I asked a well informed friend what philosophy book he might recommend for me to read for a contemporary view of philosophy today. I have had only introductory courses in philosophy. He recommended this book and I was most satisfied with his recommendation. It is a splendid anthology that shows us how philosophy adds to our understanding of the world around us and how to think about abstract and complex subjects. It sheds light on the most fascinating subjects and it inspired me to read more on some of the topics. It covers general topics, each with about a half dozen well written article, in six chapters. Freedom and determinism, God and Religion, Morality an society, State and Society, Mind and Body and, lastly, Knowledge and science. Both sides of each argument are treated when appropriate.
I think the book does the job of making philosophy interesting quite well.
It is well organized, suggests further reading in each chapter, has a glossary, but no index.

This is a neat handbook for the beginning student of Milton's writings. Potter explains how after 1660 Milton was forced out of political life and rendered free to write for himself alone. Eventually he was given a full pardon. PARADISE LOST appeared in 1667. By 1674, the year of his death, Milton was able to find publishers for nearly everything he had written. John Dryden and Andrew Marvell were acquaintainces. Milton had been something of a child prodigy. Following chapters on biography, scientific background, political and religious background, the author deals with literary background, in particular the epic. In the epic, to give up the quest is to be spiritually dead. (What a lesson that is to us.) Analysis then proceeds of specific parts of L'ALLEGRO, COMUS, SAMSON AGONISTES, PARADISE LOST, and PARADISE REGAINED. Formal oration was the basis of a gentleman's education. In PARADISE LOST since Milton was blind, visual characterizations are absent, but the sounds of the poetry are marvellous. Artfully Satan is in motion, going from subject to object. Also, Milton uses digressions to speak in his own person. The book contains illustrations, timelines, short biographies, and other aids.

Nicolson does an excellent job of explaining some of Milton's most difficult works in easy and understandable terms. This guide would be especially helpful in an undergraduate class for those who have little or no knowledge of Milton. However, I used it in a graduate class and it was tremondously helpful in that class also.
The chapters are I: "The Early Years" which covers his education and young life along with his masques: Arcades, Comus, and Lycidas. Chapter II starts with "The Making of a Stateman" and then covers his Sonnets. Chapter III is entiled "The Major Poems" which include Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes.
Nicolson breaks Milton's works down and explains them in a clear manner, making the work easier to understand. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in knowing more about Milton and/or for the student of Milton in the classroom. Nicolson is an excellent place to begin!

St. Isaac is an amazing saint that went to Canada to preach to the Indians in the 1600s. He had many struggles and was later killed by the Iroquois Indians. He had many adventures while in Canada, and his life will be an amazing message for ages to come. This book is a great and easy way to learn about the saint. Children as young as 10 should be able to read this, and it is an exciting story. I recommend this book for everyone! What a great way to increase in your faith!!!

I purchased the Study Guide from a local bookstore the other day. It is very informative for the modern high school student, as I am. Although it is very detailed, I imagine the reader should read the poem for themselves, and interpret it to their views and use the guide as a reference guide. Somoene who loves poetry, I highly reccomend Paradise Lost as long as Paradise Regained. Both beautifully done, as I said in a previous review, "Milton is an absolute genius"

I must admit I have heard many of these authors speak on numerous occassions. They are not only powerful, but they are great role models. I would like any of them to be an influnence in the lives of any children I may have. This book is a must have for any professional working to empower teens to be all they can be.

A Book for Every Church Leader

This is a new, updated version of the book originally published by Eerdmans in 1996 (which is out of print) and now available from FaithWalk Publishing. An incredible amount of research went into this book. In easy to understand language it provides reasons for the decline in the mainline church and then gives several ways that a local church or even a denomination can address the issues causing the decline. Not only does this book deal with today's challenges, it also gives an historical context on what led to the problems in the first place. A good place to start when looking for ways to grow the church. Fascinating reading for pastors and lay people alike.
