Beautifully written. As Cardinal Bernardin reflects on the last three years of his life, he shares the importance of embracing prayer, family, suffering, beauty, reconciliation, pain, and forgiveness in order to appreciate and completely enter into the fullness of peace.

For anyone who feels lost or alone in life or frustrated, angry, or scared at the thought of facing death, I recommend this book. Love and peace pour out of the pages as the author shares his life experiences, struggles, and genuine concern for others. He shared his love with countless people he encountered in his life, and his love continues to be shared after his death to any reader who has the opportunity to read this book.

The book is quite short (can easily be read in one sitting) and is incredibly focused and well organized. The book title, chapter titles, and introductory letter are handwritten by the author and really add genuineness to the book. Highly recommended.

Statement of a great man.

Joseph Cardinal Bernardin made a very large impact on the City of Chicago. A simple, humble, very human being, he was greatly loved by all Chicagoans. At the end of his life, two huge events impacted his life, being falsely charged with sexual molestation by a young man, and learning that his life was soon to end as the victim of cancer. This book is a moving, eloquent statement of how he dealt with these and how his faith in God was tested and ultimately made rock solid. It is an inspiration to all who who are faced with burdens beyond their strength.

The perfect gift

I have purchased this book several times and recommended it on numerous other occasions. I bought it first for myself, and on the other occasions for friends, family members and acquaintances who were dealing with serious illness and end of life issues. The feedback received from each recipient has been very positive. Cardinal Bernardin leads the reader through his last days of life as he deals in a very graceful and touching way with terminal cancer, life's issues and personal spirituality. It's not long until the reader feels he or she is walking the journey with a close friend. Through his experinece, Cardinal Bernardin helps the reader deal with his or her own mortality in a peaceful way. He is still ministering to us. I highly recommend this book for all those dealing with illness, family members, ministers, and healthcare professionals. Incidently, You don't have to be Catholic to fully appreciate this book.

The Gift of Peace was recommended to me by the rabbi who presided over my father's funeral, which tells you something about its universal appeal. In deceptively simple and beautiful prose, Cardinal Bernardin chronicles his last days in which he makes the most of his ministry. The Gift of Peace is a story of moral and spiritual courage from which we can all benefit.

Those of us losing our eyesight and who love to read often turn to the audiobook. It is like having a wonderful text read to us at bedtime as we listen on levels spiritual and psychological unreached by silent reading. Please notice the audiobook of this present precious text of peace is read by a Monsignor, a close coworker of this blessed Cardinal.

The false accusations of abuse made against this great American Cardinal were quickly cleared up, and this slim volume insightfully and clearly records that process and the holy process of reconciliation with his false accuser, in a lesson for us of peace and reconciliation and of forgiveness of those who most completely destroy us. The Cardinal truly lives and demonstrates for us the promise we make each time we pray the Our Father. Forgive us in the same way that we forgive those who have trespassed against us. Forgive us with the same forgiveness we show others. Just as we must do unto others what we want others to do for us, JEsus also calls us actively to forgive others in the same way we want the Father to forgive us. This saintly and courageous Cardinal Forgave the disturbed young man who falsley accused him of abuse, and this book well displays the process, that we might also learn to forgive, in the Love of God, in our interpersonal relationships and national policies.

How many times must we forgive, o Lord. Not seven but seventy times seven.

We need in our national Catholic Church this voice now more than ever. Read this book and weep and become renewed in our Gospel mission to love and to forgive and to spread the good news to the poor and liberation to the captives. Sight to the Blind. In this time of unjust war and overwhelming violence, we need to hear this book.

Yet some Catholics for political reasons continue to condemn this saintly man (while silent on Cardinal Law), eagerly assuming the accusations true, or some association with others similarly accused, in order not to hear the exhortation by this great Cardinal that the right to life does not end at birth, but at a natural and God given death. The right to life must be supported at every point in our life and in every aspect of life. This great CArdinal elaborated for our edification the seamless garment explanation of the right to life.

Womb to tomb.

Please read this book.

I must rush to Mass now, and I bring this book with me to help my confused prayer. I thank God this great and holy and courageous Cardinal left us this Gift of Peace in the weeks before his untimely death. As head of the USCCB at the time of the crafting of the prophetic letter The Challenge of Peace, his courageous voice is needed now more than ever. Yet we have this, his abiding Gift of Peace, and that strong letter for peace. Take and read.

Pray for peace. Receive this Gift of Peace.

The Zen of Catholicism, part II

This is one book which I can't find adequate words to describe. Still I would give it 10 stars if I could. Dr. Biela presents the works and thoughts of the great Catholic mystics (St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Faustina Kowalska, etc.) in language that a 21st century reader can grasp. In addition he takes key New Testament passages with Jesus' words and elaborates on them so vividly that readers can easily recognize situations in our daily lives where those words are applicable. Not a day goes by where something I have read in these books does not come to mind.

Needless to say Dr Biela's series of books has given me a radically different perspective as to what closeness to God means, and how God acts in our lives. Basically, we are nothing and God in us is and does everything. We come to this realization by removing the blinders in our lives which impede us from seeing this truth. Events which appear adverse to us can in fact be God's instrument to remove obstacles that separate us from Him. More than ever I seek to recognize how everything I do and everything that happens to me is God's action.

I could try to go on but, again, no words of mine "suffice". Read it and prepare to be overwhelmed.

When I first saw the cover of this book I had to step back and let it sink in - how was GOD in the event of the tragic 9/11? The book does not go into the events of 9/11, but the book spelled out for me how the only true reliance is GOD and everything else, everybody else, will fall short of my deepest desires for unconditional love. This book, in a very succinct way, shows the distinction between the Creator and His creatures/creations. I found it extremely inspiring and hopeful. It has really helped me to see things in a new way - even such tremendously tragic things as 9/11.

This book along with the Families of Nazareth Movement have changed my life! My life, and my spiritual journey, were at a stand still until I started reading this book, and faith sharing with the Families of Nazareth Movement. I can see that God is in everything that happens in my life, and more importantly, I regonize my sinfulness and am aware of God's abundant Mercy. This fact is so important because it keeps me from entering, or staying in despair. When things are going wrong I know that God is present in even the worst situations. If I accept the graces God can use all situations as a tool toward my sanctification. All three of the books are a must read for anyone who wants to go deeper on the journey toward union with God.

PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!

God Alone Suffices is a book that everyone longing to deepen his/her relationship with God will want to read. The author "contextualizes" the "eternal" spirituality of John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, and Therese of Lisieux, making their teachings accessible to all who live in the 21st century. Our human tendency to create "illusory reliances" (material, psychological and spiritual), the ways in which we experience their breakdown in our lives, and steps that we can take to move toward making God our sole reliance are analyzed by the author in a readable but profound manner. A radical understanding of sin which reaches to the very depths of our being is maintained throughout, even as the author successfully encourages us never to lose hope. This book is a must for everyone!!

I have a nice library of books from beginner to expert, but I use this one the most. Moura filled this book with great recipes and colourful explanations of the hows and whys of witchcraft.

It's always best to throw your own flair into the craft when working from a book, but this one is so well-written I believe a novice could feel comfortable and confident using the spells & rituals as-is.

This is definitely a book to put a hardback/protection cover on, as it is sure to be used very often. I cannot stress enough that of all the books I have, this one is used most often. People new to the craft should find it easy to follow and very useful, especially when combined with elemental magic texts. (I typically combine mine with Earth, Air, Fire & Water: More Techniques of Natural Magic by Scott Cunningham.)

I found this book to be both practical and inspiring. The journal in the back of the book gave me additional references to look up and a space to record my thoughts. This is a book that can be read by an individual or enjoyed in a group. It offers the reader something to reflect on and grow from each time you pick it up.

Stormie Omartain has long been one of my favorite authors. She shares her personal experiences with her readers. She reminds us that when God called Abram, He did not hand him a detailed map. He called Abram (Abraham) to follow. God still calls us to follow. We are to follow Him through faith. We are to live for Him day by day. He gives us strength and grace for each day and faith to face tomorrow. "Regardless of what your situation is at this moment, God has an abundance of blessings for you."
We want to see what tomorrow will bring, but that is not God's way. Stormie Omartain's style is simple and easy-to-understand. She shares her story and faith in a manner that keeps the reader reading. Each chapter contains supporting scripture and prayer. There is a Prayer and Study Guide included. Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On would make a very good group study. Ms. Omartian and I share beliefs.. As my faith has matured, I have learned to depend on God. He has never let me down. Storms of life strike all of us; if we would only turn to Him in prayer before, during, and after the storm, we would have the assurance that He is with us. Ms. Omartian is a prolific author. She sheds light on how to experience the joy of living a life walking with God. I strongly recommend Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On to all.

This book was a lifesaver for me. It put light into my dark, dim world. When I found this book, I was in a severe depression, going through a most difficult time in my life. I credit it with saving me. And I give glory to God for putting it in my hands.

No matter where you are in your life, this book will benefit you. You don't have to be as low as I was for this book to bless you. It is a must read for everyone!!

It is worth every dime that it cost and then some. Once you read it, you will want to put it next to your bible and keep it forever.

It means so much to me that I purchase it for everyone that I cross paths with, who seems to be in need of faith, love, comfort, and/or support. I use it as a way to minister to those in need.

You will LOVE it!

A revealing portrait of a great saint, this book contains the correspondence between St. Therese and her spiritual brother Maurice Belliere, a struggling young seminarian. As you read the letters you can see the growing friendship between the saint and the seminarian as they learn about each other more. Even though the letters were only intended for Maurice, we can learn deeper throught them the meaning of her " little way ". It is also amazing that despite of her own struggles with illness and the spiritual darkness she is experiencing, she is still able to uplift and encourage Maurice in his difficulties. The author also gives explanations after each letter which gives us a picture of what is happening in thier lives while they were answering the other one's letter. A book I would highly recommend especially for those interested in St. Therese and her little way.

A true love story indeed!

This book changed my life!
I never have shown much of an intrest in St. Therese. Many people are devoted, but I never understood why.

This book helped me to see why.

This book taught me how to love and taught me much about mercy and trust.

Therese, a doctor of the Catholic Church, writes beautiful letters to Maurice, at times a somewhat confused seminarian. Therese meets us at our level to show us the love of Jesus.
This book is a one that points past the works of Therese, and straight to Christ.

God is nothing but mercy and love.
Thank you for showing me St. Therese!

This is a fantastic book! I enjoyed reading it immensely, and I want to give copies away to friends. I am sad to see it is out of print. It really should be brought back. It has a powerful synthesis of the Little Way, and the correspondence with Maurice brings this out very well. It becomes a correspondence and a comparison between a saint and someone who is trying to become one. Most of us can relate well with Maurice. The way St Therese relates with him helps me see the role of the saints in our life.

Bring this book back in print!!!

A most beautiful book about Little Therese of Lisieux

if you admire and hold lots of devotion for St. Therese of Lisieux as I have for so long now- she always said she was Little Therese. However in this book the most moving charisma of her love and personality are seen in a "big" way regarding her friendship with Maurice. We see a saint so full of love and compassion for his shortcomings and never does she once in this book show anything but encouragement to Maurice. There are many lessons to be learned in reflecting on this book . One of the most significant things I feel is our should be support to our priests, bishops and clergy in the universal catholic church. As Maurice radiates in this book as an aspiring semanarian our clergy does have up's and down's also. May we all love our clergy as St. Therese did, does and symbolizes her special love for the priests, and bishops. A most marvelous book. As the late John Cardinal O'Connor said in his review to Ahern's book " We see Therese now more as a woman and we are fascinated. :)

What a wonderful book about a wonderful saint! This book, while not a difficult read, is certainly rich in emotion, beauty, and spirituality. If you have read St.Therese's "Story of a Soul", this is an excellent "second book" to read. It tells of the story of a relationship between a seminarian/priest and St.Therese in her last days. I recommend it for anyone's spiritual edification, especially Catholic Christians.

I was so thrilled when I bought this book... I have read many books on the subject of spiritual awakening and spirituality. But, for me this one is a hard read, not because of the subject. In my opinion the author seems to talk in circles at times. I have had the book for several weeks and am only in chapter 3. I don't feel as if I have gained anything from what I have read. A few times I have caught myself saying, "WHAT!?" Not that what I had read was to far fetch, more so on trying to figure out just what they were trying to say in the first place. I am hoping it gets better as I read on...

The timing is uncanny and quite comical at times. It's as if this book was written just for me - and in a more general sense, it was. When your time is right to read something like a bible or holy book for you in this time, the you too will stumble across this and feel the direct NEED to get it and savor each and every pearl of enlightenment... In his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul writes "Pray without ceasing," (1 Thes 5:17) and in his letter to the Ephesians, he writes "Pray at all times in the Spirit." (Eph 6:18) What does it mean to pray at all times without ceasing? Can it be done? These are the questions asked by the pilgrim, the main character of The Way of the Pilgrim and The Pilgrim Continues his Way, two books written in the late nineteenth century by an anonymous Russian Christian. The pilgrim character tells of his journeys through Russia as he seeks to learn to pray unceasingly.

Through the telling of his tale, the pilgrim shares much about prayer. The focus of prayer is The Jesus Prayer, and the goal for the pilgrim is to continually pray this prayer from his heart. The writer introduces lessons on prayer and the Christian life through other characters such as priests, wise teachers called "starets" and other Christian travelers who share their stories of faith. The pilgrim carries two books with him that are his sole possessions on the earth and his treasures. These are The Bible and a book of Eastern Church Fathers called The Philokalia. The narrator references both books to provide lessons on prayer.

His journey reveals what he learns about prayer. Through the book, the narrator reveals several lessons about prayer for reflection and practice. The main theme is ceaseless prayer.

An older teacher shares with the pilgrim that, as Paul writes to the Romans, "we know not what we should pray for as we ought." (Rom 8:26) The teacher advises that the perfection of prayer is not within our power, but we can pray often and always. The teacher then shares The Jesus Prayer with the pilgrim,

"The continuous interior prayer of Jesus is a constant uninterrupted calling upon the name of Jesus with the lips, in the spirit, in the heart, while forming a mental picture of His constant presence, and the imploring of His grace, during every occupation, at all times, in all places, even during sleep. The appeal is couched in these terms, `Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.'" (Pilgrim 9)

The pilgrim begins by practicing saying the above prayer thousands of times a day. With much effort and by the rejection of other thoughts and doubts, he develops the habit of saying it continually. He first says it with his lips and mind. Later in the book a teacher shares with him the expanded form of the Jesus Prayer, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."(Pilgrim 135) His teacher explains that in this form of the prayer, the entire Gospel and way to salvation is represented.

Through his interactions with others and his reading, the pilgrim continues to learn about The Jesus Prayer and its effects. He shares the following,

"What the Gospel is, that the prayer of Jesus is also, for the Divine Name of Jesus Christ holds in itself the whole gospel truth. The holy Fathers say that the prayer of Jesus is a summary of the Gospels."(Pilgrim 27)

This explains why the prayer so effective for those who pray it in combating their spiritual enemies and producing the fruits of the Spirit in their heart.

The author emphasizes that God's grace drives prayer and rewards prayer. He urges those he speaks with to make attempts at prayer and ask God to help them. He does not belittle even the feeblest attempts at prayer. For the author, every intention of ours and every movement of ours toward God are valuable to God. He summarizes his thoughts,

"The love of God gives grace a thousand fold more than human actions deserve. If you give Him the merest mite, He will pay you back with gold. If you but purpose to go to the Father, He will come out to meet you. You say but a word, short and unfeeling--`Receive me, have mercy on me'--and He falls on your neck and kisses you. That is what the love of the heavenly Father is like toward us, unworthy as we are." (Pilgrim 117)

This is an important spiritual value for the pilgrim that he tries to practice and teach. God gives us grace to come to Him, and when we come, he pours out more grace upon us.

The Way of the Pilgrim and The Pilgrim Continues His Way summarize the Bible's lesson on prayer. The author illustrates that prayer leads us to Christ and the Father and is itself inspired and initiated by the Holy Spirit within us. The author has included many scriptures about prayer. He shows systematically how the New Testament encourages prayer. He offers a lesson on how prayer empowers us to do good works, so that the term, "Pray and do and think what you will" is reasonable and sensible for the Christian who prays sincerely.

The book offers a way of life that is hidden in Christ through a continual praying from the heart to Christ. The author shows how it is possible and beneficial to pray continually as prescribed by Scripture.

This is living the pilgrim religion yesterday and today. It's the story of a Russian peasant's search for the secrets of prayer. The real die hards fast until Thanksgiving. This should be required reading for college students.

This book is worth more than 5 stars (or may be all the stars in the universe)!!

This book was recommended to me by a friend and after reading the sample pages here I felt that I had to have it. The book greatly gave strength to my faith in Christ and I know it has helped many others as well. In fact, this book, as previously mentioned, does deserve more than 5 stars. Reading it through it was like placing myself in the pilgrim's steps and traveling with him throughout the East.

Classical Analyse on Modern Witchcraft for Serious Wiccans

Madame Doreen Valiente has written an excellent Witchcraft text that has stood the sands of the hour-glass.She offers a critical review of all the major famous people associated with classical and modern witchcraft. It's omnificent story-telling without any fluffy piffling tales presented. It's serious reading for any neo-pagan,who wants to expand one's Craft knowledge. From that of a mere novice to a higher level of a trusted Occult scholar. This book has more persuasive and insightful opinions on the British Witchcraft-Gardnerian traditions and customs, than any other recent English Craftbook. So i can only recommend this classical work on historical and near present British Magick.I have the original edition, with the moon priestess, around the witching midnight hour. The newer copies offer a sky-clad witch, that may turn some serious wiccans, widdershins away from it.This book is not a 'pig in the poke',short-changing the true followers of Wicca.Read the book and judge for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Also check out www.highcrossquarter.com for current information about today's British witches & wizards.

A must read for all Witches and Wiccans!

I'm always suprised when I see really great books on the Craft have few reviews compared to a lot of the "junk food" type stuff that is constantly published today. This isn't a how to book for beginners, but a great history that's set up in a dictionary type way. There's so much info and so much to learn here. This isn't just a book for practicing Witches, but for anyone interested in witchcraft. I could see this book being a great resource for anyone doing a paper on witchcraft. It can be a little dry in some spots, but not very many!

Doreen Valiente was always interested in the truely old craft. Here she gives us interesting factiods on various topics. Most concern pre-revival traditions like the witch balls, holed stones, flying ointments and the like. Also matters of historical importance like the minibiographies of the revivalists (Garder, Crowley, etc.), laws against witchcraft and some of the more famous witch trials. Several important dieties and holidays are also covered. And of course, the witches' tools. The articles are mostly 2 - 5 pages in length, so they depth as well as breadth.

Far more than an alphabetical reference book An ABC of Witchcraft takes you in and gives even an experienced witch food for thought. I highly recommend.

Top quality reading for spiritual growth

I love this book! Stanford is master of the victorious living approach to spiritual growth. His understanding of our position in Christ based on the key New Testament passages in Romans 5-8, Col. 3, and parallels closely matches my own work on Romans in Walking in Victory: Overcoming Sin and Legalism through Your New Identity in Christ, or How to Experience Your Relationship with God as the Apostle Paul Teaches in Romans 5-8.

The green letters stress lerning to view ourselves as God views us. Until we see ourselves in Christ only, we will never be able to say with Paul, "no longer I but Christ." This book will give readers a new lease on life through a deeper understanding of grace.

The "New Creation" Christian Life

Having been a born-again "new creation" (II Cor. 5:17) in Christ for over 40 years, in addition to having done undergraduate and graduate work in Bible and theology, I can say this book by Miles Stanford is the best thing I have ever studied on the Christian life (other than Paul the Apostle himself!). Miles was a dear friend and personal mentor to me before his death in 1999. I spent my first 30 years in Covenant Theology and its "law as a rule of life" teaching which not only robbed me from true fellowship with God's Son, but almost destroyed my walk with Him altogether. God in His mercy sent Miles my way, and I have been walking with the Lord Jesus in a new and wonderful way for the passed 10 years. Be sure to understand Miles' teaching before criticizing him. Check out "withChrist.org" website for a storehouse of food for the "inner man". Miles' website is also there!
If you approach this with a prayerful spirit, you cannot help but be continually enriched through what you find in Mr. Stanford's books as well as the aforementioned website. Some of his statements may shock some Christians, but again, BE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND ALL THAT HE IS SAYING BEFORE CRITICIZING HIM UNFAIRLY. Miles is now ACTUALLY where he has always been POSITIONALLY ... "seated in the heavenlies in Christ".

A must for anyone who ever doubts their salvation.

Well worth the read. All of us at some time or other has doubts, questions and needs to be strengthened in their knowledge of the finished work of the cross. This book makes great strides in those directions.

Good book, but a little long and repetitive.

This book makes good use of scripture and presents a very Biblical message. There are a lot of great insights and this book can be a great blessing to many.

The major problem with this book is that it is really five books that have been put into one volume. This makes it longer than most modern readers are willing to read. It also gets very repetitive. By the end of the third book, I was finding very little new material. The later books just repackage the previous ones. If you have to finish books that you start (like me) then you may not want to start this book. The last half sort of drags down the greatness of the first half.

For those looking for a similiar, but more readable book, I would recommend "TrueFaced".

One of the best books I've read that describes the nature of work and the human condition. Whyte captures so beautifully the emotions I feel as an independent consultant who spent time inside some large organizations. These days I feel that need to be "part of something", and just as strongly feel the need to use my own voice and find my own way should I go back inside an organization. Whyte describes this tension of wanting to be a part and wanting to express who you are inside an organzation brilliantly. I can't imagine anyone who hasn't struggled with these fundamental questions. It was affirming to know that my conflicts with those desires are not unusual.

David's work has inspired me in very practical ways and it is truly a read for those who yearn for purpose in their lives. My constant discovery of my "firm persuasion" helps me both at work and at home and dealing with the insanity of 9/11. It is easily one of the top 50 books in my business library and I quote from it regularly when I teach managers and leaders!

I always enjoy reading Whyte's work. Few writers have equaled his command of the English language and his story-telling ability. The book evokes a great deal of empathy as many modern day workers struggle to find personal meanings to work/employment. Whyte provides a personal insight into how one may purposefully stay true to oneself. The reading is relatively lighter than most of his poetic works and is very enjoyable and thought provoking. If one doesn't like the content, he/she will at least enjoy the author's mastery in writing, especially his transitions from one point to another. Whyte is one of the few authors that can weave together difficult concepts with artistic cohesiveness and elegance. Highly recommend it.

I was "moved" and inspired by this book which was a gift from a respected Executive Coach. This books assists all that want to deepen their connection to their life's work or find out what their life's work is. The author states that far too many people trudge through a mediocre work life - scrambling through day-to-day "busyness" towards exhaustion. Rather he encourages more time for self-reflection and analysis. While many most often want to get away from work - it's where many spend the majority of their time, and it's where many spend much of it wishing they were somewhere else, doing something else. Many overlook how work can actually be our greatest opportunity for discovery and growth - and author explains how. The Chapters include the following:

1) Setting out with firm persuasion
2) A stranger at the door
3) From Powerlessness to participation
4) Ambition, Horizon and Arrival
5) A short Sea Crossing
6) From Exhaustion to Wholeheartedness
7) Arrival and Authenticity
8) When the real you wants out
9) Escaping the Prison of Time and Work
10) A voyage through the hours of the day
