Fifteen-year old Dominic "Sherlock" Smith is a pretty normal guy. He lives at home in England with his mom and dad (who both are quick to remind him that they have very demanding jobs that keep them away from home a lot), a younger brother, Seb, and his always-ailing Grandad and hippie-loving Granny. He has a close circle of friends which include Amazon-looking girly-girl Tanya, raging sinusitis Tim, and concert- pianist-aspiring Emma. But there is one thing about Dom that makes him different--his obsession with Plastic, the pop group led by singer Lisa Voyd.
To Dom, Lisa is the epitome of womanhood. She's beautiful, she has an amazing voice, she writes most of the band's lyrics, and he's her biggest fan. Together with Tim and Tanya, Dom spends most of his time learning everything he can about Lisa (and, to a smaller extent, the other members of Plastic), dissecting every little fact printed in magazines and on the Web.
He's seen Plastic in concert, he owns every CD they've ever released, his wardrobe mainly consists of Plastic logo-ed t-shirts, and now the ultimate fan appreciation event is about to take place--Lisa Voyd will be appearing, in person, at the grand opening of the new Big Deal Records store, autographing the band's new album. And then something truly amazing happens. Dom gets trapped in a lift with none other than Lisa herself, and suddenly, all of his illusions of the wonderful, amazing Lisa are being put to the test.
Because in real life, the illustrious star of Plastic isn't as great as Dominic always thought. The band isn't the perfect symbol of youth that he's made it out to be--which Lisa is quick to point out. And as both Dom and Lisa realize things about themselves that they never even knew, all while trapped together in a lift in plain view of hundreds of screaming fans and television and news cameras, the ultimate pop princess and the ultimate fan just might learn something they've always needed to know.
PLASTIC FANTASTIC is fun, breezy, and the ultimate read for anyone who has ever been the number one fan. A great read!

Penelope Bransome had learned how thoroughly unpleasant love could be during her brief marriage. She was little more than a girl when wed, and by the time her husband's death released her she was a young woman determined never to be ensnared by a man again. Handsome, Lord Charles Mortimer had more adoration than he could possibly want as England's greatest hero and as the favorite of London's most ravishing lady, the beautiful, blue-blooded Georgina Staverton. Clearly Lord Mortimer could have not interest in retiring Penelope. Then they were thrown together and suddenly nothing was clear except certain feelings that both of them did not dare admit and that neither could ignore.

The story was great; however, the service was awful. The book stopped at chapter 36. One turned the page to finish the book and found themselves back on page 691, chapter 34. The ending and final outcome of the entire series was not in this copy, and I have returned your piece of crap. The book was listed at Amazon's Online Used Bookstore, sold by a subsidiary company of Amazon.com eligible for Amazon Prime in Acceptable Condition. I would have expected better of Amazon. A book that leaves out the ending is not "accaptable" by anyone's stretch of the imagination. Unfortunately, I could only return this crap and not exchange it for a real book.

The first book of the Harry Potter series was a brilliant starter, suitable in my opinion for all ages (i.e. for those who can read). This is definately not book a for small children however, due to the violence and cruelty that peppers the book. It still is a good fantasy book, well on the level or above of the most of current fantasy literature but its not on the level of the first book. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you will definately want to read this, as it provides all the answers, i.e. regarding Dumbledore's death, his past and on how Harry can battle Voldemort. In fact there is a short spellbattle between them right at the beginning at the book.
In short, don't expect the level of Tolkien's writing but you can expect a good fantasy novel with an all-out magical war between good and evil. If you are a HP fan, also prepare for some bloody fights and deaths of many good characters.

Okay ... I don't know what more could be said about this book ... good, bad or otherwise ... but here's my 2 cents worth:
I'm a grandmother, avid reader of all kinds of books. My son gave me the first 4 HP books for Christmas a few years back. My immediate reaction was "ick .. children's books .. did you make a boo-boo?" However, I read them (knowing nothing about HP) and was absolutely delighted. They took me to that place all favorite books do. I was drawn in to the story; the characters became a part of me; and I just had to see how it all turned out. So, there's the history.
I thought JK was spot-on with this book. She tied up all the loose ends, let us see most of our favorite characters again, one last time, and gave us an ending that tied in all of the hints and bits and pieces that came with the first 6 books. IMHO, it was brilliant.
My only objection ... I would have loved one more chapter .. after Harry wonders if Kreacher would bring him a sandwich. I would have loved to see the immediate reactions of the Weasleys (especially Ginny), the Hogwart's teachers, the remaining OotP members, etc. But I'm glad she did the 16 years later chapter. It will have to be enough.
Thank you for a great ride Harry!

Ever since my friend got me hooked on Harry Potter I've always told her I love them, but they are not my favorite books. Until now, Harry Potter and the deathly Hallows is my favorite book ever!! It is the last book in the Harry Potter series =[ and (in my eyes) the best of the series. It is sad, suspenseful, scary, amazing, WONDERFUL, and everything else you could possibly imagine!! It's insane that anyone wouldn't enjoy this book. In this book it should be Harry's last year at Hogwarts but as you should know if you read the sixth book he might not go back. Will he go back?? I can't tell you that, but what I can tell you is that the entire wizarding world is in danger and everyone is scared for their own safety. Voldemort is strong, but so is Harry. And as the prophecy says, "For neither can live while the other survives!"

In this novel Lisa See gives us a harrowing and compelling insight to the secret inner realm of women's world in China during the early 1800's. See assures us repeatedly that the women of this book do not take on an adventure full of action and daring but is an emotional and heart wrenching story of the silent and understated life that is woven delicately in the ladies upper chamber.
Not since my reading of Kite Runner had I encountered a youthful relationship of such loyalty, depth and affection that it seems to transcend the normal boundaries of life. The two women Lily and Snow Flower are laotong, a special arranged relationship that composes a "deep heart love." Lily, the narrator is writing this story in the twilight years of her life in preparation for her funeral but more importantly to pay homage to this most treasured friendship.
Through her story we see through the eyes of a willful but obedient girl who dedicates herself fully to the ways of her culture. Although we have heard of foot binding, the urgency that women tried for male babies, and the subservience of the women in the house to their husbands, reading about Lily's experience with it brings a much fuller and deeper understand of what these women truly endured. While all of this adds to the flavor and significance to the novel, it is the kinship that develops between Lily and Snow Flower that truly captivates the reader.
It becomes one of those rare books that you can't put down, learn from and recommend to all of your friends. Read it and you won't regret it.

This book is just not well written. It feels flat and one dimensional. You do not get an emotional attachment for any of the characters in the book. One thing that stood out for me is that it was more like a dumbed down happy ending type book that we in the American culture prefer. Life was hard for women in ancient china, thought of as worthless until they could bear sons. "Love" as we know it didn't really exists between the men and women. It was an arrangement a way of extending the family but in this book all the men "love" their women even when they are beating them senseless. Don't get me wrong some couples may have become affectionate to each other after the years had pass but is was not the same notion of "love" as we Americans understand. Life and Deaths in this book happens so quickly to characters you don't really know so it has little impact on you. I didn't feel like I was transported to this time period and got to know the culture or the women. I felt more like a passerby speeding along getting little bits and pieces of the landscape. Lily and Snowflower never became real people but a representation of the culture of women the author wanted us to view. I think this book is lack in showing the true meaning of what it was like having to live only by obligations, honor and rituals that was the mainstay of Chinese culture.

I originally read this about two years ago and absolutely adored it. I found myself revisiting the novel for a book club and was just as enthusiastic about experiencing the lives of Snow Flower and Lily a second time. It is a sweeping tale of two girls who are bound as "old sames" in rural 19th Century China. Its main focus is about women's culture and explores the customs of the inner world, from foot binding to the secret women's writing of nu shu to arranged marriages. These women know that their place in life is strictly to bear sons and obey, obey, obey. The friendship between Lily and Snow Flower is often tumultuous as they deal with life and status changes, hardships, and betrayals. Theirs is a story that transcends time and culture.
Wow! A wonderfully rich story- my highest recommendation.

I looked at some of the other reviews before writing this. I saw that there were 2 or so out of the 20 or so total that I looked at which were negative. I can't believe anyone wouldn't find this book to be incredible. I know we all have different tastes and all but please- it is just one of those amazing stories that anyone could relate to- life, love, the bonds of friendship, struggles, and family. Lisa See tells this story in a way that unfolds like her fan in the story. She is a highly skilled writer who lets the words melt in our mouth as we savor what we read. This is truly a beautiful story.

but not in the gross sense of the word. For all the "chick lit" books out there, this novel really gives insight into what men think of when dealing with relationships. There is so much going on in there; all his insecurities and all the details he remembers about each girl or each situation. Who says men don't remember? The movie captures the endless questioning and inner struggle perfectly, never mind that John Cusack was the perfect person to play the main charecter "Rob", given Cusack's film history of getting dumped and never getting the girl, etc.
This book is a must read for anyone, man or woman, who would like to comically explore the ins and outs of other people's relationships.

High Fidelity by Nick Hornby *****
High Fidelity follows the story of Rob. A thirtysomething who owns a failing record shop (Championship Vinyl) and is in the middle of a failing relationship with Laura, who he is having trouble excepting that he loves and wants to spend the rest of his life with.
Rob is on the journey of acceptance and a journey to find himself (yes at thirty something years old he still does not fully know who and what he is or wants to be) and along that journey we encounter an ignored genius American folk musician who Rob falls for. The Musical Moron Twins who help Rob run his failing shop, Liz, a mutual friend between Laura and Rob. But most importantly Ian, the man next door who is a wedge and blessing to their relationship at the same time.
Told through top five musical and movie lists and in a insightful and original tone. High Fidelity is Hornby's crowning achievement as an author and one that should be read by any fan of a great read.

I read this book and I liked it. It inspired me to read more of Stephen King`s books.
The scene that stood out for me the most was when
Annie hobbled Paul. It was so attentive to detail that it felt like I was looking at a picture inside of the book.
This scene showed just how deep Annie`s paranoia went. Paul hadn`t done half the things she was accusing him of and his legs were healing, but what she did to him pushed him back to the beginning of his torture.
You should read this book because it is so good that once you pick it up you can`t put it down.

Just before he leaves his hotel he finishes the first work of his he has been proud of in a very long time. The book is a break for the series of books he makes his income and bankable name off of the series is named Misery. He is "saved" from the crash from his number 1 fan Annie Wilkes. She nurses him to health by feeding him through an IV and getting hooked on a pain killer Norvil. She then makes it her mission from "God" to have him write Misery books and she has many nasty ways of motivating him taking away his pill, a leg crushing blow, and then she can get real persuasive

This will continue to be one of the most dazzling examples of children's literature. How can you not love something of so much horror that comes off with such humor and charm?
In classic Dahl fashion, a boy is horrible orphaned to be left with his grandmother, a woman who belives in the dangers of witches.
What follows is a hotel adventure that manages to make witches villainous and yet as properly British as possible.
It's tongue-in-cheek and continuinly clever. I also think it is some of the best imagination Dahl has ever shone.

I really love this book. It's basically a book for children or young adults but I don't care. Ronald Dahl is such a vivid writer who is very descriptive and thought-provoking. This book's almost like a sci-fi fairytale. I still love "The Witches" because it was one of my very favorite books as a child. And what's wrong with that? People hold close their favorite movies or television programs as youngsters, why not books, too? There should be a new section of books, comfort reading. If you liked the book, I also recommend the movie as well. Remember, only bad witches are ugly!
