Bud Day is, simply put, an American hero. We ought elevate men of his character and integrity rather than the spineless wonders who run this country. Bud Day - his name should be familiar to all patriots.

Of the many Vietnam era POW accounts I've read, this one is surely the most in depth and graphic in its descriptions. All by and about "Bud" Day who vividly recounts his story in a pure class act manner. This guy's somewhere between John Wayne and Albert Einstein, but no doubt would be the first to insist he's just one of the many who did his duty.

Must reading for anyone interested in subject matter

Col. Day puts the reader there with him. This is the ultimate "American Hero" story. It becomes difficult not to believe that you are reading a Tom Clancy novel.

I bought and read this book after hearing Col. Day speak at the U.S. Air Force Museum. I knew he could only highlight his POW experience in the hour and a half he had to speak. This book is a true testimony of the faith and courage it takes to resist torture, terror, starvation and captivity while maintaining one's dignity and honor under the worst circumstances imaginable. One cannot read this book without feeling immense pride in America's fighting men.

If you want to read a book that will make you proud to be an American, look no further! Colonel Day is a great hero and I appreciate what he and other Americans in Vietnam had to endure in preserving the right principles which represents the true American people. Thanks to Amazon.com for finding this book which I have enjoyed very much.

I have read all the deryni series and this one is a good one. There is a really good twist in this book that will affect the events in all the other books in the series. It is also action pact with a hint of mystery, magic, and suspence. A good read, should be the 2nd one read in the whole series. Enjoy!

I continue to enjoy this book, just watching Camber getting himself into more trouble.

Camber, the elderly Deryni lord who led a human revolt against his own magic-wielding kind in the land of Gwynedd, begins to cope with the aftermath of the successful coup.

King Cinhil, once a monk, blames Camber for the loss of his vocation and the infinite difficulties of his new life and is not coping with them (or his ertswhile magic-wielding allies) well at all.

If Camber's priestly son Joram knows his father, Camber will do whatever it takes to make sure Cinhil--and Gwynedd--come out right. Even risking death...or worse, his soul!

Camber, in this book and it's sequel (Camber the Heretic), is at his strong-willed, best-intentioned, and soul-searching best. His dilemmas and solutions to them, bad and good, make an impression on the reader as well as the kingdom he serves.

This review is actually directed at all Deryni novels. I havent read them for a few years and have moved several times and only have 5 or 6 of the total deryni series but am going to buy all of them again. They are among the best books I have ever read and I have a large collection of about 150 books. If you are a fan of SciFi/Fantasy you will love this book. Without giving away too much this is one of the most pivotal of all the books by giving away some of the intrigue and a double person?

Scince Fair Project Starting point

I had to purchase a Sciensaurus book for a college class and this book was an add on (buy two for less money). This is the book I use!

My 6th grade students were beginning their science fair projects and didn't have access to the internet. This is where I sent them for ideas.

The experiments are simple, the materials are minimal, the "science" is included but not primary, it is truly for those people who want their kids to experience the "hands-on" of science.

The index is set up in a chart so you can choose the topic~ earth, seasons, animals, rocks...across the top and then follow the column down to get all of the experiment options.

This book could keep a science teacher busy with experiments for an entire school year plus some!

Highly recommend this book for demos and Science Club

I've used many of the activities. Either as a demo, as a "set" or for students to do. The materials needed for the activities are inexpensive. The ideas presented in the book are creative and allow you to spend more "brain power" on other things. It includes all areas of science, no matter what you teach, it can fit in. I've used it for 9th and 10th and don't feel it is too "elementary". It's worth the money.

Leagues above most activity books

Review Date: 2000-07-13
I am so glad to discover this book is still available. It's far more comprehensive and intelligent than so many other activity books. Laid out clearly, with activities in various realms of knowledge that offer numerous variations so a parent could conceivably use this one book throughout a child's school years. I can't imagine a child not discovering the joys of science (broadly defined) when a parent introduces him or her to some of these delightful activities. The best thing about the book is that so many of the ideas don't require vast preparation, but can be done spur-of-the-moment.

A Poet for all people!!!
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-22
The SELECTED POEMS of LANGSTON HUGHE by Langston Hughes is exactly what is implied by the title. Absent from these "selected poems" are the more radical and controversial poems written by Hughes in the 1930s. After Hughes was forced to testify before the anti-Communist committee to defend himself, he shied away from the radicalism that so entranced him and other Afro Americans who saw socialism as an better alternative to Jim Crow.

In this selection of his poetry, there is no chronological order to the poems. Rather, they are divided into sections representing a specific theme. Here, Hughes was trying (?) to imitate Walt Whitman in arrangement. "Afro-American Fragments," "Feet of Jesus," "Shadow of the Blues," "Sea and Land," absent is the poem written for the Jamaican sailor Ferdinand Smith, SAILOR ASHORE, "Distance Nowhere," "After Hours," "Life is Fine," "Lament over Love," "Magnolia Flowers," "Name in Uphill Letter," "Madam to You," "Montage of a Dream Deferred," and "Words Like Freedom."

The last section of poems reveal Hughes as a patriot which he actually was in life. Hughes believed in idea of the real USA and what the nation could be without prejudice. The poems I,TOO, DEMOCRACY, AFRICA, CONSIDER ME, REFUGEE IN AMERICA, FREEDOM TRAIN, THE NEGRO MOTHER and so on in this section are indicative of a patriotism despite injustices.

For those interested in a more comprehensive ouvre of Hughes poetry, I strongly recommend the COLLECTED POETRY OF LANGSTON HUGHES edited by Arnold Rampersad and associate editor David Roessel. It contains the most up to date work by Hughes and "all" his "known and published" poems. I purposely emphasized "known and published" because according to some academics there is said to exist unpublished poems of Hughes written to a black male lover that has yet to surface.

Langston Hughes is the poet of black America. His work captures the aspirations, hope, joy, tragedy, anger, and pride of many blacks past and present. But, he is also a poet for the working class man, black and of any race. There is a reason his poems have been translated into many languages and continue to inspire. The other reviews here capture some the essential essence of Hughes spirit.

He, too, sang America

"Selected Poems of Langston Hughes" is a rich selection from several decades of this poet's work. Hughes (1902-1967) is a poet of many moods and voices. His work is at times mournful, humorous, sensuous, or ironic. Many poems capture the rhythms of African-American vernacular speech. A number of narrative poems tell stories of Black life, and a number of his best poems feature female speakers. He also writes poems of social protest that deal with the anti-Black violence that has plagued the United States for so much of its history.

The poems in this book are divided into several sections. One of my favorite such sections, "Feet of Jesus," contains poems which evoke the prayers, preaching, and religious songs of African-American churches. "Madam to You" contains a number of poems in which Alberta K. Johnson tells her story. A strong-willed entrepreneur who often challenges authority figures, "Madam" is one of the most delightful characters in African-American literature.

The other sections of the book contain many of Hughes' most memorable poems: the sensuous "Midnight Dancer" ("Lips / Sweet as purple dew"), "Mother to Son" ("Life for me ain't been no crystal stair"), "Theme for English B" ("I am the only colored student in my class"), and "I, Too" ("I, too, sing America. / I am the darker brother").

The lines I quoted from "I, Too" may call to mind Walt Whitman's great American poem "Leaves of Grass." Indeed, I consider Hughes to be one of the great 20th century poetic heirs of Whitman, and "Selected Poems" is a magnificent testament to Hughes' passion and vision.

Langston Hughes' poems makes my knees knock. There is a little thrill with each poem, like I'm landing in a vat of buttermilk, and splashing happily about. With the subject matters he dares tackle one would think it'd be more realistic to walk away from a deluge of his work in deep depression.

Not so.

Instead I walked away with a dreamy smile and knocking knees. His ability to cull the beauty from the horror is...is...is

I'm wordless.

Hughes is Pure

I had read several Hughes poems before buying this book, but I will admit that I had no grasp on the extent of his talent. These vivid poems were chosen by Hughes personally before his death in 1967.

They do so well to paint a picture of the time he lived -- of the blues, of love, of passion, of choices. He writes about faith and protest in a way that will move you.

I have read all of the poems exactly as they are placed in the book several times. I think I keep going back to them because this is poetry free of pretense -- it is grounded in reality and in sorrow.

Independent of age, of your ethnicity, and of your literary grasp, you will enjoy these poems. Simple and superb -- read them out loud.

Dreams Deferred

Review Date: 2001-07-16
Langston Hughes wrote poetry of exquisite pain and beauty throughout his life. His poetry can be sparse and rhythmic. It evinces visions of cities, the south, churches and deep muddy rivers.

Hughes touches on every subject important to life in 20th century America: family, friends, race, religion, love, music, prejudice and poverty. Each poem sparingly provides an image in words. Together these poems represent the great work of a true artist of the American Poetry.

One of his most popular and poignant poems is Harlem. It contains such beauty in his phrase - "a dream deferred" and such power in his words or does it explode?

I recommend this highly to anyone interested in modern poets and poetry.

It's the best atlas I've ever seen, it has clear images (sometimes, I think I'm seeing a photo, not a drawing), its "boxes" with information about muscles, etc. are very well done. And its "naming" of the organs, bones, etc. it's not as confusing as Netter's. I own Sobotta and Netter and, Sobotta, for me, simply defeats Netter in every single detail. A must have if you're a medical student.

Awesome!! I highly recommend Sobotta (Book/CD-ROM) whether used alone or as a supplement to Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy. I am a physician assistant graduate student at Marquette University and I find the illustrations & references to be very useful when studying for my gross anatomy lecture & lab. Sobotta provides modern imaging diagnostics, endoscopic images, color photographs of surgical views, etc. not found in Netter's. The CD-ROM has all the plates found in the book, but gives you the option to quiz yourself which is very useful. It also allows you to display/hide markers on illustrations, also useful for study purposes. Indexs, tables etc are cross-referenced. If you are looking for a tool to help you maximize your anatomy study/review & you have easy access to a computer/laptop with a CD-ROM, get the Sobotta CD-ROM. You'll find it a great resource!!!

All good stuff that makes one stop and think about life and existance. This lady is a GOLD MINE of talent and information which can help all of us understand who we really are and what we are doing here.

Recently I met up with a friend of mine who was carrying this book around in his car. When asked about it, he could not quit talking about how good it was, and that he could not put it down. After borrowing the book, I have to agree.

Michael Cox has done a fantastic job in spinning many different 'types' of book into this fantastic novel...Suspense, Horror, Fantasy, Romance, Humor. His attention to detail and his ability to place the reader in the mindset of the characters is what made the book a winner for me. Every few pages, I found myself thinking more like the characters and less like myself. While reading, it was truly like being drawn into a web. More than that, He has added a particular flair and re-created the mystical creatures of our fantasies with details and attributes that I have not found in books prior to this.

After reading the book, I had to get my own copy. I found that the author is continuing to write while doing book signings around the nation, and was lucky enough to be able to meet him at one of his engagements. I now consider that book to be one of my small treasures.

If you have not had the opportunity to read this book, take the time to do so. It is time and money well spent!

Breathtaking, Totally Captivating

Este livro foca muitos projectos de aviões da ex. URSS, e mostra que a indústria aeronáutica Soviética era mais avançada que a dos EUA.

Aconselho a sua aquisição.

Good book, Unusual subject. As with all books of this type, you have to question how many of these designs were "paper airplanes" that had no chance of ever being built. But it is still interesting to look through the vivid imaginations of the designers.

These books are becoming the gold standard for X-Planes

The previous books in the series have all been excellent, the German WW2 three volume set was wonderful, the British set was likewise great, and this book is excellent. What a suprise. As the title indicates, it covers the bombers in development from the end of WW2 to the fall of the Soviet empire and a bit beyond. Being a huge fan of "paper-projects" this book is right up my alley, going into detail on the various bombers and ground-attack planes that were in the design phase. Like the British works, this book covers the bombers that went into service as well, which ties in nicely with the background of the bombers that never were.

If I have to offer a criticism, it's that there aren't more photos and diagrams. Each bomber gets at least a photos or drawing, no matter how obscure. However, when they cover almost were's like the Tu-64 I want more photos, shots of the mock-up, etc. Offer me a feast and I'll want desert, I suppose.

I imagine that this series will follow the British ones, where we will next get a book on fighter developments of the same period, followed by a book on fighter and bomber projects of WW2. I can only hope that after this they will turn to the Japanese experimental planes of WW2 and a similar trilogy on the US aircraft projects. As I'm not sure if there are sufficient aircraft to warrant a book on the Italian projects of WW2, this extended series will become the primary reference for secret aircraft projects for the last 70 years.

If you have any interest in the subject, buy this book. It's that good.

X-planes have always held a special place in the aviation enthusiasts heart. The fascination with what could have been, and an enthusiasm for unheralded aircraft design are showcased in this amazing Midlands Publishing book by Tony Buttle and Yefim Gordon entitled: Soviet Secret Projects: Bombers since 1945. The book, chock full of photographs, diagrams, and models of projects that never made the prototype stage, allows each design to come to life for the reader. Gordon is considered the worldwide expert on Russian/Soviet aircraft and his access to OKB archives for Sukhoi, Ilyushin, Antonov, Tupolev, Myasishchev, Beriev, and Yakolev lend his books a perspective that few can match.

From the original designs for a jet bomber using captured German jet technology, to the adaptation of three interned US B-29 bombers into the TU-4 BULL, to the development of the Tu-95, Tu-22M, and Tu-160, the saga of Soviet bomber development is fascinating. Politics and connections with the Politburo won quite a few contracts for Tupolev OKB, some over designs that were far superior in performance. The Tu-160 BLACKJACK, originally a Myasishchev design, was handed over to Tupolev OKB for design finalization, prototyping, and production as a result of serious political lobbying by its Politburo and Defense Ministry sponsors. The Sukhoi bomber on the book cover, resembling in many ways the mythical MIG fighter in the movie FIREFOX, is one of the most interesting and attractive designs that never made it to production. Thanks to this book, we get the chance to learn more about what was once a sketch on a designer's notepad.

The aviation books written by Gordon and released under Midland Publishing, Aerofax, and Red Star banners share the accumulated wealth of Gordon's contacts in Russia and his personal photo archive, especially in this volume. Secret Projects gives you a glimpse into the fascinating world of many Soviet and Russian designs that might have been lost forever. For that alone, it is worth every dollar of the cost. Highly Recommended.
