I read this book a few years ago but still recall its images vividly. The interwoven stories, foreshadowing, and imagery are quite masterful and overall present a great narrative.

A Christmas Guest was a quick, engaging, and fun Christmas mystery. I found Grandmama to be somewhat of a prude, but endearing still the same. In addition to uncovering the mystery of Maude Barrington's death the story also provides some light humor and a good message. Although it is not your typical Christmas read, if you're alright with Victorian-type novels this is one worth checking out during the Christmas season.

I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but this Anne Perry gem truly SHINES. No, it's not your average Christmas story with predictable, shopworn plot devices. But being atypical is what makes it so great. Anne always delivers a great story and this is NO expection!!!

I love her historical mysteries...she puts you right THERE...you're always cheering for the hero or heroine, and her villians are really despicable...And if you're looking for a complex character, you'll be fanscinated with "A Christmas Guest's" Grandma Ellison...

Another atypical holiday story I thoroughly enjoyed was : "Christmas Gifts, Christmas Voices" by John Allen. It's heartbreaking, it's inspiring...and if you hang till the astonishing climax, it's comforting...

Adrianne Byrd has taken me to a whole new level with her book "Controversy". She takes you on a wild journey of a sister who is a known prankerster and is familiar with overnight stints in jail for some of her pranks. Now she is ready to celebrate the divorce of her husband with her sisters. Which in turn lands them in some very wild type of situations. Lies and Love....does it mix??? There's an off the hook twist in the novel. Let me tell you, when I say my mouth hit the floor, it hit the FLOOR!!!! LOL Adrianne also uses some unique names for the Adam sisters. Michael (main character), Sheldon, Frankie & Peyton. Yep, ALL FEMALES!!!

Great job Adrianne!!!

The cover of this book totally hooked me. Handcuffs and a sexy black man! But this story was so well written and so unexpected! Adrianne Byrd has written a winner! In Controversy, we find Michael Adams, the queen of revenge schemes, is in trouble. The police think that she killed her ex.
Police detective Kyson Dekker knows the last thing he should do is get involved with a suspect. But there is a difference in knowing what's right and wrong and doing the right thing. There are more twists in this book than a wild ride at Six Flags. And just when you think you got it all figured out--BAM--another twist. Giving it away in this review would do a disservice to everyone because this book is a MUST READ!

Controversy Indeed!!

With each book Ms. Byrd get's better and better. In this one we meet another Adams sister. We meet Michael who is newly divorced a slighly bitter and wants to get back at her husband but of course it's all talk or is it? And this is where the funny, hot and crazy story begins and Ms. Byrd takes you on this ride and leaves you wanting more. Did I mention funny. Those Adams sisters can get themselves into some mess LOL! And of cours there a point where Ms. Byrd tries to get you with the tears. You get to catch up with the rest of the Adams clan and meet the sexy dective Kyson. Definite recommendation!

What can I say that hasn't been said already?!! It's NEVER a dull moment with Ms. Byrd. She pulls you in from the first page and takes you on an EXTREMELY thrilling roller coaster ride 'til the end. I read this book in 5 1/2 hours. I love this family, they are HILARIOUS! This book had me LMAO and often reaching for a KLEENEX (wiping away tears of joy and sadness). And as usual Ms. Byrd added just the right amount SPICE to this intriguing tale! The chemistry between Michael and Kyson set the pages of this book on FIRE! And just when you think you know what's going to happen, she SURPRISES you with some unexpected, but pleasant twists. If you're looking for some great entertainment, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book (the whole series). You will NOT be disappointed! Way to go, Ms. Byrd!

4.5 stars and that's about as good as it gets for 99% of literature. Book was better than the movie, and the movie was very good. Unfortunately, after seeing the movie first, albeit years ago, I couldn't divorce the movie imagery, diluting the novel's characterizations. Lesson learned: don't see the movie before reading the book. COOL HAND LUKE speaks to the past as driver of destiny, that no matter how much talent and luck, and even as master of one's own fate, past incidents and episodes can twist one onto a journey of self-destruction.

Sing us a song of freedom

Cool Hand Luke is one of those books that has a lot to say but is hard to understand. Its a novel about crime and punishmnet, risk and rewards and ultimately good and evil. Cool Hand Luke has been compared to a Christ figure (which I do not see at all) and the story to Jesus' walk and journey. I'll let you figure that one out after you read the book.

With all that put aside, the book is relatively good. I found myself disliking the character of Cool Hand Luke more than finding a hero status in him. He is basically a con man, a rapist, a murderer and a thief. He prides himself on being a glutton and at one point eats 50 hard boiled eggs within an hour. The story does have the aspect of brotherhood and the importance this can play when a man's freedom is lost.

The story utlimately revolves around the search for freedom and the forces that strive to take that away. It seems to be considered a classic novel, but that may be more because of the movie starring Paul Newman than for the book. A good, fast read but don't beat yourself up if you skip over this one.

By now "Cool Hand Luke," is of course, a legend. Unfortunately, this doesn't apply to the novel, but rather, to the well known Paul Newman film (referred to in the sitcom Cheers' inaugural episode as "the sweatiest movie ever made,").

However, I digress, back to the novel. This was Donn Pearce's first novel. I initially had no interest in reading it. Rather, I came to it in a backdoor sort of way. Being a World War II buff, I heard the good reviews of Pearce's latest effort, "Nobody Comes Back," a novel about the Battle of the Bulge. I bought it and read it. It was an excellent novel and since "Cool Hand Luke," is without a doubt his most famous book, it was inevitable that I would eventually want to read it.
It took a while, but I found a copy and I read it in a few days.

"Cool Hand Luke" is an excellent novel. The story is told in the form of flashbacks. In fact, the novel's structure is very close to Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." A mute witness narrator who records the events of a naturally tempestuous and outgoing personality in a strictly structured environment (in Kesey's book, it's an insane asylum, in Pearce's, it's a chain gang prison) and the incidents that flow from it. The one difference between Kesey's book and Pearce's is that Kesey worked at a mental hospital, but Pearce (who also has a very colorful resume in addition to being a novelist) did do time on a chain gang. So there's a definite real life experience in "Cool Hand Luke."

It's a great book. First time readers might be off put by the lack of quotes, but it's a small adjustment to make. For lovers of the movie, they will be surprised at how closely the movie follows the book. Of course, there is more characterization in the novel than the movie can give (this should be no surprise since Donn Pearce himself co-authored the script).

Still, it's a wonderful novel and is a quick read.

Leave aside the fact that Malanowski has written a totally credible scenario for DC political intrigue, with characters who are life-like composites of public figures that everyone will recognize; leave aside the fact that every fifth page you end up howling with laughter; and leave aside the fact that you can't put it down at all for the last 50 pages; at the end, I'm left feeling scared. Here we are as a society, with our powerful press, our 3-way checks-and-balances government, and the most stable and transparent democracy in the history of the planet, and Malanowski comes along to remind us that it's all for naught: no matter how advanced our democracy, and how thorough our vetting processes, our nation's fate is (and always has been) determined by a handful of individuals whose PRIVATE agendas and decisions will never be seen or known. It's the same feeling you get from reading one of Gore Vidal's "State of the Union" essays from the 1980's.

It reads fast and loose, like a particularly juicy episode of the West Wing, only there's no sacchraine ending served up to make everyone feel good. The ending is earned, and resonates as authentic and satisfying. A political satire come thriller that offers the best kind of characters...individuals who are neither good nor bad, but a mixture of shadow and light who battle themselves, and their competitors, to get to the top. It's also damn funny.

I tore through this in about four hours. Malanowski, a writer for Spy back in the golden age, creates a story about a vice-president sharper than everyone around him, who decides it's time for him to take the top job. It reminded me of the best parts of Christopher Buckley's Thank You For Smoking, but where Buckley can slide over the nubby edge of satire into parody -- like he did with Boomsday this year -- Malanowski never loses his footing. Funny, compelling and hellaciously smart.

Prior to me getting this book, I've heard so many good things about it, from other authors. I've even seen someone that actually had this book in his hand, which I've never expected to see reading. And that person is my boss, which shocked the hell out of me. I mean, my boss was actually reading it, before I was and kept telling me about it. Now if you had seen my boss, you would think he was crazy. Picture the movie that Chris Rock played in, Down to Earth, where is the old man; now that's my boss.

That shows you that Erick really did his thing in this book. Crave All Lose All, brings us to South Jamaica, Queens where you will meet Vincent, Spoon and Tyriq; Vincent loss his job with the airlines after 9/11 and is force to move in with his Aunt and mom. Erick painted a very vivid picture of how a young man can fall into the world that he has absolutely no knowledge of. The question is does Vincent stays it in or is he able to get out without committing the ultimate sin Murder. I give this novel a 10 definitely, especially if it could make my boss pick it up and buy it, it proves that Erick S. Gray has amazing skills to pen this novel. I can't wait to read the sequel but unfortunately we have to wait till sometime next spring.

Crave All, Lose All brings us the story of Vincent Grey. As the book opens, Vince is a young dude, who much to the chagrin of his father makes VERY poor choices. After his father's death, and his subsenquent lay-off, Vince enters the world of hustling, under the tutelage of his longtime friend, Tyriq.

I must admit that initially, I only purchased the book in an effort to support Erick S. Gray, who is one of the hardest grinding authors on the circuit. I never had intentions of reading the book, because I read Nasty Girls, and had mixed feelings about it. However, on a bored day, I picked up Crave All, Lose All and started reading. The book, the characters, and surprisingly enough, Mr. Gray's prose (which I usually find distracting)drew me right in.

Crave All, Lose All paints a very vivid picture of a young guy who is drawn into a world that he knows nothing about. Once inside, he realizes that while he enjoys some parts of the game, he hates others...but it's too late to turn back now. He's in, and the only way out...is death.

This is a good book, by a hard-working author. Respect is yours, Mr. Gray. I give this book 4 and 3/4 stars.

Vincent is a young man growing up in the streets of South Jamaica, Queens with his loving mother and father. Despite the guidance and lessons of home, Vincent soaked up the knowledge of the streets via his two best friends, Spoon and Tyriq. Spoon and Tyriq are getting that money. Out of a job and with obligations as a man to his baby's mama, Chandra, but most importantly to his son, hustling became a priority. Now in the game deep with priorities changing, will Vincent crave all and lose all?

"Crave All Lose All" by Erick S. Gray is one of the hottest novels I've read this summer. It was all that and then some! This dramatic and gritty tale of greed, power and lust was a very good read and I am impatiently waiting the sequel. Good job, Erick!

The story of Bobby and Jo is a psychologist's dream. Bobby is 22 and while blonde, buxon Jo is only 14, the minute they are thrown together by chance, invovled in a deadly auto wreck, it's a one-way ride with no turning back.

Alcohol-fued, the characters in this desolate, desert-hole of a town at foot of the High Sierras, pummel each other psychologically and physically. Death appears on a 24/7 call as our two untamed lovers whip themselves into a frenzy of fast, crazy rides supercharged by newly-discovered, extreme passion. Add a frustrated Madonna-looking mother who seduces her son whose wretched father appears as an immobile shadow of the wretched town pastor, a homosexual pedophile. Author John Gilmore gives us a short novel that nonetheless explodes in vibrant, bold flashes of ingenuity and sheer story-telling brilliance.

A blistering book that could make a blistering movie if Hollywood would only dare!

John Gilmore has been recognized for decades for his unsettling exposes and noir prose. One critic dubbed him "the literary Hannibal Lecter." For certain, Gilmore sets his scenes masterfully while zeroing in on human lusts and frailties. His work is often shocking but always well written. Characters are so sharply drawn we walk in their skins.

Bobby McGee is fresh out of the Army, hoping for a new start away from his dreary hometown in the California desert. The father who terrorized him in his boyhood is now an incontinent vegetable, cared for at home by Bobby's mother. His mother is
still young and attractive, plotting her escape from suffocating circumstances. Bobby's brother, Woody, strung out on drugs and alcohol, is often unpredictable and dangerous. The woman who loves Bobby is now fat, hooked up unofficially with his best friend, Clyde, the Mayor's son. His first day back, a car wreck throws Bobby together with Jo, a seductive 13-year-old nymphet.

Bobby's friends all know he's always had a crazy streak, but his obsession for Jo is out of character for him. After the accident one friend is dead and another nearly so, but Bobby's life revolves around his insatiable lust for Jo. And Jo may
not be the innocent child she seems to be at first. Law enforcement officers investigating the accident are determined to protect Clyde. Bribery escalates to incest, and then murder. And as a backdrop Gilmore drags readers into the heat, dust, and misery of small town life. As one character tells Bobby, "People are all s. o. b's. when you peel the hide off."

John Gilmore is a VERY good writer. His characters and subjects may be dark, but his prose is exceptional.

John Gilmore nearly killed me with this boiling cauldron of California desolation and despair. This is the 'Lolita' for the 21st century, and the misery, desperation and sexual obsession mingle and kick into high gear from the opening page onward. I thought Gilmore's L.A. Despair was the ultimate in disected human trials and reckless abandon, and although Crazy Streak is a work of fiction, it becomes so vivid and real one would swear they are spying on the real lives of some truly agonized and desperate characters from real life! The story of these isolated, searching and damaged souls kept me from putting this thing down but just a few times. Cinderella-from-hell, Jo Pollinger turns several lives upside down within hours of showing up bursting with volatile hormones at the windswept Gas & Eats, but her smoldering ripeness is only a fraction of what is about to rip apart this festering, decomposing cluster of shacks on the California map. Angst-ridden rednecks, car wrecks, child rape, incest and an entire spectrum of suffering and intrigue carry the reader along on a rollercoaster that rarely allows one to catch their breath. I could not anticipate ANY of the twists and turns of this white-hot story; Gilmore's brilliant originality caught me off guard every time, all the way to the shocking revelation of Bobby McGee's wounded Madonna-like mother, and the subtle but powerful ending, which I don't believe anyone will see coming. The good people and the bad all became REAL to me instantly; I felt I could reach out and touch them and imagined what they all looked like, how they moved, how they sounded and on and on. Rarely has a work of fiction pulled me into its reality, for lack of better word, and gripped my mind the way Crazy Streak did. One helluva great read. Paul Waters

A remarkable book; highly readable, the story is completely engaging and doesn't let you stop for a moment. I highly recommend CRAZY STREAK as one of the best literary offering of the year. A terrific read, hard-hitting yet poetic; very sexy and graphic but always with emotional intensity and passion. Even the incest scene! John Gilmore is one of our strong writers.

Patriot Act- Fact or Fiction?

So the Congress didn't have the guts to really curb the Patriot Act. Read "Cybercash" and see where this might lead us. Library surveillance. Sneak and peek. It's all there, and more. Government credit cards and no more cash! And unfortunately, this fiction may some day become reality.

Read the newspaper about the Patriot Act, "sneak and peak", and wire taps. Then read this book. The only thing that isn't happening- yet- is the establishment of a government credit card, but I bet that's just around the corner!
This book is scarry!

Who Can You Trust?

It's not science fiction, not distopia, and surely not "romance", but Cybercash takes the reader on an eerily possible ride into the not-too-distant future, where a President turns society upside down in an unprecedented power grab.

Imagine that cash becomes illegal and all transactions must be made with a government-issued credit/debit card. Now the federal government can check on anyone in its huge data base to know a person's complete financial situation, medical and any other expenditures, as well as his or her whereabouts "virtually" daily.

Imagine that the government sugar-coats this intrusion with tax rebates and incentives and the President lies outrageously about the reasons for this action. People finally begin doubting the truthfulness of their leader, but can they believe the "other" party's politicians? Who can they trust?

With references to the Patriot Act and even library surveillance, Cybercash is a challenging read, shedding light on today's news.

...as a matter of fact, who CAN you trust?

Our Cyber Future?

If you read novels to "escape", then don't read CYBERCA$H! You'd find yourself eerily brought back to reality with talk of libraries giving the government information on members' reading habits, secret searches of political opponents' homes, and government lies and subterfuges. But if you read novels to make you think about how people react in difficult times and to meet interesting characters-both likeable and despicable-then this is the political novel for you.

Howard deftly weaves together themes of Cyber Age fears for personal privacy and political power grabs. The characters are believable, and the reader gets the feeling that the author knows a lot about politics. The jolting ending (that I won't divulge) is a shock. Could this be the future? Let's hope not. But I know you won't forget this book.

Cybercash is about government duping the people "for their own good"- and especially for the good of the people in power. It is a novel, but not necessarily fiction!

So now we learn that our phone conversations can be monitored by the government, without our knowledge, and the phone companies don't object! And government is making sounds about controlling the Internet, the only truly democratic form of mass communication. What's next?

Excellent Sci Fi

I am 56 and have been reading sci fi/fantasy since, oh, about 10. This is one of the best collection of stories I have ever read. You'll be glad you read it. The fact of the color of the writers is interesting, but not important. I have read so much sci fi, and even taken a writing course. The bottom line - this is great science fiction.

Worthy of a Hugo.

I've long suspected there were more writers of color out there besides Octivia Butler and Samuel Delany. Ms. Thomas introduces a rich collection spanning decades. My only question is when will volume 2 be published? If you love SF, add this brilliant work to your collection.

A huge sci-fi and fantasy reader I am also getting ready to be a high school teacher of special ed, reading & English. This is a book that will go on my list of books to write lesson plans about and to make sure my students read. The one complaint I have about this book is that I'd read the Butler, Delany & Saunders already. Couldn't we have gotten new stories for this historic anthology? But other writers were a revelation to me.
A great book! Nalo Hopkinson's story about a (...)gone amuck, Tannarive Due's story about the very human side of cloning and Steven Barnes' chilling almost apocalytic picture of a modern African state after a coup are all terrific reading-- and why my students -- and you -- should be excited!

Writers of African descent have played a long and important role in the history of speculative literature, even though that's not always recognized, either in the past or today. But this book opened my eyes to how much wonderful talent has gone underappreciated until now. Often raw, but always colorful and deep, many of the stories in this collection have the quality to be compared with the masters of the past and present. As both a reader and a writer, this collection inspired me greatly.

I highly recommend it to anyone who's a true officianado of speculative literature.

This is a collection that the literary world needed badly. Typical 'speculative fiction' (encompassing sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and other literary persuasions) often features humanity uniting against common enemies or disasters. But for people of color, the alternative present or near-future utopia/dystopia in any speculative story probably won't be so rosy. Technological advancement, alien contact, or astronomical disasters probably won't eliminate prejudice and inequality, as the writers of African descent collected here show us in consistently hard-hitting ways.

The settings and themes of these short stories are uniformly fascinating and thought-provoking for any intelligent reader. As with any collection of works from various writers, the quality of the stories varies a bit, and this book does have a few bumps in the road that deserve the thumbs-down for heavy-handedness. Examples include the predictable melodrama of 'The Woman in the Wall' by Steven Barnes, or the poorly-plotted conspiracy theories of 'The Space Traders' by Derrick Bell. However, these are minor quibbles, and even these stories contribute to the sheer fascination of this book as a whole.

My favorites include the supremely moving Jazz Age vampire story 'Chicago 1927' by Jewelle Gomez, an outstanding look at the human costs of cloning in 'Like Daughter' by Tananarive Due, the creepy erotic thriller 'Ganger (Ball Lightning)' by Nalo Hopkinson, and the heartbreaking dark fantasy of 'Gimmile's Songs' by Charles Saunders. Of historical interest we have 'Aye, and Gomorrah...' from the master Samuel Delany, the groundbreaking 'The Goophered Grapevine' from way back in 1887 by Charles Chesnutt, and the very chilling 'The Comet' by W.E.B. DuBois (I had forgotten that DuBois wrote fiction, and his important stories are ripe for rediscovery). Kudos to Sheree Thomas for creating this hugely important, haunting, and illuminating anthology. [~doomsdayer520~]

This story just keeps getting better and better! What more twists and turns can the author come up with? I'm an adult and I love this Manga. It is a page turner and keeps me on the edge of my seat. What will two Kiras do to ruin the world? Oh my god!

Light and L off to uni.

The situation gets more complicated as Light is starting university, and at the opening ceremony he is to speak at, he finds he has a co-speaker, who whispers to him that he is actually L!

The cat and mouse game between them continues, and Light's father having a heart attack and the discovery of a new 'Kira' and Death Note do no make anything more straightforward. All the deviousness in this serious can certainly make your head hurt.

The Most Original Manga Ever

This is one of the most original manga ever written. Read other reviewers for great plot summaries. If you are reading these reviews your question must be, "Is this something I want to read?" Death Note, unlike a great deal of manga, you have to read. It has wonderful artwork, some of the best I have ever seen. But, the art does not carry the story, the words carry this story. In volume 1, Light finds the Death Note, and at first it seems like killing all criminals is a good idea. But, by volume 2, you begin to see what the power of the Death Note is doing to Light. Volume 3, introduces a new character to the story that complicates the story line, but in a good way. If this series was a movie it would be considered "film noir". It is dark, with many plot twists, microscopic viewing of the line between good and evil, and how that line can be twisted to suit the person doing the twisting. This manga is a thinking manga. After you finish each volume, you will find yourself thinking about it, worrying over some of the plots like a dog with a bone. think, think, think. Enjoy!
