There is a lot of depth in this book the content is so powerful. After reading this book I felt inspired to look at life in a more positive way. I can't wait to see what this author will come out with next.

I found this book to be interesting the author of this book tells his life story in poetry. It was very skillfully done there was never a dull moment. He tells about his struggle coming up out of the ghetto escaping the street life through souful poems. I highly recommend this book!

THE VIEW FROM A DISTANCE
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-19
William Shawcross is a good reporter. But in this biography he faced one problem: he knew his subject only from a distance.
His account of the Shah's illness and his final agonies is excellent because it is based on extensive interviews with the doctors who treated the exiled king.
The rest of the book, however, suffers from insufficient research and analysis.
Many of the Iranians interviewed by Shawcross told him either what he wanted to hear or what they wanted him to hear. He had no means of checking their claims by cross-examining other witnesses and/or digging into Iranian archives.(Obviously closed to him).
Read this book as a medical account of the Shah's final days. ( You learn a great deal about the type of cancer that finally killed the Shah!) But for a deeper analysis of the Shah's politics, and some speculation about his eventual place in history, go to Marvin Zonis's " Majestic Failure."
And if you want a critical, and at the same time sympathetic, Iranian view go to Amir Taheri's " The Unknown Life of the Shah" which reads like a modern version of a Greek tragedy.
I also recommend the Shah's own " Answer to History" which, although self-serving and at times annoyingly dishonest, neverthelkess , provides much insight into the soul of that complex and misunderstood man.

THE GOOD THE BAD & THE UGLY IN A UNBIASED MANNER
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-28
This book is superb, It tells the good the bad and the ugly in a fair unbaised manner which is rare for books on Iran. This book gives excellent insight onto one of history's most misunderstood figures, The Late Shah of Iran. Interviews with all the major players in the last days of The Peacock Throne. One disapointment Shawcross does not really delve very solidly into the Mossadegh era and the Shah & the CIA's role in helping the Iranian Air Force restore him to the throne. All in All, if you are a interested in the life and death of the Pahlavi Dynasty and want a fair and unbiased autopsy then this is your book

I've had this book for a while now, I would guess it to be written at a teenage level. The photographs are interesting but usually well known, if you collect much British Royalty material you will already have most of them. I do like it better than the video Prince William: Behind the Headlines.

Very well-researched, with a wealth of primary source material (perhaps too much!), this book is quite academic and dry. Rather than a traditional biography, the book is more a study of various aspects of the reign of Edward VI (e.g. policies on religion, economics, land use, etc.) first under the leadership of Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, and later, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. I did not feel that I really learned anything about these three figures as people. "Fans" of Tudor history, having read a biography or two of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, are likely to be disappointed in this book. It is much more geared to the historian with a serious, even professional, interest in the period.

An authoratative study

This book represents a comprehensive and conclusive study of an important Tudor figure. An academic study of a less well-known English monarch, this book is a fitting epitaph to a leading historian of our time.

The second book of a trilogy is always difficult, but MacAvoy does a good job as she continues the tale of Nazhuret. I really like how she develops the maturing character of her hero. He finds the truth of his heritage and begins to understand & connect with both sides of his background. The book has much to say about love, loyalty & loss in many permutations. I just reread all three and Book 2 certainly holds its own.

Pleasant, nothing special

Much like the first book in this 'Lens' trilogy, 'King' is well-written and has one or two fairly interesting characters. Unlike 'Lens', this volume has a plot.

Once again the center of the novel is Nazhuret, reducing everyone else to stick figures. The character of Arlin stays in the background. For the purposes of this book all you need to know is that she's a woman and she'll fight for Nazhuret. Nothing else. The most intriguing character, Powl, is hardly seen.

MacAvoy makes some baffling character decisions. The eunoch whose name I can't remember at one point appears to be in love with Arlin...but it's never revisited. It's never relevent.

I suppose I don't care for MacAvoy's writing. The dust jacket shows several rave reviews for these books. I just don't see it. I can't fault her mechanics, only the intangibles.

Robert Stephens chews scenery magnificently
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-18
This is a terrific version of Shakespeare's play, starring Robert Stephens as the wicked King Richard in a deliciously "over the top" performance. Audio book lovers should take heed: this is the *unabridged* play, on three cassettes and clocking in at approximately four hours! And indeed some of the more formal lamentation scenes do tend to grow tiresome (but that is a feature of the play and not the performers' fault); however, the vitality of the Richard scenes amply outweighs this. The supporting cast, including Glenda Jackson, Dame Peggy Ashcroft, and Cyril Cusack, is uniformly excellent, but top honors must go to Stephens. The recorded sound (digitally remastered from a 1967 recording) is very good. Highly recommended.

A bit over the top, but well done!

Stephens is a bit much as Richard (does he have to yell so often?) but the supporting cast, with Michael York in a multitude of roles, Dame Peggy Ashcroft as Margaret, Glenda Jackson as Lady Anne and Jeremy Brett as the Earl of Clarence (for once, the part is done right--Brett comes off as believable, not as a whiny brat as in many portrayals) is fantastic. Unabridged, as another reviewer noted, and digitally remastered, this recording is the best I've come across so far. Highly recommended!

When we study God's Word we have a responsibility to take it seriously. For some this means investing many long years in Theological Education. For others this means locating and utilizing the proper tools which help us to plumb the depths of God's Word in their original languages. Dr. William Mounce has created a valuable tool for helping to study the New Testament in its original language.

In the past interlinear Greek New Testaments worked from the Greek to the English. This approach proved cumbersome and unnatural at times. Dr. Mounce has reversed the order. This reversal is based on the simple fact that today most people's minds are more comfortable working from the English to the Greek.

Also, for those more advanced in Greek the parsing tools are a great help. This book is a solid addition to any library. However, it more than likely will not remain on your shelf!

good, with caveats

This book is a great idea and useful tool for aiding one's efforts to do word studies. Using this one can go straight to the Greek-English concordance in this Zondervan series and study the usages of the word, and armed with the Kohlenberger-Goodrick/Strong's number, one can use number-keyed lexicons like Thayer's, Vine's, etc. (though these are not the most recent and accurate lexicons).

However, the Greek word order in the Greek NT is a very significant part of the author's style and meaning, and because the Greek text here has been rearranged to fit the English translation (NIV) word order, the user of this volume will not be working with the NT Greek text as it was written.

This volume makes it much easier for the non-Greek reader to be able to find the corresponding Greek word and then do further research. And, the parsing information is very useful -- it eliminates the need to buy an analytical lexicon, and saves a step in one's word study, i.e., one can go straight from this volume to the Greek-English Concordance and then, armed with the lexical form of the word, to a Greek lexicon like BAGD/BDAG. But one should also have a regular interlinear at hand to see the actual Greek text word order, to see which words/elements the author has "fronted" or emphasized.

Also, I think that a more literal word-for-word translation might lend itself better to this kind of reverse interlinear than the NIV, but I know this volume is part of Zondervan's complete student library of Greek language tools based initially on Mounce's popular grammar (which I learned from). Since Zondervan owns the rights to the NIV translation, all their Bible study tools in this (and other) series use, by default, the NIV text.

I am looking forward to Mounce's book on GREEK FOR THE REST OF US (due March 2003), which supposedly complements this book.

Shakespeare can be tough--tough, but well worthwhile---and this book does a good job of presenting Shakespeare in a manner and form that is not overpowering to the reader....

Provides just enough insight and history to aid the reader in understanding, but doesn't overpower the reader with unnecessary "book learning." The real impact of Shakespeare, however, is in the play itself...this book adds to the play and doesn't detract from it by an overpowering explanation or presentation.

Good effort. Barbara Mowat's work is always good.

I ordered a number of copies of this book -- the New Folger Library edition of Richard II -- for use by members of a Shakespeare reaeding group in Tbilisi, Georgia (that's the country, not the state), most of whose members are not native speakers of English. For this purpose the Foger edition, with notes on the page facing each page of text, was very useful -- more useful, I think, than the Arden edition, whose critical apparatus is very copious but often gets in the way. And in a few cases I found the Folger's notes more accurate and informative. Harry Berger's concluding essay, however, is not so good. It argues a thesis that I find somewhat implausible and one-sided in its reading of the play, so especially for the new student it is not very useful. But coming at the end of the text it is easy to ignore.

This book is a good reference for those who works on erosion and sediment control. Needs more information concerning the type of construction necessary for erosion control, because this book touches this subject faintly. I rate it 4 stars because all other information is covered extensively and clear. My interest in this book was for erosion control, but when I tried to look for the information, I was dissapointed. But comparing this book to other similar references, this is the best you can ever find.
