I have read hundreds of books dealing with every aspect of Christianity, religion, theology and philosophy. I also have a degree in theology. In my opinion this book has had more impact on my life then the sum of the others I have read combined! C.S. Lewis considered MacDonald his master and I never understood why until I read this collection. It is the best, most impacting book I have ever read. It can be a hard read at times but don't let that stop you because it's well worth it! I never write reviews on anything; I have been impacted so strongly by this book I had to let everyone know how great it is and is a must read for anyone! If you are a seeker of truth and are ready for real answers in your life than this is the book for you. This is by far the best collection I have ever read. It changed my life and would wager any amount of money you will find a similar response. Don't even think about it; Just get it!!!

Alister, who had inherited but the little that remained of the land which had begrudging provided his once-mighty and still-proud clan a meager subsistence-the land known as Strathruadh-, was finding it increasingly difficult to care for his beloved people. The very land on which the village stood was now the property of a lowlander-a man who cared for neither the land nor the people, but whose sole interest lay in his investment, prestige, and prominence. The small portion of land remaining to Alister was his to farm, to nurture, to love. Oh, how he loved this hard, barren, hilly, heather-covered, wasteland. But God loved Alister far more than Alister could love the land, and, as a result, a sacrifice must be made. Alister must be made to choose between the seen and unseen; must be made to understand that ownership is not to own. God created and retains ownership of all things. We are given but a brief stint upon this earth that we may learn that which He would have us learn.
While Alister found the sacrifice far greater than he ever thought he could bear, with the aid of his brother Ian ( a man who, quite possibly, walked midst the Angels), Alister did that which must be done-obey his God, and with obedience came understanding, and with understanding, peace.
Welcome to the world of ancient Scotland, where the people appear as hard as the land upon which they live. Explore their lives, their loves, their dreams, and their hopes. Discover that which we must all eventually learn if we are to ever know true life.

For a MacDonald reader this is one of his best. It contains short stories woven in the context of a larger story complete with the "redemption" of a dying soul through the drawing to deeper waters by others within unfolding relationship. He does this better than anyone I've read. He saves me a little bit more each time I read him by drawing me to think deeper and long for the pure... the true ...the best that I can offer another human being. I bought this book (paperback)in Seattle, WA a few years at a half price book store. I LOVED IT and after reading all the stories, I sold it back to the book store!!! B-U-T I didn't realize just how unique it was and have been trying to locate a copy of it ever since!! All the stories are classics and ironically, the publisher compiled them such that all are written in first person, which normally I would avoid. HOWEVER, THIS ANTHOLOGY OF STORIES TRANSPORTS YOU IMMEDIATELY INTO THE AUTHORS' WORLD OF ADVENTURE AND YOU NEVER WANT TO LEAVE!! EXCELLENT READING FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

This is a very good book. Very very very good. That's a triple very. Very good.
In this tale, "The Annals of a Quiet Neighborhood", George Macdonald recounts in very fine detail his first experience as Parson. After reading the book I almost wondered why it was titled "Quiet Neighborhood". Sounds boring doesn't it? Well, it's not. You'll discover some of the most remarkable and extraordinary people in the pages of this book, all with a story of their own. This is one of those books that offers the reader, however, more than a merely interesting story; though it is that as well. Some of George MacDonalds most core beliefs are revealed through the voices and actions of his characters, including the Parson himself (George Macdonald, or Mr. Walton in the book). How much of the book is fiction, and how much of it actually happened, I do not know and it doesn't really say. Nor do I think it matters a great deal.
What I really love about MacDonald's fiction in general and this book in particular is how he manages to take the theology in his "Unspoken Sermons" (A great book too, in its own right), and translate it into every day situations. While "Unspoken Sermons" deals largely with the theory, Macdonald's fiction stories show practically how these truths can be lived and seen in every day life. Even so is this book. If you like anything else of Macdonald's you'll like this too. If you haven't ever read any Macdonald, well, your missing out. It's easy to see why this man had such a big influence on some of the leading thinkers of the 19th century such as C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton.

If you've never read George MacDonald ... you've never read George MacDonald. 'At The Back of the North Wind' is an eerie, almost ethereal story about a boy named Diamond and his special friendship with the North Wind. But don't be deceived by its apparently simplistic structure; around it MacDonald spins a web of engaging, thought-provoking details that can never truly be understood. There's a kind of mysterious, whispering philosophy pervading this book that makes it so unusual, so different from anything I've ever read. You can read this over, and over, and over, and still there's a bend in the road that you can never quite see around ...

This was the first book by George MacDonald I've read, but this one made me want to go out and get another to read. I read this one over about two days, and I can honestly say that I had to put it down very unwillingly. I particularly love Barbara, Richard's friend, and that she's completely free from all prejudice. It seems those around her could learn a few things from her! The end was completely believable, which made it seem as though the story could have taken place. The characters were likewise very believable which lent to a very smooth plot.

Article writer and professional audio/video/photograph restoration specialist Charles Seper presents C.S. Lewis Called Him Master: Exploring the Life & Adult Fantasy Works of George MacDonald, a thoughtful exploration of the life and works of the fantasy author that C.S. Lewis hailed as "my master", and that G.K. Chesterton thought of as one of the three or four greatest men of the nineteenth century. Chapters especially focus upon MacDonald's only two fantasies written for adults, "Lilith" and "Phantasies", providing context behind the more obscure passages in both works. Rare black-and-white photographs of the MacDonald family (many taken by fellow author and family friend C.S. Lewis) add a personal touch to this extensive discussions of the many symbolic and metaphorical themes appearing in MacDonald's work.

Someone should make a movie of the main story here because it would be a classic! Simple enough for the very young child but with heart enough for the older reader who has a heart to feel with. I like to read it to myself if I can't find a child to read it to every Christmas.

His writing style is deep and thoughtful, and always well worth reading and re-reading until the truth of what he is saying sinks in. I would also highly recommend his fictional works-especially those written for children. He was the original JRR Tolkien (Tolkien and CS Lewis were both greatly influenced by him both in style and faith), so if you enjoyed the Lord of the Rings, you will find more to enjoy in MacDonald's fiction.
