Tangilbe perspective

Review Date: 2006-09-27
At age 45, after considering I've been in the driver seat of my life for the last 14 years provided many opportunities to at the very least give up whining about my circumstances, and on the brighter side recognize my capacity to create, lovelier things. The essay's written by Steve Roberts, however, broadened my perspective even further. Distinguishing power as an ability to be resilient in the face of any eventuality opened my heart to endless possibilities. I have been most struck by the simplicity of experiencing "Love", & "Being Loving", as perhaps an ultimate goal along with listening to my heart. Moreover, owning that I am the knower in my life. With gratitude and deep appreciation I thank you Steve, for sharing your life and your wisdom. I recommend your book often usually followed with a desire to know how it was for them.

Reading this book is like spending time with a dear friend, in the truest sense of the word friend, meaning someone who brings out the best in you. I was entertained, educated and touched by all I read and experienced in reading Cool Mind, Warm Heart. Each time I set the book down I was changed, and I saw the world through fresh eyes. Whoever you are you will love it.

Voice of a Friend

Review Date: 2006-08-16
This wonderful book becomes a subtle yet pervasive presence in the reader's life. To experience life through Steve's eyes is like having a still small voice, a Howard Cosells on your shoulder whispering, "You're so much more than you think; there is so much more than you see. Look at it this way, from this angle, over here..."

Reading these candidly written stories, I am invited to consider in ever deeper ways the perspective that everything, every unexpected change offers opportunity to become more than I've considered before. One moment I am reading a story of a man's relationship with his mother who has Alzheimer's or the Swami he met at 8 or his love of wrestling Vermont stones into sculpture, and the next I am wondering why I would choose anything less than love as a response to life. It is like walking in the woods and suddenly glimpsing a grand buck through the trees: I glimpse the greatness I am capable of if I will choose it.

Cool Mind Warm Heart doesn't stay on the pages; it calls my truest self forward, and increases my confidence to be that. I invite you to enjoy the extraordinarily ordinary moments Steve celebrates in his stories.

This is one of the rare books whose stories I "watch" as my eyes move across the written words. So much more than a lovely read, Cool Mind Warm Heart is fully entertaining and compelling. My heart danced from beginning to end!

Review Date: 2006-08-07
Cool Mind Warm Heart is a grand adventure in asking the question, "Who am I committed to being beyond all else in life?" Each essay is a delicious piece of honesty and contains the purity of spirit that provides the reader an opportunity to consider life from the vantage of our greatness, not our limitations. Steve Roberts' ability to convey the simplicity of the human spirit is a breath of fresh air, especially in those moments when one feels as though they are gasping for a breath. This book will cause you to consider the vantage from which you view all life and begin to ask your own pointed and poignant questions about what motivates you to do the things you do. And above all else, this book will cause you to smile and laugh out loud!

We sometimes need a gentle reminder that there is a force working in our lives that is greater than ourselves. God is in the Kitchen is such a reminder. The simple truths found in these stories show us the extraordinary power of God and His presence in our lives. This book is truly inspirational, and I thank Dr. Seita for sharing it with us.

This is a book of great insight from one whose one history was filled with foster homes, institutions and abuse and neglect. His words of inspiration coming from where he came from are remarkable and give hope to all of us. The title story, God is in the Kitchen, is a close to proof to the existence of God as you can get. Whenever I struggle, I find hope in the idea that God is in the Kitchen conspiring to help me always.

Buy and read, maybe your life will be changed like mine was.

As the author of Finding Fish, like John, I feel tremendously blessed that after my own difficult childhood, a childhood that we both shared in the same city and in the same foster care system (perhaps even sharing the same caseworkers), that we both, given our sussecces and insights, have an obligation to share our stories and feelings so those in despair can see the hope that exists. John's book is a wonderful gift that should be read by all who want to be inspired. God really is in the kitchen.

Passing to the other side

Review Date: 2007-05-01
I came across a copy of this book a few months after my mother's passing. Although I was familiar with various perspectives on the spiritual and transpersonal aspects of dying this book was my guide to understanding some of the subtleties of her physical and mental withdrawal. It provided me with some "aha!" insights.

This insightful book about the "psycho-spiritual" aspects of dying, draws upon the perspectives of several spiritual traditions, largely eastern. I found it to be a wonderful blend of Sogyal Rinpoche and Elizabeth Kubler-Ross.

The topic does not make for easy, light, quick reading, but it is not difficult to understand if one keeps an open mind, regardless of one's faith. The material can be as fluid, thought-provoking, or as complex as a reader perceives it to be.

It ought to be required reading for any medical student and professional, as a mind-opener, much as a world-religions glass educates people about different faiths; no conversion necessary. Many thanks to Ms. Singh for her valuable work!

With profound wisdom and insight, Kathleen Dowling Singh offers a uniquely clear view of the arc of life, encouraging readers to open into the gifts of awareness made available through facing death. This book will open your eyes to truths about where we came from and where we're going, and help clarify the beauty of this journey of human existence. Her writing style is clear and incisive, as well as compassionate and poetic. I recommend this book to everyone who desires greater self-awareness and who enjoys expanding their consciousness.

I have read many books on the dying as I work with hospices and have to say, this is one of the best books I have read yet. It not only gives the experience of the person dying, but also with those surrounding and accompanying the person on this "journey".
Very complete and well written book.

Enhances understanding of the dying process from a healing perspective
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-27
Kathleen Dowling Singh presents excellent descriptions of many healings that are possible in the process of dying. While her transpersonal orientation is apparently inspired by Sufi (mystic Muslim) traditions, her writing is relevant universally. As she notes, "I am an ordinary person working with ordinary people dying ordinary deaths." ( p. 3).

Singh specifies that this book is for people who have a space of time towards the end of their life - or are close to someone in this situation - and can contemplate what lies ahead. It is not for people who are already in the process of transition. At this stage, one's business is simply to get on with what is happening, not to distance oneself from it through analyzing it.

I found Singh's discussion on qualities of the Nearing Death Experience to be helpful handles on aspects of the deathing process. These include the qualities of relaxation, withdrawal, radiance, interiority, silence, the sacred, transcendence, knowing, intensity, merging, and experienced perfection.

Taking a more structured perspective, Singh considers stages of releasing of controls over psychophysical functions (Karnofsky scale - Appendix II) and relates them to stages in the process of dying which she finds conceptually helpful, including chaos, surrender and transcendence.

Singh's discussion brings an atmosphere of peace, acceptance and healing to what is often in our society a time fraught with anxieties, fears and distress. An example of this attitude is evident in the following observation:

"The AIDS community has called its disease `Accelerated Individual Discovery of Self' and has referred to the pandemic as `enlightenment at gunpoint.' This phrase applies equally to any one of us who is dying." (p. 15)

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is involved in the dying process or just interested in understanding it in greater depth, from a healing perspective.

Jargon update for Platonists
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-04
Assuming the Platonic narrative is an important aid to those who are dying over an extended gentle period Singh incorporates much of the vocabulary -- from pop-psychology and philosophy -- to build a coherent picture that must certainly soothe us as we die. Here, at the point where Aristotle would challenge us to recognize our soul ends with the body and accept that our soul was past tense -- a narrative sure to depress those who enjoyed life and wish for eternity -- reiterating the Platonic narrative using current idioms is a great service to our dying process. The reassurance that this interpretation of the narrative is persuasive depends on accepting Singh's expereinces which we cannot duplicate. Indeed, those who have had such experience, being present at many deaths, have told me they did not share such experience. But it is a safe argument since we cannot test it. It is beleivable to those who wish to beleive it and that may be enough.

Novel on Law + Gospel

Powerful and extremely moving

Review Date: 2007-10-12
During the years of its reign as the Established Church of Sweden, the Evangelical Lutheran Church grew increasingly abusive, unresponsive, liberal, and divorced from the lives of the common Swedish peasants. But, during the 18th century, the Pietism movement came to Sweden, calling people to individual piety and personal holiness. The Church of Sweden reacted vigorously against the movement, resulting in split congregations, persecution, emigration, and, finally, reform.

In this wonderful book, Swedish Lutheran Bishop and author, Bo Herald Giertz (1905-98), collects three stories (really novellas) that each tells the story of a pastor, learning to properly serve God and his fellow men. They are stories of learning God's holiness, but also His love and grace.

Overall, I found this to be a powerful and extremely moving read. The power of the stories keeps you reading, wishing you could be in the very churches that you read about. Now, the author was an unabashed advocate of the Lutheran Church, and the book contains a vigorous defense of the Lutheran Church's liturgy and theology. But, it is such a powerful look at serving God and serving man that I think it is a book that Christians of all sects should read.

This is a powerful book, one that is certainly a classic of Lutheran literature, and should be considered a classic of Christian literature for all believers. I give this book my highest recommendations!

Law/Gospel distinction - the forgotten doctrine of the Reformation
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-26
This is an excellent book and much needed for evangelicals in our day. Although this is laden with some Lutheran thought that I theologically disagree with (being a Reformed Baptist), so that a small amount of discernment is required, from my point of view, the thrust of the book is about Christ alone as the sole foundation of our hope and the distinction between Law and Gospel. For one who generally does not read novels, this book is welcome both for these theological reasons and for the interest in the stories themselves. There is much comfort in this book for wounded souls and much to awaken the seasoned believer to about the nature of grace in comparison to our lowly condition.

Orthodoxy New as the Morning
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-21
This book was commended by a good friend who is also I believe one of the few remaining orthodox pastors in his church body. The treatment it provides of issues such as "simul sanctus et peccator" (at the same time saint and sinner), the long-ignored Office of the Keys ("Whatever sins you bind on earth will be bound in heaven"), Christ Only, the individual's mode of "participation" in justification, and a host of other doctrinal issues was tremendously refreshing. The Hammer is relentless, and the Gospel is sweet. The orthodox views of Christ, of Scripture, of Salvation, of Sanctification, and of Christian life are all made new as the morning. I loved it!

Touches a nerve

Bo Giertz' The Hammer of God should be read by anyone entering the pastorate. The book is divided into three novellas, each set in a different era in a particular area of Sweden. Each novella basically follows the same story: A nominally Christian pastor recently graduates from a modernist university and gets assigned, against his desires, to a country parish. He soon undergoes a kind of conversion experience as he is faced with the realities of parish life, especially with the existential questions of his parishoners, and finds that despite all his formal training, his faith is only nominal at best and he really doesn't know anything about God, until a simple parishoner witnesses the truth of the gospel to him. Newly converted and aware of his own sins, the preacher then begins to passionately preach the law of God bringing some revival to their churches, but as those revivals petter off, he is surprised to find that he is only half-converted, because he must also learn about the doctrine of justication by faith alone, which is the necessary complement to the law, and the heart of the gospel. At the same time, he discovers the richness of Lutheran orthodoxy over and against other modernist, pietistic and anabaptist movements happening around the parish.

Over all, I thought this was a really good book, and I would recommend it to anyone, even to those who are not Lutheran (I'm still a Baptist). Unfortunately, this particular edition is riddled with typos, more than I've seen in any book by a major publisher. So I can only give it 4 stars, rather than 5.

This is the most important book I've ever read. As yet it is the only book, that answers ALL important questions of life sufficiently, and I think there doesn't exist anything comparable in the whole world. I am astonished, that this book is not known more commonly. On one hand this book is dangerous, on the other hand this book can save your life. This is an impossible book to describe and not for the cynical or faint hearted. For those genuinely wanting to understand why we exist at all, what we need to do to improve ourselves spiritually and make the most of our short time on earth and what the universe holds for us beyond this paltry world, read on. The book is not a dip-in read, neither is it a comfortable one. It is a roller coaster of a ride, and within each chapter the secrets to life and the universe are revealed in a robust and stark way. The author takes no prisoners and at times is very rough on the reader, exposing our human weaknesses and defects. My warning: This book can only be read with the soul, not with the intellect. Those who castigate it and scoff at its dire warnings and predictions, have sadly missed the message and will be the poorer and more wretched for it as they rattle beyond this life into a lonely eternity.

This book reads like the deranged ramblings of a man who has lost touch with reality. Almost none of it is comprehensible as it meanders from spritual sounding words to vaguely new-age concepts and then back again without ever landing in a concrete place. The "essay" on Chastity is almost hilarious in its lack of content.

Why would Oskar Ernst Bernhardt (1875-1941), a german spiritualist, use a pen name like Abd-Ru-Shin? He is preying on the gullible post-Christian Europeans and North Americans now too "advanced" and "enlightened" for the church they grew with who are fascinated by the orientalist-sounding mysticism of this claptrap. Try to see past all the sycophants on this page and skip this purchase.

A Remarkable Autobiography, Warm, Sincere and Strange

Review Date: 2008-05-13
I became of aware of Lisa Williams when she appeared on Lifetime. The concept that there is "life" or "existence" after "death" as we know it, is a hard one to grasp. Yet, after watching Lisa work on her television program, I have come to believe that there is a larger world than the concrete one we see around us. On both her television show and in her book, Lisa comes across as warm, sincere, genuine and caring. This is a very personal autobiography of a woman who in most respect is like anyone else, except she has true "psychic" abilities that enable her to communicate with the spirits of those who have passed and to at times know things about the future. Lisa chronicles how strange and "witcy" her psychic abilities seemed to her as she became aware of them, and how, this "gift" came to be her life's work. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Lisa's story and connecting to her positive personality through reading her words. It still doesn't make any sense to me how she can know the things she does, but I have watched her in action, and I believe. I hope she will continue to use her insights and abilities for good purposes, and I hope she will be back on television soon.

Every Bible teacher should purchase this book. There is more than just maps and charts, such as a diagram of the tabernacle and the meaning behind each article in it and a denomination comparison and histories of the apostles and more. It is worth the price.

Ebery Christian should have this resource!

Borrowed a copy of this book and was quite impressed with the extensive amount of information contained. It is much more than just time-lines as it offers thorough Old Testament and New Testament reviews of key events and biblical doctrines. I bought several copies to hand out for Christmas gifts and one for myself.

The book is Sara, Book 1. It is just an awesome book, easy reading, and very easy to understand the teachings of Solomon. Throughout the entire book I felt like I was Sara and that the book had been written just for me. But, this book is for all of us. I recommend this book to everyone who is searching for answers about life and all the wonders and the hurts that are included in each life. This book is a beginning in understanding the "Law of Attraction" by Jerry and Esther Hicks...and, Abraham. Thank you, so much for it.

I am inspired by the Abraham teachings and wanted to share them with my child. I ordered Sara Book 1 on CD thinking my child might enjoy listening. However, the voice (Jerry Hicks) reading the story is not very engaging for my child. So, I decided to put the CDs in my car and listen while driving. WOW!!! This story takes the Abraham teachings and puts them into a parabel style story that really sinks into my mind in a way that the seminars and books don't! I have gotten a lot out of the story and just ordered Book 2 on cd!

I ordered all three of the Sara books to see what they were like and I enjoyed them more than what I expected. What great books for all ages!! They reminded me of when I was a kid and how much fun it was only I didn't have Solomon, a fine feathered friend, to teach me so many valuable life lessons.
I have read several of the Abraham-Hicks books (Law of Attraction, Ask & It Is Given, Astonishing Emotions) and enjoyed these Sara books like all the others. Thank you Abraham and Esther and Jerry Hicks!

Although I've been listening to Abraham for many years, and I thought I understood, this book written for "children/teens" has a more simple explanation. I purchased multiple copies for my great neices and when their parents (my neices) read the book first, they too better understood some concepts. They also help children understand what we call death so that it's not something to fear and that there is no such thing. I'm passing along the next books 2 & 3 also to them.
