What a great followup to Hazard's Price. I hope Mr. Stone continues this series, as he has suddenly become one of my favorite authors.

This is a refreshingly fast and fun read, with lots of action, twists and turns which kept me guessing. Also number of interesting surprises. The ending is a real cliffhanger (pun intended).

The ending really pleased and surprised me... I expected a treatment like an X-files episode, where the alien/psychic/mutant/whatever gets away at the end and the viewer is left somewhat unsatified since there is no "resolution"... In this book, there is a surprising and unexpected resolution at the end. What could be next! An even greater and more mysterious story has just begun...can't wait for the next book in the series!

Stone's gripping fantasy series comes to it's own in this
novel his world-building skills are impressive as he once again takes us to a world reeling from a horrible mage war and how mages created a spell to take the magic out of the world and NOW a sorcerer called Madh and the assassin, Hain seek to undue the spell!
Brandt Karrelian, the former spy turned Idustrialist is obsessed in hunting down the sadistic assasin called Hain who crippled his best friend. He is aided by childhood friend and thief called Marwick, the chaldean spy Elena Imbress and seasoned forest, Callom Pell. This novel has it all: plot twists as you see power-hungry chaldean general Amet Pale schemes to control the country.
Our heroes must battle mythical monsters, bloodthirsty cult of immortal killers.Stone's action sequences are violent and mesmerizing as you see magical battles and scenes of brutal hand to hand combat and the final confrontation between Karrelian and Hain a top of a stone Island! I look forward to reading the next book and If Robert Stone is reading this review all I got to say is: Hurry up and write the next book! :)

This book is great and should be recommended to anyone. Robert Stone strikes just the right ballance between a fast-moving plot and interesting themes to keep readers from putting the book down. You won't want to stop reading once you pick this one up!

I especially liked the shocking scenes of violence, which had me on the edge of my seat. Also, "Unbinding" is a great word play on unbending and the German-Yiddish word for "unconditional." This is a work of genius.

In this second book in the series, Mr. Stone's writing really seems to come into it's own. The entire story is a pressure cooker with just a few brief respites for the characters (and reader). I really did not expect this book to develop such a powerful feeling of being a global epic involving military coups and bids for continental mastery as a backdrop to the very personal battle that the main characters engage in. Even some truly thought provoking passages as a bonus.

Great tension between the characters, both those working with one another and those working to destroy one another. Some great new monsters have been thrown in (the druzem) along with the traditional (a manticore, for example).

But best of all was the incredible ending that left me wondering just how big the "boom" is going to be when Mr. Stone decides to blow the whole thing wide open!

A great read and more than worthy follow up to Hazard's Price.

Ever since I saw the outstanding 1996 Neil Jordan film "Michael Collins", I have been fascinated in the story of Collins and the violent early years of the IRA. This excellent pictorial history gives a brief but concise summary of his life, along with dozens of extraordinary and rare photos. From his growing up in West Cork, Ireland, to his tragic death at the age of 31, this book explains his amazing life in a simple, straightforward way that will please both experienced Irish history buffs and "rookies" who're looking for a good place to start.

What I find most tragic about Collins is that after years of fighting the British to achieve Irish independence, he was ambushed and killed by his own countrymen during the Irish Civil War of 1922. There are photos of his fiancee Kitty Kiernan, his best friend Harry Boland, and various IRA associates, and of course photos of his enemies, both Irish and British. There's a particularly chilling photo an R.I.C. Constable alongside two Auxiliaries (known for their brutal methods), all with evil grins and guns drawn. This book is an absolute must for any Irish history buff!

For anyone interested in getting to know more about Michael Collins and Ireland's finally successful struggle for freedom from Britain, this book is an excellent, easily read introduction. It depicts in words and photos a terrible and critically important period in Irish history and introduces the reader to one of the most fascinating and compelling figures in that history or any other. Highly recommended.

Everyone has heard the cliche "A picture's worth a thousand words" and Connolly proves it is true. History comes to life beautifully as the reader is enveloped in headlines, photos, drawings and letters of the time. As well as eye candy, The Illustrated Life of Michael Collins provides an accurate, easy-to-read biography and a palatable political analysis. Unlike some other historical profiles, Connolly stays away from melodrama and hero worship, telling the facts as they were and leaving the observer to make his own choices. A worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in Michael Collins and/or Irish history.

The book contains many simple exercises that clear the mind, relax the body and help create a more beautiful life.

It also has ideas that inspire peaceful thoughts:
"Why good is contagious", "There are no limits to the power of your mind" etc. And it's not religious, it's spiritual.

Robert Stone was one of the Silva Method's top trainers for decades. He was very talented at guided visualizations, and this book is packed with some of his best work. I have had this book for years and re-read it often. If you are interested in psychic and spiritual development exercises, this book will help you on your way.

This tape pack changed my life for the best. It came to me when my life was the lowest, but through the teachings and practice of the Silva Method, I took control of my mind and ultimately my life. I have now focused my life to better serving humanity. This is the message of the Silva Method. The techniques taught in these tapes are to be used in our daily lives and to give us full control of our lives and destiny.

The Silva Method is amazing. These tapes are one of several I own. I took the class about ten years ago and I have not been the same since. Admittedly, I don't always use it as I should, but when I need it, the techniques are always there. Better yet, the understanding that I have the power to get information I need beyond my normal senses is very strong and reassuring. I used the Silva method to get a large raise, build my own business, and access information through dreams. You have to try it to believe it! I would recommend the tapes to help you get acquainted with the material, then go and take the class because it is accelerated and the energy of others really helps. It's absolutely terrific.

The perfect combination of wonderful pictures and superb story-telling. After having seen and read more than 15 books of the Southwest/Glen Canyon area, this is definitely one of the best. Jack Dykinga and Charles Bowden have done a wonderful job. Also, in the end of the book the raise the very necessary topic of how to (better) preserve the Colorado Plateau.

The number of photographic works exploring the nuances of the Colorado Plateau is seemingly endless. Many can be browsed once and left behind. This book is the scintillating exception.

Jack Dykinga's photographic work is simply exceptional, and beyond the pale. Each color photograph appears as exquisitely crafted as a piece of fine crystal, beginning with very cover of the paperback edition. One can only envy his great patience and expertise in composing each work.

Much of the photography comes from the Paria Wilderness, an area of the Plateau not usually treated to any degree in most works, and the novelty is refreshing. A particularly enjoyable facet of the book is that use of a telephoto lens has been largely eschewed, leaving a series of scenes that the enterprising tourist can find and view with his or her own eyes, just as depicted by the book.

Charles Bowden's accompanying text is evocative and hearkens a wild diffusion of images and memories of the fascinating region.
It is an apt companion to Dykinga's superb work.

If you are limited to five or less books about the Colorado plateau, let this be one of them. I enjoy it more every time I read it.

In 1998 I'd seen a photo on a calendar of the Vermillion Cliffs in Utah, but had no idea where exactly it was located. I teach photography and my students and I had done some research to find it, but discovered it was a very large area. When I found Mr. Dykinga's book I was even more determined for my students to see and photograph the area. Needless to say, the book is truly inspirational thanks to Jack's remarkabe work.!
If you know a photographer or a traveller - this is the book for them! Enjoy the treat yourself as well.

A great ghost story in the classic British tradition.

First of all, I like Robert Westall's supernatural tales very much. They run the gamut from gentle to utterly chilling (this story belongs to the latter category!). Don't be misled by the fact that he's normally considered a "young adult" writer, his material is completely enjoyable to adults (I'm 44!), and I highly recommend his works.
Getting back to this one, all I can say is "WOW"! Just like a Dean Koontz novel, he hooks you on the 1st page, and things just get more bizarre from there. A wonderful ghost story, and while it's not quite in the same league as tales by M.R. James, E.F. Benson, H.R. Wakefield, Frederick Cowles, Eleanor Scott, etc., this one definitely stands on it's own. I won't say anything about the plot, as to give anything away about this excellent short (100 pages, you can and WILL read it in a single sitting!) novel would be just plain wrong. All I can say is find a copy, either for sale or in a library, and if you are a ghost story fan, you won't regret it.
One caveat, however... a lot of it is written in Northern British "slang", and it may be a bit slow going for the unitiated (me mum's English, so I grew up knowing many of the speech patterns and colloquialisms that Westall uses. This is really a "non-complaint" though, as in my opinion, it only adds to the authenticity of the tale. Read it, and be prepared to end up looking over your shoulder for a while. Superb book!!!
BTW, I also HIGHLY recommend "Antique Dust", a collection of his more "adult" ghost stories. This is probably his most consistently good book of short stories. Believe me, these books are worth the time it takes to track 'em down. Read, enjoy, and rejoice that the classic Brit ghost story is still not dead (even though, unfortunately, Westall is)!!

What a great horror story! No, it's not gross, not bloody, not overtly spooky, and the Terminator does not make an appearance, but Westall's subtle writing and build up of true horror make for a literally hair raising read. I read "Stones..." as an adult, that means I was over 30 folks, while between "real" jobs and while working at a children's bookstore. I took this with me to lunch and was glad I had my back to the wall, even at that I kept looking over my shoulder... Not for under 12, but a great scare! ...Enjoy and read read read!

...this was one of the scariest books that I read at the time. I still have the book, and have re-read it only a few years ago. The gargoyle is what scared me the most; anyone who reads this will see why I say this. This is like a combination of "The Shining" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say, read this book. It is very, very short, and one can finish it in one sitting. Don't get too scared though...

Amazing!

If someone were to ask me why I read so much fiction, I'd hand them this book. Although it is short, this book is one of the best I've ever read and re-read. From the eerie but gradually intensifying strange occurences, to the uncovering of the cathedral's secret history, to the jaw-dropping climax, this book ROCKED!

I have been to Armenia and Artsakh the past two summers and have two photo albums from the trip. If my photos were ever destroyed or lost, I wouldn't feel so bad because I could buy this beautiful book that captures the essence, spirit and beauty of the ancient land and people. Plus, except for my photos having people I know and love in them, the photos in this book are superior. In fact, they are phenomenal.

It is a must for the library of any Armenophile.

This book has sparked some incredible hiking for the dog and I. The descriptions of each hike are excellent. One awseome spot the book guided me to was Santa Paula Creek Canyon which has a beautiful stream and deep pools for swimming. Pointers are provided for finding trail heads. If you are going to venture out into the Sespe/Los Padres Wilderness, however, I reccomend buying a good topographic trail map. This is primarily an "idea" book.

I bought the last edition of The Essential Theatre (7th) for a class. It was easy to read and covered just about everything one could hope for in an introductory text. Now I'm a graduate student studying theatre. I bought the new edition to review the material I had a few years ago and was surprised to find a number of exciting new features including greater use of the internet to expand on subjects covered in the text. This book was very good before but with so many new features and the same authoritative coverage it's a pure joy and "essential" reading for anyone who truly cares about the Theatre.

If you have a Theater degree from any American college in the last decade, then you already own this book. This is the definitive text on Theater History. Brockett is the authority. No other comprehensive book on "general" theater history comes close. If you want the book that is on every theater historian's shelf, referenced in every Theater thesis or dissertation, and the text for every Theater History course in the nation, then order this.
