Surprisingly neglected, especially in the academy, Schuyler will soon be recognized as one of the most gifted poets of his generation. The deluge of doctoral dissertations cannot be far off; I encourage readers to beat the rush.

Except for his last poems, JS is one of the best poets ever and deserves more attention. If you're unfamiliar with his work, look at the cover and it'll tell you almost everything you need to know before you bask in the light.

James Schuyler's COLLECTED POEMS is a great volume of poetry. Ranging from aspects of daily life (such as plants, walks in the countryside, friends, urban life, etc.) to contemplation of death, life, one's interiority, and God, Schuyler's subjects are compelling and relevant. What I especially like is his ability to take a mundane, everyday object or concept (like a view from a building) and give it a new, intensely personal perspective. This is his major gift. One aspect that I didn't like about some of his poems (and this is true for all poets) is his tendency to be obscure at times (though only a small portion of his poems are abstruse) and his long, rambling prose poems, like "Hymn to Life." "The Morning of the Poem," though, is a fantastic and imaginative piece of literature, broad in its scope and revealing of Schuyler in its tone and subjects. Overall, this volume of poetry unites the works of a superb poet, who valued the artist's perspective and his or her obligation to record a view of the world different than that of the average person. This volume will, I fervently hope, remain in the continuum of literature and in discussions of it for many years to come.

This collection should establish Schuyler as one of the great poets of his generation. I particularly admire his tautness--precise names and descriptions, inventive phrases--as well as his flexibility--a wide-ranging eye and ear and a free-flowing memory. Throughout these poems there lurks a clear intention to inform, to connect, to synthesize. I look forward to returning to this book many times for refreshment and illumination.

These sparkling poems mimic in their movements the springtime light that's always raining down around this poet, despite whatever woes he might have had. Read the long "Morning of the Poem" and tell me it isn't one of the most moving poems in the history of poetry.

Byron at his best
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-01
In his day Byron was the rage of Europe. He was the romantic hero, wild, impulsive, able to indulge his lusts and loves to the end, revolutionary, tormented and tormenting, confined to no law but that of his own impulse and nature. And also a tremendously powerful and skilled writer in many different forms. His fluency and strength enabled him to produce the novel-like longer poems, "Don Juan" and "The Prisoner of Chillon" which outside the academic world are not much read today. Perhaps what readers today most know are some of the beautiful shorter lyrics in this anthology, "She walks in Beauty like the night" being the most famous of them.

Byron...who knew?

I am not a fan of the English Romantics but I will make a big exception for Lord Byron. He's wild! "Don Juan," parts of which are included in this book, is bawdy and hilarious. Keep in mind that the poem was not considered fit for young ladies to read when it came out...are you tempted yet?

The Dover Thrift Editions are surprisingly well-constructed - they'll outlast, say, your Oxford World Classics paperbacks - and the poems are usually well-chosen. And they're....cheap!

You can't go wrong with this one

This is a great collection of thirty of Byron's short poems, arranged in chronological order. Everyone should own at least one collection of Byron's work, and at this price, why not make this the one?

Enjoyable, Imaginative Poems - Byron Excels in Many Genre

Handsome, rich, titled, adventuresome, free-spirited, and even scandalous, Lord Byron was also the most prolific and versatile of the romantic poets. In this collection I was continually surprised as Byron excelled in one genre after another. I give a few examples:

I Would I Were A Careless Child recalls an idyllic life of childhood in Scotland. I wondered whether Lord Byron was truly sincere in his request to 'take back this name of splendid sound'.

Contrastingly, in the short poem Damaetas we encounter an untrustworthy, manipulative child 'versed in hypocrisy' who is soon 'old in the world though scarcely broke from school'.

Stanzas To A Lady On Leaving England tells of an enduring love: 'have loved so long, and loved but one'. Nonetheless, soon thereafter Byron playfully describes The Girl of Cadiz, a beautiful Spanish maiden. We also meet Maid of Athens, Ere We Part and the innocent She Walks in Beauty.

To my surprise, the love poem When We Two Parted devolves into betrayal, broken vows, and deceit.

The Prisoner of Chillon is a chilling fable, a narrative of three brothers, chained to dungeon pillars, and dying slowly. The horrific poem Darkness is imaginative terror worthy of Edgar Allan Poe. And don't be misled by the apparently peaceful beginning to the macabre When the Moon is on the Wave (from Act 1, Scene 1, of Manfred).

The long narrative Beppo is totally different, a playful and amusing story that is enjoyable to read again and again. Dear Doctor, I Have Read Your Play is a humorous, rambling rejection note from a publisher, addressed to John William Polidori, Byron's friend and fellow poet.

I especially liked the two short, sentimental poems So We'll Go No More A Roving and My Boat Is on the Shore.

The Vision of Judgment is a lengthy, humorous satire that is still fun to read today, even though some references to topical events and political personalities are now unfamiliar. (It was probably less amusing to those individuals targeted by Byron.). In contrast, the short poem, Who Killed John Keats?, is sharp satire, not at all amusing.

The thirty-one poems in this 100 page Dover Thrift Edition are quite enjoyable. After reading this short collection, apparently only a small fraction of Lord Byron's creative work, I suspect that you will have little choice but to become better acquainted with Byron's poetry.

Short but sweet

This is a great collection of mostly short poems by one of the greatest poets in memory. beginning with "Damaetas" and ending with "On this Day I complete my Thirty-sixth year" these 30 poems, in chronological order, represent a great portion of Byron's work, including portions of Childe Herold's Pilgramage, hebrew melodies, don juan, and manfred. great as an introduction to byron.

One thing about Professor Moore: the man rides motorcycles and has more energy than a 6-year old. He's not the average UCLA professor.

Thus, you should be aware that the book reflects it's writer's personality. The book is not only informative, but a pretty fun read as well. Friends from other law schools tell me how dry and dull their entertainment law texts are - a fact which absolutely boggles my mind. The Biz is concisely written, and filled with lively examples

Mr. Moore teaches at UCLA, and his course is extraordinarily well attended. His book is considered a must-have for lawyers working in Entertainment, and although the focus is law, I think it would be a handy reference for anyone new to the creative side of Entertainment, especially those seeking to protect themselves and their interests when making deals and such.

Complete, informative, funny-- what more can you ask for?

I was afraid when I picked up _The Biz_ that it was going to be a dry read-- legal aspects of any business are not known for being a scintillating read. However, I am happy to report that it was not only a quick and interesting read, it was a genuinely funny one. Moore had me laughing out loud on several occasions.

Even granted that this is not a book you read for the humor, it is refreshing to see a reference book so well written. My only quarrel was that I would have liked to see a bibliography included with the book in case I wanted to go in depth into any of the areas covered.

Mickey R. Dansby, James B. Stewart, and Schuyler C. Webb effectively collaborate to edit Managing Diversity In The Military: Research Perspectives From The Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, a compilation of twenty-four lengthy, critical essays of a subject that inevitably arouses heated debate: issues of diversity in the United States military, and how to best resolve often widely conflicting opinions. Managing Diversity In The Military is divided into five main sections, which address issues from diversifying military leadership to gender integration/sexual harassment to race and military discipline. A scholarly, academic examination of a highly complicated subject fraught with human complexities, Managing Diversity In The Military is essential reading for anyone directly affected by or interested in this key managerial issue affecting the readiness and performance capabilities of the United States armed forces today.

Auden was right

Review Date: 2007-04-17
This book deserves to be recognized as the "minor classic" W. H. Auden thought it was destined to become. The high camp of much of the proceedings only makes the book more profound in its investigation of the contemporary manners of negotiating affect through objects. In this it looks back to Wilde and Henry James, as it does also in its arch staging of the objectification of a mystified "Europe." Entirely fascinating, urbanely hilarious.

Who would think that two experimental poets could write a comic novel without stylistic pretensions? There's nothing profound here, just a quick read with plenty of laughs. The title conveys the substance fairly well: Schuyler and Ashbery have created a cast of middle- to upper-class fools for whom they have little respect. This could, of course, be fairly tiresome ("aren't the bourgeosie so silly!"), if it weren't for the authors' keen sense of humor. Think of this as a detailed pitch for a good Woody Allen movie, or a Firbank novel for the mid-twentieth century.

Unsystematic Daily Appreciation

These are for the most part very short capsule reviews of shows in New York City in the 1950's and 60's. Many of the artists represented are relatively unknown (at least to me) so this allowed me to focus on Mr. Schuyler's responses themselves. And that's what so many of these reviews are - open-eyed responses to things seen, free of theory and so nearly timeless. Just as a snapdragon might appear in one of his poems written on a day in his life, so a dash of paint appears in one of his reviews written on a day in his life.

Schuyler is best remembered (with Kenneth Koch, John Ashberry, and Frank O'Hara) as one of the "New York" school of poets. This slim little novel, however, shows that his talents in prose have been underappreciated. ALFRED AND GUINEVERE is a hilarious little story--told entirely through dialogue, letters, and Guinevere's diary--of two very precocious children sent to live in the country with their uncle and grandmother for reasons initially unclear to them. Their attempts to piece together the larger adult world (which may comprise adultery, death, disappointment, and loneliness) are very funny and poignant, and though Alfred and Guienevere often get on each others' nerves their mutual devotion still rings quite true. This is a fast read, and its high quality may still not justify the exorbitant cover price. (NYRB has been charging too much for its editions, which are beautiful and spectacularly chosen, but often run to novella-length rather than to full novel-length). But I was glad I had bought--and read--this little-known jewel.

Out of print for nearly 50 years, New York Review Books has happily reprinted this slim, charming, nearly forgotten classic by Schuyler, best known as a poet. Told entirely through the dialogue, letters, and diary entries of two very precocious children -- Alfred and Guinevere, sent to live in the country with their uncle and grandmother for reasons not entirely clear to them -- Schuyler brilliantly and hilariously portrays their attempts to piece together the larger, enigmatic adult world around them. Beneath the book's apparently guileless surface, there also lies a sophisticated awareness of the complicated ways in which words work to define the boundaries between fantasy and reality, innocence and knowledge. Thoroughly delightful, Alfred and Guinevere will move you with both beauty and poignancy.

Not Dispensational As Described

I recently purchase the New Pilgrim Bible and was sorely disappointed. In the INTRODUCTION it is stated: "The New Pilgrim Bible is an UPDATED and ENHANCED edition of the original work first released in 1948 (should have left it alone!!!). It continues to REFLECT the INTENT of the original editors and contributors: to create a study Bible with a doctrinal emphasis SIMILAR to that of the Scofield Study Bible." Well, a brief glance at the study notes clearly shows that the new edition kept the name and it's affiliation to the reputation of the Scofield Study Bible--the most well-respected Bible of all time--and that's all!!! A sampling of the footnote to Matt.5:3-16 is clearly COVENANT Theology, and certainly not dispensational in its teaching:"...It (the Sermon on the Mount) proclaims the constitution of that kingdom and applies in a particular sense to the government as it will be when Christ returns to reign (good so far)... Christians, those who have been born again...are heirs of the kingdom (?) and as such should endeavor...to live as closely as possible to the principles presented in this sermon (not true, for the Sermon on the Mount IS NOT written specifically to the Church, but to Israel looking to the heavenly kingdom and Messiah). Covenat Theology would have the believer put back under the LAW our Lord address in Matt. Chapter 5. This is clearly not a DISPENSATIONAL Bible.

I was really looking forward to receiving my new Pilgrim Bible becuse I have used an older version for a long time and had thought that this new version would expand and improve the already excellent notes and references. However, I was very upset when I recieved the New Pilgrim Bible, becaue the editors had not expanded the notes, but in fact had eliminated all references to the Gifts of the Spirit, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, and other references related to the supernatural work of God. My first thought was to write the publisher, then thought better of it since they are the ones who have out these important notes and did not add any new notes that I could see on my brief review. In the book of Acts the speaking in tongues at Pentecost and other examples later in the new Church were ignored. Why? Even if you are not Pentecostal these are facts that are in the Bible and cannot be ignored by any scholar.

I strongly recommend that you do not purchase this Bible if you are interested in scholarly or Spirit led notes and comments.

Another reader's comments were hilarious about the gifts not focused on ....Like there are alot of people being raised from the dead, even pentecostal pastors learn foreign languages to be missionaries. No not much evidence of individual Holy Spirit manifestation. God works through prayer now that our cannon is closed and the Jewish nation is on hold until "Jacob's trouble". Satan will be empowered with all lying signs and wonders if your looking for signs,an adultrous and evil generation seeks for signs, There I dealt with them.
