The book is excellent. Dr. Price writes in a very down to earth manner where you could not possibly misunderstand what he is trying to convey. I have really learned a lot from the book on how to properly pray and have sent the book to several other people to help them. I plan to even teach a bible study from the book. Yes, if you are not getting your prayers answered, this book IS THE ANSWER.

I absolutely loved this book. Dr. Price has taught me so much about prayer. I did not know you could pray the wrong prayer. In my whole life, I never heard a pastor from any church make that statement. I pray all Christians will get this book and learn how to pray. If Christians prayed like we are supposed to pray I think we could change the world. Thank God for this book.

Well-writen and based in Scripture

If you've seen Frederick K.C. Price on television, you know he's not shy about expressing his thoughts. What sets him apart from many of his contemporaries is that he does not resort to theatrics and jumping around and yelling. If he wants a particular thought to really sink in, he'll speak...very...slowly and make an extra effort to clearly enunciate every word so that it's understood. On TV he often repeats "We walk by faith, not by sight," and you know you're reading one of his books when you get to page 12 and the statement "At the moment you pray, believe that you receive what you have requested. Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Your faith is substance - it is something real, something tangible. It is evidence of things you cannot see." It's a dynamic book grounded in Scripture, not one of the many that "teaches" you how to "bargain" with God to get what you want. If anyone wants to know what lies at the heart of this book, it's very simple: Pray as the Bible instructs (and ample Scripture is offered here) and believe your prayers are being heard WHILE you pray. And remember, as Price points out on page 111, "Pray according to the Word of God." God has no obligation or interest in answering prayers that are based in selfish or destructive motives. Act as if you are asking God for what you need directly...because, in fact you are.

Alexander Seinfeld's book gave me extremely useful tools and exercizes to help me see my religion as a privalegde and an oportunity to come closer to our Creator. The ideas in the book are easy to apply and effective. Anyone that reads the book will certainly benefit from the ideas and exercises that it teaches.

Rabbi Seinfeld gives some good insight on Jewish Spirituality in comparison to spirituality of other faiths. One gets a pretty good feel as to the roots of the such texts as the Zohar and even Kabbalah. Good insight into prayer and the hebrew language.

In some spots, the text is a little bit too deep for a layperson to understand right away. However, there are other moments which may enable you to reread such sections. It definitely has potential as a reference tool.

Wow! For Jews who have looked elsewhere for meditation (like I did) this is a welcome surprise: we didn't have to leave OMMMM after all...

And for Frum Jews whose brachas sometime become a little unemotional (like me), Rabbi Seinfeld's "mind manual" will put a lot more KICK into them! You'll even surprise yourself with your kavanah...

An original, tremendous book and CD

Review Date: 2003-07-08
I have read many books and attended many seminars on spirituality and Judaism. Rarely have I found anything that comes close to this precious gem. Really it's two gems - the book and the CD.

Several things make Seinfeld's book unusual or even unique. First of all, it's highly intellectual. At the end of each chapter, I felt a real sense of clarity and ownership of the ideas and practices taught. This may be because I actually did the exercises according to the instructions of each chapter. But for the first time in my reading and searching I feel like I have a healthy intellectual grasp of these terms that I've been trying to understand - God, life, meaning, spirituality, goodness, love -

Second, it's not dogmatic - coming from a secular (raised Reform) background, I have been trying to figure out how to become more connected to my Jewish roots without becoming "religious". This book has done it for me.

Third, the author's secular/Buddhist background has enabled him to write interesting footnotes comparing and contrasting Jewish thought and practice with these. This information is helpful to me as I'd always assumed that every great religion was saying basically the same thing and Seinfeld tactfully points out where that is not true.

Fourth, the book is incredibly thorough, full of nuggets of information that together have shown me a Judaism that is not a hodge-podge of traditions but rather an awesome - amazing - holistic system.

It's as if I'd been staring at the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle for a few years and suddenly somone showed me a picture of what they're supposed to look like when completed. Now I can start to put them together on my own.

The CD, which Amazon sent with the book for no extra cost, is Rabbi Seinfeld teaching the concepts in the book. It's high-quality - sounds like he's right in the room with you! It is a very effective tool, because after listening to the CD the book made sense and was easy to read (otherwise, I might have struggled with some sections that are quite deep in the philosophy/mysticism).

I also like the fact that the appendix includes email addresses to contact the author and others. I have found these resources very responsive to my questions.

In summary, the book is like a handbook. I carry it around with me and find myself re-reading some sections while waiting in line at the bank, etc - especially the chapter on love.

Very well written. A truly wonderful story with lots of twists. The star characters come alive right before your eyes (you'd almost believe you'd known them for years...and, come to think of it, perhaps you have), and the action will give you goosebumps.
But this isn't just another "Stephen King" type novel featuring other realms of existence. It is also a novel with romantic undertones that bring the human emotion of true love to light. In other words, if you like to read (and even if you don't), you should read this book; there's something here for everybody.
Congratulations, Kathy Diamond, on a superb and very entertaining novel. Looking forward to the next one!

An awesome resource

Review Date: 2006-12-15
Aside from the matter of salvation read this because..

Jesus prayed for the church not to divid, yet we divided. The topic of baptism is one of the strongest dividing lines amongst those who profess Christianity. If the church is ever going to be united as a whole body working in unison its going to take people willing to study subjects like baptism and sit down and debate until there is an accord.

Despite what you may have been taught about baptism, despite whether or not your loved one died with out baptism, despite what all your church and friends believe about baptism, there is a black and white truth to baptism. The Bible is very clear on the subject, yet there is division.

The truth is its a matter of life and death. And after reading this book, it walks you through the logic, the facts, the history and the word itself and at the end you will see baptism the way it clearly is painted in the word. Its not needed to be read, but it takes the subject as a whole from the the Bible and puts all the peices together in one writting. So read this if not for yourself, but to help others and unify the those who profess christ.

I believe its essential. Any argument against youve heard will not stand up to truth. go to bebaptized. org and if that ignites you, read this book too.

A very provocative work

Even as someone from the reformed perspective, I found myself in substantial agreement with Dr. Cottrell's exegetical and theological conclusions that baptism actually confers the very blessings that those in the evangelical community, as well as many in the modern reformed community, believe it merely symbolizes (i.e. the remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit). His argument that baptism as a condition of salvation doesn't violate the doctrine of justification by grace alone since baptism is really a work of God and not a work of man, is very similar to the arguments of Luther on this issue and is not at all incompatible with the theology of the reformation. However, I didn't find his arguments and conclusions that the efficacy of baptism is exclusively tied to the exact moment it is administered to be a necessary inference from the biblical texts. Overall, this book is a much needed wake up call to the evangelical and Reformed communities to reexamine their presuppositions regarding the meaning and importance of baptism and the biblical teaching regarding its place in the salvation process of the elect.

Thorough, Scholarly, Objective

Cottrell is painstakingly thorough, yet his writing is well-organized and clear. You feel as if you've considered the subject from every possible angle. The result is a deeper understanding of God's amazing grace. Cottrell's scholarship uncovers meanings that even avid Bible students might have missed. And they all point to the magnificence of God's work.

Cottrell's approach is what makes this book so helpful. It's even-handed, an objective search for what the New Testament writers--and God--intended for their audiences to hear. Every seeker of truth should read this book.

Jack Cottrell tackles the subject of Baptism with an understanding that the reader will also be a seeker. Because of that, he approaches the subject with such enormous grace to keep the reader engaged all the way through. No one who reads this book will be disappointed, nor will they be offended by the way he handles the subject matter. I look forward to reading more of his books.

Agree or Disagree... Still a Great Read

Whether you believe as Cottrell does about baptism or not you can't help but to enjoy reading this book on the subject. The book is written in a style that any serious Bible student will enjoy and benefit from. Just the way that Cottrell explains salvation is worth reading the book for. This book will challenge any believer concerning their view on baptism and it's place in the Christian experience. I also must say that this book, unlike so many, does not defend the position so much as it explains it and that is refreshing. Read it whether you are in the Church of Christ or not. If not, and you read this book, you will respect what they believe even if you have an issue with this doctrine.

For Balance in Life Turn to the Ancient Wisdom

Review Date: 2006-08-02
In the rush of our lifestyle, instant is the watchword for our culture. BENEDICT'S WAY by Lonni Collins Pratt and Father Daniel Homan, OSB, helps you take a deep breath and learn from an unexpected source of strength. St. Benedict is often credited as being the father of Western monasticism. He lived in a time when chaos rocked Christianity and the situation seemed to be worsening with every passing day. In the middle of such chaos, Benedict was a man with order, sense and peace. Doesn't the quest for balance resonate with most of us?

The authors describe their purpose saying, "This book is our attempt to enliven the Rule of St. Benedict for those who have never read it, as well as those who are already familiar with the Rule." Father Homan is prior major of St. Benedict Monastery in Oxford, Michigan and has lived the Rule of St. Benedict for forty years. Lonni Pratt is an award-winning journalist and a Catholic laywoman who has informally associated with the monastery through friendship. The pair of authors have a common interest in Benedictine spirituality.

Thirty short chapters enlighten the reader about keys to spirituality like listening, prayer, work, stability, friendship, balance and celebration. Each chapter includes a quote from St. Benedict, then a brief section from a scholar of St. Benedict. Also a short devotional thought is included and a section of application called, "Going Inward." As the Rule of St. Benedict says about joy, "As we journey I this way of life and in faith, we shall run on the path...our hearts overflowing with the inexpressible delight of love."

Readers can expect insight and wisdom as they learn from St. Benedict. You can read the book daily in the morning or before bed or as a refreshing break in the middle of a hectic day at work.

Benedict's Way guides the reader easily into understanding God's intentions of our time here on earth. We have created a fast paced lifestyle that is self serving causing much anxiety. This is evident by the ever increaing need for lifestyle managing drugs. Our current society with all its technology and materialism has the highest rates of divorce, depression, sucide, etc., in history. It seems that all this financial wealth has done little to make us truly happy. Is it possible that God in is infinite wisdom understood this and inspired spiritual teachers like Buddha, Mother Terresa, and St. Benedict to teach us how to live?

Pratt and Homan have challenged the reader to look at their own life and reflect on it. For me personally this book has opened my eyes to my own self serving ways. Each chapter is thought provoking and one of my favorites Balance and Celebration caused me to pause and look at how I approach my family time, work time, personal time, spritual time, etc.

The format makes this an easy read with each chapter ending in a reflective prayer. Another great aspect of the book is the suggested reading section that includes web-sites to visit.

This book is a must read for anyone serious about living a simplier spirit filled life.

I'm new to Benedictine spirituality but am learning to value the simple things. I thought that made this book a good place to start my Benedictine journey. The book challenged my long-held ideas about spirituality and the nature of the universe and I came away feeling good about myself believing that maybe the universe is a good place after all. It helped me. I think that's what I really needed from a book rather than advice on Benedictine spirituality although I'm confident that is also a strength for this book. We all want balance and this really does help.

Of the reviewers posted here, I think I am probably the only one who read Radical Hospitality, the other book by these authors, before reading Benedict's Way. I like Radical Hospitality better if only because it spoke to me about how I need to make some changes in my life. Benedict's Way is a great book for anyone who wants to go a little deeper into benedictine spirituality but isn't much into serious scholarship. My brother is a Benedictine monk and he showed me a review of the book that came out recently. It talked about how this book is written in a simple and direct style but there is an evident scholarship lurking in the backgrounds of the authors. They just don't seem to be showy about it. Which is very good news for the reader who wants depth without pretentiousness. Even if you do read Radical Hospitality first, you'll love this book.

Many today are discovering the "The Rule of St. Benedict" as a buried treasure, offering wise guidance for non-monastics in the pursuit of spiritual maturity in "the family cloister". Collins Pratt & Homan not only give us the treasure map, but help us dig up the treasure and catalog the wealth of wisdom we've discovered from Benedict. They take us one step further, offering practical insights for daily practice of the spiritual life, personalizing the insights gained from Benedict's "Rule". For another similar book, this one specifically written for parents, take a look into "The Family Cloister: Benedictine Wisdom for the Home", by David Robinson (New York: Crossroad, May 2000).

What a legacy this woman of God left before she went home to heaven. Her life was a life of the right priorities. This anointed book will draw many people closer to God as they read the insight she shares. Reading about the testimonies of others who have overcome encourages you in your walk with the Lord Jesus.

Another theme from Holy Scripture that she emphasizes throughout the book is love, i.e., love for God and for other people. In fact, love for God will cause these other matters to fall into place appropriately. The motivation, desire, and focus will naturally flow out of a heart that loves God.

I ordered one of these books for each one of adult kids, neither of which is what would be called 'religious', but both of which appreciate this book. It quotes verses from the King James Version translation. There's quite a bit from the book of Proverbs. Everyone has things they have to deal with and work through in this live; and this is a nice, uplifting little book that could help.
I'm in agreement with some of the other reviewers that it would be good to drag out your Bible and read the verses in context. Merely picking out a verse or two from the Bible and basing your entire belief system on those really isn't going to cut it.

Recently I had the privilege of visiting with David Spangler at a conference and to experience his practice of blessing! It feels like the love of a lilting song, the light of the sun, and a clearer view of the world. In this book Spangler guides the reader with wisdom and love gained from his years of experience, expression, and expansion.

Blessing demonstrates with many examples how much difference a blessing can make. Blessings do not require physical presence; they can be received thousands of miles away. They do not require a special religious belief. A blessing from the essence self travels instantly to its destination.

In Blessing we realize that we simply cannot make this clear connection with anyone without rising into greater light ourselves. David Spangler makes it easy to connect the best and highest part of our being with that of another.

Do not be surprised if you find yourself standing in the splendor of the soul when you practice sending blessings. It is healing for everyone involved. This practice would be a great addition to the Temple of Healing in Healing Yourself with Light: How to Connect with the Angelic Healers

Whether you are giving or receiving a blessing, the joy is deep and fulfilling. I urge everyone who would like to experience greater love within and without to read this book and begin practicing the art of blessing.

When we want to help others in a gentle yet powerful way, this book makes it easy. I learned how to bless others, and also that I can bless my work, a project, a sacred space, the world, - the possibilities are endless. Yet he also explains when a blessing is not the most effective gift in certain situations. It isn't something done casually, but with intent and awareness. Giving or sharing a blessing is both simple and rewarding, especially when two people sit together and invoke a blessing. We can also offer blessings at a distance. Time and space do not affect this divine energy.

The exercises are quite useful and can be used by one person alone, two people, or even with a group. This book offers so much that can enrich our everyday life and is easy to read and understand. I felt like David was talking directly to me, and offering me a blessing also.

My suggestion: get this book to enjoy the blessings it will bring to you and your friends

I am not an avid reader of spiritual texts -- I am a RABID reader! This book is opening up undreamed of potential in my spiritual life and will be a true companion to me for years to come.

Great content but poor quality print.

This book has excellent content but poor print quality. I contacted the publisher-Riverhead/Penquin Putnam and they told me to return it to them. I received a replacement and it is no different. They wanted me to return it to Amazon but I contend that it is not Amazon's problem. It is indeed a print quality issue which should be addressed by Riverhead.

"Rainbow of Blessings"

Do you remember when you exchanged a "moment" with a stranger and saw a twinkle in their eye that shined from them so brightly that the rest of your day went so well you were "totally great"? That because the light that you saw was actually a reflection of your spirit coming back to you in joy? David Spangler shares this in this amazing treasure chest of thoughts, ideas and helpful exercises to allow us all an opportunity to become that blessing to ourselves and others,to enter that "blessing space."
On page 17 he explains that the art of blessing is the practice of being connected to each other in the most amazing way because we all have this space inside us readily available. When we discover this and "realize it" a beautiful thing happens and that gift to each other...is our "self." By accepting the love that flows through us we effortlessly receive blessings, give blessings to others and become a blessing in and of itself. I ask a blessing for the thought of a "radiance of blessings" as David Spangler shares Dr. Brugh Joy, his friend and colleagues special thought, to shower us with light and love! A blessing that will appear as a Rainbow of humanities love for its "self."

Bonshea pierces through the darkness that hides the legal system's routine abuse of mothers and children

Bonshea is a work of immense courage, a true tale of heartbreak and salvation. By exposing what was done to her by the court system, by the religious authorities and by their enabling cronies as she took the moral high ground by
leaving an abusive husband, the author gives readers the tremendous gift of her hard-won insight and spiritual awakening.

As shocking as it may be, Coral's story resonates with the truth. I hear pleas for help from protective mothers like Coral every day, week after week, year after year--all of them pleading for their very birthright, their greatest right, which is to be a mother.
She pinpoints, with heart-piercing accuracy, the historical hatred of females and of the feminine that has permeated societies, including our present one, for eons. Her personal story of living with and divorcing an abusive "religious" man who was not cheered on by the community's religious, governmental, and legal authorities mirrors the persecution of all women who, like Coral, choose to say "no" to male dominance and power. These include Middle Age "witches," midwives, mothers who protect their children from a father's abuse, mothers who dare to have careers and mothers who elect to stay home with their children. Coral also calls out for the only true cure for the dark side of human nature, and that is to live in the light.

Coral's work is a special blessing for me and for my sisters throughout this country. Not a single particle of the wisdom Coral shares misses the mark.

Enabling domestic abuse with religion and courts.

Casting religion in a negative light, can often invite a strong reaction mixed with accusations of heresy and un-Godliness. Such reactions can have a chilling effect on those who might wish to express a negative human experience, namely domestic abuse, where religion has been used as a vehicle to enable the abuse. In Bonshea, Coral Theill confronts this troublesome dynamic in an anecdotal account which underscores the degree to which religion, and the legal system, can be used to enable systematic domestic abuse. In doing so, Coral Theill has ventured into relatively uncharted territory in a manner which may well draw detractors, but at the same time offers great validation for those who find themselves entangled in an abusive relationship buttressed with religious justification. In addition to broaching this form of religious distortion, Bonshea also illustrates the degree to which the legal system can also be used as a vehicle to further perpetuate abuse even after the victim has chosen to take a stand against the abuse. In Bonshea, Coral Theill has clearly chosen to take a courageous stand. It is a stand that comes with a cost, but whose dividends are measured in the strength of the soul.

...And the truth shall set her free...
Bonshea: Making Light of the Dark, is a most incredible description of an abused victim's life. Evil is out there seeking to conquer and destroy all those with which it comes in contact. We must stand on the truth and not give in to fear. The injustices that Mr. Warner inflicted not only on Coral, but her children as well, are not of God. The creator of Heaven and Earth did not intend for others to be maimed physically, emotionally, or spiritually in His name. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar. It must be difficult for those who have not experienced abuse to relate or understand those who have. But it doesn't make it any less real. The affects of abuse can be long lasting, and if the victim doesn't honestly seek healing, the crippling will continue on for life. I am praying that the truth will set Coral free indeed.

Great results immediately, but a lifetime to enhance them

What a terrific book! Despite the fact that it's an exercise book, it is extremely engaging, and the concepts easy to follow. The challenge is to have the patience to read the book through completely so that you understand fully what Breathwalk is all about, before trying it out haphazardly.

One reviewer felt the book was disorganized, and there should have been a brief overview chapter so the reader could quickly dive into Breathwalking.

My good judgment tells me that the presentation of the material was quite deliberately thought through so that the reader would have a firm foundation of what to do before striking out. A Breathwalk - though its basic components are as simple as breathing and walking - requires a certain level of precision and, as importantly, consciousness of what you're doing at any given moment, so just getting a vague idea of it wouldn't be useful at all.

I see a close similarity, in that respect, to yoga. Carefully learn and consciously practice a few yoga basics and you'll immediately feel some rewards (just like learning one Breathwalk program). But you can very satisfactorily spend a whole lifetime enhancing your practice of yoga (or Breathwalk) and, in turn, continuously reap more and more benefits.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an exercise program that addresses physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, is easy to do but provides you with lots of opportunity for real mastery.

We were so fortunate to have Gurucharan come to San Antonio and personally explain Breathwalk and then lead us on a Breathwalk. He is the most charismatic speaker I've ever met and his lecture was the clearest and most inspiring. All during our breathwalk we could hear Wow! This is incredible! It is so easy that anyone can do it but so effective it is truly amazing. A lot of us were so delighted by the results that we decided to sign up for teacher training. The book has many more walks than we had time for, all carefully explained. There are some free exercises on the web site Breathwalk.com

A life changing walk

I bought the book because it incorporated elements from two of my favorite exercises, yoga and walking. After reading the book front to back, I took a walk. I was amazed. It opens your senses, quiets your mind and changes your mood in a quick 15-30 minutes. It's something you can do anywhere(your neighborhood, parks, malls, airports, work and even on a treadmill), no special clothes or equipment required, and it's soooo easy! Read the book, get your friends to get one and read it too, then go for a walk together.

Great technique but could be better organized

Breathwalk is a simple and powerful idea but this book makes it needlessly complicated which is why I can only give it four stars. However, the book IS well researched and well written, and so I do recommend it as long as you know in advance that you'll have to do some work to dig all the bits of information from many different chapters.

With this type of book the reader will often want to get started quickly and can usually expect to find one chapter that helps them do that by presenting the basics. That's what this book lacks. Basically, the Breathwalk technique consists of coordinating breathing with the movement of walking. But there's more to it than that and each part of the technique is presented in a different chapter, with no clear explanation of how to put it all together.

For example, there are different Breathwalk patterns to use, depending on what effect you would like to see in your body and mood. These have names like Eagle and Tiger and are basically different ratios of inhalation to exhalation, which are documented with nice graphs. Then there are awakener exercises, sort of like warmups, which are done before the walk. These too are chosen based on the effect you are looking for. Each walk ends with an integration, or innerwalk, step and here again there are different types to choose from. Then there are optional primal sound scales that you can add once you're comfortable with the basics.

After getting through all this information I was overwhelmed and would have liked to see a chapter that presented the complete walks with all their components all in one place. There is a Program Guide at the end of the book but this just adds to the confusion. It lists the individual programs based on the effect achieved, such as "Rejuvenate your energy reserves" or to go from "Simple anxiety to inner calm". But to get the details of each program you need to jump around to several chapters. Many of the programs use more than one breathing pattern, and to find those patterns you go to one chapter; for the awakener exercises, you go to another chapter; and for the innerwalk yet another chapter.

If you want to find a basic breathwalk and get outside for a sample walk in short order, then I must say good luck. But if you're willing to hang in there, read the entire book, and figure out where all the pieces of the technique are explained, then I think you'll find that the book does ultimately deliver and Breathwalk does work. If only it had a more user-friendly structure this would be a five-star book.

I agree completely with anitareads' review. The material is excellent but it does require some effort to put all the pieces together. Still, it's the only book of its kind that I know of and what it teaches is priceless.
