Useful Guide to Learn Music Theory

I know nothing about music theory and have read five to six books on this subject. Most of them are written for seating in the ABRSM's examinations or just enough for playing one musical instrument. However, this book is tailor-made for layman, which is very detailed written in academic and professional style. To me and those who know nothing about music at all, it is very good "road signal" to get into it.

I picked up guitar about 3 year ago and wanted to understand music theory. This book started simple, used lots of examples and built to an advanced level. I have a solid grasp of musical concepts that used to mystify me. I've really enjoyed it and look forward to studying volume II!

I used this textbook (as well as Vol. II) when I was doing my Musicology and Composition studies. Since then, I have devoured several other Theory textbooks, but this set remains the greatest yet written. Were I teaching, I would swear by it.

I never played any musical instruments or even sang extensively using sheet music, and therefore knew nothing when I arrived at college to take my first music theory class. With this book, I went from knowing nothing to being at the top of my class! Turek is just phenomenal with how genius this book is! I now tutor kids in music theory who have had it all their lives, it is that great! Thanks Dr. Turek!

This is an excellent book for gaining a good fundamental knowledge of music theory. I picked the book up at a university bookstore where it is used in a formal music department instructional setting. However, the mature, disciplined musician who can set aside study time to work through this book for self instruction will enjoy it and greatly improve their musical ability. In particular, I found the selection of musical examples useful, enjoyable and fun. Overall a great book.

This is an excellent review for the NREMT exam for EMT-B certification. It is well organized, helps you pinpoint areas where you need to study more, and is written very much like the actual test.

The questions in these practice tests are much more difficult than those found in online practice tests, which tend to be over-simplified. Just as important, this book is from an authoritative source; I found some answers in the online sources which were just plain wrong.

The NREMT exam is as much about test-taking ability as it is about subject matter knowledge, and that's where this book really helps. In particular, there are many questions on the actual exam where the choices contain information which looks very simple at first glance, but which in fact contains very subtle differences. The questions in this book give you those types of choices, and train you to read each question carefully looking for those nuances which are the difference between a right answer and a wrong answer.

Your first time through the questions in this book may be a wake-up call if you don't really know your stuff. But it's better to get a wake-up call before the test, rather than during the test. I passed on the first try. Good luck!

I have read through both Volume 4A and 4B. These two texts are invaluable resources for teaching Environmental Chemistry at the Junior-graduate school level. Both books are well written and include the fundamentals of studying air, water, and soil pollution. As a former student of Dr. Yen, I can say without reservation, that he is a motivational and superior college professor. Now that I am teaching college-level courses, I always recommend that my students make the investment and purchase his books. Personally, I have found them to be invaluable as reference materials.

Environmental Chemistry is a fine text book. It would provide a solid basis for any Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering Course providing the basics in understanding Environmental Chemistry. The book features a quantitive, mathematical approach to the subject. It is well referenced. And the problems at the end of each chapter will help a student better understand the material presented in the text. I look forward to the publication of its companion volume.

I have found this book to be excellent. As a researcher, educator and consultant, I often need a book that explains chemistry and its impact in environmental engineering. Rarely have I found one book that covers the field so completely as this book. What I like most is that it is an applied book. Environmental Chemistry is clearly and concisely covered. Recommmend it as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate level classes as well as a general reference source for professionals.

The vol.4A of this book includes every topic of our environmental problems, from lithosphere to biosphere and was decribed from the view point of a engineer. Many principles of evvironmental chemistry and engineering models are introduced in this book. And all of these materials were written by the author in a very clear way, so the students can follow this book very easily. It would be a good book in the courses of environmental engineering or applied chemistry.

Comprehensive and Easy to Read

Review Date: 1998-12-16
This book provides an extensive introduction to environmental chemistry. Although it is most suitable for a graduate level course in environmental engineering, it is also a good reference book for chemical/petroleum engineers and environmental chemists. The short introduction for each chapter enables students or engineers to review the basic problems before going to the thoroughly discussion of the principles. The unique feature of this book is that the overall theme of the book is to link chemical principals with environmental issues.

The first chapters are an overview of physical, organic, analytical, colloid and surface chemistry. The technical level of the chemistry presented in these first chapters and subsequently applied in rest of the text are fairly high. This suggests that the student taking a course based upon this text needs to have some previous coursework in chemistry, particularly physical chemistry.

The remainder of this volume treats each of the five major global cycles (envirospheres), and focuses on the important environmental chemistry issues: The lithosphere - minerals and energy sources The atmosphere - air structure and properties The hydrosphere - water resources The pedosphere - soil chemistry The biosphere - life

The text is written clearly and topics are covered in a logical sequence. The book covers the important aspects of each of the envirospheres and is fairly comprehensive. No text (even in 762 pages) can cover everything, however. One omission noted, for example, was that there was no mention of natural gas hydrates in deep oceans or permafrost regions. These ice-like solids account for a significant amount of carbon in the lithosphere and also may play a role in the balance of methane as a greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. In the chapter of atmosphere, it is also lacks of some detailed discussion on free radical chain reactions, oxygen radicals, and hydroxyl Rradicals.

Each chapter concludes with a problem set. In many cases these exercises serve the purpose of giving a student an "order o magnitude" appreciation of different environmental chemical issues.

Besides references to other books and papers at the end of each chapter, there is an appendix that lists a number of relevant web sites. This is a nice touch for the new electronic age. One gripe is that several figures have very small type from being shrunk to fit, and so the text is very small, and sometimes is barely legible.

There is a companion text, volume 4B. This book has as its focus the application of chemical engineering processes and unit operations to solving environmental problems.

"Erin Ryder" is an excellent story with a heart warming moral. This book has heart, soul and intrigue. Although the setting is renaissance in nature, it seems appropriate to current events. I have purchased the next two books in the series and can't wait to read them. This series would transfer well to the silver screen and should.

Heartwarming Tale of Love and War, Betrayal and Forgiveness

Review Date: 2006-02-12
This book represents a big departure from my usual reading material. Normally I'm not a big fan of fantasy or of war stories, no matter how intriguing the central character might be. But somewhere in the first few chapters, I found myself hooked!

As previous reviewers have noted, this is not a tale for young children. The graphic images of war seem almost too realistic at times. But "Erin Ryder" is so much more than a description of battle. It is the story of a young girl - both heroic and flawed - as she struggles against the confines of class bigotry,to become a great leader.

Erin is adept at battle and can easily defend herself against the point of a sword. The far bigger challenge for her is to rise above the sharp remarks and unkind doings directed towards her from those who consider themselves to be her superiors.

Dazzling kingdoms and characters come to life throughout the story. The reader learns as much from Erin's setbacks as they do from her successes. The ultimate theme of the book is one of love and forgiveness. They truly do conquer all.

I'm very much looking forward to reading additional books in this series. Now that I'm hooked on the story, I find that I don't want it to end.

Erin Ryder was a very unique book that highly satisfied my need for a good read, I know the price is a bit high but believe me it is worth it. The on problem with the book is the fact that the setting often changes rapidly, but there is a map in the front eliminates that problem. The story provides plenty of action and the gore is limited. The plot is strong, and twists and turns in it add to the problem of who is the main nemisis.

This book is choc-full of useful techniques for good, solid business communication. The samples are well thought-out and are very true to life. However, the questions, especially the ethics questions do not have any answers provided. Even the instructor copy doesn't have any of the answers, so effectively it boils down to your opinions and whether or not you can defend them. Yee Hah, just like real life.

I always thought I was good at communication until I read this book (text book really). I was particularly impressed by the examples of emails that on the surface look fine until the writer points out the loop holes. Despite its title this book comes in hand for many situations well outside business. I have also used my newly acquired skills in academic, political and philanthropic forums and received very positive feedback from colleagues who noticed a change. Buy this book.

I use this book for my primary text in a Business and Professional Communication class that I teach. The students like how the book is organized; I appreciate the examples that we can use in class for discussion.

Beyond that, the AIDA approach to business writing is clear and easy to use once students get the hang of it. My students' major project is to work with an organization in solving a communication problem, they are responsible for writing memos and reports to both the client and me.

However, I guess that the biggest endorsement is the number of students who do not resell this book at the end of the semester. I have had several tell me that this is one of the few books that they will take with them when they graduate because they view it as a good reference book.

An Excellent Reference Book

Review Date: 2006-09-03
This is the only reference book I have and need on Exercise Physiology. Most useful to me are chapters on performance enhacement, high altitude acclimatisation and physical training for seniors. The first few introductory chapters and the first few pages of each chapter remind me of my basic life sciences. The authors then focus on the application of cell biology to training. The thing I like most about this book, is that there is no "guru talk". Every piece of advice is based on currect research.

The book is divided into 7 sections. 1. Nutrition, 2. Energy production, 3. Energy Delivery & Utilisation, 3. Enhancement of Energy Capacity, 4. Environmental Stress, 5. Body Composition & Weight Control, 7. Successful Aging, Disease Prevention.

It's a very thick book, but the paper quality is high and the colourful illustrations make it a joy to read. However, this is not simple book for the average man on the street. There is nothing sensational here - just pure science. Readers without a background in the life sciences may not be able to follow.

This book is a great help in understanding what is happening within the body conerning sports training and nutrition. It is based on uncountable research studies and presented in a very readable form with ample graphics illustrations. The book helped me not only to understand more, but also to improve fitness and even loose some weight. It goes very far beyond compared to what one gets told in fitness centers. The main approach of the book is based on energy considerations. Understanding how the body handles energy makes it possible to describe the effects of exercising and performance much more deeply. I would recommend this book to every exerciser, who likes to improve physically and understand background matters. Basically, it's a textbook for sports students. But people outside, like myself, can greatly benefit from it, as well.

I am a Personal Training manager with a Physical Education undergraduate degree and Health Preservation and Rehabilitation graduate degree.
I consider that the science of exercise physiology should constitute the basic knowledge for anybody who wants to understands the way the human body functionates and acutely and chronicaly adapts to the exercise stimuli.
No matter you are(or preparing to become) a PE teacher, sport medicine specialist, personal trainer, physical therapist, athletic coach, etc, you should understand the science of exercise physiology.
Dr. McArdle's " Exercise physiology" is definetely one of the most complete books ever writen on the subject. With miriads of grafics and pictures, and tons of scientific research descriptions and results, the book is quite pleasing to read and very convincing.
With more than 1000 pages, definetelly worths its price and even more. Contains as much information as you could find in 3-4 good scientific books and much more than the complete colection of "Muscle and Fitness" starting from 1970.
You can find detailed informations together with all the book ilustrations and even 4 complete chapters at: www.connection.LWW.com/go/mcardle

The Winner!

Review Date: 2003-10-06
Although it runs to 1158 pages, this winning book, long recognized as THE leading exercise physiology text, stays succinct and engaging--and not one page too long. A key asset of this book is its close engagement with the scientific literature, which appears throughout in the form of unobtrusive but crucial little superscripted numbers that cite published studies. The references exceed in both depth and richness other exercise physiology texts like Baechle's very good "Essentials of Strength and Conditioning," Power and Howley's popular "Exercise Physiology," and certainly the authors' own 678-page "Essentials of Exercise Physiology," a shorter text that breezily dumps its references at the end of each chapter without numbering them or citing them in context. The definitive coverage of many popular fitness subjects, from exercise selection to steroids to nutrition, make this masterful book not only a pre-eminent text, but great reading for any consumer who, tired of the ridiculous claims of the diet and fitness industry, seeks authoritative answers.

If you only own 1 book it should be this one (excellent reference for 'Flame Wars'). A good physiology book is a must if you wish to be 'educated' on exercise and nutrition. Understanding how and why the human body works is very important if you plan to train others or be your best. If you buy 1000 bodybuilding, fitness and health newsstand magazines they will still not contain the information you will find in one good human physiology book, and this is one of the very best. If you want to be able to hold intelligent conversations on the internet than you should have several books on physiology - I can't stress this enough. Learn about the food we eat and what happens to it after it's eaten. Learn all the reactions in the body, when and why they take place and how they effect your training, learn what makes muscle grow. If you want real facts get any good physiology book. Knowledge is power - learn the truth - you will find the real secrets in a good physiology book. In general these books are expensive, but worth it. You might also check for used copies at college bookstores, medical institutions or used book sales. NBAF 'very best'.

Fantastic shounen-ai series with a good plot

In this volume there are two long stories. The first one is with Ryo, Dee, Bikky and Carol. Ryo and Dee try to catch a serial killer, who first kidnaps and then murders young teenage girls. Meanwhile Carol thinks that she is followed by a stalker. Then there is a photo of Carol found near the last victim of the serial killer and it becomes obvious, that the stalker and the serial killer are one and the same person. But by then it's nearly to late...

In the second story Dee visits the grave of the person, who was like a father to him, and he tells Ryo in a cutback scene about this person, who was also a policemen, but not entirely on the right side of the law.

This series has been absolutely great thus far and after lots of sweet kissing and snuggling I'm now in for a treat: Dee and Ryo making love in the last volume of the series. ;)

Better then the last one.

This is my all time favorite series - even though it's only Shonen Ai it is the greatest Manga Series out there. The art is great and the story is funny and sweet in a lot of places, especially when it reveals how much the two main characters care for one another. It focuses on Dee Laytner and his persistence to get into the pants of his new partner Ryo Maclean, your average uke not knowing what to make of Dee's advances and Dee isn't the only one after Ryo, their new boss Berkley Rose is and Dee has his own admirers including one hyperactive jealous JJ, who hates Ryo. I just love this manga! I put off reading it until recently because it is "yaoi" and I'm not into male/male relationships, but these two are so-o-o-o pretty, you just don't think of them that way. Dee and Ryo are definitely heading into the final showdown of their relationship saga, so I can't wait until volume seven (some definite "bedtime" action was goin' on!). Carol, Ryo's friend, is stalked by a serial killer with a penchant for collecting hands from his victims, and Dee takes a look back at the man who inspired him to become a cop. All in all, a great lead up to the final volume. A definite read for those into a great romance/comedy.

I would like to thank Tully Moss for writing this lovely biography of Jim Goure. I knew Jim for little more than an hour back in 1975. He transformed my life such that a day doesn't go by that I don't think of him as my Spiritual Awakener. I say this because the morning after listening to a lecture that Jim gave in Charlottesville, Virginia my meditations were totally transformed such that an Inner LIGHT as bright at the noonday sun emanated from my solar plexus. That LIGHT still shines and it is with much gratitude that I now know this man a little better. I must admit that I was quite troubled by the event when it first occurred because I wasn't clear about what Jim had "done to me". I struggled for years with my own inner demons but as long as I made myself a channel of blessings and let the LIGHT shine outward to help others then all of my struggles vanished with incredible ease. Jim was and is a LIGHT to me and I give thanks for those few moments that I knew him. Steve Woods, Hyattsville Maryland

This is a must-read book for those who are seeking a deep understanding of spiritual matters and an awareness of what life is really about. Jim Goure was a man for all spiritual seasons, someone with both feet on the ground of wisdom and a heart possessed of the truth. I am a lifelong seeker of the truth, wherever it is found. As a physician I make my living helping others to heal themselves and find their ways along this same path. No information I have encountered anywhere else in my search resonates more with my higher self than the information I learned from Jim during the twelve years of my association and friendship with him. Tully Moss has made this experience available to those who never had the opportunity to know Jim while he was living. The lessons are simple, elegant and profound. Thank you, Tully, and thank you Jim, for making these things so.

I had the pleasure to know Jim Goure and put his training in my life starting in 1985. The simplicity of his method made it easy for me to
put his principles into my lifestyle. Although my life was good before
I met him, it became much better afterwards. If you're looking for a
way to make your life better that is plain and direct without any
"hocus pocus" involved, use this book as a guide and you wont regret
it. It's "fantastic" to the 10th degree!!!

Four Friends Find Fun entertains and educates the young and the old. I love to give this book as a gift. My children's friends love it, educators and daycare providers love it. I appreciate being able to have an intelligient conversation with my 10-year old on the different characteristics of people and how we can all get along better. I know that she now has an appreciation and an understanding of the differences we are all blessed with.

This is a cute book that will help parents and teachers educate their children about personality styles. It will also give children the mindset to be tolerant towards those different from them.

It's a great tool for schools and various organizations. I've already reccomended it to a few places myself.

Don't let this one get away!

Whether we like it or not-in this ever-shrinking world-we are all members of a global society. Now, more than ever, we must teach our children to understand and accept the differences in others, for it is one of the world's greatest challenges.

Where does a teacher or parent start to teach children this critical life skill? Well, you can start right here! I spent most of my life as an educator and an education consultant. I know this: If you put the right tool in the right hands, you'll get the job done. Four Friends Find Fun is an excellent educational tool. It's simple and very attractive, and it tells a story the way kids like it told.

I highly recommend it to teachers and parents. It can be used as a starting point that will lead to some very interesting and impacting teaching interactions with your kids. Don't let this one get away. A well done to the authors!

Powerful Lesson on Understanding Children

As the father of four children and one on the way I must say that I am deeply impressed with the simple brilliance of this book. I have long been a supporter of the DISC model for teaching and understanding others, but this book does so much more. If I had known as a young man the lessons taught in this book I would have been so much more successful at working with others. I would have had the ability to develop relationships based on mutual respect and appreciation for the unique qualities that make up each of us.

My children loved the book and laughed while they learned. They quickly identified themselves and their siblings based on the personality types. They can now easily identify the personality types of others. Surely, understanding these concepts at such a young age gives them an advantage in everything they do going forward.

Vera and Dr. Rohm, thank you for taking the time to create such a wonderful tool. This will help both children and adults communicate more effectively with others...GREAT JOB!

This incredible book help me understand my High I child and why she had trouble interacting with her High C teacher. I shared the book with the teacher and I have seen dramatic improvements in my child's performance and attitude about school.

I strongly reccomend this book to anyone who would like to better understand their children and help them understand themselves.

Foxy, the Best Book Ever!

This book is amazing! I really, truly think so! You will like this book if you love animals, especially dogs, and enjoy reading chapter books. I read this book first when I was eight, then when I was nine, but I think this book would be ideal for people aged ten to twelve. This book is, basically, about a boy who finds a dog whom he names Foxy. She is an abused stray, and cannot be trained. Trust me, this is an amazing book! It would be great if there were a sequel. Have fun reading it! I'm sure you will!

I must have read this book when it first came out in 1984, and it was one of my favorites. Now, reading it again later (for a Children's Lit class), I can see why. It's a bit sad, but a wonderful book.

It is a very good book and has a great ending. My favorite part is when Jeff finds Foxy, after being lost, and fixes her up and makes her happy.

I liked this book a lot. It was sad when Jeff and the dog named Foxy almost got killed in a car accident. It was happy too. Like when he found it. It was also iteresting that the kid Jeff could sneak out of the hospital. This time I actually liked reading it because it was like a adventure.

A great book about a boy and a dog
