A fresh look at God....Review Date: 2008-05-13
In a word ... "HONESTY."Review Date: 2008-05-09
A couple of chapters have really stood out to me. The first being the chapter on what a quiet time is. I could not agree more of her assessment of how we have some how determined that regardless of how a person may be living and treating others, as long, as he or she is having a quiet time --- we deem their lives as being spiritually healthy. When in reality love is the true measurement. The other chapter that really stood out for me was the one on Normal everyday life. It really speaks to the importance of broadening our understanding of how God desires to connect in our day-to-day occurrences.
The book also sheds light on an important aspect of spiritual life that is regularly overlooked. Often times the conventional way of doing spiritual life is seen from a male perspective. Meaning, if we hear a message on solitude and/or extended time of prayer - we can take action on it by scheduling in those kinds of times. For a woman that is not always the case, especially when they have children in their early years. My wife is currently in this life stage and I have seen how through the course of her day she has had to find ways to connect with God outside of conventional means. Nancy does a great job of speaking into this.
I have heard Nancy speak on several occasions and you can hear her voice through these pages. In addition , for years I have benefited from Nancy's leadership from afar and I am thrilled that she has put some of her thoughts and musings into print so many others can benefit.
It is a very refreshing and insightful book. I hope you will be prodded to read it.

A great read, but also a bit frustratingReview Date: 2008-04-13
Although I enjoyed the book, I found the first chapter, "The Problem With Quiet Time," to be very frustrating. Now, I in no way disagree with the concept of our meeting God in each and every one of our daily experiences. But, is that a replacement for quiet time? Do we ever outgrow the need for a daily encounter with the Word? This book soars not in the places where Mrs. Ortberg relates her daily experiences of God, but, rather, in the places where she filters her daily experiences through the lens of Scripture. And, she is only able to do that filtering because the Word has been written on her heart during years of daily quiet times. Evangelical and contemplative spiritualities should be viewed as "both/and" not "either/or." As an evangelical, I have much to learn from contemplatives about experiencing God in the midst of daily life. But, contemplatives have much to learn from the evangelical tradition about how to ground the interpretation of those experiences - and, hence, the knowing of God - in the Word. In this book, Mrs. Ortberg shows us how to do this by example. I wish she had been less apologetic about her evangelical background, because that background is critical to the book's success.

Each book of the Bible becomes crystal clear. I also recommend Walking The Bible (yes literally walking thru the Bible lands) by Bruce Feiler.
Meet The Bible is a devotional book, yet it is immediately so instructive you will, as I did during a recent illness, just keep reading thru to the finish. I am buying several to share with family and friends. What a masterpiece, in my opinion.
I read the paperback edition, wished it were a leatherbound edition, and appreciated every one of the 686 pages, however, the last few books of the New Testament were shorter, especially Revelation, almost as if the writers were hurrying along. I wanted to read and learn more! There is nothing dull about the Bible now; after you read this book, or read it along with a book of the Bible, you will obtain a completely different perspective as you contemplate the "whole picture"!
I loved every moment reading this book and gaining knowledge of human nature as pictured in the book of books, the Holy Bible.

While one may get the feeling from Underhill's works that self deprivation is a key to enlightenment, it should be remembered when reading such potent material that spiritual development is an evolution of values, that we move into each new phase when we are clear that our current values no longer serve our forward movement.
I particularly appreciate Underhill's superb command of the English language in choosing words that convey abstractions that could easily be defined merely as inexplicable feelings. She is one of those rare and gifted writers that I wish were still alive. I would love to be able to thank her personally for her monumental contribution to the world's great spiritual writings.

A Different Way of KnowingReview Date: 2006-12-04
The core here is that only Being can know Being, we behold that which we are, and we are that which we behold. There is a spark in man's soul which is Real and by its cultivation that we may know Reality. You can only behold that which you are. Only the Real can know Reality. If this resonates to you, if it sounds strangely familiar, then perhaps this work is for you.
The mystic is drawn to the path by the force of love- the overriding desire for union with the Absolute. It is by this power that he or she is drawn to transcendent reality. This love leads to the state of contemplation which is the subtle state of consciousness that allows access to another plane. It is a form of consciousness recognized by Plato and Plotinus as well as Augustine and Aquinas. It is that form of consciousness beyond the emotional, intellectual, and volitional striving of ordinary men- a different way of knowing.
The second half of the book is structured according to the pattern of awakening, purification, illumination, ecstacy and rapture, the dark night of the soul, and the unitive life. In no sense is it a "how-to" guide, but it is a most valuable validation for those who have travelled any way at all on the path. It has also been traveled by others.
I find it significant that the author ends her appendix of biographical sketches with William Blake's death in 1827. There have of course been genuine, accomplished mystics since then, but the materialist and rationalistic world is more hostile to the testimony of the true mystic than the "dark ages" ever were.
And yet Mystic Union is no less a reality- and no less obtainable by the boon of grace.
After all, it is to know God that is our ultimate and highest purpose- all else is secondary if not ultimately trivial.

An impressive reference bible with excellent readabilityReview Date: 2004-03-31
This is my second copy since I sent the first back because of excessive creasing of about 20-25 pages beginning with the psalms. This is apparently a problem at Foundation since others have made the same comments as far back as 2000.
The second bible is much better in that regard with creasing still present but to a lesser degree than the first.
The paper is very nice indeed albeit crease-prone. Nonetheless this is a quality bible which will serve me well. It reads very nicely with the single column being a perfect length for quick reading as well as more meditative reading. The type is consistently dark and sharp. Very easy on the eyes in part due to the larger font but just a tad smaller and it still would be excellent.
I think this will be one of my favorite reading bibles along with the New Jerusalem Bible.
In spite of my negative comments on the creases which I pass on to forewarn people of the possibility, this is a very high quality bible. I recommend it highly since my exchange was better than the first and Amazon's handling of the return was exemplary.
Get the UltrathinReview Date: 2003-06-17
The ultra-thin version is paragraph style, whereas the above version is verse style. Verse style is lame, with one verse per line. It's harder to read, it puts breaks in the text in artificial positions, it encourages taking verses out of context, and it puts less text on each page. Do yourself a favour, go to the...NASB web site and choose an NASB version that is in paragraph style. It's time Lockman stopped making these lame verse style bibles.

Maps are black and white but very detailed. There are no notes so your only help will be the Holy Spirit. I prefer this method of study initially, and then I resort to scholars notes and study aids. The only bible I've seen better than this one is the same bible in calfskin for about $60 more.
NASB Update Side-Column Reference; Burgundy Genuine Leather Review Date: 2007-03-10
I had an old one (1977 edition) and I was very impressed with that one from the point of view of the side column and the point 11 font.
The updated version gives a much wider margin for note taking which I love to do while updating the language order.
The stitching is of the highest quality (Smythe sewn) and all in all an excellent Bible for study with several cross references.

Wow... uh?... Yes!Review Date: 2007-08-16
I picked up Robert Godwin's book after his intriguing interview in `What is Enlightenment' magazine...
It's not an easy book to read, but this is in no way a lack in Godwin's writing style which is engaging, clear and humorous... No the difficulty comes from the depth and breadth of the subject matter...
This is an Integral approach to what is basically the spiritual, psychological and corporeal history of the Cosmos no less... Whew...
By Integral I mean that along with other modern day thinkers such as Ken Wilber, Coombes and Beck, here is an attempt to pull together what may appear to be disparate threads of varied concepts, theoretical models and even religions that have spanned myriad times and places and integrate them into a `whole'...
There is no doubt in my mind that we are in a position now to re-evaluate science, spirituality and psychology and place it into a new modern context in view of the strides we have taken all these areas ...
This doesn't mean `cherry picking' ideas and making them `fit' our modern or should I say post-modern (get with it!) world view... But along with Wilber's `Integral Spirituality' (recommended book), there can be a reframe of where we are and where we are headed in view of what has gone before and the fact is, that zeitgeist can only be observed for past events...
So exploring the past, as Godwin does, from the perspective of all we know right now gives new `juice' to religion for example...
There are some books that you really should read, and this is one of them - and I am amazed that something so profound can be so much fun - this is one of the real strengths of the book... It is an emotional and intellectual roller coaster in places, for the reasons outlined above, but feeling your worldview change as you read is thrilling...
A tour de force...
Cosmic, Comic View of the CosmosReview Date: 2007-08-02
The author presents four books within his book. The first considers matter, the field of physics. The subject of the second book, life (the field of biology), transcends and includes the first book. The third, mind (the field of psychology) transcends and includes the first two. Finally, the fourth book, Spirit (what Godwin terms cosmotheosis) transcends and includes the first three. For readers familiar with Ken Wilber's developmental and holarchical model of the Kosmos and integral approach to knowledge, this book provides a view that is intellectually rigorous, emotionally engaging, and spiritually sensitive and aware. I come away from the book with a strong impression that Godwin is writing to my mind, my heart, and Spirit.
Godwin takes his biggest risks in the third book in building a scenario of how the opportunities and challenges of self-consciousness in early humans created considerable fear with which we must continue to contend today. It's a sobering argument.
While respectful of religious traditions, Godwin argues that they have created words and symbols that are highly "saturated" with cultural baggage, and therefore weak as effective pointers to Spirit. In the fourth book he presents an intriguing set of symbols that on the one hand are precise and clear, and on the other are quite free of content. This spiritual glossary offers an excellent reframe for fresh ways to communicate about Spirit.
Robert Godwin, if not in the Punster Hall of Fame already, definitely belongs. Throughout Godwin's writing is playful, yet his punning has behind it the serious intent of connecting the old and familiar with the growing edges of Spirit. His plentiful puns create new "wineskins" so that we may hold and share for awhile a taste of new wine. This is a book I will continue to study for some time to come.

The Potential for WholenessReview Date: 2001-02-05
Path to the soul stretches beyond the confines of a self-help book. Self help books so often tell us what we need to do to be better, to get "fixed". They imply we are bad and need to "get good". Dr. Bedi's approach assumes that the reader is good and merely struggling, seeking, to get better, to find more, to connect in even deeper ways. To connect beyond themselves to others and to the community in which they live. He emphasizes the goodness of the unique soul into which we are born and then helps the reader construct an individualized program that develops their Karmic Self to it fullest possible potential. He offers a holistiac way of being in the new millenium. I recommend it highly.
Review by Dinshah D. Gagrat, M.D.Review Date: 2001-09-20
Like almost every other American that day, I sat stunned, watching the horrifying images unfold on my TV screen. I experienced the entire gamut of emotions from anger and fear, to shocked helplessness and frustration.
As it has in the past, the book helped. I found myself wondering, however, how and why it helped and came to an obvious answer. Dr. Bedi's book is ultimately about restoring balance - the physical, psychological, and spiritual balance that is so important to help us actualize what Dr. Bedi refers to as our "Dharmic potential".
A psychopharmacologist by expertise, I often see challenging, seriously ill patients in whom I employ medications to correct imbalances of the neurochemical transmitters in their brains. At the same time, these patients rarely improve without an understanding of why they have developed these symptoms in the first place, and how imprudent or inappropriate choices have disconnected them from their ability to understand their emotions. Dr. Bedi explains in a way that is readily understandable and comprehensive, the ancient and ageless concepts of Maya, Karma, and Dharma. He explains how physical and psychological symptoms can be seen not only as symbols, but as "whispers from our souls" that actually point the way to a deeper understanding of ourselves, and ultimately, to Moksha or liberation.
What Dr. Bedi has done is unique. He has combined Jungian psychoanalytic insight with his own finely-honed clinical intuition. He has then added his own blend of Christian and Hindu spiritual wisdom to provide a truly integrated approach to treatment. He has described the seven Chakras of Kundalini Yoga and illustrated, with actual clinical vignettes, how Karmic complexes can obscure our pathway to the soul, and can be reconfigured towards Dharma.
The ultimate test of any meaningful art or science is whether it truly helps us to experience the world in a different way than we did before. In this endeavor, Dr. Bedi has succeeded admirably.
Every time I peruse those pages I look at my patients with a new insight and understanding. I also have increased understanding of my own fears, doubts, dreams and life events.
This book invites and facilitates the kind of simple but profound clarity of thought that helps us cope. It is the path to an island of peace in the turbulent, chaotic ocean of life, as we know it today.
