The lust for illegitimate power

This is one of Shakespeare's plays I have liked best so far (I still have several ones left to read), along with Hamlet, King Lear and Julius Caesar. It is the tragedy of ambition and delusion, and the fatal results of those two vices combined. It is also one of Shakespeare's plays in which the supernatural has a greater participation. Just as Hamlet is driven to revenge by a ghost -his father's- Macbeth is driven to desperate ambition for power by three witches who tell him he is destined to occupy the throne of Scotland (way back in the Middle Ages). Though Macbeth is not a very resolute man and so has many doubts, his inescrupulous wife jumps in on the prophecy and pushes him all along. She must be one of the dreariest women to have appeared in fiction ever. You can imagine her truly as the mother in law from hell. Together, the Macbeths perpetrate a series of treasons and horrible murders, and even start up a war, all for the throne they will, of course, never enjoy. As always with Ol' Billy, the dialogues are incredibly strong and magnificent, full of passion and energy. The scene where the ghost of Banquo appears in the middle of a dinner is more than spooky, horrifying. This play is pure evil, violence, disaster and remorse, and the final transformation of Macbeth is necessarily too late, but worth contemplating.

As a lover of Shakespeare since high school I have a fairly large collection of Shakespeare books, audio cassettes and videos, and I regularly visit the festivals around the country. However ALL is surpassed by my One Page Book of Macbeth. When I opened the tube and unrolled the play, I was blown away ... it really is the whole play on one page. I took it to Deck the Walls to have it framed and now it sits in pride of place in my study. It works as a work of art and I can just walk up to it, look for familiar lines. I love it. I will eventually have the whole collection, if I can find enough wall space!!

It's such a great idea and I would recommend it to anyone, whether you're a Shakespeare scholar or just someone with a casual interest.

I tell you, if your short of ideas for a Christmas, this is definitely something different.

This is a dated but seminal book on sustainable development

This is one of the few books, along with Careless Technology, Silent Spring, The Limits to Growth and others that really clarified the approach of humankind to nature. It is not a critique of modern technology or society, but an early and valuable presentation of the ecological consequences of human activities throughout history. I thoroughly recommend this book to any students of environmental studies or development issues.

Research on effects of prehistoric humans on the ecosystem.

This is an excellent, thoroughly readable collection of scientific studies concerning the role of prehistoric humans in changing the ecosystems they inhabited. The studies range from the extensive farming terraces of China over 5,000 years, to the possible creation of the Great Plains grass ecosystem through Amerindian burning for hunting purposes. Although somewhat dated, this book provides a scope of research that will not be found anywhere else. I read this book thirty years ago during my Anthropology graduate studies at UC Berkeley, and have never forgotten it. I am very happy to see it in print again.

I live in England but, do you know, I've never followed the activities of the royal family. It's not always something special when you've grown up with it all your life, and they've done much to let themselves down in the past 20 years, the poor souls. So I've never followed Prince William and, really, know nothing about him. That is, I didn't until I read this book. I was at O'Hare airport in Chicago, flying back to England, when I saw it in at the bookstall. Something made me take it off the shelf - I've no idea to this day why - and it caught my interest as I flicked idly through the pages. I immediately liked the writing style - it's very descriptive, but not too much: it's artfully done. Why, for just a few bucks I got to learn more, much more than I ever thought I'd want to know about William. But I enjoyed it! It's quite a rollercoaster story, and an amusing though pretty accurate insight into British life and culture, written by one who should know - The author biography says that Mr Buskin "is a British journalist". It shows. (It also says that another of his books, about Princess Diana, was a New York Times bestseller. That must be one heck of a book - I'm already looking out for a copy.) I think Buskin must be a pretty savvy guy, and he certainly writes a witty line reminiscent of the British Carry On films. For example, I think he had tongue firmly in cheek when he wrote: "And so the stage was set: His naughtiness was about to evolve into Dreamboat Willy."

This book is written for all ages.

The author promises to let the reader know: " Why William was know as 'Billy the Basher,' How he coped with his parents' troubled marriage, What he does for fun and excitement, Why his former nanny is now his closest friend, and How he feels about being popular with girls all over the world." Richard Buskin does accomplished these things. However, if one has kept up with the Royal Family, then, one know everything in the book and much more. Princes William possesses many more nicknames than just 'Billy the Basher.'

Despite this, the book is well-written which one can not say about many of the books written about Prince William. This book can be appreciated by adults and not just gushing teenagers who are crazy over Prince William. It's easy reading and can be easily read in an hour.

Richard Buskin has written several books about the Royal Family - Diana in particular.

Prince William has had to grow up rapidly considering the events which have taken place in his life. As everyone knows, the world is on the verge of a new millennium, and for William, the twenty-first century king, it appears to be there for the taking. There are many picture of Prince William from infancy to the present; however, there are no new ones.

Since the death of his mother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, Prince William has grown into a mature young man, and whatever the future holds, the eyes of the world will certainly be on Prince William.

This is a paperback book which contains 159 pages and measures 4x63/4 inches.

This is a great text! I homeschool and have been pleased with it! It's challenging but not overwhelming. Our curriculum uses this as their text, but my 4 year old isn't enrolled in K. I felt he was ready for it and it's going very well.

What is so wonderful about this book is that it contains explicit directions for reading activities that support the learning theories presented. It's not some esoteric treatise on reading problems, nor is it difficult to implement the activities described in this book. It also is progressive, so that more basic reading problems as well as higher-level problems are addressed equally. Furthermore, Crawley has also included some great hints on how learning can be supported in the home. On the whole, it is one of the most practical resources a reading teacher can have in his or her library.

Crawley and Merritt have produced a book that can be used by both classroom teachers and parents who wish to improve the reading skills of poor readers. The book covers topics from helping children attack words using simple phonic skills to adjusting reading rates for older readers. Each topic includes a description of the reading skill and then a myriad of activities, games and techniques that can be used to improve reading in that skill area. Illustrations make the activities easy to read and create for children. A must for anyone working with readers who need help.

Shakespeare a la Gide

Andre Gide's concept of the mise en abyme which has become a wide-ranging and controversial tool in literary understanding is deftly applied here by Mark Taylor to four of Shakespeare's most complex plays. Although the theoretical background is French and thus somewhat elliptical in expression, Taylor's prose is fresh, clear, and a pleasure to read. Difficult matter gracefully communicated.

No Limitations on Shakespeare's Imitations

Review Date: 2002-09-29
As an open partisan of Mark Taylor's scholarhip, I was delighted to find that he has outdone himself in SHAKESPEARE'S IMITATIONS. His prose sparkles with a bravura wit truly inspired by the verbal and structural play of Shakespeare's own invention. SHAKESPEARE IMITATIONS tackles the best of the best: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, HENRY IV, PART 1, HAMLET, and THE TEMPEST. With great yet unassuming erudition and with an unflagging perceptiveness, Taylor pursues the kaleidoscopic question of Shakespeare's mirrorings of antiquity, of contemporary literature, and of his own creations. Even on the rare occasions when I find myself disagreeing with him, Taylor's arguments compel a re-thinking of these four great plays and a renewed appreciation of the infinite capacity of Shakespeare's (to say nothing of Taylor's) imagination.

Sams' argument has not been accepted by the 'academic establishment', but in my opinion the case which he makes in this book that "Edmund Ironside" is an early Shakespeare play, is very strong.

Ironside is absolutely a (lousy) "Shakespeare"-play

Review Date: 1999-05-15
The idea that the author of the Shakespeare-folio suddenly started writing masterworks is at last proven to be nonsense. Eric Sams makes the case for Edmund Ironside being an early Shakespeare-play so masterly, that only the very stubborn (& the very stupid) can harbour any doubt after reading "Shakespeare's Lost Play". All the same, "Edmund Ironside" stinks, and should (I hope) never be performed on stage. But this monstrosity is fascinating reading-matter, written by a very young and unexperienced bard, who started, just like any other normal being, his professional career not simply by being the best, but at the bottom, by trying - and failing many times. It makes the author of Shakespeares works almost human! This book shouldn't be missed by any serious Shakespeare-student; Eric Sams shows how authorship can and should be proven - and how opponents should be silenced. That Sams apparently completed this study without the benefit of a computer opens new horizons for humanity!
