Tale of an Amazing Journey of AwakeningReview Date: 2007-12-22
This book isn't really a "how-to" book but rather a narrative that describes the work of the Holy Spirit and the journey of a group of friends that follow the Spirit's lead to create opportunities of young Christians throughout Europe (and older Christians as well) to reconnect to Christianity's ancient tradition of prayer expressed in ways that are both true to the tradition and relevant to the culture. Title of the book comes from Greig's continued drawing of inspiration from the prophetic passage of the second chapter of Joel that is repeated by Peter on the morning of Pentecost in the book of Acts. It is clear throughout the book that Greig sees this movement as a continued fulfillment of that prophecy and the stories he shares with his readers bear that out.
For me, the power of this book was found in it's ability to encourage me consider a life of radical prayer both personally and within my community. The stories of God's working through the people of this movement are truly stunning and humility of the leaders of the movement in their willingness to be faithful to the calling of the Spirit and to not usurp It's power for their own benefit is refreshing in a day when it seems that too many church leaders have lost sight that they act in God's providence rather than the other way around. Those looking for a "how-to" guide will need to get ahold of the 24-7 Manual as this text is light on details. However, this book provides the inspiration and the encouragement to do so. As I read each chapter, I found myself called to stop thinking about how to serve God and to start praying and calling others together in prayer.
I highly recommend this book to all Christians wondering if the Spirit still moves in our world and, if It does, how they can connect with It.

An observer of peopleReview Date: 2008-09-27
The people in his stories are unique and have qualities some would find interesting. His writing is very descriptive and he captures countless details not understood or seen by the casual passerby. You can easily place yourself as a fly on the wall soaking in your surroundings.
If you read Up in the Old Hotel with literary merit in mind, then you will be in for a good dose of excellent writing by a standard of yesteryear. If you are looking for people who fit outside the box, you will surely find them. If you are looking for a glimpse of the past, then be prepared to journey back with a fine guide who didn't miss a thing.
There will be many of the older generation that will remember, with clarity, when Mitchell's writings first appeared and the impact they made. It is to this group that I recommend Up in the Old Hotel.
Though a brilliant writer, I was not drawn to his stories. For me they lacked the "snap, crackle, and pop" of today's aggressive writing style. If New York had been my home over the years, then I would have found a deeper appreciation and understanding for those who made up Mitchell's fine work.

A toolworker's complete guide, but ....Review Date: 2007-12-17
BUT... my personal interest is in sharpening kitchen knives. And the chapter on knife sharpening is the least informative in the book, and really tells the reader nothing new that is not already available on many web sites. In fact the Mr Lee actually says he only included this chapter because nobody would take his book seriously if it didn't have a chapter on knife sharpening. As a result, the chapter is not not very good. and in fact contains some wrong advice. eg using plastic book binders as edge guides: - Sorry Mr Lee, but they just do not work.
For a complete knife book, you would be far better off with Chad Ward's new book "An Edge in the Kitchen", far better than this book by Mr Lee.
I don't mean to disrespect the author, or this book. But it is really for woodworking tools, not kitchen knives.

Prevent Prostate Cancer--The Need To Be ScreenedReview Date: 2008-09-24
From: www.BasilAndSpice.com
Patrick Walsh, M.D., author of Guide To Surviving Prostate Cancer and Distinguished Service Professor of Urology--The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, is the world's foremost authority on prostate cancer. His book provides some striking news for men:
* More than 200,000 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.
* 27,000 will die in the U.S. from it this year.
* Prostate cancer is the most common major cancer in men.
* Because prostate cancer is silent, generally without symptoms, early detection is the key.
* Men should begin being screened for prostate cancer at age 40.
* When prostate cancer is small, it is curable.
* More than 95% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer are alive ten years later.
Dr. Walsh evaluates the three major risk factors--age, race, and family history. Prostate cancer is the scourge of older men (age 60-79) with a risk rate of 1 in 7 developing the cancer. The cancer frequently takes time to grow, over the course of decades.
The highest risk of prostate cancer hits African American men. Why this is, is not completely understood, but may involve genetic susceptibility, diet, and lack of vitamin D. Their cancers are also more likely to be severe types and recur.
Risk of prostate cancer grows higher with familial links. In fact, the risk is 2.5 times higher if your father or brother had prostate cancer. Hereditary prostate cancer, (possible risk of 50%) is believed to occur when three first degree family members had it, the disease shows itself in three generations, or if two relatives developed the disease earlier (less than age 55).
The most important action to take is to get screened, beginning at age 40. The PSA test can provide a baseline for later years. Dr. Walsh adds that those between the ages of 50 and 64 who die of prostate cancer, could very well have been saved if the disease had been caught while in their forties.
In addition, Dr. Walsh includes a prevention chapter in his new second edition. He recommends men eat a minimum of five fruits and vegetables a day, especially focusing in on the cruciferous vegetables as cited from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli are examples of the type of vegetables which contain sulforaphane--an important anticancer ingredient which helps to increase potent enzymes in the body. In turn, the body is assisted in creating its own antioxidants to help ward off cancer.
This book is thorough and provides answers to practically every question about prostate cancer. I would recommend that EVERY man read it.

Want to look up 1 Clement? Jurgens includes a biography with all the facts listed, plus speculative information: "Whether or not he was Peter's convert, as the Pseudo-Clementines would have it..." p 8). And in the footnotes: "This is the first time the word 'layman' was used in Christian literature" p 13).
The depth of the information, the perfect choices are remarkable. You might be able to live without these three volumes, but studying the early fathers without them would be much, much more difficult.

Between chapters explaining the science are individual patients' stories. In photos they are doing everything from skiing and skin diving to playing with children and dogs. They share how the common drugs didn't help, and sometimes almost killed them! On antibiotics their diseases are controlled.
When I asked about antibiotics, my rheumatologists refused. Surely they'd prescribe it if it worked, wouldn't they? Well, if you like cover-up stories this is for you. Dr. Brown explains the history--how the auto-immune theory took hold. The patients see another side. Arthritis is big business. Treating us indefinitely is profitable. Curing us--is not.
Page 33: "...until physicians are confronted by educated consumers, there is very little incentive for them to change. ...just because [this] therapy repeatedly has proven effective doesn't mean physicians will automatically give it to everyone it can help. In some cases that will depend on how effectively patients are able to use the power of this new knowledge. That is the reason for this book."
My diseases got worse after years on the usual drugs. I read a ton of books and did everything to heal naturally, diet, supplements, chiropractic, mind-body. I'm sure it helped, but the bottom line is--Dr. Brown was right. Lupus, RA, Scleroderma, etc. are all reactions to an infection. Other treatments mask symptoms while the disease continues underneath. Tetracycline is the only thing that attacks the source.
I was almost completely crippled when a friend told me about this book. I switched to her rheumatologist--my 5th. Now my pain is mostly gone, I walk and move normally, my deformities are less, and my blood work is better. Some lupus markers are gone!
I wish I had known and acted sooner. So please READ THIS BOOK!! And see www.roadback.org.
