This book is excellent. It has many Bible scriptures on several subjects, any of which you may be dealing with at a particular time. Often, the scriptures are written in the first person so that that you can personalize them and make them daily confessions. For those of us that believe that speaking God's word is necessary, and is the essence of prayer, this book gives us quick access to spiritual nuggets in every imaginable area. It is a "God send," literally.

An easy and powerful way of learning to speak God's Word. Many applicable topics to choose from covering a multitude of circumstances. Joyce Meyer comes through again.

This is exactly the book I was looking for! Received promptly and just as described! Highly recommend!

Kelly writes in a compelling way creating parallells and connections between him winning the various tasks on The Apprentice and his military experience. I like his style and his sense of taking responsibility even when things go wrong. Humility is deifinetely a trait a leader must develop!

I found the book a pleasant read and I liked the fact Kelly was talking a lot about the lessons he learnt in life and how these experiences enabled him to move on.

I grew up with some idea of what military life was like due to my Dad being in the Navy - but I must admit it's never held a lot of interest for me. Reading Kelly's book did actually shed a whole new light on what advantages military service can bring to other aspects of someone's life. The principles that are discussed in the book (Duty, Impeccability, Passion, Perseverance, Planning, Teamwork, Loyalty, Flexibility, Selfless Service and Integrity) are all really worthy reading for anyone in business and the military slant I found surprisingly gave it more bite and interest.

This is a great book that draws comparisons between Kelly's military service and his rise through the entrepreneurial ranks. I know Kelly personally, and he is not only a successfull businessman, he is also a devout humanitarian. Highly recommended!

I recently purchased "Take Command" for a college course. I chose this book because I am a fan of the television show "The Apprentice." I could not have picked a better book to read before I graduate and re-enter the business world.

The ten principles that Kelly Perdew learned while attending West Point can be used by anyone who wants to get the most out of life. Duty, Impeccability, Passion, Perserverance, Planning, Teamwork, Loyalty, Flexibility, Selfless Service and Integrity. I plan to use these principle's to be a strong leader in everything I do.

I always wondered how I would have handled military training. Kelly details how physical strength is only a small part of it.
I was very impressed with how Kelly got into West Point, as well as what it took to graduate. His business experience explains how to handle a loss and come back and do things better. The experience this guy has at such a young age is unbelievable!

If you are just looking for a college, read this book! If you are graduating and looking for a job, read this book! If you have been working for ten or twenty years, read this book! "Take Command" includes great stories about Donald Trump, Ross Perot and Marsha Evans to name a few. This book will teach you to be prepared for anything and to perform well under pressure or during a crisis.

Kelly Perdew details how the ten principles became second nature during his military training. Anyone can learn and use the ten principles. If you want to challenge yourself to be a strong leader in business and life, "Take Command" will put you in a position to succeed.

This book by Apprentice winner Kelly Perdew is a worthwhile read. Written in the style of many military-business leadership books, it swtiches back and forth between Perdew's Apprentice exploits and anecdotes from great military veterans turned business leaders. The stories about Perdew's career, Apprentice tasks, and about others are both inspirational and entertaining. I am giving 4 stars because he talks about principles, but does not go deep into the reader's application of them.

Nevertheless, this is a worthwhile read for both the Army or corporate officer.

I have recommended this book to everyone I know!!! I am listening to it again! Even my 15 year old son listened to it and enjoyed it.

I am so thankful for this book. It puts in perspective what is eternal and what is temporal. I bought the audio and started last year to listen to it but because the topic was about the final goodbye, death, I freaked out and put it away. Just a few weeks ago I decided to hear the whole book. It spoke! and Spoke to me and reminded me again that people was more important than material things, jobs, ministry activities and etc. I am listening to it again to keep my focus on eternal things.

I bought 3 books as gifts, the book has been read by several of my friends, and I'm just waiting for my turn to read it!! I've not read
it myself but the others LOVE it! It causes them to reflect on the
importance of life and those in it that they value, as well as the
unimportance of the material things in their lives.

While some of the concepts in this book are similar to those in the Purpose Driven Life, this book is far better. Ortberg does an amazing job of putting things into perspective and helping the reader realize that there is much more to life than material things, specifically relationships (with God and with others).
He recites stories that capture the heart while proving his points and illustrating ways to implement the concepts he's introducing.
This book has impacted my life in a way no other Christian book has. It has changed the way I think and they way I act and react.
I am planning to buy another 6 copies to give to friends and family.

When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is a book on life by John Ortberg, a Presbyterian pastor. His argument is thus: you will die, and when you do, you will lose all the stuff you have. Therefore, instead of focusing on things you cannot keep, focus on things you can.

Ortberg says that the object of life is, as Jesus said, to be rich toward God. Pleasing God is part of this; part of it is putting a greater priority on personal relationships. This also turns out to be the place where we find true fulfillment. Ortberg's main target is those who say they will work less and spend more time with their families "when things settle down." His message is this: things never settle down until it's too late.

The book is written with an amusing game theme. Ortberg borrows a lot of anecdotes from a lot of different authors, which is fine. He gives credit where credit is due. Ortberg has a surprisingly good sense of humor. Sometimes his jokes are pretty corny, but on the whole he seems like a funny guy. My only criticism of his writing is a small one: several chapters tend to run a little long (the reader has gotten the point and is ready to move on).

There is criticism due the publisher: on nearly every other page, there are excerpts from the text blown up in boxes on the same page. Perhaps this is done for those flipping through the book in a shop, or for those who skim, but for the actual reader, it is incredibly annoying and distracting.

On the whole, When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is an accessible, engaging, humorous book on Christian living and eternity. This is obviously a Christian book, but the theologizing does not get heavy-handed, and Ortberg does not beat the reader over the head with the Bible. It can benefit any Christian as well as some who are feeling unfulfilled.

Teaches about the etiquette and customer service of selling on ebay for beginners. Even if you don't enjoy all her personal stories you come away important tips.

This book gave me the knowledge and courage to start selling things on e-bay. In an interesting narrative, Ms Dralle gives helpful hints and insights into what she sells on e-bay and why she thinks it sells. I'm glad I bought it and I bought several of her other books after reading it.

I keep it for reference. Sure I may never find the exact items she lists in her book - but I may find something by the same company.

What an entertaining book!! I couldn't put it down! Each story shows that you just never know what treasure you've found!! Whether you're a ebay seller, garage sale shopper or Mom looking for a quick read, I HIGHLY recommend this book!

This book was so much fun to read! It was not only informative by providing details from the purchase of "who would have known" merchandise to the end of the re-sale of the item, it also shared personal experiences and valuable tips. A great mixture of entertainment and inspiration! LOVED IT!!

If you've read Emmett Fox's interpretation of "The Sermon on the Mount," you know that he sees the bible as a series metaphors and poetry, as well as an account of the life of Jesus Christ. No problem. But if you're in need of a daily spiritual word, this is not the book for you. His daily readings are very much geared toward the intellect and not the emotional or spiritual. I kept it on my bedside table and read the daily entry for about two weeks until I realized I was thinking too much. Try "God Calling" for daily, concise inspiration. This is more intellectual self-help with a slash of the Spirit.

This book, a daily reader, is on my nightstand to stay. I have had it about 6 years now. The profound truths that exude from each page are truths that I must constantly be reminded of and that is why this book will always be at my fingertips. It helps to anchor me, center me, ground me and as one reviewer wrote here "align my thinking". Whether you buy used or new, it will become a well used book. I have an older hard cover edition.

For those using this book for daily spiritual exercise, it may be helpful to have a Bible at hand as well. On certain days of the year, Fox, the author, instructs us to read a certain passage in the Bible and then the page for that day is a commentary on that Biblical passage. He doesn't do this for every day, but, there are some days that you will want to have your Bible close at hand as well.

One reviewer here wrote that he starts each day by reading the page for the day in the morning. Certainly this a great way to use this book.

Somehow, I got in the habit of reading it at night, when I go to bed at the end of the day. Either way, the book will serve its purpose.

This book of daily devotions contains unpublished and published works including selections from The Sermon on the Mount and Power Through Constructive Thinking. There are poems, prayers, scriptural passages and their exegesis. The theme is personal transformation and the practice of the presence of God. The main theme is that there exists a power that can liberate the captive and transform one's life for the better. This power of being is the Kingdom of God within (Luke 17:21), the power indwelling in consciousness. It is the invitation of Psalm 55:22 - Cast your burden upon the Lord.

The text begins with an explanation of Isaiah 9:6, the attributes of God as Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. God is Spirit and we must worship Him in spirit and truth. The seven main aspects of God's nature are revealed as Life, Truth, Love, Intelligence, Soul, Spirit and Principle. Compound attributes consist of 2 or more of these, for example Beauty is made up of Life and Truth whilst Wisdom is a compound of Love and Intelligence.

Much information is given on the concept of scientific prayer, which is the practice of the presence. When confronting a problem for example, it is wise to think about God instead of the difficulty. The book is highly inspirational and uplifting and an antidote to spiritual exhaustion caused by wrestling with religious dogma and doctrines. I also recommend Alter Your Life by this author and The Hidden Power of the Bible by Ernest Holmes.

This book has helped me so much over the past 10 years and I just purchased these for friends of mine who are just beginning their spiritual journeys. It is an easy to read daily meditation book with wonderful insights that will grow and stick with you through the years.

This is an excellent scholarly biography of Augustine of Hippo. Peter Brown gives a thorough and balanced treatment of all of the important aspects of Augustine's life, thought, and historical context. I personally used this book as my set textbook for an independent study course I took on St. Augustine when I was attending university.

Brown does a very good job of summarizing important philosophical and theological concepts that are central to understanding Augustine's significance to the history of Christianity.

However, despite my very positive appraisal of this book, I feel that this might not be the best choice for people making their first entry into Augustine.

Augustine's is a severe and forbidding character. His intellectually rigorous reasoning on(and harsh views of) salvation and grace made him an inspiration to Calvin and the Puritans. But gloomy though his view of human nature might be, Augustine was intense and passionate, a theologian and philosopher with a poet's sensitivity to natural beauty and the use of language. This books puts the reader in Augustine's mind and life: there is the young man dedicated to an idealistic pursuit of truth,surrounded by admiring friends and family; later, his imposition of that truth on the all-too-human structure of the early Christian church will be fraught with challenge. Augustine knew Rome and Roman Africa in their glory days; he died as Africa fell to Vandal invaders who would impose a century of brutal rule. Peter Brown brings the tumultuous period in which Augustine lived fully and comprehensively alive; he makes us one with a brilliant, uncompromising, surprisingly compassionate human being.

This a revised edition of a very good biography of St Augustine of Hippo. Although I am in the mist of reading this bio I find the writing inviting and histology very well done.

As the first 19 reviews here have thoroughly described, this is the definitive bio of Augustine. (What Bainton once was for Luther). The 2nd edition is a whole new work.

I met Peter Brown in Princeton, where he taught, a few times, and he just oozed brilliance. I have nothing new to add except an anecdote that tells it all. The story goes that Brown was so focused and mature that he came to the idea of writing this definitive critical bio of Augustine while in his early teens. He focused all of his energy on it, methodically begining to maste the secondary academic literature on Augustine before even beginning his university studies. He wrote this bio shortly after completlng his undergraduate honors thesis, publishing it to rave reviews in his early 20s.

This story has made him a legend. And once, Dr. Paul Rorem of Princeton Seminary told us, he asked Brown about it. Brown laughed and told an even more amazing one. Turns out the truth is that Brown had not developed any special interest in Augustine until the end of his undergraduate studies. Being pressed for a thesis topic, with a deadline approaching, he picked Augustine almost at random. I really like the fact that they have information week by week about what you and the baby are going through. In addtion they have comments from mother's for each week. A lot of the time these comments are contradictory which helps to illustrate the point that every pregnancy is different and what you are going through is normal for some. I'm in my first trimester and i've read the first 14 weeks thouroughly and looked through the rest of the book as well. I like how the sections are split up and the sections at the end such as the "is it safe?" section are great. There are benefits to other books as well - one is that some of the information, such as information on specific symptoms, is talked about throughout the chapter and so it may not be as easy to search for answers to specific questions in these areas. However, I've really enjoyed this book and I think it's a great reference to have.

I flipped through a bunch of books (and someone gave me What to Expect When You're Expecting). But The Baby Center's Guide had the most meat of those I looked at. I'm the type of person that wants the facts written in intelligent terms. The rest seemed "dumbed down" in comparison.

This is hands down the best pregnancy guide I've read. "What to Expect" is alarmist. "The Girlfriend's Guide" will quickly make you neurotic about your weight. The 2004 edition of "The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby" is organizationally muddled. This book, however, is wonderful and everything you could ask for in a pregnancy reference guide.

The week-by-week pregnancy descriptions in "Essential Guide" are informative enough to satisfy your curiousity about what's going on with your body and your baby's development, but not so detailed that you feel creeped-out or overwhelmed. The tone of the book is never preachy or anxiety-inducing. The medical info is largely up-to-date and tailored to common American health care system practices. And there are helpful sections on "making the most of your changing look." Bravo! A superb resource I consult often and would recommend to any pregnant woman.

This book was well-thout out, put together clearly, and features input from mothers at each stage (week) of pregnancy, which really helped me understand that everything I was going through was normal (and scientifically explicable). I'm a childcare provider and 1st time mom (now 16 months old), and I recommend and buy this book for all of my pregnant friends (even dads-to-be should read it).
Trust me, you won't be disappointed! I had 7 other pregnancy books given to me by friends/garage sales, and they all were terrible, common sense type books. Even the "What to Expect" series is so incredibly overrated...I have no idea why! Buy this book and you won't regret it. Oh, and you're welcome to check out my wish list on Amazon that I share with my expectant friends and family. I researched forever before deciding on each item and have nothing but terrific things to say about each one!

Baby Tales: A Pregnancy Companion By Maurice Woodson is an impressive and welcome selection of inspiring, endearing, thought provoking tales of pregnancy and childbirth. The stories range from a single paragraph to a few pages in length. Sometimes they are gentle and heartwarming, sometimes they convey experiences of tragedy, but overall they give the reader a profound message of hope and showcase the importance of bringing new life into the world. Highly recommended for expectant parents, Baby Tales is very easy to pick up and very hard to put down!

I found this book to be very uplifting, as well as
entertaining. I enjoyed the different stories and experiences. unlike most tech books, this book doesnt preach...It describes and portrays pregnancy as it really is. I applaud M.S. Woodson for getting it right.

This book definitely keeps it real! It's not one of those pregnancy books that are so filled with medical [jargon] that you don't know if you're coming or going after you read it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant, thinking about getting pregnant, knows someone who's pregnant and anyone who can say the word pregnant.

I almost didn't buy this book because of some of the reviews. I agree, I thought the book was kind of expensive for what it was so I bought another book instead...then I came across this book in a store. I skimmed through it and really enjoyed what I saw. I bought it and was glad that I did. Babytales: A Pregnancy Companion is a great book and worth the five stars it recieved. My friends and I enjoy reading it together during our lunch break. I must have read it three or four times. If you are pregnant and want to know what it is like to experience pregnancy first hand, Then you will enjoy this book. I'm a nurse in a maternity ward and me and four other nurses are all
pregnant at the same time and the one book that we all enjoy is this one. It is definately worth the price.

This book would be an invaluable asset to have handy to anyone who reads a lot.It is a large book ,1144 pages.It is the type of book that will be turned to frequently when you come across something in your reading that you would like to know a bit more about without going to a lot of trouble or checking a lot of sources. The book covers a lot more than literature and authors. It is an encyclopedia in every sense of the word.For instance ,if you have never heard of an author,or a book,that is mentioned somewhere ;there's a good chance that here you will find enough to serve your needs.However;if you do know the author and his works ,you will probably basically know what is in this book.
Although most of the reviewers are very "well read";don't assume this is not the book for the "ordinary reader".I consider myself in that second group;and I can vouch that it is very down to earth and jam packed full of information,usable for everybody,regardless of their background or knowledge.
I must also warn you that when you pick it up there is a great tendency to flip around it from one thing to another. It is no problem to spend an hour or more glancing through it. It is also the type of thing that can be left around for anyone to pick up,open at a page at random;and they will find something to interest them.
It's difficult to say what all's in the book;because it covers all types of things other than literature.

Artists are covered.I found it interesting that max Ernst is included but not M.C.Escher. We get definitions such as epigram,epilogue,epinicion and epiphany on Pg.325.A flip of pages to 1020, and we get a short explanation of the Thirty Year War,mixed in with authors and book titles.
What I've been trying to convey is the wide range of entries in the book and that it covers much more than literature and authors. It is a bit of a guess what you will find;but that is part of the enjoyment you will getfrom this book.You'll find "whore of Babylon" but not "The Butcher's Apron".The Pulitzer Prize winners are all listed.
I could go on forever;I'll quit now,as most readers have gotten my pointby now.I hope so,anyway.
If you buy this book,or buy it for someone who reads a lot;you'll never regret it.

This is the kind of work which when first dipped into leads to the temptation to dip into it more and more . The sheer amount of information is so great, the entries so various in subject that endless delight is to be found in learning more and more. There are however as with most things, a few problems and limitations.
Take for instance the opening entry of the Encyclopedia, the entry on 'Aaron'. We truly learn important things about Moses' brother and mouthpiece. But for anyone who knows Biblical literature not to speak of its commentaries, the entry is a shortcut of shortcuts. And thus misleading. For it does not tell of Aaron's role as leader of the Temple ceremony worship, does not explain his connection with Moses in a deep way, nor even mention their sister Miriam, does not tell of the death of Aaron's son in offering up strange fire, does not tell anything about Aaron's role as ' man of peace beloved by the people'. One of the great farewell scenes of world- literature Aaron's climbing to the top of Har Ha-Hor is not mentioned.
I take this one example to indicate another simple truth. An encylopedia of this kind is always best on a subject one does not really know much about. Then anything we are told , adds to our knowledge if not necesarily our understanding.
In checking out a number of articles I did not find ' inaccuracy' here. In confronting other subjects I knew nothing about I did have a sense that I was getting reliable information.
This is again a good tool and source for attaining first knowledge of a subject.
However if one really wants to know and understand the meaning of a particular subject my recommendation would be to supplement this work with other sources of information.

I love my 4th edition and am glad I've kept my 2nd edition as now I have the best of both worlds. New info in 4th and the deleted info in the 2nd. The only thing I would do to improve the next edition is go back to the alphabet tabulations.

He drove an ambulance during World War 1, before becoming one of America's most famous novelists. Who wrote "Death of a Salesman"? Who wrote "Manhattan Transfer? Who created the character, Sherlock Holmes"? Holden Caulfield was the main character of what famous novel? Who wrote "Catch-22"? These are just some of the questions that "Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia" can answer. Bruce Murphy's book offers biographical notes on writers, synopsis of famous books, plays and poems, descriptions of characters and detailed explanation of literary terms and movements.

I have had my copy of Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia since its publication in 1987 and have found no better reference tool for writing research papers and for general literary inquiries. Although "Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia" is over-due for a major facelift, it continues to be a valuable tool - I keep my copy at arms reach along with my copy of "Oxford Companion to American Literature", by James D. Hart.

I purchased this for myself my second year of college. Being an English major especially interested in the Modernists, it soon became the most used volume in my bookcase. A fantastic quick reference when crunched for time and excellent for understanding those oh-so-esoteric literary allusions. It's wonderful, with references for historical and artistic events and movements, novels, epics, authors, poets . . . a must for any lover and/or student of literature. This would make a fantastic gift, too!

The first time I read this book was in 2001, and it made a tremendous inpact on me. It's about an English woman in her early twenties being called to go to Hong Kong and start working among the drug addicts in the so called "Walled City". A couple of years later she met someone telling her about the importance of speaking in tongues, and she started praying in tongues 15 minutes each day. She had been talking to people in the "Walled City" about Jesus from the time she got there, but after 6 weeks of praying in tongues each day, the people she was talking to started believing what she was saying and received Jesus. She also saw that there was no way the drug addicts were able to get off drugs, if they didn't imediately started praying in tongues. "Each had his fascinating story and all without exception came off heroin without pain and trauma." This book is not only a story about what happened to Jackie Pullinger, but also a great teaching about the power source we have on the inside of us. Before she started praying in the Spirit she said: "Lord, I don't know how to pray, or whom to pray for. Will You pray through me - and will you lead me to the people who want You?" All of us who are baptized in the Spirit and received the gift of speaking in tongues can say the same thing and then start using what He has given us. We have "dynamite" on the inside. Let it "explode" each day, and people around us will want to have what we have!

I LOVE this book so much because it is one woman's testimony of what GOD did & is doing with her-through her.

My wife and I could not put this book down as we read it together. It is filled with excitement as the author battles against opium and drug abuse as well as every other kind of demonic evil. In every case, she wins the battle for the souls, minds, bodies and spirits of men and women in Hong Kong. There is one victory after another as men and women are set free by the power of God's Holy Spirit. We highly recommend this book for those seeking release from drugs, alcohol and demonic bondage.

Finally, a woman follows Jesus with ALL her heart. Then, she lets Him teach her how to win the desperate and depraved that she has been trying to do without the power of the Holy Spirit. She receives the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, follows advice to pray in tounges 15 minutes a day and miracles start happening. She has lived by the Lord leading her already, but now she shifts into high speed Holy Spirit action. Mostly boys and men are saved, delivered from (Satan's kindom into The Kindom of God,) are baptized (in the sea,) and are given a prayer language, usually immediately upon conversion. Then follows healing and deliverance from herion and opium addictions through prayer. She is often catnapping in buses and on ferries because she is available day and night to help these guys. She helps many women too, but it is men whom she really has an impact with.
