An informative book on what motivated NC to do what he did, but not much on how he arrived at certain colors, composition, studies before completing a major work, etc. There is a lot of information that seems unnecessary, but it all comes together at the end. If you want to know the progression of his work, it is here; but there is not alot on technique.

The forementioned "Biography at its best" is fitting. David Michaelis went the extra mile to gather coupious historical data on Wyeth and his background. The evidence given paints a picture of the very soul of this man, almost to the point of smelling his oil-stained hands.

It is remarkable to catch a glimpse of this energetic and powerful artist who somehow balanced family, busines and sanity by applying passion to all he encountered. Whether or not our hero was particularly faithful to his wife can be argued, but his evident ability to excel in whatsoever he set out to do is inspiring.

A great read for those interested in disciplining one's self to master the studio and the home.

My brother loaned me a copy of this book because we both collect American illustrations. That qualifies some of my enthusiasm for this book a bit. I am already a fan of the golden age(s) of American illustration.
The life of N. C. Wyeth is impressively detailed by the author. He mostly uses detailed and extensive letters written by the family to piece together what would seem a very accurate account of N.C.'s life. This book helped piece together some of the influences I assumed N.C. had throughout his life. From Pyle to the war, depression, to family, it was a very complicated life for the entire family. A great read with enough personal melodrama to keep it very interesting. My only complaint was the occasional writing quirk where the author sometime wrote of the future while writing mostly a chronological book. It's hard to describe, but readers will notice this and occasionally get a little confused by the style. That's my only negative comment. (And frankly, I do not see how this writing method could have been avoided since some of the information was necessary in order to piece the story together.)

I don't know if there is another Family that has continuously contributed to the world of art, and done so with such skill, as the 5 generations of Wyeths whose story is told in this work.

The title of my review may seem a bit odd but I believe those who read this book will find it appropriate. I read this book when it originally was published and then recently read it again. You need not be anything more than someone who loves to read to enjoy this book. While I am a great admirer of Mr. Andrew Wyeth's work and to a lesser extent other members of the Wyeth Family, I have no Art History education. The beauty of this work is that it is an incredible story on it's own, that additionally the story is true with 2 Wyeth Family members still painting, only enhances the reading. The fact this is not fiction makes the story all the more remarkable.

If you have already read about Mr. Andrew Wyeth's work you certainly will gain a great deal of insight as to why he may view his art as he does. Another wonderful book that focuses on Mr. Andrew Wyeth is by Richard Merryman, "Andrew Wyeth A Secret Life". It often seems that great artists in a range of artistic fields seem to have more than their share of drama in their lives. This is certainly the case with this 5 generational span of the Wyeths. There is also a great deal of tragedy and sadness.

Whether or not you are aware of or enjoy the work of The Wyeth Clan, they have and will continue to remain of great importance to Art History. Ranging from the illustrations by N.C Wyeth of dozens of books that are known to us all, to some of the most recognized images in the world as is the case with Andrew Wyeth's "Christina's World" from 1948, chances are you do know of the Wyeths.

The story most don't know is of the woman who is in the mentioned painting, her lifetime, and the stories and paintings that resulted from the house that she is looking towards in the painting. Not all of what you will learn is comfortable, some is sad; some behavior from members of the Family is eccentric to say the least.

What you will experience is a sweeping story that continues to this day. If an endorsement by an internationally acclaimed Artist would help, read what Mr. Barry Moser had to say about this book. And then go look at the book he was illustrating, the work he set aside to read this story. I cannot think of a more reliable recommendation.

Know the Family, know the work, or read as a novel. You will not de disappointed.

Although I was familiar with the paintings of Andrew & Jamie Wyeth, I wasn't aware of N.C. until I read his letters in Dorie McCullough Lawson's wonderful collection, "Posterity: Letters of Great Americans to Their Children." The brilliant writing in those letters, and the story of the tragic accident that killed him and his little grandson, made me want to know more. It led me to this book. I've just finished it, and can't stop thinking about it. If a novelist made up this saga, one might say it was just too fantastic. And yet the most fantastic thing of all is that it's true. David Michaelis weaves the tale, not just of N.C. Wyeth, but of his family and his times. Although so many people are introduced, the writing is clear and vibrant, and one never loses track of who's who. No novel could be more compelling than this saga, with twists and turns that almost had me gasping. Biography just doesn't get any better than this. Whether or not you're interested in Art, it is well worth your time. Bravo to Mr. Michaelis!

In a world of relativism and unbridled inclusiveness, we need a clear understanding of God's Word. It is life changing. The Bible does not contain but is the absolute truth of God. As one studies God's Word in the original languages (in this case NT koine Greek), untold treasures are revealed concerning what the Lord has for those who believe. We get a better understanding of the mind of God, the value of life and the salvation that every soul needs through Jesus Christ. I highly recommend it.

In my early years in NT Greek I found this volume quite helpful. Every so often I still refer to it, if my mind seems to be playing tricks on me.

This lexicon lists every single word found in the Greek NT. By this, I do not mean there is just a reference for agapao (love), but every form that agapao appears in the NT. So, for instance, in Ephesians 5:25, is the word agapate. Looking up this specific word, you'll find it is derived from agapao, but that it is the 2nd person, plural, present, active, subjunctive or imperative form of the word. So this book is invaluable to the person learning Greek and for studying and translating the Greek NT.

It is especially helpful as it list words found not only in the Critical Text like many lexicons but also words and word forms found only in the Textus Receptus and the Majority Text. It even indicates when a word in a particular verse is in a different form in each of these Greek texts and when a word form only occurs in one of these Greek texts.

I purchased this lexicon when I was studying Greek at Denver Seminary. And it was invaluable in learning Greek and for studying the Greek NT thereafter. When I felt God was leading me to translation my own version of the NT (Analytical-Literal Translation of the New Testament: Third Edition - ALT), I purchased the BibleWorks 7 software program. And it provides the parsing details for words in its auto-info window.

However, sometimes BibleWorks parsing does not look correct to me. So I keep this book on hand, by my computer monitor. And in such cases, I will double-check BibleWorks parsing by this book. And sometimes I still refer to this book just for the lexical information. So even with computer software, this book is still valuable.

As a student of New Testament Greek, I find this book to be an invaluable addition to my library. Every word in the Greek New Testament is listed alphabetically, with a cross reference to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, and the Greek word's definition, location, and source. The lexicon also contains charts of the definite article, the declension of nouns and adjectives, and the conjugation of verbs. It includes information on the use of tenses, moods, and cases. Contracted forms of verbs are not listed in the lexicon, but charts of these forms are provided.

This book enables Greek students to find the definitive meaning and usage of each word in the Greek New Testament, and I highly recommend it.

I bought this book for my husband who was one of those rare men who can't grill! He has used several of the recipes in the book and hasn't failed yet! The book contains all the info that a novice needs to know about grilling, whether it be a charcoal grill, a gas grill, a smoker, or an indoor grill (like a George Foreman). The grilling recipes give instructions for both gas and charcoal- something you usually don't find. I would recommend this book to anyone who grills!

I've tried about 10+ recipies in this book and they're all excellent. You could serve this food in a fancy restaurant and charge big $$$$ and call it yours. I like it...

Back in the seventies, Silverberg really could do no wrong, at least by my estimation. Pretty much everything he did was an interesting bit of SF in its own right and often explored topics that SF didn't normally cover, or did it in ways that were new at the time. And he did this without being overly avant-garde or lessening the emotional impact of the work. "Nightwings" is probably overlooked because it was in its most famous form as a novella and in fact won a Hugo (and was also nominated for a Nebula) that year. Novellas are hard to release because they aren't long enough to warrant their own publication, so you either have to bundle them up in anthologies or piggyback them onto other books that may or may not have anything to do with the story in question. Fortunately Silverberg seemed to get around that problem by writing two other novellas to act as continuations of the story begun in "Nightwings". In the story he takes us to a far-future Earth that exists in the wake of a far more technologically advanced society that collapsed some centuries back. In this world humanity had fragmented into guilds, each serving their own purpose. Our viewpoint character is a Watcher, one of those who scans the skies in the event that we're invaded. Nobody really expects that to happen. But it turns out that everybody is wrong. The invasion, though, is almost beside the point. While it's the main bit in the first novella, what Silverberg does in the other two is deepen what we've already seen, exploring the intricacies of this new society and also how it reacts to sudden outside influence. In doing so, the Watcher sees humanity attempting to figure out if it has a place on its own planet, as well as trying to face its own shameful history that led it to this point. Its telling that for all the attention paid to the pretty flying people, they barely figure into the story, except to symbolize what most of us can't do. Silverberg manages to sketch out a fairly complex society in what amounts to very few pages, giving us enough for the big picture while letting us fill in the blanks, especially when it comes to the past history of Earth. He does this without making the novel six hundred pages and part of a larger trilogy. His prose, as is typical of this period, is sharp and lyrical, and he gives us plenty of nice mental images to take home: Pilgrims slouching toward renamed cities of our day, Fliers soaring into places most people can't go, people walking amongst the ruins of a past nobody can fully contemplate, decadent palaces and men both petty and bestial. It's fascinating and what other writers would spend entire series exploring, Silverberg nails it all in barely two hundred pages. And at the end we don't need to see more, he's shown us enough. Its impact isn't as great as his better known novels (it appears to share some of its themes with "Downward to the Earth") but the images it leaves us with of a future that is still recognizable even after everything is changed makes it one of his more notable works, and well worth giving your time to.

"Nightwings", an elegant collection of three novellas, shows the young Robert Silverberg at his lyrical best, telling a haunting, mesmerizing tale of a far flung Earth subjugated by the citizens of a distant planet once ruled by a brutal, imperial Earth. Told through the eyes of a "Watcher" - a former member of a feudalistic guild whose members were in charge of Earth's defense - the entire book works as a memorable tale of almost insurmountable loss, followed by redemption. Silverberg takes us on a magical journey through the streets of Roum (Rome), Paris and Jorslem (Jerusalem). Not surprisingly, the first novella, "Nightwings" - which chronicles the Roum adventures of the Watcher as the city is conquered by aliens - earned a Hugo Award.

The opening story of this collection, "Nightwings," is a classic: dealing with a decayed Earth, sexaul jealousy, a fascinating "guild" system, and alien invasion, it is one of the high points of the post-Golden Age era. The other two stories in the collection, while not terrible, do little more than flesh out the world. The major problem here is that "Nightwings" is avaiable in Silverberg's excellent collection _Phases of the Moon_; if you like science fiction at all, that book should be on your shelf. As such, it renders this collection somewaht unnecessary.

I am happy to say that this is the greatest book for science fiction lovers anywhere!! Silverberg has yet again astounded me with this awesome tale. Anyone who can read should read this book. :)

Long before Silverberg's Marjipoor Chronicles, there was "Nightwings."

This slim volume consists of three linked novellas that tell the story of a man who loses the woman he loves, and through one mistake, fails at his life's work and allows his world to be conquered. But ultimately, this is not a story about failure, but one about growth, renewal, love and redemption.

The story takes place on an Earth far in the future, one that has been brought to its knees by its own former arrogance. It is now a technological backwater in a large galaxy and has reverted to a medievalesque guild system. While some Watch the skies using intricate and decaying machinery, others Remember the world's history, and still others Dominate, using their position abusively where they will. The Fliers, descendants of genetically engineered humans fill the skies with beauty as they soar.

A Watcher loves the Flier with whom he has been travellling, but she loves another. He loses her in an invasion whose early signs he neglected to report. In the ensuing chaos, the Watcher becomes the unlikely custodian to a fallen Dominator and wanders the world trying to rebuild his life. He works as a Rememberer, learns the forgotten history at the heart of his world's downfall, and is ultimately purified, renewed, and given hope in the ancient city of Jorselm.

The story of "Nightwings" is simple and simply told, but it has a lyricism and beauty that make it memorable. Many of its themes resonate profoundly with contemporary concerns about cultural hubris, greed, and the growth of technology without the wisdom to regulate it properly. In the face of political devastation, personal redemption becomes intertwined with societal redemption.

"Nightwings" is a haunting and perceptive book. It made quite a splash when originally it was originally published, and the first part won a Hugo for Best Novella in 1969. It is good to have it available in paperback again.

Ralph Ellison is still alive. This novel is a typical continuation of his themes. One black man entirely locked up Underneath or Below, in the Subway maze of corridors, tracks and blind rooms is the storyteller. He is also locked up in his lost memory that he is going to recapture little by little. And what will come out of it ? A brilliant black woman, Agatha will reveal her mystery. She is the granddaughter of a black minister in North Carolina, but she is the daughter of a white man and her mother was beaten to death by the grandfather of this white man. She will deliver her child in the hands of the brother of this white man. The minister will get a tooth for a tooth, a child for a child, and the brother of the white man, Agatha's uncle, will look after her and then what was to happen will happen, even if it is a blind alley and a dead end. The white man, Agatha's father, will go away and have another child from another woman, this time white. She will die and then the father will die and the child will be entrusted to his grandmother who will come back to the father's town to find his relatives, but she ignores his real name. Fate will bring the white boy and Agatha, brother and sister, together, and the other boy, the black boy Agatha is taking care of and who is our storyteller, will become the friend of the white boy. White and black are so entangled together that they cannot be separated. The whole story takes place in the Civil Rights Movements era and the Ku Klux Klan is all-powerful in this small town of Edene, the badly-named Edene. This will dictate the events and Agatha, her white brother and her black child will get swallowed up in the hatred that goes along with KKK and the emerging Civil Rights Movement. The end will be tragic. Both boys will manage to go to New York and get lost in the Big Apple, the white one successful and the black one rejected or rather dropping out. They will also manage to reestablish a connection, communication and memory, coming back to the black boy, who is now over forty, a door will reopen of a new relation between the two boys, Mikey and Tony. The stuff is heavy, pungent and strong. The novel is interesting and quite easy to read and follow. It shows how guilt, desire and hatred are all twisted out of shape and embedded in all loving postures. Yet something sounds and feels awkward if not out of pace. It is bleak enough to be true, and yet the divided personalities, loyalties and lives are rather well shown on the black side but remain kind of schematic on the white side. The wall standing between the two communities is well rooted in white fear and hatred, but it is insufficiently rooted in the same feelings on the black side. The author seems to be overprudent to describe the hatred, not the fear, the Blacks feel in front of white injustice or rather social and historical injustice. Relations with people from the other side was just as much rejected on the white side as on the black side. This latter rejection is not entirely felt and depicted : it is too much seen as a response to the stimulus of white hatred. It is not only that : the concept of difference, uncrossable difference existed and still exists on both sides, blocking the possibility for America to see that all it represents and it has invented is the result of a constant give-and-take process between the two communities, the result of a cooperation that nearly no one has the courage to show and assume, except maybe Ralph Ellison in the most recent half century. We do not reach the concept of democratic diversity that is emerging at that very period of time (1960s and 1970s) in Ralph Ellisons's writings and thinking. A great book that deals with memory that blocks history in its loss and that unblocks life in its recovery.

I could not put this book down: it is stunning -
beautiful, disturbing, frightening: brilliant and should have won prizes. The language is rich and urgent, the characters and settings compelling, the messages about good and evil and humanity are ones that we all should heed. Read it.

Orange laughter will stay with you long after you've read the last page. Ms. Ross's journey into the main character's deranged mind is riveting. The journey down the tragic road of the segregated south turns out to be a surprising love story that I simply could not get out of my head for days...

This is a wonderful and moving book. I read an extract from it once, and made a point of getting it...and I'm glad I did! The characters are all so unique and intruiging and the writer brings you right into their world. My favourite character would probably be Mikey, the young, overweight friend to the main character Tony, due minly to his innocence and kindly ways.The story takes you round many different corners and back again without leaving anyone behind. And as with many great books, the secrets unravelled throughout will no doubt bring a smile to your face or tears to your eyes.

I just finished Orange Laughter. I can't explain why, but something abut the book edified my soul, haunted me, made me want to write, made what I know seem real ... If that makes sense...

I've read many parenting books and work with parents myself. I found this book to be immensely practical and useful. I have recommended it to the parents I treat and they have found it to be very helpful. It is a good book for the parents of toddlers and young children. It helps parents be more confident in there parenting and their right to be in charge.

This book provides a new or soon to be parent with some excellent concepts on how to handle some the many issues a new parent faces as a child grows. For many on the points, Dana provides examples from her many years of practice. You can tell the author loves her work and is open to share her ideas and values.

I wrote an earlier review which was mostly a negative reaction to the recommendation that a six month old child be weaned. The author was kind enough to point out that I had misread the passage in question: the child Chidekel was writing about was six YEARS old. I offer my apologies to Dr. Chidekel for my mistaken criticism. I did find much of value in what Chidekel has written about emotions from our own childhoods arising with regard to our own children. I also enjoyed the case study examples. I am not adding the book to my library because it was not clear enough to me at what ages the author's various recommendations should apply. I prefer John Rosemond's books.

As a child psychologist I like this book for the message it sends begining with the title...Parents in Charge. Many parents are afraid to take charge of their child and this book not only tells you how to do it, but why it is necessary. Readers gain a deeper understanding of the needs of children at various ages and how to tailor your discipline to your child's intellectual and emotional abilities at his or her age. I have recommended this book repeatedly in my practice and will continue to do so.

and I've read quite a few! "Parents in Charge" approaches discipline in a positive and creative way in which both parent and child are left with a good experience. This book taught me about not just my child's behavioral issues ... but also my own. This is a gold mine of information that every parent (of toddler to teens) should read and own.

Don't be fooled by the title. This book is not just for singles. It's for anyone looking for purpose, love, fulfillment, or a place of belonging. Patti takes you along on her personal treasure hunt as she finds all that Jesus prayed in John 17:20-26 for the Father to give to those who will become his disciples. Patti found love when she discovered that God loves her as He has loved his Son. She found purpose and fulfillment in the perfection of oneness with God through Jesus. In her journey Patti finds her new home where she belongs with Jesus in His Kingdom. Patti has found the Kingdom of Heaven and it's in her heart. In this book Patti obeys her commission to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom, and she does it by candidly sharing her own experiences in finding oneness with Jesus.

I can't begin to do justice in describing this book. Patti expresses the hearts of many women-and not just single women, either. She shows us insight into the love our Lord has for us-in such an inspiring and real way. I couldn't put this book down! Thank you Patti, for your honesty and transparency- and for inspiring the realization of our Hope in Him and how much we are loved in a very real way.

My husband and I met Patti a few weeks ago and we both fell in love with her heart for our Lord, Jesus Christ. Then I read her book and see even more how much she loves Jesus and how deeply and passionately she wants to share Him with everyone! I LOVED this book. It made me cry, laugh and feel such great joy and peace. What a loving and merciful God we serve!! Patti does a fantastic job at relating to her audience whether married or single, she teaches what is truly important in this life here on Earth and how wonderful and forgiving and readily available Jesus is to each one of us. I thank God for that canceled flight to Omaha that day so that God could bring this precious woman into our lives and allow us to experience Jesus' love and grace in a brand new way! Thank you Patti for your obedience to your calling and for what you suffered through in order to bring this book to so many who will be blessed by it. I laughed, I cried. I reflected, was challenged, and learned. I praised the Lord!! Patti Gordon's book, Press Play, is a brilliant work clearly inspired by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through His Holy Spirit. In the book she offers 14 short stories from her life that highlight our humanity and God's power, might, mercy, love and faithfulness. God has given her a wonderful(!) way with words, great insight into human needs and emotions and a growing relationship with Himself.

This book is wonderful, and a delight to read. I highly recommend it to both those who are single and those who are married.

This book was a true delight! Each night I reserved one chapter for reading despite the temptation to finish it all in one sitting. I wanted to savor each chapter.

The author pours out her heart in a way that engages any audience...not just singles. I enjoyed the book so much that I bought copies for married and single friends, as well as a recent high school graduate.

The words in this book beautifully articulate the condition of the human heart; broken and longing. The author leads you to the hope that is found only in Christ Jesus, the One who was designed to fulfill these longings. Each page drips with tenderness and transparency. What a sweet encouragment that no matter what one's circumstances may be, there lies an unshakeable hope found only in relationship with God the Father and His blessed Son!

I plowed through this book in about 2 days because I couldn't put it down. If you are sensitive at all Redemption will evoke a strong emotional response from you. If you are completely insensitive then perhaps it will soften your heart. Either way, this is a book that makes you FEEL.

Through the personal struggles of the main characters (Sol, Mirabella, Katrina, Saskia, etc...) Emma Farry illuminates the sacrifice and pain endured when people erect walls around themselves. The will to overcome and amend the past, to break down the walls and to have the strength to live life is what propels this bittersweet yet hopeful and insightful tale.

A tremendous debut that is truly written from the heart.

Ms. Farry's detail and emotions are felt through out the entire book. You are right there with the people feeling their pain and their joy...for a first time author Emma Farry is the next in line with Toni Morrison, J California Cooper the only other authors ( i think) that takes you inside the characters soul so we the reader can see the "whys".
Bravo Emma for taking us to a truth many of us foget about .

This book is a source of inspiration to us all, particularly in this time of uncertainty and questions where we struggle to understand our actions and the actions of others and what it ultimately means for all of us. I highly recommend REDEMPTION as well as VOICES OF BROOKLYN: WRITINGS FROM THE WOMEN OF COLOR WRITERS' WORKSHOP, to which Emma Farry also contributed.

A wonderfully gracious, compelling book about a families long and dark journey in search of truth and reconciliation. Will the trip back from the darkness tear families apart, as some want, or the contrary?

Cowering, evil characters, deeply intense, insane and hilarious ones, all combining somehow to help teach us some lessons.

Was totally in to it, read it in three days, not bad for a male, "sorry, I'd prefer not to read fiction if I can possibly help it".

Emma Farry's Redemption is a superbly written novel set in New York and London, about Solomon Cortesi, an ordinary man who must travel to understand and free himself and his family from a curse that has brought suffering for over a century. A powerful saga, seen and related largely through the eyes of the women who are close to the enduring protagonism, Redemption is a highly recommended tale of true hope and renewal.

Fantastic book that gives you 30-second thoughts that help you view the world and your christianity different.

I first started reading Manning about three years ago and found that he presents a very practical, life changing "Christianity" that leads one to really think about what and why you believe what you do. You will not read another author like him! He wants us to live victoriously, loving God passionately and not being afraid to show it, and loving others with a boldness. It has changed my life for the better!

This devotional book written as only Brennan Manning can write, is excellent! I read it every single day and go back to many of the daily writings for more inspiration any time of the day or night. Get this book for yourself, your friends and even your enemies. It's a "keeper!" And while you're at it, buy anything Brennan Manning has ever written. You won't be sorry.

I bought this book mostly for my geeky husband who doesn't do "recreational" reading. We both recently saw Brennan Manning in person and were blessed and encouraged. I didn't think my husband would read a full text as readily as this devotional. He is reading this book daily! My only complaint is that on occasion the comments contain deep theologial verbage without a whole lot of explanation (would've been in the longer texts?). My husband wouldn't keep reading, however, if it happened too often. A good little text if you want to get a taste of Manning's work. I prefer the regular whole texts to delve deeper, but this works for my hubby! Yay!
