Hornblower leads by subtle suggestion
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-31
Lieutenant Hornblower occurs second in the series by internal chronology, though it was the seventh-written book. Unlike every other book in the series, this one is related from the point of view of Lieutenant William Bush. This alternate point of view allows Hornblower to be presented as a legitimately heroic figure, though it does deprive the reader of the internal thought process of the series' protagonist. The text provides solid background on Hornblower's early career as a lieutenant. Written as a novel, it paces well and has an authentic texture. Indeed, the small-scale combat action is so gripping that in many ways the book eclipses volumes in the series which deal with Hornblower's later career.

Plot Summary (with spoilers):
The novel takes place from May 1800 to March 1803 aboard a cruise of HMS Renown, a 74-gun frigate. The ship's captain, Sawyer, is dangerously paranoid and believes the lieutenants and warrant officers are plotting mutiny against him. To circumvent their putative desire, Sawyer panders to the crew, encouraging them to be lazy and insolent, and issues additional rations of grog. The situation becomes untenable as Renown reaches its cruising grounds near Haiti. Even so, nobody will take the decision action of attempting to remove Sawyer from command.

Fortunately, Sawyer falls down a hatchway and receives a serious injury. There is intrigue surrounding his fall, but no actual witnesses to the accident. Upon Sawyer's physical recovery it is evident his mind is gone--he sobs hysterically and cringes away from everyone. Buckland, the senior lieutenant, takes ostensible command. The unimaginative Buckland botches the ship's primary mission, but disaster is averted when Hornblower proposes an audacious recovery.

From that point forward, it is Hornblower who guides the ship as he influences Buckland subtly but correctly. Indeed, the theme of Hornblower leading his superior officers is a dominant thread in the narrative. The ship carries out other duties with great success until Hornblower is placed aboard a prize--whereupon Renown is almost seized by prisoners. Hornblower once again comes to the rescue and recaptures the ship. The novel ends with Hornblower losing his job because of the Peace of Amiens. He takes up lodging in a public house, makes a meager living by playing whist, develops his friendship with Bush, and meets the young Marie Mason.

This is the sixth Hornblower book I've read, although it's only the second in terms of the chronology of Hornblower's naval career. And I must say, it's one of the better books. CS Forester could be a compelling writer, but some of the Hornblower novels feel a little disjointed. Not this one.

Lieutenant Hornblower is written from the point of view of Lieutenant Bush, whom Hornblower meets in this book. The result is that Hornblower is a more interesting character. It also, unlike some of the other books in the series, primarily covers a single plotline dealing with Hornblower's last mission as a lieutenant, so it hangs together very well. The result is a book that I had trouble putting down until I had read the whole thing. I wholeheartedly recommend this installment of the Hornblower series.

Forester's key book on the times...the made-for-tv series episode parallels this book very closely. And I am very picky when it comes to sea books. Definitely at the same level as the Bolitho series!

This is arguably the best book as "literary work" in the "Hornblower" series (although my personal favorite is the collection of short stories called "Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies.") This story has two aspects that make it unique:

1) it is told from the viewpoint of Hornblower's comrade Bush (who is senior to Hornblower) and provides a completely different view of Forester's diffident hero.

2) It shows how Hornblower functions and succeeds as subordinate while working through some thorny ethical dilemmas that stump Bush and the rest of the characters.

The story line is terrific, as always, with dramatic action "drawn from the files" of the Napoleonic Naval Gazette providing the backdrop to life at sea.

Like Forester's other books, this can be read by adults but it is for young male teens, and suitable for even younger ages. If you like Hornblower, and want a similar story by the same author, read the stand alone novel "The Captain from Connecticutt" which looks at the naval war of 1812 from the American point of view and, as a book, is better than most of the Hornblower series.

A great Historical naval story

C.S. Forester created a superb naval drama that gave me an inside look at the life of a sailor serving in the Royal Navy on the wooden war ship Renown. With Hornblower, and his companion Bush dealing with their befuddled Captain and fighting off the attacks by the Spanish this book kept me reading page after page. I believe this is one of the best books in the Hornblower series and I would encourage anyone with an eye for historical novels to check this series out.

i generally read up on feng shui right before i move into a new place so i can figure out where to put my furniture and other belongings for the best flow of chi. i borrowed this book from the library and i love it! i definitely want to buy it and keep it for future reference.

it's written in a way that clearly explains why you want to do certain things. it also explains that the basic principles of feng shui just make sense - clearing clutter and keeping only the things that you love and that bring a smile to your face aren't just mystical chinese practices, they are beneficial to many areas of your life, even if you don't believe in feng shui.

it comes with gorgeous pictures of different rooms that exhibit proper feng shui. it always helps to see this stuff in real life situations.

but it also goes beyond just your home and office - it also explains how to, as the book is called, feng shui your life. i really feel that if i put into practice some of the suggestions put forth in this book, i will feel a lot healthier and happier.

i would definitely recommend it!

Purchased this book for a daughter who is getting ready to redecorate. She is planning on going with oriental/contemporay and thought she might like this book. When I got it in I browsed then read. I just loved it. Very well written, the author explains theory, practicality and organizational attributes of Feng Shui. Not just for oriental decorating style. I applied the principals to my work space at the office and was amazed. It made a very organized peaceful environment. Would definitly recommend to anyone whether your re-decorating, re organizeing or just shoving some furniture around.

My sister-in-law shared this book with us because she had never had one so tuned in to her daily life. This book has an annointing on it. Each day my husband and I look forward to reading it together and we are still astounded how the reading is completely in sync with the events of our day.

In the introduction of the book, Sarah Young explains how she waited for the words during her listening time with the Lord. Thank you Sarah for listening and transcribing.

It is so true what the writer of the other reviews said about how this book oozes, but i be puzzled that a publishe writer in London say the book is "highly unique" because good writers no that it is not logical to put a modifier before "unique" but i won't worry too much. and yet why does every review say "beautiful"? couldn't the writer of the reviews find another word to make the reviews sound different, especially when they all have sloppy grammar and typos and stuff like "planet's" when the reference is to people. Its all like the same ateth grader wrote each review but i don't care because the book really does ooze.

I read his other book: Way of the Peaceful Warrior and really enjoyed it. It doesn't seem like this Socrates can be the same person? Oh well. I'll keep listening.

All in all, I think Dan is a good author.

In this novel, Socrates, the mysterious guru figure from "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior" is revealed. The story of his life is an inspiring
saga of the triumph of the spirit. As the ptotagonist struggles against
almost impossible odds to avenge a hideous crime, we see him learn and
grow into the master martial artist that we first encountered in "Way of the Peaceful Warrior." History, martial arts, mysticism, all wrapped
in a wonderful tale of adventure, this book has it all.

I have not heard of Dan Millman so when a library patron told me that this was a great book, my curiousity was piqued and naturally, I had to check it out to see if it was as good as he said it was. It was very good and very well-written. It is a mystical reading and since I love anything Russian, this satisfied my thirst.

Why a four star? I found it predictable in places. I like to be surprised. I wasn't. But it is still a superb piece of writing though. If you study martial arts and the concepts behind them, you might find this interesting. My husband, if he has extra time on his hands, would absolutely love to read this book. He did study martial arts at one time. And it's not as drab as all that. Socrates meets enemies and friends alike on his journey through life. He was orphaned at an early age, sent to live at the Cossacks training school with his uncle. He saves an older cadet's life and realizes that it was a mistake to do so. He runs away. He meets the love of his life in St. Petersburg and tragically, she was taken away from him. Socrates spends the next ten to fifteen years training to take his revenge on her murderers, only to discover redemption.

It is, like I said, a beautifully written story. I have never heard of Dan Millman nor would I have been interested in reading his books, if it wasn't for a library patron. I plan to read "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" soon.

I had never heard of Cheryl Kaye Tardif until the power of the internet and myspace.com brought us together. When I read about her book, "Whale Song" I knew I had to read it.

I am a librarian in a small public library so I thought there would be no problem finding her book. No one in our system had a copy so I purchased one for our location, of course reading it first before putting it into circulation. I am so glad I did.

This is a wonderful story of a young girl who faces a life-altering tragedy in her life and with the love and caring of a sacrificing father, the support of a good friend and her Native American family, comes to terms with an act of compassion and love for a parent.

May we all find comfort in the songs of the whales and in the spirits of our loved ones.

This is a story of life, love and loss. Taking us back to the fun and carefree days of childhood when we were naïve about life and reminding us how soon those days are gone. This lucid and touching novel makes us realize that doing what is right, regardless of the consequences, is the greatest sacrifice of all. Cheryl Kaye Tardif's unadorned yet expressive dialogs makes us feel like a participant of the story and not merely an onlooker. It shows that our beliefs can sustain us when we need it most. This is definitely a book for readers of all ages.

An engrossing, powerful story

Review Date: 2008-03-18
Only child, star in her parent's crown, Sarah's fairytale life takes a startling and sad turn. The Whale Song is beautifully written, and though not an action novel, it is a page turner. The novel is emotionally evocative (I shed tears for Sarah and her companions) but there are many, many heartwarming and encouraging aspects. You quickly become embroiled in the narrator's life, and Sarah's voice is so strong you could believe you are reading a true story. The characters are convincing, engaging and memorable. I found myself thinking about the novel and its "lessons" while driving to work, often in fact. The Native American mysticism was particularly well done and interesting.

The story begins when 11-year-old Sarah, her mother and father move from Montana to Vancouver--from the mountains to the sea. Her father is a marine biologist, her mother an artist. Sarah is devastated by the move but soon makes friends with a Native American girl named Goldie and is accepted by Goldie's family and her wise woman grandmother Nana but at school another Native American student teaches Sarah about discrimination and cruelty.

The Whale Song follows Sarah as she matures--her tragedies and triumphs--to a satisfying end.

Mystical Journey

Review Date: 2008-03-03
I haven't read a young adult novel since my son was in Middle School and quite honestly I didn't even realize that Cheryl Kaye Tardif's story of a young girl living in Vancouver with her artist mother and marine biologist father fell into this category until I was half way through it and checked out the author's item page on this website. After all Harper Lee's masterpiece "To Kill a Mockingbird" uses the voice of the pre-adolescent Scout to tell her tale set in the American South in the 1960s in the same way that Tardif speaks through her main character Sarah Richardson.

Not that Tardif's novel rivals Lee's classic. That's not to say that it isn't a good coming-of-age narrative, but where Lee's portrait of Articus Finch suggests the noble hero fighting a battle larger than himself for the greater good, Tardif formulates a smaller world which centers not so much on a brave father figure but on the pain of a young girl adjusting to a new school where her race sets her apart as a social pariah. Sarah's angst increases when her beloved mother falls ill and she must come to grips with the potential loss. Whereas Lee communicates a daughter's pride in her father's courage, Tardif goes for the same feel, and if she fails it is only in achieving the overall tightness of the older story. For indeed Sarah's father commands respect too even if his issue focuses on a individual choice rather than a universal failing of society.

Bewildered by a series of events leading to a personal train wreck, Sarah wallows understandably until certain facts become clear. Utilizing a first person narrative technique, the reader experiences Sarah's initial acclimation first-hand under Tardif's very skillful voice. We enjoy her discovery of the mystical Indian legends of the whale and the wolf and await her comprehension of her specific mission.

The younger Sarah successfully emerges as a girl on the brink of her teenaged years. Tardif relays her sense of uncertainty and the ups and downs of triumphs and failures in an adept way that cements her ability to capture the sensibilities of this burgeoning adolescent with great credibility.

Driven by Tardif's strength in creating such a believable character, the story moves along with great readability. Somehow I thought it stalled a little once Sarah's greatest fear becomes actualized but perhaps this lull in the action was meant to illustrate Sarah's confusion over a situation with implications larger than the world she knows. Likewise, the endgame of this novel seems to be rushed, but this seems indigenous to young adult novels where the resolution takes place under the auspices of adulthood.

Bottom line? Cheryl Kaye Tardif writes a most satisfactory story about a young girl's coming-of-age amidst a background that is simultaneously beautiful, mystical and bittersweet. Recommended for all young adults.

A purported running dialog with the Christ figure with commentary/amplification by the author interspersed throughout the dialog. This is an extremely worthwhile read, being a "clarification" or "re-statement" of what the Christ's original doctrine was -with elucidation of that doctrine. That original doctrine dovetails nicely with expositions found in The Conversation With God series, Course in Miracles, and even the Seth material (which supporters would say should happen if all these sources are indeed different perpsectives on "truth"). There are enough additional and further clarifications in this work to make it absolutely a "must" for readers interested in this genre. The author's work "the Keys of Jeshua" is also a must read, being a "how to" put the principles into action in life to achieve a different life experience. This work belongs in one's special tomes on "truth and living".

I find this book to be packed with information on the nature of reality. Unlike my experience with many books on spirituality, I find myself returning to this book again and again. The truths that Jesus reveals in modern American English hit home whether he is explaining the nature of the heart, the physics of the universe or the ten commandments. Here is revealed both the deep love of Jesus for all people and an unflinching guide to all of life. All of this is presented free from dogma, free from religiosity, and free from condemnation.

For me, this is a book that one must keep so that it can be referred to time and again, as I simply am not spiritually advanced enough to get most of the information on a first, second and maybe even third pass. I hope to hear Glenda speak some day and I'd love to see her painting up close and personal. Buy the book and cherish it!

This is one of the most life transforming books that I have ever read! If you read it and soak it all in, make it yours, it will bring out the very best in you that God intended. It is freeing and releasing and prophetically sound. I love reading a book that doesn't just teach but has a way of "making it yours" by helping you APPLY what it is trying to convey. Chris has done an excellent job of doing that and is an excellent communicator. He shares many examples from his own life and others that help you understand what he teaches. You are investing in a blessing to change your life, your family's life, and all whom you come into contact with if you partake of the richness of this book. I recommend it 100%.

Save yourself some postage and order more than one because you will want to share it with others so they will be blessed and on the same page as you are. Chris, thank you for your willingness to be a blessing to others and share your life with us. I will say about the book like Chris always says, "Now that was a GOOD WORD." :-)

Kris Vallotton and Bill Johnson have shared something here that has the potential to cause a shift amongst Christians that will catapult us into a whole new realm of living as sons and daughters of the God who created everything. I feel that I have cheated myself out of an inheritance over the past twenty years that i have been a Christian as have most believers i have spoken to. The devil will be really miffed at the contents and the truth that Kris shares as he transitions us to life living in the Palace. Kris's writing style is very engaging his personal snippets from his own testimony give us a wonderful insight into this man of God. As a prophet I believe what Kris has shared in this book is revelation from God to bring the us into the fullness he has for us. We have just brought a stack of these books to give away to some of friends.

I have read a multitude of books, both christian and seculare, and this one has changed my life more than any other (outside the bible). As I read I began to see myself and those around me very differently. It encouraged me, and gave me tools for advancing my walk with God in the natural. It, unlike many other books, equipped the reader with the knowledge of a supernatural way of thinking instead of a superspiritual. I would recommend this book to everyone everywhere, and in fact I have to the best of my ability. I think it should be translated into multiple languages and sent around the world.

I have found the insight and information contained in this book tremendously valuable in learning and gaining a little understanding into the Torah. Each year as I go through it I glean a little more knowledge. So much stuff, I will be learning from it as long as I read it.

I wish I had purchased this product months ago also. Very easy reading the notes are very informative. They give understanding as to what was meant and being said. If any student of the Bible wants to truly understand what God was saying and is saying to us then they need to add this product to their library along with other Jewish books. The good news is truly of the Jew. Very much worth the money.

This is a must for any Jewish home. Almost every Orthodox Shul (excluding the Chasidishe Shuls in Brooklyn and Kiryas Yoel) in America has numerous copies for the Torah readings. This Chumash is also a required purchase for any potential convert (the vast majority of Orthodox Rabbis require this for conversion).

Rachel Naomi Remen believes in the healing power of stories. She trained as a pediatrician and expected to practice traditional medicine much as her father and other male members of her family had done before her, but something happened to change her carefully planned course.

In the introduction to Kitchen Table Wisdom, Remen tells how her male colleagues frequently knocked on her office door to ask for her help with a crying patient. They believed that she, as a woman, would know what to do. Though she knew no more than they, she felt flattered that they came to her and felt that this helped her be more a part of their exclusive "Old Boys Network." She began to spend more and more time listening to patients share their fears and feelings of living with a terminal disease.

Since the age of fifteen, Remen has suffered from Crohn's disease. As she listened to her patients, she began to feel less lonely and isolated. Probably, her guidance and uncanny understanding of her patients stemmed from her familiarity with physical and emotional pain.

Kitchen Table Wisdom is a compilation of eighty-eight poignant stories that Remen heard over many years, as well as stories of her own life. Her stories demonstrate her belief that a larger process is at work in all our lives and that human beings are "unfinished, a work in progress." She believes we come into the world whole but lose faith in our wholeness and become discouraged by feelings of not being pretty enough, smart enough, etc. " ... our wholeness exists in us now," she writes, "Trapped though it may be, it can be called upon for guidance, direction and most fundamentally, comfort."

No retelling of Remen's stories can do them justice. One of my favorites is "The Question"--a story told by a patient named Tim (now a cardiologist) of his experience at the age of fifteen with his father, who was in the last stages of Alzheimer¹s disease. At the time, his father had not spoken for ten years and was totally helpless. Tim and his brother were alone with their father when he suddenly slumped over and fell to the floor. The brother was calling 911 when both boys heard a voice commanding, "Don't call 911, son. Tell your mother that I love her. Tell her that I am all right." With those words, the man died. An autopsy later revealed that Tim's father's brain had been entirely destroyed by the disease. Tim never stops wondering who spoke those final words. He tells Dr. Remen, "Much of life can never be explained but only witnessed."

The author believes that talking about and sharing one¹s feelings revives memories that can lead to important new insights about one¹s life, bringing about a healing that formal treatment is unable to offer. She says that Shamans believe illness is a direct indication of soul loss. The soul, she explains, is that which is aware of the sacredness we carry and the sacredness that exists in the external world as well. Losing our appreciation for our sacredness, living with sadness, with feelings of unworthiness can manifest illness.

"Life is the ultimate teacher...," she writes. "It is through experience, and not scientific knowledge or expert academic training alone that we learn our deepest lessons." In her lectures and writings, Dr. Remen likes to tell of a sign on the wall of a room in Florida where the elderly come to play Bingo. It reads, "You Have to Be Present to Win." And so it is in life.

...from a very wise doctor. Gathering readers around her kitchen table, Dr. Remen takes an indirect but inspiring approach to those of us who sometimes prefer to avoid the doctor's office.

A truly healing book.

For years I refused to read this book after a friend's recommendation thinking that it would be another "feel good" attempt . Boy was I wrong! This book is one of the most extraordinary pieces of writing I have ever encountered. I have read it over and over again many times (the stories are short enough that allow you to read at your own pace). It has actually become sort of a "guide to Life" for me. Furthermore, as story-telling itself goes, is simply masterful. Dr. Remen is a powerful communicator and her wisdom goes beyond "new age". It is a groundbreaking work about mystery, awe and Life with a capital "L".
