The two set series is absolutely awesome! They provide detail pics and pics of actual existing garments. I purchased these two books based on other's reviews and was very pleased when I found out what was inside the pages. I return to these again and again for historical reference, inspiration and pleasure.

Purusing these two books is a delightful experience. Anyone with an appreciation for fashion and clothing created in the 17th - 20th centuries will be amazed at the care and keeping the pieces in the Kyoto Museum's collection have received. The close-up photography reveals the marvel of the handwork and creation of each design, and each piece is a wonderful representation of its era. And the price of the set was unbelievable!! All around, a wonderful find and a keeper.

I own the one volume book in paperback.
In comparing the two books side by side they are nearly identical!
But the two volume set is missing 14 pages that appear in the copy that I own! Most of the images are just close-ups of the garments, one set is a period illustration from Diderot, but some are garments completely omitted. The 20th century fashion is all complete though.
So you have a toss up choice, larger photos or more photos. otherwise they are identical!

4 out of 5 stars because of those missing pictures.

This set of books is absolutely stunning. I paid NZ$150 (around US$90)at a bookstore here in New Zealand and volume 1 alone is worth every penny of the sale price.
If you're interested in historical costume, you won't regret this purchase.

Due to the publisher not anticipating the demand for this set of books it took me just over a year to acquire my copy. It was more than worth the wait. The photography is stunning. If you have an interest in costuming

This is my first foray into N.T. Wright's literary discipleship. This is good written stimulus that will lead you to a deeper understanding of who Jesus is. This collection of Eucharistic sermons expands from the passion of Christ to the revelation of the Father's plan for true discipleship. The language is easy to read and Dean Wright uses great words and pharases to lead us further along. N.T. Wright has become one of my must read theologians.

This book, though brief, contains a treasure chest of Wright's knowledge on the life and significance of Jesus. In "Following Jesus", Wright seeks to answer the question, "Who exactly is this Jesus that we claim to follow?"

With the thought that many Christians might not know exactly who Jesus is, due to years of watered down religion, Wright uses different books of the Bible, along with personal scholarship, to extract who Jesus was and what that means to those who follow him.

A phenomenal read. Extremely enlightening and refreshing.

This is my first time reading N.T. Wright's books, though I've read an essay and heard him speak. This is an unbelievable book. The first half of the book walks through the New Testament and describes each author's view of Jesus and what it looks like to follow Him. The second half seems to walk through some of the major issues of discipleship and what it actually looks like to follow Jesus. I loved it and will go back to it again and again.

Bishop Wright is my Hero

For years I'd scoffed at Bishop N.T. Wright thinking him a backward-looking, anti-intellectual Christian with nothing to say to the contemporary world. I was wrong. And I'm glad to say this book started it all.

After reading several books on revisionist views of Jesus, I've concluded (very, very reluctantly) that the Jesus presented in "Following Jesus" is the only Jesus really worth following. Here Wright gives us a glimpse of the Jesus of the gospels, a Jesus who is the Savior of the World, a Jesus who makes huge demands on our lives and calls us to follow Him to Calvary. This Jesus tells us disturbing things about ourselves, the world, and how both are in need of repair. The good news, as Wright points out, is that G-d has begun to recreate the world through Jesus of Nazareth. In this short book of sermons, Wright shows the new creation appearing by looking at Jesus' teaching, his healings and, perhaps most of all, his resurrection. The new creation has already begun, yet it will fully arrive in the Age to Come.

This book set my heart aflame for the Christian hope. Although the world suffers and humans fail in love (again and again), there is a G-d who raises the dead, a fact that--when it's internalized--gives life its proper focus.

Thank you, Bishop Wright, for this powerful little book.

Costly Christian Discipleship

Tom Wright, Anglican bishop in England, once again elucidates in a cogent but thoroughly readable style that only he can what it means to follow Jesus. If one is a sometime Christian who does not want to 'count the cost' of what it means to 'be Jesus' to a hurting world, you'd better avoid this book. In a world full of evangelists who promise 'what's in it for us' if we follow Jesus, Tom Wright challenges us to really take up the cross and follow the Lord. As a Southern Baptist, I can't think of another theologian, of whatever denomination, that is more challenging and encouraging than Tom Wright. Buy it, but be prepared to keep your marker handy.

For more than a year, after watching a popular documentary -"The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne, I been actively trying to find out more about the "Theory" and "Principle" that support the key idea that the show wanted to bring across to the audience - that's "The Law of Attraction."

One of the key reasons for me to do so is heal my "Gout" problem, which cause me to have leg pain frequently no-matter how carefully I controlled my diet. I wanted to understand how "Miracle was created". As I belief that when a miracle had happened once, it would be happening again if the principle is well understood.

Possibly that is due to my education background as an engineering trained professional, I would want to find out Why first before I can fully trusting any simple instruction. Along the way, I had gone though many books on self-hypnosis, subconscious mind, subliminal music, visualization, intuition techniques, Reiki and some new age stuffs... These seem to help a bit here and there, but surely do not satisfy my goal.

And, after reading about the many good reviews of other readers, I ordered one to check out what's the difference between this book and the others.

To my surprise! This book is Very Well Organized from the Basic Principle start from the Subconscious Mind to the Practical and Most Effective Technique of applying its Power. And, it link-up many of the other information and knowledge that I had learn earlier on.

Besides, the author also produced some CDs to facilitate the reader to practice the lessons in each chapter... Though the script can be read and recorded by individual... I would still strongly recommend to get a copy as some of the Track come with the Metronome... for Alpha and Theta Routine... (a 10Hz and 5 Hz tapping sound in the background that help to Synch the listener brainwave.)

After some training, I intentionally tried some food that is Not supposed to be taken by people with "Gout", and my body does not have any problem with it.

Therefore, I take some time to appreciate the author.
Thank you very much - Harry W. Carpenter.

Last but not least, the application is much more in other respects in life... It is up to individual to explore.

Best Regards

The Genie within is perhaps the easiest to comprehend (and read) book written on the subconscious mind. It is written in everyday language, without much the airy fairy examples of other books on the same topic.
Further, the author does not spend 5 chapters writing about something that can be explained in 1 chapter, or even (sometimes) 1 page, and that alone makes this book stand out from others on this subject.

The Author acknowledges that the information isn't new, and that he has basically put together what he knows in a format that makes it easy to understand.

If you have never read anything on the subconscious, this (in my opinion) is the best book to start with. It will create many 'ah-ha, so that's what I've been doing wrong' moments.

That said, it does lack information in two distinct areas of the subconscious. The first one is in relation to symbols - the subconscious makes great use of symbols - anything you have an attachment to becomes a symbol, and symbols can go yet further (into the realm of fantasy) as they can do in dreams. Secondly, while he explains how the subconscious can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality (and how it can be used to set goals and program the mind), he doesn't explain that this crucial ability of the subconscious mind can be used to create new memories, which allows a person to gain more confidence in an area they aren't good at (because your subconscious mind uses past memories as a blueprint for how you react to future events, if you program new successful memories, your subconscious can use them as a guide, instead of previous encounters where you're had difficulty)

Overall, I've still given this book 5 stars because it is so easy to understand, and gives so much good information. My 'criticism' comes from reading multiple books (so far 7) on the subject, none of which contained a complete picture of the subconscious.

My 13-year old son has spent the last school year putting into action the suggestions and insight he has gained from this book, and has made such progress (in scholastics, sports, and social arenas) that I have to attribute much of this to the lessons contained in this fantastic book. I also have been awakened and am improving in multiple facets in my life.

I have added about 40 or so similar books to our home library, including all the usual suspects (Napoleon Hill, Troward, Wattles, Vernon Howard, Christian Larson, etc.), but this is such a concise and actionable book that really summarizes the practical applications of the wonderful power in our possession - a power we all have but that we have to be reminded about and not neglect it.

I highly recommended to read this book with an open mind, and you cannot help but be a better person. There is an inexpensive CD that accompanies the book, available at the auther's website that is highly recommended, too. Good Luck, and enjoy reading and learning!

If you are struggling to achieve the success that you want, then you need to do three simple and easy things: 1) Buy this book, 2) Read and learn the concepts contained in this book, 3) Apply what you have learned in this book.

The author boils it all down to an easy to learn science on how you can utilize your subconscious mind to achieve anything that you desire. This is key since I've read several books on the subconscious mind. After reading this book, I know now why I didn't succeed using other author's suggestions. This book is almost more like a fun to read manual of how to program your subconscious mind for all the success you want!

My advice to you is to IGNORE all other books on this subject until after you've read this book and applied the techniques. I have and am seeing very successful results after the first day.

Zerwick's Grammatical Analysis
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-10
This is simply a must for the student of intermediate Greek (i.e., one who has just completed his introductory grammar). Here's why I say this:

This is the ideal tool for learning NT Greek through induction. I love studying grammar deductively, that is, studying the principles and rules (a priori), but the average person will find that deductive study isn't quite enough. Even with examples, the rules tend to get lost in the heap. One needs also to gather up particular instances of the manifestations of those Greek rules of grammar as he goes in a real text (a posteriori) in order for the principles and rules to really take root (IMHO). Here's where 'the Jesuit' comes in.

As you read the NT you will encounter--invariably--forms you can't parse and words whose definitions you have not yet memorized. While having a lexicon handy, and consulting it liberally, also consult Zerwick's Grammatical Analysis and you will identify the word and its parsing. He will then possibly refer you to a section from his companion book (which you must get) called Biblical Greek (ISBN 8876535543), and it will tell you what the deductive intermediate grammars have also told you, but quickly and succinctly. By studying an intermediate grammar plus this book you wind up with a double whammy of inductive/deductive study!!

I have, in fact, only one criticism of this publication: it is not physically user-friendly. One cannot open it up and lay it out next to one's Greek NT. It's kind of laborious, putting down, picking up, putting down, picking up, when you're basically just doing the same one or two pages of text in a sitting. And it is just a little guy. When you get it you'll be like, "Oh, it's dinky!" It's real thick, though--like a little red brick of goodness. It's covered in thin red plastic for a cover, which may reduce its longevity if you're not careful. But, whatever. Get it!

Yes, in case you're asking yourself, this and the "Biblical Greek" mentioned above are indeed two of those things that are 'must-buys' for the student of Greek, imo. These, plus the BDAG lexicon (3d ed.) and Wallace's "Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics" are the bare minimum for the Greek student. Everything else is just gravy. But what do I know.

Note- Don't fret (if you are so inclined) about the fact that this is issued by Rome and that the scholar is a Jesuit. As a Roman Catholic turned Calvinist, I can tell you that it is my impression that Zerwick goes where he believes the Greek points, period. He's a true scholar, rip.

Cannot recommend this book

Review Date: 2007-12-29
This book provides a verse by verse analysis of the Greek NT. Greek words are printed in Greek letters throughout, flowed by a short (one word) definition and partial parsings. There is also coding to Biblical Greek's . So if you get one book, it would be best to get the other as well.

The information is helpful but hard to follow. There is just too much information packed in, with lots of abbreviations and notations that have to be remembered. And as with Zerwick's "Biblical Greek," this is an advanced exposition. Beginners will get lost in it. A similar but easier to follow resource is Fritz Rienecker' s New Linguistic and Exegetical Key to the Greek New Testament, The.

I only rarely referred to either of these volumes as I was working on my Analytical-Literal Translation of the New Testament: Third Edition (ALT). So I cannot really recommend either. I just think there are easier to use resources available. I present a full list of all of the resources I consulted in working on the ALT in my Companion Volume to the Analytical-Literal Translation: Third Edition, with asterisks indicating the ones I found most helpful.

It should also be noted that Zerwick's theological orientation is Catholic. This can be seen in his attempt to get around the clear meaning of Matt 1:25, where it says of Joseph and Mary, "and he was not knowing her [fig., was not having sexual relations with her] until she gave birth to her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus" (ALT3). The natural reading of this is that after Jesus was born, Joseph and Mary began having sex like any normal married couple. This is then confirmed by Jesus having four brothers and at least two sisters (Matt 13:55,56).

But Zerwick comments, "... until (the time when) but not excluding the continuation of action beyond the time indicated; author only concerned here to indicate virginal conception."

Notice that Zerwick does not give any examples of when "until" (Gr., eos ou) does not exclude the continuation of the action. But compare the other places where this Greek phrase occurs in Matthew: 13:33; 14:22; 17:9; 18:30,34; 26:36. In all six of these verses this phrase does exclude the continuation of the action after the time period indicated.

To be clear, this means the phrase indicates a change in behavior after the time period indicated. So in Matt 13:33, the woman mixes yeast into flour; but once it is thoroughly mixed, she stops mixing. Here, Joseph was not having sex with Mary; but once Jesus was born, he began having sex with her.

The meaning of the Greek phraseology is clear, but Zerwick is allowing his pre-conceived theology, not Greek word studies, to color his comments. This is yet another reason I cannot recommend this book.

After a bad experience for my wife, I bought this book for her and I. I feel that husband's should read it as much as their wives, since what happens in this office effects both. It should be a State requirement to be in every OB/GYN, office, or required reading at least in regard to Fibroids and Endometriosis,is concerned. If every doctor believed in handling patients like he does, there would have been no need for the Patients Bil of Rights.
This book is written in very simple terms and very good explanation's to every aspect of diagnosis, treatment, and anesthesia. A very honest author, with a great group of people offering advice from their areas of practice.

I've read a LOT of books on women's health - seems they are often written too casually by laypeople (with lots of anecdotes that may or may not be true). The ones written by doctors are often too long and too technical. This book bridged the gap perfectly! The Dr answered not only many questions I had, but many questions I didn't know I needed to ask. I was at first disappointed that my library system didn't carry this book -- but after I bought it from amazon.com, I was glad I had. I have some real mixed feelings about this book. On the one hands I really like how Mr. Whyte used such unconventional ways to get his point across (he uses poetry to point out the flaws in the corporate world), but on the other hand, a lot of the points in the book made me scratch my head and go 'huh?!'.
The material is very deep and even where there is supposed to be just a small, simple message, Whyte seems to make it complicated so that the meaning looks to be more profound.

Review Date: 2006-12-15
Whyte has a unique capacity to make powerful connections between the inner core that fills us with emotion and caring and the places we do our work, sometimes even at the place where our job is located, though not often. His observation that we leave as much as 55% of our true self "in the car" each day when we go in our office to work is so powerfully true. I dare say there are few among us who cannot relate to that feeling. And yet, it is the 55% of ourselves that the company we work for really wants and needs but rarely gets. Unfortunately because of the patriarchal environments that many organizations (not always corporations or even private sector businesses) create we all too often find no real fulfillment in the workplace. That is sad because I never have read any mission statements that pronounce "We ABSOLUTELY are not going to have fun or like one another around here." That makes me think that the realized, oppressives outcome are not intentional. However, we often find ourselves working in and hating very dysfunctional cultures, even if not by design. Whyte introduces the concept of hope in a effort to replace the all-too-present doubt and hegemony of the workplace. We may not be able to express ourselves freely at work but Whyte allows us some freedom to dream of that possibility during our reading of this book.

While at the heart of Help Me Live is a personal story of cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survivorship, the true beauty of the book is that the stories and quotes ring true for anybody who has been, or who has known someone who has been, stung with cancer.

I read Help Me Live following surgery and treatment for my own melanoma, based on recommendations at Amazon.com, and in the span of a week, I read it two more times, underlined the key passages and passed it along to my wife to read as well (because as surely as I had gone through all the cancer treatments, she had gone through them, too, while standing by my side!)

The book is not a how-to...because every case is different. There are no strict rules...because every patient is unique. The book is, simply, filled with the words and love of cancer victims and caregivers who share their stories in such a way so as to make them accessible to everybody.

While it would be wonderful that cancers could some day be eliminated and there would no longer be a need for Lori Hope's brilliant work, the reality is that cancer touches our lives all too frequently. In the case that it again touches my life, I would quickly buy this book for that friend and then make the phone call that says, "I'm here - what do you need?" or better yet, quietly give the embracing hug with no words.

Much More Than 20 Things...

"20 Things People with Cancer Want You to Know" is about communicating with people with cancer. Those who are healthy must learn how to take the lead when interacting with those who have or have had cancer. Author Lori Hope knows it is impossible to empathize with cancer patients and survivors when you have not had it yourself. It is her hope that this book will serve as food for thought, providing stories and examples of words and deeds that have helped and also those which have harmed. Topics include "I need to feel hope" to "My moods change day to day; please forgive me if I snap at you."

Author Hope understood cancer with years as a medical reporter, documentary producer, and caregiver. With this background, she came to understand the importance of how to ask questions. She has used this skill in creating "20 Things" with interviews with patients, caregivers, psychotherapists, counselors, social workers, researchers and doctors.

More importantly, the book is laced with her own experience, having been diagnosed and treated for lung cancer. "Though I knew my friends and family wanted to help - and most did - some unwittingly said and did things that did not make me feel better."

This highly readable book is descriptive not prescriptive. The author wanted to avoid prescribing specific words or behaviors as patients react individually, but rather, to open a world of possibilities, giving us pause for thought. "I want to describe what helps and hurts without making friends and loved ones feel guilty about things they may have said or done in the past, and without prescribing exact words or actions for the future."

Besides the "20 Things," the author's afterword is filled with extensive information geared to specific issues: stage of treatment - from diagnosis to after treatment; various cancer types; the workplace; depression: gender and age; end of life issues; and "people of faith."

Other sections at the end include:
* To doctors and health providers
* An additional list of 21 more things to know
* 16 fabulous things people did and said to cancer patients
* 12 outrageous or awful things said to people with cancer
* 26 common phrases or words that sting
* 22 things most people with cancer like and want to hear

While this book was written to help us communicate with those facing cancer, I found this book to be a useful reminder for all communications since it is a guide on how to communicate more clearly, respectfully, and lovingly.

Listen, listen and listen. By watching and listening, one can learn what a person really wants and needs. "That's what the book is about. All want to be cared for and to feel understood and respected."

Great books to help one to grow spiritually and to understand scripture as it was intended to be understood. Also great for daily application to one's life. Very good source for priests to prepare for homilies. If you want more nourishment with regard to homilies, these books are ideal.

I love it. As a Catholic seeking daily meditations, it was exactly what I was looking for. Though the price may seem steep, buying the books as a set saved me money over buying each book individually.

In Conversation with God, is a fantastic series of books that are helping me reflect and meditate on God and His love. They follow the Liturgy and give great advice on how to deepen one's relationship with God and with those around them through daily work and family life. I don't always have a lot of time to sit down and read, however with these wonderful books I can read a couple of pages in as many minutes and feel revived and inspired. These books are for EVERYONE. If you have a need to sit and converse with God and feel peace, these are the books for you. God Bless!

If you are looking to follow the liturgical year, but the Liturgy of the Hours has left you feeling like you want something more, then I can't recommend this series more highly. It is very hard-hitting, but not theologically complex. It stresses holiness, and adds praticality (not the other way around).

The author is very sacramental, very well-versed in Church teaching and the Fathers of the Church, very Marian, and very loyal to the Holy Father. He quotes scripture, Church fathers, Councils, and, of course, Josemaria Escriva. His grasp of morality and human behavior is incredibly insightful and probably comes from studying traditional Catholic wisdom in pastoral matters.

The readings tend to follow the Gospel, and even on Sundays he has separate sections for each cycle of Sunday readings (A,B,C). There is so much material here, it can provide a lifetime of reflection and inspiration.

My father is recovering from his second brain surgery in two months, and will soon begin adjuvant radiation and/or chemotherapy. I've been looking for information for him on what he can do to help the healing process from the inside. I recently checked this book out from my local library along with five others. I returned the other four, and haven't put this one down.

Brimming with inspiring stories of actual patients, facts on cancer types and treatments, overviews of alternative therapies, and many references to other books, tapes and organizations which may help you on the "journey through cancer." I know our family will be referring to this book often, throughout the journey, wherever it leads.

I have been a person with cancer since June 1998. I am one who wants answers to questions about my health all the time. Mild depression sets in when I don't get it. "The Journey through Cancer" is definitely a journey through life as Dr. Geffen states. Take one day at a time. Don't fill yourself with questions and grab for answers. His "gameplan" enables a person with cancer to deal with cancer with less anxiety and makes us more in touch with reality. How I wish there were more Dr. Geffens in this world full of cancer whose compassionate nature and an open-minded understanding about various treatments will make it easier for a patient to relate with their physician.

I highly recomend this book to any person with cancer and their families. For truly understanding what we go through physically, emotionally and spritually will make the steps through healing an easier and less stressful one. It will definitely bring about a more loving and compassionate relationship between the patient and the members of the family. Knowing about cancer isn't enough. How we accept and deal with it contribute far more to healing than all medical practices combined.

My most wonderful gift? Dr. Geffen and I communicate regularly by e-mail. I was so happy to receive a reply to my congratulatory message and through his mail, I can definitely experience his compassionate spirit. Thank you Dr. Geffen.

When I was a happy and healthy 39 years old, I abruptly became the first cancer patient I'd known, with a stage III colorectal cancer. Once diagnosed, I put together the best medical team I could. Then I found myself with many equally crucial needs for help as I entered the strange and uniquely personal terrain of my cancer experiences. How will I get through this? What does this cancer mean for my life? Journey Through Cancer provided excellent questions, stories, and tools that helped strengthen and enrich my ability to navigate through cancer. I found Journey Through Cancer at the library, and it was the sole book I found that understood that cancer patients need more than prescriptions for treatment, diet and attitude. Journey Through Cancer coaches readers through a process of discovering their own best responses to the unique impacts of cancer on our lives. For cancer patients and their loved ones, this is a must-read book.

A masterpiece

Dr. Geffen's book, A Journey through Cancer, was a revelation to me, because it showed me how MY participation in the healing process was vital to the outcome of the cancerous condition that had arisen in my body. Good as the doctors and nurses were, I soon discovered that they were most willing to treat my symptoms, that is the outer reality, but there was no inclination whatsoever to address the inner reality, that is the spiritual and emotional aspects of the patient. In most oncology centers, as far as I can see, the holistic approach is practically unknown, to all intents and purposes.

Dr. Geffen explains the basics of the disease and the treatments in very clear terms, so that we are aware of the various processes. These explanations were very helpful to me when asking questions of the doctors and nurses.

I learned from Dr.Geffen that true healing can only come from within ourselves, once we have been able to overcome our fears and denials, once we have reversed our tendencies to repress and withhold, and to view, or feel, that treatments are ordeals to be borne, instead of envisaging our whole being as coming into action in tandem with the treatments. In "The Hound of Heaven", the poet Francis Thomson says: "Fear wist not to evade as Love wist to pursue" - in order to heal, our goal should be to replace fear with love, and Dr.Geffen illustrates this in a singularly illuminating way.

One of Dr.Geffen's most compelling concepts is that of transformation: we are not at war, we are not trying to kill or destroy anything, our wish is to bring harmony throughout our bodies. There is intelligence in all our cells, and our wish is to make all of them aware of their inherent power for wellbeing and joy.

A Journey through Cancer is a masterpiece of a rare order: it is imbued with knowledge, kindness, understanding, and above all it shows that the path of healing, and eventually of being, is through consciousness.

...but every day I read this book, the meditation is timely and sometimes so relevant to my life situation that I can hardly believe it. I bought this book as a special gift to myself this year, so it is the first time I have read it, each day in order- and I can hardly wait until tomorrow to see what comes next! This book is a true blessing, a pleasant surprise, and honestly amazing at times. I will be looking forward to reading it in the years to come and plan to purchase several as gifts for Christmas presents this year. Kudos, Melody! And, thank you, for writing this very wise and insightful (and almost magical) inspirational work.

This book was recommended by my yoga teacher. I have found such peace and comfort in reading the daily meditations. This was exactly what I needed in a time in my life when I was searching for peace and acceptance. It is well written and has something in it for everyone. The stress of living is put in perspective by her observations and encouragements.

Melody's beautiful book of daily meditations invites us to go on an inner journey of self-reflection. The entries are inspiring and thought-provoking and encourage us to slow down and take time to enjoy each moment. She gives great advice on how to change the way we think about the way we live and bring more peace and joy to our heart. This book would make a beautiful gift for a frazzled friend or loved one.

I have read this book on a daily basis for over 10 years. Ms. Beattie's thoughts and feelings about life has helped me to live life in more thoughtful and meaningful ways. On rare occasions (twice), I have bought the book again to share with very special people in my life. That is why I ordered 2 books recently. One Journey to the Heart: Daily Meditations on the Path to Freeing Your Soul for my friend and one for me (my original copy is wearing out!).
