I have been working in IT & network support for some years now, and am currntly untaking the Cisco Acadmey programs. This book turned up at the right time, as it explains things with greater clarity than anything else I have found. The presentation is logical and of a linear manner, making this my first choice in reference material, for both my studies and professional undertakings.

Read this book while its still available! Its language is so simple yet it touches you with a ferocity thats unthinkable!
I could relate to every charecter and that was the most freaky part!

The charecters in this book are rich and full of life. The plot is very engaging and what more can one say about a book thats so beautiful it makes you weep with joy!

Bravo Leavitt and the rest of you read it!

While not as good as his short stories, and awkward and somewhat amateurish in a few places, this is a good, strong first novel. Ideally I would give this one a 3.5, but since that's not an option, I'll err on the side of generosity. This novel explores coming out, family dynamics, and the selfish yuppie attitudes of the 80s.

This book was given to me by a co-worker who believed the subject matter and story would interest me. She was right. There are so many different issues dealt with in this book ranging from the struggle for sexual identity to the struggle of sharing it with you family.....to the ups and downs of living a life that is full of oppression and worry. There are many characters here with many different backgrounds. There is Phillip, the young gay man struggling to win acceptance from his mother. Elliott who fears commitment and leaves Phillip. Owen, Phillip's father who has to come to terms with his own sexual identity after years of marriage and living his life without being true to himself. Then there is Jerene who is basically disowned because of her homosexuality which is so common in this day and age and extremely sad. NO parent should ever do this to their child!!!!! UNCONDITIONAL LOVE is key! Jerene's new girlfriend Laura.....it is just a well written story on all levels.......my only complaint was the ending. There was no real closure. Other than that, I loved it!

Author David Leavit writes a brillant novel that I had a hard time putting down. While Phillip is confronting his changing relationship with his lover, Elliot, his father Owen is finally, confronting his homosexuality. Highly recommended. Each character is richly developed and textured, they feel like real people that you know. While the film is good, it uses London as a backdrop rather than the book's all-to-real-modern-urban life set in New York and in the transistion looses something.

Remarkable Novel

Review Date: 2004-05-12
I read this book for a class, and enjoyed it much more than I ever expected, especially in retrospect. I think it takes a little time to really get into, especially because Leavitt jumps back and forth between the three main characters and storylines, but once you get into the rhythm of the story, you are drawn in. Leavitt does a great character study of Owen, Rose, and Philip, and by the end of the novel, I felt like I knew them. Leavitt has an accessible wrting style, but the book itself is very literary and complex. For a first novel, especially, I think it's exceptional.

I began Love, Sal and was unable to put it down. His relationships represent the type of relationships that me and most of my friends have experienced, both [homosexual] or [heterosexual]--the push and pull...the battle of wits and emotions...the struggle....always trying to fight for control of ourselves and/or the other person. I appreciate the very honest way he writes. Thanks Sal for writing this book.

Love Sal is addictive reading. The anecdotes that he presents from his life are beyond merely humorous; they reflect his mature insight and remarkable sense of wit. He doesn't simply bring a smile to your face -- his articulate commentary reflects his point of view on a great variety of subjects that run the gamut from sex to AIDS to what it means to be gay. A must-read. While funny, much of the book has a serious thoughtful angle to it. Yet... he uses humor to get readers to think. He writes about the his experience with such insight, affection, and honesty. I can only hope that there is more to come.

Yes, letters. This is the story of Sal's life for three years in San Francisco told through a series of letters written to his friend, Tim, who has remained in Chicago. We see life in the gay ghettos, in the gay bars, in the workplace, and in many other venues as Sal explores his new home and makes friends and has relationships none of which turn out very well. Roommates are downers too but hey that happens a lot in reallife. If you want some insight into a gay man's life at the end of the 20th century this book will give you great insights.

It's definitely an educational experience.

Joel Zeff wrote a great book. It was humorous, insightful, & an amazingly quick read. I'd almost take off one star for the book being too short but I found that each chapter was the perfect length as a Daily Insight or for a brief mental healthy snack in between meetings. I also found myself writing little notes in the margins as I was reading. I recommend that you do the same and apply the exercises inside to your own particular situation. It works nicely.

The Mayo Family Health book is a "wealth of information."
My husband recently became ill and was hospitalized. We were able to pinpoint symptoms in the book which helped us along with our health provider get appropriate testing and treatment for his condition.

With healthcare today, we must be "informed consumers".
I have worked nearly 35 years in clinical laboratory medicine and I still learn something new everyday....this book certainly helps.

With this book, John Adams gives us principles and practices that can serve us not only in our professional lives but in our personal lives as well. In fact, Adams recognizes that there should indeed be no separation of values between life and work, and offers what amounts to a handbook of spiritual practice for our whole selves.

Has value for all (not just those seeking to start a business)!

Loved MIRACLES AT WORK by John A. Adams, a self-taught entrepreneur who built
a $3.5 million cleaning company after being fired as an
air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration.

He then sold this business in 1996 to follow his real passion
of helping others by writing this book and beginning Life Without
Limits, a Connecticut-based business development company . . . he
now travels throughout the country sharing his message that you
should "Remember . . . always expect miracles because . . .
something wonderful is about to happen!"

My only complaint with the book is its subtitle: BUILDING YOUR
BUSINESS FROM THE SOUL UP . . . it implies that this is
primarily to be read by those looking to begin a business, and
methinks that it is so much more than that . . . I see it is a self-help
book that will inspire anybody seeking to fulfill his or her potential.

While there are many useful business examples, I found there were
even more valuable tidbits taken from Adams' life . . . I was inspired
by how he was able to get past his bad times and not let them get
him down . . . also, I liked how he learned from virtually every
experience he has encountered.

Among the many insights that I gained from reading MIRACLES AT
WORK were the following:

* Ask yourself whether your "Crazymaker" [a term coined by Julia
Cameron in THE ARTIST'S WAY] have not helped you, in some way,
to become a better individual. Mine have. Think about those in your
life against whom you hold a grudge. Then release yourself from the
burden of resentment and anger you carry by forgiving them. Then
begin a process of self-forgiveness and start to enjoy a feeling of
liberation. "Not so easy?" Okay, don't forgive them--bless them,
as Pope John Paul did, as he faced his would-be assassin in his
prison cell. The Pontiff knows that the power of forgiveness lies in
releasing your heart to God by seeing the goodness in every human being.

* When Admiral Hyman Rickover was asked about his climb from
obscurity to Chief Naval Officer in charge of nuclear operations, he
simply pointed to those in great need, the imprisoned, the homeless,
the poor, and said, "There, but for the grace of God, go I." We are
blessed to be in a place where we are building our own business. That
is Grace. Grace also comes into our lives by helping others.

* Love is the most powerful energy in the universe--much greater than
all the destructive force our egos could hope to muster. All these
Principles and Practices depend upon love. It is the starting point,
the meaning and purpose for being and the solution to our most
pressing problems.

Am amazing thing occurs when you give love. Because it follows
the spiritual laws of the universe rather than the dictates of this
finite world, it increases. The more you give away, the more you
have to give.

John's book is a wonderful guide for anyone in business. Not only does it present a different way of doing business, but it also provides suggestions about living life on a higher plane. His book combines the wisdom of A Course in Miracles, The Artist's Way, 12 Steps, Wayne Dyer, The Four Agreements, and other spiritual guides, with his own experiences in the business world. The result is a blueprint for starting and running a values-based business. When I read it I felt inspired spiritually as well as grounded in strength and reality. I have recently left the "security" of teaching in public schools to start my own business. I am making new choices in my life based on this book. John's book is truly an inspiration and a book I will read more than once. Thank you, John!

I love this book! Mother Teresa speaks in very simple terms about her faith and her calling to follow Jesus. The chapters on love and prayer were very inspirational and convicting. We should all follow her example in how we treat one another. I am not a Catholic, but that doesn't matter, her message is for everyone. I have purchased several copies of this book to give away. The devotion of Mother Teresa should be an inspiration to us all (whether you are Catholic, Eastern Orthodox or Protestant; Christian or non-Christian). I'm a Methodist and I see in Mother Teresa a true imitation of Christ. She reminds us of God's love and how God uses us to minister to one another.

While I was growing up, people would call Mother Teresa a "living saint" (I grew up and still live in a heavily in a Catholic neighborhood). Recent evidence reveals that she sometimes wrestled with doubts and frustrations. This has actually enhanced my appreciation for her, in that I see Mother Teresa now as more a human being, who struggled along like the rest of us, and could relate with our faults and trials better than someone of superhuman constitution.

Her feeling for the poor; that is the economically, as well as, spiritually poor, gives us all a lot to think about. Whatever religion you are, I am sure you can find comfort in Mother Teresa's gentle spirit:

"I deal with thousands of Christians and non-Christians, and in each you can see such conscience at work in their lives, drawing them to God...If everyone were capable of discovering the image of God in their neighbors, do you think we would still need tanks and generals?"

This is a book to read every day for many years. It's a treat every morning to look at a breathtaking picture of Tibet and read a wise saying by Buddhist masters. The photographs create a sense of infinite Himalayan grandeur of that stark and gorgeous terrain of rock, snow and beautiful people --the young and the old and always with a twinkle in their eyes , awakening wonder in me of a world so harsh in many ways but with inspired people with an active worship. Great book with a page to turn every day of the year and I am on my second year. I have given it to many friends whether they are Buddhists or not and they find it special and enduring in its beauty and wisdom. .

This book has an original premise and strong, tight writing. As a Christian, I could really relate to the inner struggles of the main character. I would love to see Operation Firebrand made into a movie. It's that kind of story.

Christian men who read fiction don't have a lot of choices that appeal to them but Jefferson Scott is someone I can recommend highly.

If only there was a real Firebrand team. And who knows, maybe there is...

This is worth a read!

Why are these books going out of print?!

It's so sad when good fiction gets burried.

This is an awesome book! Jeff has done a wonderful job of fleshing out his characters and drawing us into their world. It's almost hypnotic. The Korean culture is painted with stunning realism. I actually got chills while reading it. Christians need more daring authors like this.

Thanks Jeff! Keep 'em comming!

Finally, realistic characters and good writing!!!

Anyone who is familiar with Christian fiction knows that trying to find a well written book within the genre is sadly hard to find. Most novels are so sterilized that nothing can growth within them or grow from them. The characters are unrealistic, flat and let's face it boring. I have found myself constantly disappointed after finishing a "good" Christian novel. I kept coming to the sad conclusion that even the bad secular fiction I had read was better than 95% of Christian fiction. As I have grown and matured I had hoped that the genre would do so as well, but unfortunately it has not progressed at all for at least the last ten years.

At the point that I was going to give up on Christian fiction altogether I came across Jefferson Scott's "Firebrand" series. I set myself up for another disappointment, but was pleasantly surprised. His books are filled with realistic, imperfect Christian people trying to live right. The plots are exciting, well-researched and refreshingly real. No whitewashed, over-processed, bland stories here. The books also shine a light on the tragedy in other parts of the world that Americans (particularly Christian Americans) are often not aware of or refuse to acknowledge. With each novel the characters develop and grow and the plot lines get better and more intriguing.

For anyone who is tired of the same old boring Christian books and is ready for something groundbreaking in the Christian genre or if you just want to read an exciting and interesting book, I highly recommend any of the books in the "Firebrand" series, or anything by Jefferson Scott.

***I just found out that Barbour Publishing is putting the series out-of-print, so make sure to buy the books while you can. Also if you enjoy this series write to the publisher and let your voice be heard (email: info@barbourbooks.com. Snail mail: PO Box 719 / 1810 Barbour Dr. Uhrichsville, OH 44683). If we don't speak up the genre will never change and we will be doomed to marshmallow fiction forever.***
