Spiritual Practitioner & 12 Step Recovery Review
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-24
This is a fabulous book! I used it in my lecture at the Utah University School of Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies and generated quite a buzz.

This book is an affirmative structure that supports care-givers and children to win in the daily walk of life.

I use this simple and straight-forward tool as a resource and teach it to those in 12 step based residential treatment, in my seminars at New Thought churches and in private practice. I have interviewed the author on my TV talk show and used this interview as a way to introduce the book to others. As people hear about the book and view my interview with Jim, I have been asked to present it as part of my seminar for Family Drug Court, and for caseworkers in the Adoption and Foster care systems.

The professionals attending my lecures have asked that the author write his next book on Addiction Recovery. The method used is universal for creating a positive construct to bring order and easy comprehension of translating principles and core values to all those who have the desire to play. Congratulations Jim McMahon for the expanding success of this book.

I am in currently in Newport,RI and the Juvenile Hearing Committee is interested in this book as well. Bless Jim and his family for creating this treat.

A must-buy for the mother of any daughter!

This book is a 20!

This is a pen and book process. It asks questions, gives activities and planning guides.

The first part teaches the definition of self-esteem and helps you evaluate your own upbringing and the attitudes you learned as a child that--even though you say you won't--you'll teach your daughter.

It shows you how what you say and DO will help her develop a `Hardy Personality'. It gives a stage by stage strategy for raising a `identity achieved' daughter.

But it isn't just a here's-how-to-do-it book. You develop your own plan for raising your daughter, and part of it is how you will change your own behavior to achieve it.

The authors say: Think of this book as "Raising a Daughter 101". Yep. That's what it is. I just wish I had this 30 years ago when my daughter was an infant, instead of my granddaughter.

But don't give up hope--even if your daughter is a teenager (or 30 like mine) there's a lot to learn in this wonderful book.

Fitting In
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-01
Finally, a book for the child who wants to fit in. The heroine deals with the same issues that all middle school age students, especially girls, struggle with - too fat, too dark, too whatever. Addressing those concerns would be enough, but there is more - a wonderful twist that will keep the reader interested. Historically accurate with a web page for the interested reader, Time Will Tell is the perfect book for the contemporary middle-schooler.

Brilliant insights into human nature!

As with all of my experiences with Rank, my eyes were opened by reading this book. In it, he discusses the nature, and paradoxes, of a multitude of human experiences. He also provides a compassionate critique of many of the then popular perspectives (i.e., Freudian). While I don't feel it's my place to summarize the book in it's entirety (that's what reading it is for), it certainly was worth the read and has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf!

An Excellent Resource

This book is an excellent resource for anyone who has suffered a loss or for those who care about someone who has suffered a loss. Miller writes beautifully and I have given away numerous copies of this books to friends and associates. The chapters are short and easy to read (an essential element for those who are grieving). While geared primarily toward those who have experienced loss through death, the "12 Things" are practical and quite helpful for anyone who has suffered a loss of any type.

Great book for teachers!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-12
Miriam Cohen explores what it means to "be a reader" through her delightful class of first graders. Jim wonders when he will learn to read. His holistic teacher points out to him that he is already reading many things such as familiar books, classroom signs and so on. As young children enjoy reading (or listening) about Jim's exploration, they also are learning about reading and what it means to be a reader. This book helps children understand that reading is developmental and depends on the social context. A great book for Pre-K to 1st graders. I use it with a unit called "I Can Read" that helps children appreciate their early reading abilities. Also a good choice for older children who are working with young readers as reading buddies or partners. This book is also a good choice for open house or parent meetings- to help anxious first grade parents to relax. If you haven't read any of the other books in this series, check them out too!

It finally pointed me towards recovery...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-03
You never really will 'get over it,' however life does go on and I had to rejoin it. This book gave me that courage, mostly by giving me real tools with which to handle all the new challenges that were coming my way (wills, lawyers, social security, etc). After 8 months of grieving, it finally turned me towards recovery.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with a very sick spouse or has lost their spouse in the last year or just can't seem to rejoin the world, no matter how long it has been since they were widowed.
