This book is such an incredible read, and quietly motivating too.

New to meditation - this is a wonderful introduction and practice guide, one that you can explain to you friends (and they will get it, perhaps even be motivated).

Experienced - this is an amazing gift, explained so well, and to so many audiences. It will also expose you to the art and power of "passage meditation" the process of internalizing the capsules of wisdom - that we call - civilization. This is how we grow, since we are born with almost no knowledge, and there is only so much we can learn in the first 20 years. :)

Happy growing (through meditation).

I love this book and the writing style. It begins with a short intro of meditation and then goes in depth on his way of meditating on beautifuf or sacred writings. Really helped me in learning another way to meditate. Easwaran writes with much love.

A valuable and beautiful little book, filled with practical instruction, gentle good humor, and lots of personal anecdotes by a spiritual teacher from India who knew Gandhi and eventually made his way to Berkeley CA to set up a meditation center.

I have sifted through this book in the past, hitting the anecdotes out of sequence, because it's so enjoyable and readable, but this time I sat down and read the whole thing straight through with great attention. You have to like this guy; he's so unpretentious and he can really write. His own faith is Hindu, but he keeps the book free of any religious overtones so that those of any, or no, religion can benefit from its practical approach.

Easy reading

I admit it, I can't really pronounce this guy's name. The info is what matters. It's astonishing how explainable meditation can be. Mr. E does that in a style that is as accessible as it is thorough. Now the bad news: Reading is easy. Doing, on the other hand, is only as hard as you make it. Read this book, then practice it in your life. That's the only review you'll need.

The power of speaking in tongues
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-12
The first time I read this book was in 2001, and it made a tremendous inpact on me. It's about an English woman in her early twenties being called to go to Hong Kong and start working among the drug addicts in the so called "Walled City". A couple of years later she met someone telling her about the importance of speaking in tongues, and she started praying in tongues 15 minutes each day. She had been talking to people in the "Walled City" about Jesus from the time she got there, but after 6 weeks of praying in tongues each day, the people she was talking to started believing what she was saying and received Jesus. She also saw that there was no way the drug addicts were able to get off drugs, if they didn't imediately started praying in tongues. "Each had his fascinating story and all without exception came off heroin without pain and trauma." This book is not only a story about what happened to Jackie Pullinger, but also a great teaching about the power source we have on the inside of us. Before she started praying in the Spirit she said: "Lord, I don't know how to pray, or whom to pray for. Will You pray through me - and will you lead me to the people who want You?" All of us who are baptized in the Spirit and received the gift of speaking in tongues can say the same thing and then start using what He has given us. We have "dynamite" on the inside. Let it "explode" each day, and people around us will want to have what we have!

I LOVE this book so much because it is one woman's testimony of what GOD did & is doing with her-through her.
HIS HOLY WORD IS TRUE!
HE IS With Us, and just as HE did with the first Disciples of JESUS,
THE HOLY SPIRIT still works with those who preach the Gospel with signs and wonders following, confirming THE WORD.
I must confess, I don't have the book now - I gave it to my daughter.
I actually came in search for another copy for myself.
:) Well, for me until I give it away again. :)

My wife and I could not put this book down as we read it together. It is filled with excitement as the author battles against opium and drug abuse as well as every other kind of demonic evil. In every case, she wins the battle for the souls, minds, bodies and spirits of men and women in Hong Kong. There is one victory after another as men and women are set free by the power of God's Holy Spirit. We highly recommend this book for those seeking release from drugs, alcohol and demonic bondage.

Finally, a woman follows Jesus with ALL her heart. Then, she lets Him teach her how to win the desperate and depraved that she has been trying to do without the power of the Holy Spirit. She receives the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, follows advice to pray in tounges 15 minutes a day and miracles start happening. She has lived by the Lord leading her already, but now she shifts into high speed Holy Spirit action. Mostly boys and men are saved, delivered from (Satan's kindom into The Kindom of God,) are baptized (in the sea,) and are given a prayer language, usually immediately upon conversion. Then follows healing and deliverance from herion and opium addictions through prayer. She is often catnapping in buses and on ferries because she is available day and night to help these guys. She helps many women too, but it is men whom she really has an impact with.
Well, the story is so amazing everyone should read it.

As a rationalist, I read this book as a historical document. I was quite impressed. Mahendra Nath Gupta is quite amazing. It is an excellent primary source of description of life in Bengal during the ninteenth century.

A great book for spiritual seekers.

This book is highly recommended to those who are ready to renounce the world and live a life filled with God-consciousness. It encourages the reader to be steadfast in his spiritual quest and gives the reader hope and guidance in the spiritual path.

This book is based on a journal maintained by one of Ramakrishna's close disciple, M. The clarity of explanations and the allegory used by this great master to teach simple spiritual truths is indeed outstanding, to say the least. It gives the uninitiated reader a simple understanding of complex spiritual philosophy. The parables told by Ramakrishna in this book can also be compared to the usage of parables by Jesus as well.

Finally, I wish to state that this book is highly recommended to all sincere seekers of Truth, whether he/she is a Hindu, Muslim, Christian or belonging to any different sects or religious groups. This book unites ALL faiths!

Outstanding!

Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna is simply a great work. Based on a journal maintained by one of Ramakrishna's ardent disciples, this is truly a jewel. Credit must also go to Swami Nikhilananda for masterful translation. This 1000 page classic with densely packed text would have been a challenge to read if not for the wisdom and the way the wisdom is presented.

It's been so well journaled that it's like getting into a time machine and going back in time to around 1870s to Bengal and meeting spiritual giants such as Ramakrishna, Vivekananda. This book has so much reference to Narendra who went on to become Swami Vivekananda. Here we get to see how Narendra evolved and what challenges he faced.

All in all a great classic and readable anytime. Wish it was typecast in little bigger font and spaced out better.

The best spiritual book, ever.

This is truly the best spiritual book I have ever read. There is nothing that can be found in another spiritual book that is not contained in this Gospel of Ramakrishna. What a spiritual teacher he was! The insights! The clarity of explanation! I wished everyone on earth has a chance to be exposed to Ramakrishna's words. He makes the spiritual path understandable and brings it down to earth. I could go on and on saying the praises of this great being.

Great Structure and Guidance

Review Date: 2007-06-26
I absolutely love this book. It combines just the right amount of structural guidance and freedom. I love the addition of "Spiritual Readings" to complement the Scripture readings and themes.

Each week focuses on a different theme. The Scripture readings help you discover various aspects of the theme without the authors manipulating the text. The readings are associated with the theme, but are not "devotionals" on the days Scripture readings. The readings are taken from some of the best Christian writers and classics of Christian thought.

Shawchuck and Job structure the daily devotionals as follows:

Invocation (a written prayer to focus you and draw you in for the day's theme)
A Psalm (Chosen to align with the week's theme.)
Reading for Reflection (Chosen from among the best writers in Christian history)
Daily Scripture Readings (Monday-Friday with the weekends consisting of a selection from the Lectionary)
Reflection: Silent and Written (Nothing written, but this give you time to sit quietly or journal)
Prayers: For the Church, for Others, and Myself (Again, not written, but this is the time where you spend time in prayer)
Hymn (Sing or read as poetry; either way you are exposed to some of the great hymns of the church)
Benediction (Provided by the authors to bring closing).

This book has helped me on my spiritual journey. I struggle with ADD and this book provided the right amount of structure to help me stay focused and yet the freedom to experience variety.

Great variety and very nice schedule

This might be the only product on Amazon that I've ever seen with 20 5-star reviews and nothing else. I hate to be the grumpy one, but I'm just not tracking with these other reviewers. I found this to be one of the least helpful devotionals that I've ever used.

I was assigned to use this devotional for a seminary class and was fully prepared to appreciate it. I was excited about the daily Scripture readings, the collected quotations, and the weekly hymns, all tied to the same theme. This seemed like a perfect format. Unfortunately, it turned out to be dreadful.

My one primary complaint was that the Scriptures and the quotes were difficult to connect thematically. Though there was a category for each week like "Forgiveness" or "Wise Stewards," I often found myself completely perplexed as to how a particular Scripture reading was supposed to relate to that topic. I'm not suggesting that reading the Bible should be an inherently intuitive process, but if I'm going to be sent flying across the entire Bible from one day to the next, I would really prefer to understand the relationship between the passages.

I also found the "Readings for Reflection" to be a struggle. Though other reviewers raved about the authors who were represented, I found many of them to be extremely obscure (and for good reason). Many of the readings were very wooden, probably somewhat indicative of the time when they were written. I do enjoy reading the classics, but I did not find these selections to be especially enlightening and more often left me scratching my head.

Finally, I found the organization of each week to be extremely frustrating. I was constantly flipping back and forth from one page to another, and the binding of the book is so tight and its pages so narrow that it would frequently snap shut and leave me hunting to find my place. I realize that many will laugh at my focus on such minor details, but they really affect me. I'm distractible to begin with, and the last thing that I need when spending devotional time with God is one more thing to distract me. I really wished that the Scriptures and readings had been better integrated to allow for a more natural flow when using this book.

Upon rereading my critique, I probably paint myself as some sort of lazy idiot. I am not looking for a mindless devotional book. I am willing to invest in intellectual reflection when I study the Word and read what others have to say. Maybe "A Guide to Prayer" will work for other folks, but this guide left me disappointed and even frustrated. I will keep looking for a devotional guide that flows more naturally and makes more sense to me.

Perfect for All Women - A Must Read
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-18
A JEWEL IN HIS CROWN is a delightful study into a woman's life and her place in the royal court of God. Both the book and workbook provide an in-depth exploration of issues relevant to a woman's life at all stages and her relationships with all people.

Shirer points out that women are Royalty, and they need to look for their place in God's Court. As daughters of the King, women should put on their own crown and at once take upon the qualities of one in a royal court.

It is vital for women to claim their inheritance. If they don't' they block God's purpose for their life and insult Him by trying to be someone they are not.

Though the book or workbook can easily be used separately, together they provide a more complete tool.

The book(s) are filled with topics, which encourage women to be women, to glory in their likeness to God, and to embrace the fact they were specially fashioned by Him.

The book version includes in each chapter: a study, a prayer and a list of things to consider.

The Journal is unique. Chapter by chapter, it accompanies A JEWEL IN HIS CROWN perfectly. Questions, quotes and scriptures are designed to bring a woman's gem-like qualities to the surface, where they belong.

Shirer relates her own difficulties in relationships and then later, candidly shares the important lessons she learned from overcoming the trials.

Both books are rich with tools to bring all women into the glory of their womanhood.

Audience: A JEWELL IN HIS CROWN, the book and journal, is suitable for teens and young adult women. Older women will benefit as well, as the knowledge extracted from these books will teach women about their value as a woman, and prepare their spirits, mind and bodies for the man God has chosen for them. By doing so, and applying the principles in the book and journal, unmarried women can then enter into a married union with the fullness of grace God has provided, with the man God has selected to be their groom.

Either book, or both as a set, would be an appropriate gift to a young woman in her teens and can aid all women in their journey as God's woman.

Married and older women as well will enjoy the set and be able to deepen their understanding of their place in God's Kingdom, their place on the earth, and their place in other people's lives.

Let's face it most women have issues that often stem from a lack of self-esteem. In her first book, Priscilla Evans Shirer, does a wonderful job of reminding women they are "precious jewels" in the eyes of God. She shares stories of well-known Christian women as well as her own personal experiences. Priscilla's personal stories really touch you. While she is the daughter of noted author and speaker, Dr. Tony Evans, she lets the reader know she has a style of her own and she too has been where they have been.

There is no psychology mumbo-jumbo - just straight talk! At the end of each chapter, Priscilla provides questions to consider and a prayer that addresses the subject matter of that particular chapter. This is a must-read for women of all ages, whether married or single.

I am at an age to have the privilege of mentoring many young women. Almost every woman I've met has dealt with low self image (very few exceptions). Shirer's book is THE BOOK I recommend. Priscilla speaks to ALL women, not to only a select group. This book challenges women to see themselves as their heavenly Father sees them. The book offers insight, hope, challenge, and makes one rethink the lie believed about SELF. If I had the power, I'd place "A Jewel in His Crown" into the hands of every woman. It's THAT life changing!

I ordered this book again, after I read it years ago and gave it away. It was great the first and second time. Doreen is a profound spiritual teacher, clairvoyant and life educator. If the word Lightworker rings true to you, you MUST read this book. Doreen is a PHD psychologist AND a healer, intutive, so you get an overall way to heal that is loving light and soulful and practical knowledge. She talks about her history of having gifts and struggling against them and then embracing them. I have seen her numerous times and met her in Los angeles and she is the REAL DEAL. She beams an angelic quality and knowledge. I can't say enough how much her books have helped me on my path. I am a spirtual healer and psychotherapist, so I resonate with her being bold enough to speak her truth.

This book is very uplifting in a world of so much negative energy. Though the author is christian, what she has to tell the world applies to pagans also.

the explanation of the ego; how God is all about Love; how the metaphysical does have a place in religiuous belief;... all of this was so insightful.

as a prior christian, I knew that the gifts of prophesy, of dreams, of visions, of discernment all were part of the early christian church and very much a part of the OT also. But along the way, these things got dropped and overlaid by a patriarchal not a dual mother and father beliefs.

we all, no matter how we see God, what we call God, how we honor God, we all have a stake in what is to come. Love can be present without hate. Peace can be present without war. Light and shade is a natural part of this world but it does not need to be part of the emotions. God is all about love, not about which belief is right or wrong etc. God is not judgemental.

anyone who reads this book knows that we have a mission to achieve. to spread the light and the way that we will be ready for the physical and the emotional shift coming. The heaven on earth so to speak that is possible if we can only liberate away from the doubt, anger etc.

the path that the author has travelled shows how it will not be an easy path but one that you and I will be guided on if we only listen to God and the angels and nature. beautiful

from what I learned it deserves a 5 star

Is it ever a wonder that Max Lucado is truly anointed by the Lord to touch your heart? In 'No Wonder They Call Him the Savior: Chronicles from the Cross', Lucado gets to the heart of the matter. Even to his Irish friend, Ian who had been there and done that. Tired of religion and theology. When everything else seems empty. What really mattered? He wanted treasure. The answer: The Cross.

As it is written, from Paul in I Corithians, chapter 15.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures....

From the Cross comes Words spoken in the Lord's final acts. The words come from Luke, chapter 23. He spoke to all of us through time. He saw each one of us. From His suffering, His pain and His shame to our sickness, our sin and our doubt. His cry, "Father, forgive them." [Luke 23:34] was enough. To all the Bernhard Goetz's who lash out in anger for injustice. There is justice. To the criminal who died on the Cross next to the Savior there is hope. For those finding a way out there is pardon and forgiveness. To the solider or missionary who leaves loved ones behind. For Love is built NOT on passion and romance but on mission and sacrifice. That eternity is closer than any Good-bye, but in reality 'see you soon.' To all the Judith Bucknell's who cry in loneliness. He reached out from the Cross to your lonely heart. It was Jesus in his hour of abandonment, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' [Matthew 27:46]. When no one else loves you. He is going to love you. He always has. He was fulfilling prophecy. When you're tired and thrist. He knows that, too. God became flesh and dwelt with us to know everything we have ever done with compassion He carried it with Him to the Cross.

The witnesses who were there and saw the miracle of salvation. Even those who ran away. There was a great price paid. He sacrified His life. We all know what had happened that day. The message is in our tears. No education, maturity or religion can separate us from His passion. From the Cross' wisdom comes the open arms of undying Love and a place to come home to. Only that wisdom lies NOT as men sees it, but in Faith in the Power of God. The evidence in an empty tomb. So what does really matter to you? I'd say a living God in the flesh, making the most important decision in your life, to spread the news 'in an information age, NOT regeneration.' In Jesus' words, 'Will you tell them?' 'Will you tell them I came back and that I'm coming back again.' Will you?

NOTE: Contains a Study Guide at the end for each chapter for further study plus added notes. To Max, May God continually Bless you as you Bless us with your gift. In the Love of Jesus.

"Any serious study of the Christian claim is, at its essence, a study of the cross. To accept or reject Christ without careful examination of Calvary is like deciding on a car without looking at the engine."

As "pain pervades the dusty planet," we can at times wonder how our suffering can better us as human beings. We feel alone roaming down here while God seems far above, safe in his heavenly paradise.

This is where Jesus Christ appears. In his suffering, we can see God at his most human. When the consistency of life IS inconsistency, there is someone who understands.

Jesus died for people instead of taking revenge. He didn't retaliate even when he was facing death. He takes our sin on his shoulders and becomes the "death slayer."

Max Lucado is really writing to people who have broken hearts and who can find a lonely person simply by looking in the mirror. The land of promise is for those who endure the pain and suffering and are reborn.

I loved the story he tells about the puppy and how he explains guilt and forgiveness. He brings a human element to spiritual concepts. He also explains how we can't get rid of guilt ourselves, we really do need a savior.

A beautiful look at Christ, the Cross and why we need God.

Max Lucado has done a marvelous thing by blessing humanity with his portrayal of the Cross of Jesus Christ. In his own unique style of writing, the author takes you on a vivid journey of discovery as you see the Cross, and the characters who "surround" it, from a new light. Max Lucado has such a powerful ability to express himself in words. Tears filled my eyes as I was touched, transformed, and impacted by my Saviour through this book. You will be truly blessed!

"To be afraid is to have more faith in
evil than in God."
--Emmet Fox

This quote from Emmet Fox, taken out of Power through Constructive Thinking is just one small example of powerful moments of insight to be found throughout this book. Much of what Fox says back in the 1930s and 40s is echoed by today's new age teachers. Abraham-Hicks comes to mind specifically.

To me - Emmet's "Power Through Constructive Thinking" is the foundation stone of all his powerful, inspiring & motivational books.

This one outlines in detail & comprehensively the technique for turning your thought processes into power to achieve peace, prosperity, health & happiness.

The process is easy & logical as soon as you see it. He uses Bible tracts to expand his ideas & show that this is nothing new. Mental science & the power of the mind has been around & recognised for thousands of years. Some successful people take the idea for granted & may not even realise they're using this system.

Despite the books age & the period from which it came, Emmet writes clearly & with fluidity that makes you want to carry on & finish the next chapter.

If you can just hold his ideas in place, remember them (write them down if need be) & daily put them into practice, you'll see your success's grow from day to day, followed health, happiness, prosperity & peace. All of which is nothing more than we're all clambering for - isn't it?

This man is an outstanding writer. Bringing a lot of scripture into modern thought process. Although he was born in a different era a little common sense can be applied to make it up to date. I for one will try to find more of his publications as it was very enlighten and gave me workable goals for my own self motivational behavior. The theories really work as I am finding new and better avenues opening up not to mention the fact that my spirit is uplifted. Worth reading . . . why heck yea, anything that can bring you closer to what you are intended to be on this earth is worth every penny . . . but hey, it's your life. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it:)

This is an excellent book for putting meat on the bones of many of the teachings in the movie "The Secret". I am glad I read it on my journey for understanding the power I have within to create the life I want but I am also glad I had already ordered the definitive book on this path before I started reading "Secret of the Ages".

To all those who will read or have read and enjoyed this book I beg you not to stop, You are almost exactly where you want to be, the next and final step is "The Genie Within" by Harry Carpenter. I don't work for the man or his publishing company I just want to get the word out to those of us on this quest for knowledge:You're almost there, don't stop now.

I found this book very inspiring. I was most impressed that this book has been around over 50 years, and the same issues (weight, finances, health, etc.) that afflicted people half a century ago are still present today, and yet the princples in the book are still applicable in present day.

Sometimes the most simple solutions are the most effective.

Stealth Attack: Protecting Yourself Against Satan's Plan to Destroy Your Life

Fight The Good Fight

Ray Pritchard was inspired to write Stealth Attack following the events of September 11 2001, which were a clear demonstration - as if any were needed - that Satan is alive and kicking and intent on destroying us.

The struggle between the forces of good and evil is one that has been going on since the beginning of time, and Christians know that the Bible assures us that in the end, good will prevail and evil will be defeated. However, even though we already know the eventual outcome, Satan uses every dirty trick available to try and convince us otherwise. He seeks to make us doubt and to discourage and eventually destroy us.

In Stealth Attack, we are shown how Satan attacks us - and how we can fight back. Pastor Ray Pritchard draws on the Scriptures and explains how we can use the teachings found in the Bible to arm ourselves for the fight and win the war with evil.

I have read this book from cover to cover twice now and I highly recommend it for any Christian who is struggling and needs help with the constant battle with the devil. Which is probably the majority of us.

Satan will attack. It's obvious that spiritual warfare is real. We have been going through so much lately it seems that Satan is trying to attack everything from our kids to our everyday life. But, you know what? He can and will NOT win. He will be defeated, so his reign here on earth is simply - short lived!
This book is so well written (as usual from Ray Pritchard books) I urge you to read this as it will help you understand the world in which we live. It will encourage you! We cannot be afraid of what is around the corner "Live without fear!"

I spent the summer slowly digesting this book and it was well worth the time I spent reading and chewing on it. It reminds of a book I read a few years back by William Gurnall "The Christian In Complete Armour" which was written by a Puritan and is a classic on spiritual warfare. Pritchard's book is for those Christians who want to be aware of what is happening around them and how to fight (spiritually) back against the spiritual forces aligned against us. I especially loved Ray Pritchard's chapter called "Singing Your Way to Victory". Thanks Ray for helping Christians remember and use the weapons we have been given to fight the real "stealth" enemy. You will not regret the money and time spent reading this book.
