New York, New York: Vintage, 1967. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket as Issued. Revised Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Viet-nam Reader By Marcus G.Raskin and Bernard B. Fall Articles and documents on American foreign policy in the Viet-Nam crisis. Bernard Fall and Marcus Raskin have been among the most clear headed American critics of this country 's Viet Nam policies. The book of selected readings they have put together is, in to my knowledge, the best place now available for non-experts to begin their acquaintance with a lasting years or so of the Viet Nam situation. . In is also probably the right book to recommend to the student who wants to find out more than what the newspapers have told him about the Viet Nam conflict. ~ Louis Lipsitz, American Political Science Revue.

Midgley is something of a marvel - a true common-sense philosopher. I'm a bit baffled as to why she doesn't circulate more than she does.

I strongly recommend purchasing this brief article - it's dirt cheap, and a good introduction to her meatier and more thorough books such as _Evolution_as_a_Religion_ (a defense of what Evolution really is, as well as what it means for the stories we tell of ourselves and our world: it is not a proposal to turn evolution into a religion or an attack on evolutionary theory, only an attack on some of the dramas that slip in under the aegis of that legitimate scientific theory, distorting the theory and perverting human nature as a result) and _Science_and_Poetry_. You really ought to buy both.

I've known for some time that "religion" is not equivalent to Protestant fundamentalism, but is a dimension of anthropology, rather than some kind of "idea-virus" or "meme" that operates as something additional and superfluous to the fullness of our humanity (the bogus science and metaphoric underpinnings of Dawkins' "meme" is addressed in both of Midgley's books that I mentioned above: it is not addressed in this article). I've also been aware that the dramas and metaphors that are used by many who champion "reason" against "superstition" are themselves dependent upon and indebted to the dramas and categories inherited from their chosen enemies ("the children of light" vs. "the children of darkness," anyone?). I've also noticed that they seem a bit preoccupied with Protestant fundamentalism, and rhetorically equate that with Christianity. How irritating and conversation-stopping for the rest of us.

However, I'd never really considered at length the mythology (I do not use that word pejoratively or derogatively - I'm quite comfortable talking about my own) of those who live through the peculiar drama of "scientism," or the actual symbolic world they live in. Midgley shows us what that is, and compares it with some of the parallel elements she finds unfavorable in other traditions/mythologies. She is not simplistic. She recognizes the complexity of this kind of dramatic/religious/symbolic phenomenon, and yet speaks about it rather simply, in a manner that any literate person can grasp.

Highly recommended. If you are limited on time, at the very least read it together with _Evolution_as_a_Religion_.

What many need to know when about campaigns and elections

This is a very good book and gives a solid over view to the workings of a campaign, especially for those that do not have loads of money. It also gives a good understanding about the elections process that seems mystical/complicated to the average voter.

Of particular interest was the fact that the author actually has run an elections department as Chief Elections Officer as I am worry of "Experts" that offer advice without having done it or experienced it.

Good Read for anyone considering running for office!

The warped case for Jew-hatred: Martin Jay "explains" how Jews cause antisemitism.: An article from: Midstream

Exposes academic antisemitism
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-20
Edward Alexander explains that a favorite cause of many academics is to support Arab terror against Israel. Arguments in favor of this stance based on justice or human rights are manifest nonsense. But we see that some academics find ways to rationalize all this. And, as Martin Peretz has said, the reason why this barbarism has such support is that the targets are Jews.

The author gives Martin Jay (a professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley) as an example of this replacement of scholarship by anti-Jewish propaganda. Jay says that antisemitism is indeed resurgent. But he blames it mostly on Ariel Sharon, "fanatical settlers," and, as Alexander puts it, those Jews who "protest the antics of tenured guerillas on the campuses."

It seems to me that no matter what Jews do, the Arab antizionists try to attack their rights. In my opinion, those who ask what the Jews should do differently would be better off asking what the opponents of Jewish rights should do differently. If these opponents of Jewish rights were willing to live in peace with their neighbors, everyone might be much better off.

Alexander shows how Jay finds suicide bombing of Israeli Jews to be just as counterproductive and stupid as Israeli action against suicide bombers. As the author says, "As always with Jay, cause and effect are reversed, as if the actions of firefighters were to be blamed for the depredations of arsonists." He's right. What Jay is saying is nonsense. And statements about terror and reaction to terror being equivalent are not an argument, but a caricature of an argument which I feel is used just to take up space and to pretend that something coherent has been written.

Congratulations are due to Alexander for exposing Jay's complicity in making antisemitism "academically respectable."

You'll see no atrocities here, but you'll feel the effect of the greatest atrocity, the Nazi regime. This is also the story of friendship, accomplishment, courage, and ageing.
