When I found out about this book, I was yet again trying to recover from another failed relationship attempt. The question I kept asking myself was "why do I keep repeating similar relationships that end in similar fashion". Fortunately, it was also at this time that I met Russell Friedman, who encouraged me to read this book and do the work. Here I am, a little over one year later, happier and possessing a greater understanding of what was standing in the way of the relationship that I desired. Best yet, after several successful and fun dating relationships, I have MOVED ON and MOVED IN with the right guy for me. Thanks John and Russell for giving me the tools to build "it" right this time. I first learned about the Grief Institute through a raido program. I was intriqued and bought this book. WOW. Many concepts I needed to learn since, as the book points out, many of us learn myths about grieving. I too learned to be "strong" where people see us happy and able to deal...when that is only a cover up of our feelings and not dealing. I also like the STERBs concept. Short-term energy releasing behaviors. I was doing many things I thought were helping with grieving, but they were only short lived. This lead me thinking "Time would heal my wounds" which we now know isn't the case.

This book helped me in many ways and I recommend it and even buy it for friends. This is a must book for everyone. No...it isn't the complete all book as nothing in life is complete, but certainly a fantastic book in the journey of life and giving you some tools to help along the way.

This was a great book. I listen to the author on a radio talk show Audrey Chapman and had to purchase this book. The execrise along with the reading really helped me get with my most recent relationship. I have finished reading the book; however, I still review certain chapters weekly. I strongly recommend this book for anyone getting over a bad relationship and want to love to forgive.

Jaylin Jerome Rodgers has no respect for women. He treats them as puppets pulling their strings whenever and however he wants and they take it. But he does have a soft spot for his children but his arrogance and bossiness is causing one of them to be just like him.

This is my first time reading Ms. Hampton's books. I read it out of sequence but I was still able to figure out what happened in the first book. Sex, drama-filled, sex and more sex. And there's even a family secret thrown in the mix.

The story is also thought provoking....how much can a person take before too much is too much?

Good job Ms. Hampton!!!

Wow! This book was HOT! I never heard of Brenda Hampton before I read this book...a book that I picked up by accident not knowing what it was all about. I could not put this book down until the end, I actually read it in 4 hours. Now that I know who Brenda Hampton is, I intend to read everything she has written...and I'm starting with the first in the Jaylin series. That man is seriously a man I love to hate. I would love to try him on for size but wouldn't want to be in a relationship with him, if you know what I mean.

Jaylin Roger is back at it again and it is "My Way Or No Way" did Jaylin get his way or did all that playin' catch up with Mr. Rogers... Does Jaylin still have his playboy ways or did he get crossed up with all those women. Did he marry Nokea or will Jaylin and Stephon fight to the end????? You will have to read this book to see what Jaylin Jerome Rogers is up too and how may more women did he add to his list. Brenda Hampton has added a few new character to the book and spiced it up with a few more twist to the story.

And the saga continues...

My Way or No Way picks up where Two's Enough Three's A Crowd left off. Nokea made me sick and although I found myself becoming frustrated with Jaylin's womanizing ways, this book is nearly impossible to put down. I was happy to see Jaylin finally come correct with Scorpio but now yet another woman has been added to the mix? Drama would be an unfit description...insanity is more like it. I need to take a few days to catch my breath before diving in to Change Don't Always Come!

Jaylin Jerome Rodgers is the light-skinned, cat eyed, brother with a net worth of over 3 million dollars and a d*** that no women can resist. This book picks up where Two's Enough Three's A Crowd ends. Jaylin is in love with two women, Nokea and Scorpio. Scorpio is the mixed breed, bodacious bodied, hot lover that he fell in love with, and Nokea is the petite bodied friend that has held him down for the past ten years. She gave him the best of everything, including her virginity.Jaylin tries to do right by Scorpio this time around but as usual his 9 inch gift has gotten him into more trouble that even HE can handle!! Will Jaylin ever change his womanizing ways and stop chasing p**** like a dog in heat? Will Nokea wake up and smell the coffee? Check this book out. I'm on to part 3!!!

Alan did a great job with this book. Not only did it help me to understand the mistakes I have made with graduate school but it also helped me to take a good look at my life. I needed help and after I read the book it was like I had a better outlook on life. The book was very easy to read. What I liked most about the book was was how the author told his story and the stories of others. It was interesting, informative, sad, and sometimes even amusing. Great Book.......Would like to see more of Alans books come out.

This is a great reference book to have on your shelf. It is honest, straightforward, and very easy to read. In fact, it took me about two hours to read. However, don't let the brevity of the book decieve you. this book is packed with advise from every thing to enhancing your application to the final defense of your thesis or disertation. Since I've been to graduate school, I can say that the author talked about every issue you will need to know about to be successful in graduate school. I would even recommend this book to students who have not finished their graduate education. It should be required reading for anyone wanting to get into graduate school.

This books feels like an abridged version of Getting What You Came For. It's very short so you can finish it pretty quickly. This book didn't provide me with the depth that I was really looking for. Also, I found the writing to be quiet poor. The author's tone was rather encouraging. He repeated several times that you do not need to be extraordinary smart to receive a PhD. He also provided lots of precautionary personal tales. After a few chapters, though, you will start wondering how many friends the author has and why they all seem to be making such terrible mistakes that eventually result in their leaving their graduate program.

I enjoyed reading this book and finding out that I have it in me to SUCCEED in graduate school. I thought grad school was only for the cream of the crop, not average people like me. I wish I would have known what grad school was like sooner because I would have tried to get in a long time ago. The most interesting aspect of this book was how the author weaved his story and the stories of others with facts about graduate school to tell a tale that was interesting, informative, sad, and sometimes even amusing. I thought the author gave commen sense advice to what seems to me most aspects of graduate school (although since I've never attended, I don't really know). Another very interesting part of this book that I haven't seen in other books, and I've been reading a lot lately, was the section entitled "History of Graduate School" This section gives you when, where, why, and how graduate school got started in general and how it got started in the United States. I could go on with other positive statements about this book, but I guess I'll cut it short and just say that, all in all, this was a very informative book and one that deserves high marks.

This definitely is a timely book with very valuable and insightful information given the current very tragic situation in the island shared by the two republics. Cambeira's intelligent focus and keen interpretation of the island's development in every sense helped me better understand especially the Dominican culture that most of us know so little about. I am sure many readers who are curious about Caribbean cultures will find this work extremely informative.
I also recommend this writer's new novel Azucar! The Story of Sugar.

This particular book by Professor Cambeira is truly a jewel in terms of its historical and cultural content and its unique treatment. Unlike any other book of this kind that I have read for its clarity in presentation. This is not your ordinary history textbook, but rather a highly personalized and lucid and informed interpretation of a community's evolution. I like how the Professor, who is Dominican, convinces the reader of his honesty. He says what many other Dominican writers don't say about our country, especially concerning certain questions of identity and the notion of inclusion in the formation of what we call dominicanidad. I also like the way Cambeira's writing style flows so gracefully. His nonfiction style is like his lyrical fiction that I found in his novels Azucar! The Story of Sugar and the sequel Azucar's Sweet Hope...Her Story Continues.

Cambeira is a wonderful writer in every sense.

I am very impressed by this unusual perspective on Dominican history and culture by the Dominican writer Alan Cambeira. Cambeira's work is not your conventional history text. It reads more like an interest sustaining novel; It also presents some cultural aspects most writers on the subject usually omit or avoid altogether. I also found a surprising side issue: the theatrical version of Mario Vargas Llosa's La Fiesta Del Chivo (The Festival of the Goat) is in production by the well respected Repertorio Espanol and has an accompanying Study Guide done by Iliana Fuentes. I see that Ms Fuentes also lists Cambeira's book as a part of the suggested reading in this regard. To me, then, Cambeira has a winner. His book is definitely worth the read. ...

Bravo Cambeira!

Everybody called Quisqueya the "Athens of the New World".
It is a country with beautiful beaches and beautiful people and a complex history. The island's ethnic mix of indigenuous, European (mainly Spanish) and African cultures and their merger across time resulted in the distinctive Dominican culture that we know today. Cambeira's passion for his native island is evident on every page. This book gave me a really different and fresh perspective from other books on the subject by other authors that I have read. This is an excellent personal interpretation that I'm recommending to anyone interested in learning about the Atena del Nuevo Mundo. Thanks to the Author. My next reading will certainly be his novel that everybody is talking about: Azucar! The Story of Sugar.

Great Southern story of a lost boy looking for home
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-03
Slow Way Home by Michael Morris is a good Southern novel with an extremely strong little boy as the main character. The author does a terrific job at capturing Brandon's anger and helplessness as he is pushed around from one family to another. Brandon Willard is abandoned by his mother to his grandparents, but when she decides she wants him back, they take him on the run. Poor Brandon is moved again and again before finally finding his way home. There are Christian elements to this book, but they aren't overemphasized. The way Brandon clings to Jesus is a strong testimony to the power of the Spirit. The episode with the Ku Klux Klan in Florida seems a bit odd, but much of the book is made up of short, odd episodes in this little boy's life, perhaps it was intentional. The one complaint I have about Morris' writing style is his overuse of metaphors and similes. Many paragraphs end with one or the other, and while some are powerful, the amount of them makes the reader immune to their power.

This is a emotional book about a child that goes through less then ideal circumstances and still manages to forgive and love. The people in this story are people that the average person can identify with. I enjoyed the unconditional love that the grandparents provide to this child. My favorite character is the the Reverand. This child is an inspiration and doesn't give up. He tries to find good in people and always give others the benefit of the doubt. It is beautifully written and heart-felt emotion in print. I am sure that you will enjoy it.

From the first sentence spoken by Brandon to the last one written by the author in the acknowledgement section, this book had me spell bound. I was lost in the world of Brandon, a boy I saw as a modern day Tom Sawyer. Having lived most of my life in New York (moved to south Florida six years ago) I enjoyed the 'old south' setting of the panhandle of Florida. There are lots of characters to savor in this book but by far the young narrator Brandon outshines them all. A beautiful story. Today I'm going to the library to see what other books I can find by this author.

Review Date: 2005-12-23
A young boy is a pawn in a custody fight between his grandparents and his broken mother. While at first it appears that there is one victor in this case, the author draws out the complexities involved in such cases and adequately shows how no one wins when the custody of a child is at stake.

I found this story to be one of heart felt redemption. While the opening scene pulled me into the book, it is the young boy's voice that forced me to keep reading. This novel is tragic, tender, and most of all very real. The writing is artfully crafted and the plot, while sometimes predictable, does not disappoint.

One of Those Odd Literary Coincidences, Part 3
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-16
In one of those odd literary coincidences two Moby Dick fans simultaneously got the bright idea of writing fictional accounts about Ahab's wife, but while Sena Jeter Naslund was writing for publication, Louise M. Gouge was writing her dissertation novel, not really expecting to ever publish it. (One assumes that the critical and commercial success of Naslund's Ahab's Wife: Or, The Star-gazer: A Novel lead Gouge's editor and agent to push her into polishing it up for publication as her third book.) What resulted was the Ahab's Legacy trilogy, of which this is the third volume.

You might think it unfair to compare the two, and you'd be right but for the wrong reasons. Naslund's Everyone Loves Una; Or, The Navel-Gazer: A Mary Sue, as I call it, is one of the worst books I've ever forced myself to finish. In contrast the Ahab's Legacy trilogy was a pleasure to read.

Similarities abound, both authors having decided that an unconventional girl was needed to win old Ahab's heart, but profound differences exist that make for interesting comparison and contrast. Thus, while Una is a laughably absurd prodigy, Hannah is simply a woman slightly ahead of her time due to an unconventional upbringing as the doted on only child of a devoted widower. While Una basks in the worship of mid-nineteenth century New England's thoughtful elites, Hannah reads their books, attends their lectures, and finds her thinking profoundly influenced by them. While Una leaps into the anti-slavery cause, along with every other trendy cause, without a moment's hesitation, Hannah agonizes for half a book over whether a widow with a small child dares to actively assist the Underground Railroad, despite her growing conviction of slavery's evil. Compared to unintentionally hilarious Una, Hannah comes across as only slightly more modern than everyone else, an all too human figure.

This third volume is about her grown up son's attempts to avoid his father's self-destructive path when he too is badly wounded during the Civil War. After having picked up the first two volumes on clearance, I was not in a huge rush to special order this volume because, my curiosity satisfied about Gouge's take on Ahab's wife, I frankly expected it to be the weakest book.

I was wrong; it is the strongest. Timothy Jacob Ahab is a "good boy", absolutely determined not to follow in his father's self-destructive path so he doesn't believe that he needs to become a Christian. His former childhood friend who blames him for his father causing his own father's death, Isaiah Starbuck, is a "bad boy" who isn't a Christian either. For awhile their shared adventures at the Naval Academy resemble countless children's books of the period, but Gouge is not writing a children's book. Though revealed in the back cover blurb and foreshadowed from the beginning, the turn still shocks, and Timothy's fall is a heartrending horror. "Moby Dick" the book, here described as a survivor's account by Ishmael rather than a novel by Melville, also plays a key role, and we get some interesting analysis of Captain Ahab's mistakes from a Christian point of view.

Note: Louise M. Gouge is a devout Christian, and Christian themes are explored throughout the novels so if Christianity gives you a rash, you have been warned. However, to her credit, Gouge does little preaching and never gets preachy.

The first book of the trilogy is Ahab's Bride, and the middle book of the trilogy is Hannah Rose.

Hannah Rose, Ahab's widow is married to David Lazarus. Hannah and Ahab's son, Timothy, stops at his father's grave in Nantucket and meets lovely Jemima Starbuck whose father died when Ahab's ship was destroyed by a great white whale. Isaiah, Jemima's brother blames Ahab for his father's death and believes Timothy is arrogant and evil, like his father.
Timmothy and Jemima fall in love, which only fuels Isaiah's anger. Then Cival War breaks out and both young men are changed forever by the experience.
Son of perdition is a powerful tale of love and hate, rebellion and redemption. Louise Gouge does a great job combining history with fascinating characters. If you like historicals, you'll like this one.

Son of Perdition is Timothy Jacob's story. He is the son of the deceased Captain Ahab. Though family and friends have upheld the honorable side of Captain Ahab's character, he has also heard the rumors of his father's last voyage and how he was blamed for the death of many. Timothy encounters his childhood friends, the children of Mr. Starbuck. This causes him to again reflect on what kind of man his father truly was. Though he has been raised in a Christian home, he must face the truth that all of us will eventually: That our righteousness is not enough in the face of a just God and that apart from Christ's perfect sacrifice there is no salvation. Beginning during the winds of the Civil War, Ms. Gouge gives her readers a peek into the soul of a young man who must face the coming war between North and South and the war within his heart. Son of Perdition is truthful about the fleshly struggles young men face without being graphic. The romance woven in the story demonstrates real love with all its steadfastness and forgiveness.

An enjoyable book.

Louise M. Gouge brings all the threads of her Ahab's Legacy Series to a triumphant conclusion with book 3, Son of Perdition. As Hannah and Ahab's son, Timothy, comes to manhood and graduates from the naval academy at Annapolis, he is faced with hard choices made more difficult by the haunting legacy of his father, Captain Ahab. The nation is careening toward a civil war over slavery, and another student at the Academy, Isaiah, the son of one of the seamen who died on his father's tragic last voyage, is his sworn enemy. In spite of Timothy's attempts to reconcile with his rival, their conflict intensifies when Timothy falls in love with Isaiah's sister, Jemima. In this sweeping tale of romance and adventure, both Timothy and Isaiah face critical turning points that lead them ultimately to reconciliation with God and with each other.

Ms. Gouge has produced a delightful resolution to this series that will keep readers enthralled to the last page. Very well done!

Through forceful, powerful, blatant, bold Calvinistic and evangelistic sermons, Pastor Jones did a marathon preaching on one of, if not the most controversial and heavily debated Sermon on the Mount; shattering other man-centered, self-centered, legalistic, antinomian, perfectionist interpretations. I have to admit before I read these sermons, I had most of my interpretations wrong. Here are some observations from what I took in. First, the Sermon on the Mount is not a social gospel where all it cares about is the actions, ethics and morale of the story. Though important, they are neither the meat nor the center of it; Christ the Preacher is. Not only is this so, but as Pastor Jones remarked in the concluding sermon, that throughout the course of it, Christ declares, I would say, both implicitly and explicitly, that he is the true giver, interpreter and center of the law. Second, no one can rightly live out the principles taught in it unaided unless one is a believer relying on the grace and power of God who enables him to do so. Third, it is not something one has to do to become a Christian. Instead, it shows what Christians should become as a result of a new gracious ruling principle in their hearts. Fourth, in some cases like turning to the other cheek, going extra miles, giving away both the cloak and the coat, loaning to those in need, not committing adultery, it is the general bigger-picture principles behind the detailed examples that was to be conveyed, not the actions themselves that are the most important. I wouldn't write what they are here, but let the readers discover on their own. Fifth; on the other hand, it involves some details which Pastor Jones beautifully expounds within the general description or principles, for example, on what the Lord's prayer means and how it is to be prayed properly with the right heart and attitude, how to determine the characteristics and signs of false prophets and professors, what it means to enter through the straight gate and going through the narrow way, what building house on sands and rock by the foolish and wise man signify and how we know which one of these categories we fall into. These are stunningly soul-searching; something critical that those of us who confess to be Christians should test ourselves with. Here is one of his quotes worth musing on what it urges us to do in regard to entering the strait gate,

"You have to go out of your way to find this gate. You will have to analyze yourself and be very honest with yourself, and having refused to hold back, say, `I am going on with this until I discover exactly what I have to do'. Here are so many who do not find this way of life because they have never sought the gate and entered in.... [it involves] fasting, sweating and praying... we must give ourselves no rest or peace until we know for certain that we are on this way."

And lastly, without trying to be simplistic, the underlying principle of it all is that it is the spirit, not the letters that matters. It is the heart, the desire, the attitude, the character and the outlook on one's life, not the actions, that Christ is concerned the most and therefore focuses his sermons on to graciously rebuke, correct and encourage. Despite his sober and frightening warnings, we should not lose heart but continue to persevere to the end to follow him for he who has began a good work in us will never leave us nor forsake us and will carry it on to completion.

This book is exceptionally rich in spiritual understanding, easy to follow and written from the heart of the author. Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones knows how to bring out the truth of God's scripture. The book is actually two volumes in one, comprised of 60 sermons from Matthew 5, 6 and 7. The sermons will challenge you to review your Christian walk in contrast to the Word of God. Every sermon presented in this book brings the reader back to the foot of the Cross of Christ for self examination. It is a very humbling book, written to the heart of those that love God and his Son, Jesus Christ. This book will spiritually enrich your walk and strengthen your relationship with Christ. If you are searching for an in-depth study of The Sermon on the Mount you will not find a better book than this one. This is not a book you will read only once.

This book on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is one of the best books ever produced by Martyn Lloyd-Jones. If you have never encountered Lloyd-Jones then you will be blessed as you read this book and discover a man with a passion for both the Word of God and the God of the Word.

Lloyd-Jones, according to John Piper, is one of the last true Calvinistic Methodist from the days of George Whitefield. Here was a man who not only embraced Reformed Calvinism but also embraced a passion for God from the likes of Whitefield and John Wesley. He not only wanted to study the Bible and teach it clearly but he wanted to give people a hunger for Jesus that would become evident in holiness in life and character.

In this book, Dr. Lloyd-Jones explores the implications of the Sermon on the Mount for the Christian. He works his way slowly through each passage giving not only the content of the passage but many points of application for your life. I would encourage you to have your Bible open to Matthew 5-7 as you read this book and even more to memorize the passage (Psalm 119:11). This is a solid book well worth the price and its also a book you will refer to again and again.

"Studies in the Sermon on the Mount" by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones brings great insight into the fundamentals of Christianity thru an in-depth look at the Sermon on the Mount. Lloyd-Jones shows a stark contrast between our world's values and the way in which a believer is called to live. To get the most out of this book than one needs to be willing to examine their heart and actions.

The best AP US review book, hands down.

I took the AP US exam in 2004, after a 2-year long AP US History class offered by my high school. I was terrified that I'd fail, but this book saved my butt! It's comprehensive, easy to understand, and the review questions and quizzes in the back are fantastic - I even saw a question from the book on the exam! This tome is intimidatingly thick, but don't let that daunt you. I studied 3 chapters per week in the 2 months leading up to the test, and there wasn't a single thing I didn't know. It could use a bit more post-1970 foreign policy information, but you can probably cover that with your teacher/textbook/class. Oh, and a whole chapter devoted to important Supreme Court cases & their significance would be great, but all that information is scattered throughout the book as well.

My AP teacher recommended _not_ writing the practice essays & DBQ, but I don't see why. Any practice writing in the style of the AP exam is critical to scoring well.

In all, if you are taking the AP US History exam (or just want a concise US history reference book!), I highly recommend this one. I still consult my AMSCO from time to time.

This book offers a better summary than the vain APUSH textbook from Houghton Mifflin which spends nearly 30 pages for every chapter gabbling useless stuffs (it always describes every president's personal characteristics. It talks too much about historically insignificant materials while spending too less for significant points). But a reader can get those summaries from any other major publishers such as Kaplan, REA, McGraw-Hill, etc. All of them have answers and some of them have explanations about them. Kaplan and REA have CD or internet support for further assistance.
This AMSCO version does not have any answer or explanation about them, or any further support besides the analogue papers. If you don't have a private tutor to point out what's wrong with your answers, do NOT but this book. What's the benefit if you answer the questions and have difficulties knowing that's correct or wrong?

Before, my Ap US History class used this big textbook that was so hard to understand. Then I got this book, and I'm telling you it's the most effieceint way to learn about history. It's so easy to understand and it covers everything you basically need to know.
I would highly recommend this book to any struggling AP US Hisotry student.

This book could easily be used as the primary source for someone studying for the AP US History exam. In fact, on the inside of the front cover, there's a table for names like in regular school books. So if you're looking for a prep book that you can use to prepare a week or two before the exam, this might not be the best choice. But if you use it throughout the year and actually read through it and do the exams, I would find it pretty amazing to not get a 5. Plus, it's written well, and is as entertaining as a book about US history can be.

Like other people have said though, there are NO answers for any of the questions in the book. Of course, the internet (google) can solve that problem... so don't let that dissuade you from buying this wonderful book.

the best for apush!

This has to be the best book to prepare you for APUSH. I found out about this book through an ap forum and read about how people read this and got a 5 on the ap exam. It's extremely straightforward with only about 30/700 pages for introductions, index, and practice exam with the rest of the 670 pages pure content and practice questions/dbq.

This book doesn't dance around American history with dumb strategies and tiny summaries like Barron's or PR. This book also doesn't try to appear bigger with a huge amount of practice tests either *though REA is also a good choice for APUSH*. It gives you everything you need to know for the exam in a clear and straightforward style.

I loved the Frances books growing up and now my two-year is enjoying them. I just read Bread and Jam to her and she loves it, especially the songs Frances sings (I sing them to the tune of Mary has a Little Lamb). I love the parenting advice in the book, too. We love the description of the lunches these little badgers unpack and eat at school. I love the quality of the illustrations and the writing. I think it's children's book writing at the best. So many books now are just plain silly!

I read the FRANCES books to my daughters (now grown) and am buying every one I can get my hands on to read to my two grandsons and my granddaughter. The character of Frances is so very human, and she has such realistic foibles that every child can identify with. Frances is a classic.

(I have no qualms about the parental roles portrayed in the book. Can't parents choose the roles they wish, and isn't the traditional role a valid choice?)

My little one is a big cat lover. Although her allergies forbid her to own a cat, this book helps her to receive a better love for them. We have many of the chicken soup books and this one is her favorite. Also.... shop for the book "The Secret" it has some footnotes from this same author. The Secret is a must for children too. Of course, we all want our children to grow up with a world of knowledge, well it starts with what us parents buy our children. Books...Books...Books.... people. Turn Off the TV's...
