New genetic technologies and their promise have led to much debate, much of this mired in not just technological but ethical and moral issues - and key to any college-level collection where technology issues are central is REPROGENETICS: LAW, POLICY, AND ETHICAL ISSUES. Papers discuss all aspects of emerging technologies and treatments, surveying regulations, political influences, licensing, policy development, and more. An essential reference, this also will extend into classroom discussion and debates.

One of my favorite classics. The relationship between phineas and gene is complex. One of the better examples of life not being black and white but various shades of gray.

The Bible Guide is the most informative book I've experienced to date. It's well laid out, very easy to read while being extremely enjoyable. This is the only book worth buying in my opinion and believe me, I've seen plenty of Bible guides and none of them even come close to this book. You'll need only two books in your possession - The Bible and its counterpart, The Bible Guide.

Great content, visuals and very easy to read. Very good resource for new Christians keeping in mind that this is a summary from one perspective. You may not agree with all conclusions, such as Adam and Eve not being the first humans, but the author does not shove his view down your throat. All claims should be verified or dismissed using your own Bible version. Great Study tool.

A Separate Peace

Review Date: 2002-12-04
John Knowles' A Separate Peace is a great book about trust, betrayal, friendship, and finding your true identity. The book, set in 1942, at the beginning of WWII for America, shows a great deal about trust and friendship at that time. Through out the book we see the actions of two friends and how one trust the other in such a great way that he forgives the other for literally ruining his life ( Finny forgiving Gene for making him fall from the tree ). It really shows the bond that friendship meant back in the early forties. Also there is a lot of betrayal and distrust in the story. For example Gene starts to get it in his head that Finny and him are in this competition and it drives him so far into anger that he hurts the person who really cared and trusted him. This shows how the human heart is naturally distrustful, and shows how much humans read on into something farther then needed. This book is a very provocative example of the stages that people go through to get to who they truly are, their true identity.

It was hard to get into it in the beggining. I had to start over about three times after reading five pages and not knowing what i had just read. But, it did get better and more gripping. it was an interesting story that delt with real things people could go through. Overall it was pretty good.

A deep message

A Separate Peace is a book with a deep message for all the people about the real meaning of friendship, values and consequences of the World War II in American teenagers. It is easy to read, because Knowles places the time and settings with a particularity as he knows how to do.It is sad and dramatic story, however you learn the real meaning of FORGIVENESS with Finny and Gene friendship. We really recommend the book, but it is necessary to get time and patience for a good comprehension of the message that Knowles wants to transmit it. Give a chance and create your own opinion about the book. We give it four stars, thanks Mr. DeMaria!

Critical Look at A Separate Peace

A Separate Peace provided great reading pleasure. It provided insight into the 40's, and also showed the pain of growing up during a war. I featured was, however, lacking strong female characters, nor did it give any true insights into the charactor's emotions

A Book of Amazing Depth and Clarity!

Set in the 1940's, A Separate Peace takes the reader into the world of Devon, a boarding school on the East Coast, and into a world where the reality of war is imminent. The book itself has nothing to do with that war, and yet everything to do with it. From the first page on, Knowles presents a realistic story (perhaps even a sad one) with hints and moments of hindsight, as a thirty-some year-old Gene, who attended the school in his youth, tells the story. And while the narrative never quite takes us to the war itself, the entire theme that Knowles presents is intertwined with the very being of World War II.

Furthermore, while that conflict rages on around the world, back at Devon, a teenage Gene and his "best friend" Phineas are struggling with their own battle: Human nature. Phineas, himself, learns personally that the truth hurts, but how far does it go?

A Separate Peace is chalk-full of life-long lessons and a truth that runs deeper than we might want it to. John Knowles is a terrific author and this book is proof.

This easy to read book is just the ticket for a long plane flight or just kicking back in the barkalounger and taking the weight off.
The author does a really nice job of telling his story to the fishing and non-fishing reader in a style that is folksy, down home, and just the right amount of sugar. After reading these stories, I thouhgt that when it comes to my turn to write my story, that I can make the presentation accuratly, mend across the fast water, and finally catch and relese my reader.

an unusual, clever, and fun angle on contemporary art
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-22
The editor/curators of this book got 50 contemporary artists to each write down instructions for a do-it-yourself art project, for the reader to try. Each is a small revelation of the artist, and a thought-provoker in itself. It's intelligent and fun -- a very clever expression and extension of contemporary art. It's just the thing for anyone who wishes they were artistic: you read an entry, and have the curious sensation that, not only is the project something you could do, but it would be an actual participation in the contemporary art world, pre-endorsed by prominent artists and curators.
