it close at hand when something happens to your pet can make a real difference; it can even help save your loyal companion's life. I would recommend reading the book, though, or at least glancing through it. You can learn important warning signs to watch for in your pet's behavior and help catch a problem in its early stages. In cases of real emergency, knowing what not to do can be just as important as knowing what you should do. You would do well to follow the precautionary suggestions the book describes--putting together a pet first aid kit, for example. By no means can or should this book take the place of professional veterinary care, a point which the text emphasizes, but it can help keep your pet healthy and happy.

A must for every family with a cat or dog!

Would you know what to do if your cat or dog had an emergency? I worked on the book so I'm biased, but... "Pet First Aid" may help save your pet's life! From the American Red Cross, the nation's largest humanitarian organization, and The Humane Society of the United States, the nation's largest animal protection organization. All proceeds support the efforts of both non-profit organizations. Makes a great gift for everyone you know that owns a cat or dog.

This book is a really good reference to have around. When my dog's antibiotics were changed for an ongoing ear infection, I looked them up here to understand the change. In the index, you can look a drug up by either generic or brand name, which is really important for nonmedical people. There's also information on how to medicate your pet (easier said than done with a cat, in my experience) drug compounding, holistic practices, purchasing from online vet pharmacies, electrolytes, pet insurance, disaster planning, and first aid. Despite being written by a veterinarian, it's still easy to understand by a pet owner. Very helpful to have at home because I always have questions I think of on the way home from the vet.

Pills for Pets by Debra Eldredge, D.V.M.
Dr. Deb Eldredge is not only an award-winning writer and columnist on veterinary issues, but she is my friend and a fellow Belgian Tervuren owner/trainer/competitor. Deb works in an animal hospital outside Syracuse, NY and is a volunteer consultant for Canine Working Companions.
Her book, Pills for Pets, is truly an A to Z guide to drugs and medications for your animal companion, from dogs to horses, from iguanas to cats! This book was awarded the Muse Medallion for Best Health and Care Book for 2003.
Pills for Pets is a comprehensive, easy to use listing of prescription and over the counter drugs - including cautions, possible side effects, and drug/food interactions. Deb Eldredge makes it very clear that the information in her book is to allow pet owners to supplement their knowledge about veterinary care, not replace it.
Dr. Eldredge gives advice and cautions about homeopathic remedies, herbal treatments, vitamin and nutritional supplements; all of which are becoming very popular with pet owners. Her book also helps pet owners in choosing the right veterinarian and pet insurance. She also touches on emergency first aid and how to provide long-term nursing care for animals, as many of our pets are living longer.
Of interest to anyone who wanted to save money by buying medications and fad diets on the web, a must read is chapter 7 which makes you aware of the dangers of Internet purchases. Emphasis in Dr. Eldredge's book is that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Pills for Pets is an excellent resource and a "must have" for any pet owner!

Whether you own an iguana, dog, cat or horse this book arms you with the information you need to ensure that your pet is getting the best medical care possible. The book includes prescription and over-the-counter meds, homeopathic remedies, herbal treatments, and a guide to emergency care and first aid.

This book is a well written and clear guide for pet owners. The information is timely and thorough and covers a wide spectrum of topics beyond medication that every pet lover will appreciate. It's also a great help in resolving those questions of "is this serious (requires a trip to the vet) or should I wait a day and see if he gets better?" The author has packed a wealth of knowledge into a small package! I think this book should be sold in veterinarians' offices everywhere!

A positive view of power for women
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-15
In this excellent book, psychologist Priscilla V. Marotta, PhD, provides helpful guidance for women seeking to become more comfortable with their own power. A key premise is that, while many women have learned to associate the word "power" with domination, control, and power over others, positive power is the ability to achieve, take action, and use one's power in cooperation with others. Marotta describes 10 power robbers common to many women (all of which felt very familiar) and 10 useful power lessons to replace them. I appreciated her summary of feminism from 1792 to the present; she included this because of her belief that our past provides needed keys to our future. This summary leads to a thoughtful chapter titled "Feminism Needs a Facelift," which emphasizes the need to eliminate internal conflict and focus on a common theme where all options are available to everyone...men and women. In "The Wisdom of Women," Marotta describes strengths common to many women that we need to better value and appreciate; my only concern here is that she alternates between including terms like "tend to" and using terminology that makes it sound like all women share certain characteristics (which doesn't take individual differences into account). This is a minor issue, though. She concludes with an invitation to celebrate and further women's accomplishments. Throughout, Marotta uses helpful examples with real women and a cognitive approach that provides a positive alternative to limiting ways of thinking.

A great wake-up call for women!

Using many true stories, and offering confidence building tips, this is an ideal disussion tool for mentors and work colleagues. It validates women's efforts to take their place along side men and share equally in the power of management and decision making. Also has a great resources section at the end, including a list of every key women's group.

Has a lot of nice tables and diagrams. Comprehensive chapters on PM&R problems (i.e. spasticity, pressure ulcers) and tools (i.e. orthotics, pharmacology), but doesn't have chapters that breakdown/summarize management of patients with stroke, TBI, SCI, etc. Reading it feels more like reading something in paragraph form (details, explanations), as opposed to quick outline form (for instance like those BRS books). In my opinion, too large to carry in your white coat pocket, but good to keep as a reference.

I was able to purchase a copy of this at the recent AAPMR conference in Philadelphia. It meets and exceeds all the expectations of a second edition for this type of reference. The content has been updated, the layout and appendicies are much improved and easier to read, and the editorial board features reknowned and well-respected international practitioners and academics in PMR and related fields. I find myself referring to it frequently in my daily clinical practice (especially the excellent chapter on pharmacology). I wish the book was available when I was a resident and when I was reviewing for the boards. The appendices which include plates of normal x-rays and MRI films (all clearly labeled), as well as a comprehensive updated addresses and phone numbers of important PM&R resources, are invaluable. At a popular price of 36.95, it is not only the best book of its kind, but the best buy of all time. I highly recommend it!

Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-13
This book is very thorough in its treatment of select nonlinear programming techniques for both unconstrained and constrained problems. The author provides an in-depth coverage of several useful methods, including newton, quasi-newton, least-squares, penalty, augmented lagrangian, quadratic, SQP, and even discontinuous nonlinear programming. Much emphasis is placed upon various quadratic approximation methods. It should be noted that several other well-known methods are not treated in any significant detail. The author seems to have made a conscious choice to concentrate on a set of core techniques at the expense of some others. In my view, this decision makes this book an excellent reference for those wishing to better understand the nuances and implementation details for the chosen methods. For the same reason, this book is probably not as well-suited as an introduction to the broader range of optimization methods. Since there are plenty of other books to choose from for this purpose, the author's choice to focus on some core methods enables his book to stand apart quite uniquely.

While the book's content is excellent, the presentation could be improved somewhat. More examples and illustrations would help on this count, as would a better arrangement of headings and sub-headings. Since it appears that the author's intended audience are those who already have some primary knowledge of the field, this shortcoming is not significant. This is a book designed to take such readers to the next level, which it does quite well.

This is a good book from an award winning author and researcher in this subject. However, the 2000 publication date shown refers to the release of the paperback version. There is no new content since 1987 when the 2nd ed. was originally published in hardcover.

I prefer Dennis and Schnabel's _Numerical Methods for Unconstrained Optimization and Nonlinear Equations_ for Newton-derived methods in unconstrained optimization, but Fletcher's book has the added material on constrained optimization (Part 2) that makes it more complete if one wants a single reference that covers the gamut of optimization.

This is a very well-written book. It achieved both mathematical clearness and simplicity. I especially like the first part, unconstrained optimization. On the one hand, unconstrained optimization is very widely used. On the other hand, there isn't much content in it. Yet, there aren't many books explaining this small area clearly. This book starts with describing the structures of all methods, which gives you a sort of bird's eye view. It then devotes one chapter to each of the 3 major families of optimization methods. Comparing with another popular book, Numerical Recipes, which is orgnized by individual algorithms, this book will cerntainly gives the reader better understanding of the essence of all the algorithms. And as the name says, it's about 'practial' methods. You'll have no problem to implement the algorithms in the book and there are also many working examples to help you see how an algorithm works and help verify the implementation.

A classic and must-have for researchers using optimization

I recommend this book for anybody needing to learn the basics of optimization as well as a reference for people already in the field. Dr. Fletcher covers the basics, advantages, and disadvantages of optimization methods capitalizing on his long experience on the field. I find the book to be clearly written and easy to follow. Although notation is clearly explained when introduced, the author gives a notation summary at the begining of the book. This makes the book usefull as a learning as well as a reference. Although the book has not changed since the second edition, the optimization methods it describes are still the most-widely-applicable ones.

I am working with one of my sons using this book and it is excellent. There is a video series that goes along with the book that is great too. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to learn algebra or work with their kids - using the videos, it can be a self paced course that was well thought out and very detailed.

This book totally helps!

Being a mathophobe, I was terrified when I registered for the class. But since I had to buy this book for my math class, then math all of a sudden was really easy! I actually understood the WORD problems with ease and what not!! The only thing that keeps me from giving it a 5 star rating is that there are many typos in the book, especially in chapter 6.2: there are at least three typos in this specific area if and when you are assigned the odd problems; and what's more, if you want a good laugh, check out pages 455-456. You'll see what I mean!

I am a 34 year old student that has struggled with math my entire life. I have failed many math classes in college because I just did not clearly understand how to do the math problems. I enrolled at Harbor College in Willmington, CA this fall 2003 and purchased this required book. To my amazement, this book is written in a way that a dummie like me can easily learn all the lessons. I now have a class grade of 95 and FINALLY because of this book, I can do algebra word problems, and I understand how to check them. I am even tutoring some of my classmates, WOW! thats not too bad for a dummie! I thank the author for creating the best prealgebra book I have ever seen. It is written STEP-BY-STEP and in the most basic format that can be explained. Please only purchase this book. You will not be dissapointed and you will pass prealgebra. All thanks to K. Elayn Martin-Gay, what a job you did putting the book together!

This workbook is packed with a lot of examples and rich exercises; which are presented in incremental development fashion. My two children, 10 and 11 year old, have high math aptitude; two grades beyond their average level. I bought this workbook to help them in the transition to algebra and trigonometry. They are able to go thru most of these execises in one summer. I must admit the quality of the lessons and exercises have this quite enjoyable and intuitive for my children to absorb.

A MUST FOR STUDENTS CONSIDERING ALGEBRA

Being that I am 28 years of age and a freshman in college, I was placed in the remedial math class for which this text was required. I was terrified due to the fact I failed math in high school and even the WORD Algebra scared me. This book has great examples and it really helped me understand the concepts of Algebra. I have a 97% average in my class and when I go onto Algebra I next term, I won't be so terrified! :)

I HIGHLY recommend this text as a supplement for any pharm class. It's condensed enough so that it's not overwhelming, very well organized, and it covers the fundamental pathophys associated with each type of drug. It filled in the gaps left by my pharm class, and I think it'll prove to be useful in clinic as well.

Huge, but excellent for really understanding material

Exceptional for learning the basics. I had a few all-important concepts that I just couldn't get: G-proteins, the anterior pituitary hormones, and the alpha/beta/cholinergic agonists and antagonists. After struggling to learn each of these several times from lecture notes and other books, I turned to this book. It worked well for me because it teaches in a conceptual way and helps develop your understanding of the material. It will take a little more time, but if this is the way you learn, it will really help.

I went back to this book many times when I ran into difficult questions reviewing for Step 1 and realized that I didn't really understand the basic concepts.

Not the book to use the night before your pharm exam: for that, I'd use the small Katzung and Trevor.

A really nice review book

Professor Golan used his copy notes for this book in our class this year, so we basically had the book without the cover or index, but otherwise it was all intact. Almost everyone in our class really loved the book--it gives a basic overview of each area of physiology and pathophysiology and then described the therapies used to treat the pathology. The book was mostly written by students, and it shows b/c everything is super easy to understand and is really geared towards a medical student. Also, this seems to be the only comprehensive textbook of pharmacology that divides the drugs by pathophysiology on the market, as everything else (Katzung, etc.) are laundry lists of drugs, albeit providing more information on each separate drugs. I think I would supplement this book with Katzung (or vice versa.) In any case, I recommend it!

Just get this book as soon as possible!

The second edition is usually better than the first one, and the first one was simply excellent! A great book, with a problem-based learning approach in mind, updated and with many new and important chapters (Protein Therapies, Drug Delivery Advances, Pharmacogenetics, among others). The good thing with this book is that any chapter deals with the necessary coverage of anatomy, physiology, pathology and so on before coming to the drugs facts. With the early med student in mind, the book will be useful for any health related career. The book is clear, is concise -notwithstanding comprehensive-, and with a complete set of drug facts tables at the end of most chapters. Simply said, the kind of book I'd liked to write myself.

One more thing: The book is brilliantly complemented by its companion book, "Principles of Pharmacology Workbook", by S. Farrell, a great account of more than 100 clinical cases regarding each chapter of the main book, with no less than five questions -and their corresponding answers- for every one of the cases. The ideal complement to make this couple of books the best pharmacology books in the scene today. I work very actively with both of them in teaching my own pharmacology courses.

A unique case-oriented phramacology

Armen(Tashjian) and others have invented a unique type of pharmacology textbook in collaboration with Harvard Med Stud! Each chapter begins with the short introduction of a case report, relevant to each drug. This may give an easy undestanding of clinical significance of the drug to med stud, interns, pharmacologists and even clinicians. I believe that it will evolve into the classic of pharmaocolgy textbook!!
