If you just want to read "Dracula" to know the story, then any paperback edition is fine. But if you want to fully appreciate the depth and scope of Bram Stoker's creation then you simply MUST have this book. It will give you a guided tour through all dark hooks and crannies of the novel and you'll understand why it turned out to be the everlasting book its humble beginnings would not seem to allow.
It is easy to read, serious and tremendously enjoyable.

I remember finding this book in my mom's collection back when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old, and it's probably the reason I became a horror reader. The stories are all well-known classics (The Monkey's Paw being my favorite of the bunch), but it's the artwork that makes this a must-have. Each story is beautifully/grossly illustrated, and if they wouldnt scare guests, I'd frame the pages themselves! (Ya I'm sick!) If you can find it, get it!

Why do I like this so much? Maybe because it is a classic? Hard to say why, just really enjoy how that is done, the cast of hunters, etc. It is the one I have multiple versions of, including a hardback annotated, so that certainly says something. The style, told in letters and journals to large degree just seems to work for some reason, when it can be horrible elsewhere. Highly recommended.

Apart from that, the Essential Dracula has annotations and notes for each page, which are quite interesting. If you just want to concentrate on the novel, you may find this setup distracting, so try a plain version just for that.
Tells how about a Dracula walking tour in London, and other fun things.

A worthy volume of illustrated adaptations
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-06
"Graphic Classics: Bram Stoker" serves up an excellent collection of illustrated stories by horror Grandmaster Bram Stoker. Each tale is either fully illustrated, comic book style, or text and page combined. All of the illustrations are in black and white, and feature a wide variety of styles and flair. This is definitely not the typical art you would find in a DC or Marvel comic, but is much more "arty."

There is plenty of "Dracula," Stoker's number one claim to fame, but there is also enough of his other works to let us know that he wrote more than one novel. This is the second edition of "Graphic Classics: Bram Stoker", with some favorites returning from the first edition, along with some excellent new adaptations.

The stories include:

"Dracula" - Stoker's most famous story, illustrated by Joe Ollmann in a slightly cartoony but appropriately Gothic style. The adaptation is and the style of the book is kept intact, including the letters and paper clippings that drive the plot forward. A nice showpiece for this new edition.

"Vampire's Hunter Guide" is a combination of Van Helsing's text from "Dracula", combined with semi-humorous drawings by Hunt Emerson.

"The Judge's House" is a EC comics -style adaptation (Vault of Horror, Tales From the Crypt, etc...) of a haunted house story. Beware the Judge!

"The Bridal of Death" is adapted from "The Jewel of Seven Stars." A mummy tale, it is rendered in the unique style of J.B. Bonivert who also adapted the Sax Rohmer mummy tale "In the Valley of the Sorceress" for Graphic Classics vol. 12, "Adventure Classics".

"Torture Tower" shows the danger of being a loud-mouthed American tourist in Nuremberg. Wonderfully adapted by Onsmith Jeremi, it is done in an "underground comics" -style, with nervous energy that suits the gruesome tale of comeuppance.

"The Wondrous Child" is illustrated text, with a flight of fancy and a trip to fairy land. The master of horror could put out something sweet from time to time as well.

"Lair of the White Worm" is a great tale of jolly, haunted England and the monsters that haunt its green and pleasant land. Bizarre and sensual, the Lady Arabella is a classic Gothic villainess, with her secret rituals and lust for blood. Illustrated in comic book style, with a Victorian flair in style, by Rico Schacherl.

CHRIS BERNAU PLAYS COUNT DRACULA OFF BROADWAY
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-13
The Passion of Dracula opened off-Broadway in September 1977.

Bob Hall and David Richmond mixed humor into their retelling of Bram Stoker's Dracula. One of the highlights of their script were the good lines given to the vampire's half-child-like thirst quenching victims. Such as "Look at the size of that bat!" one called out, looking out a window just before being drained of blood. The play was directed by Peter Bennett and staged at the Cherry Lane Theatre. As in the book, the play takes place near a sanitarium, where the mysterious Count Dracula sets up for business in the rundown mansion next door. Beware of the Count. An irresistible rogue whomever kindled the longings of the virtuous village maidens.

The play fittingly opened at midnight followed by a Bloody Mary cocktail party, and received solid reviews. "Fast paced." "Exciting." "A welcome escape from reality." The play ran for two years. Chosen to play the menacing Count was Chris Bernau. Chris Bernau had been working on the vampire soap opera Dark Shadows. But now he got a chance to play the devil invented fiend from hell ... Count Dracula. Never allowed to get the fangs out of the prop department on Dark Shadows, Chris Bernau became a restless young vampire who couldn't decide which victim he wanted and so was determined to have all of them. "Mr. Bernau, pale as a candle and dressed all in black, achieves a fine balance between the awesome and the ridiculous," wrote Richard Eder in the New York Times. "His sudden entrances and exits, accompanied by clouds of steam, work very well."

Bernau's play was taped by Showtime and broadcast in January 1980. I would to see Showtime release it on dvd or vhs sometime.

"Dark, spooky and thoroughly enjoyable!" -- The Dark Phantom Review

Review Date: 2008-02-13
The Stoker File is a fascinating and ingeniously-written novel that will keep your hands glued to the pages until you've reached the end.

Due to a tragic flood that sweeps the city, a mysterious bundle of papers is found in the basement of the University of Budapest. On closer examination, the papers appear to be something unimaginable: the lost diary of Bram Stoker. Soon a team of researchers from the University of Columbia is assigned the job of proving the diary's authenticity. But then, people associated with the strange manuscript begin to suffer deadly accidents. Is the diary cursed or is it something even more sinister?

Brilliant and beautiful Laura Olsen Wynne, one of the researchers, discovers the secret of the diary and, at the risk of her own life, tries to prevent more deaths. To achieve this, she goes into hiding. Thus enters Detective Arnold Walters, who's put in charge of her disappearance and who becomes somewhat obsessed and fascinated by the lovely researcher. He must find her before other people -- or dark forces -- get to her. What is the real meaning of the diary and why are so many willing to kill for it? Will Walters find Laura in time to save her -- and his own -- life?

This was a highly enjoyable novel to read, not only because of the mystery, but because of the author's writing style - traditionally toned and reminiscent of those writers from the 19th Century. He makes Stoker's diary and voice sound surprisingly genuine. The atmosphere is dark and threatening throughout, and the puzzle will keep readers guessing for the conclusion. The story switches back and forth between the present and Stoker's narration in the diary, so we're transported to two very different worlds and times, each one vivid and filled with its own kind of suspense. Highly recommended to all who enjoy a dark, spooky read.

This is one of my all time favorite books. Holland's mastery of the english language and ability to paint such a vivid picture of the 'underworld' and realm of the undead is unparalleled, in my opinion.
The book commences in India and deals with the rituals that take place in a remote area that villagers deem to be cursed. It then migrates into the streets of England and into the lives of several vampires, gods, and immortals.
Check it out!
