Buck realizes his potential

Review Date: 2006-12-17
Gold was found in Alaska, the rush to obtain it required a strong constitution and many dogs to do the work that horses usually did in the states. The environment bread harsh attitudes. Also in the testing of ones mettle one finds their true potential.

Buck (a dog that is half St Bernard and half Shepherd) goes through many lives, trials, and tribulations finally realizing his potential. On the way he learns many concepts from surprise, to deceit, and cunning; he also learns loyalty, devotion, and love. As he is growing he feels the call of the wild.

This book is well written. There is not a wasted word or thought and the story while building on its self has purpose and direction. The descriptions may be a tad graphic for the squeamish and a tad sentimental for the romantic. You see the world through Buck's eyes and understand it through his perspective until you also feel the call of the wild.

Dalmation Press' version of The Call of the Wild is really great for young readers. It has been scaled down and follows the main points of interest in the story.

The Call of the Wild (Man)

'The Call of the Wild' (1903) is generally considered London's best work. London himself was a wild man: drunk heavily, whored, jailed, tramped, poached, prospected - the bastard son of a wandering Irish astrologer. The novel is London's reconciliation with his own feral nature - he eventually killed himself in 1916 with an overdose of morphine - but not before he produced a prodigious amount of work becoming one of the most popular authors of his age. His work is at its best seen as the conflict between animal instinct and intellectual reason, what feels right vs what you know is right.

ATTENTION ALL HE-MEN ! (and she-women)

This collection of stories, though set in the frozen wastes of the Yukon during the "Gold Rush", is timeless. As man and his technologies advance and his search for wealth continues, time-honored and primitive ways are pushed aside. London expertly illustrates this same experience through the indigenous peoples of the north and the "white" man. He makes it easy for the reader to identify with the native's point of view, and to understand the perplexity they experienced dealing with these strange new men with "fire in their blood". London puts the reader at the council fire of great chiefs, in the canoes of warriors, and in the lodges of mysterious shamans and "medicine" men. These stories are not only about man's struggle with nature, but with other men and perhaps the most difficult...himself. After reading these stories, I felt myself wanting to up and leave all traces of modern civilization behind. I wanted to build an igloo, put on a sealskin coat, and carve things on ivory tusks in front of a roaring fire!

After reading this book there were many things I liked. First of all I liked where White Fang got into a fight with a Saint Bernard. I like this because he almost killed it. Secondly I liked where he tried to bite Beauty Smith and he smacked White Fang on the head with his cane. I liked this because from then on White Fang hated him. Lastly I liked where the guy that saved White Fang gave him a good home and was never mean to him. I liked this because White Fang had a bad life since he was a cub. All in all this is a very good book and I recommend this book to every one.
