The Protestant Revolution is a very important and powerful book. It provides a carefully researched narrative of Christendom from Martin Luther to the present day. This history enabled me to understand how christianity - when disseminated and discussed - became the liberating force that has changed the world permanently by placing an ultimate responsibility with each person. Fantastic stuff! To my mind this is the best book about christianity yet written.

There is a pressing need for protein for millions of people around the world. Rabbits are an alternate source of animal protein and can be raised in areas of limited space, with little capital startup. They can be raised on a diet consisting largely of forage, plants, and shrubs. This book gives basic information that has shown to be successful in a variety of situations as it relates to raising domestic rabbits.

Other books in Christian Veterinary Mission's Raising Healthy Animals series include Raising Healthy Horses, Raising Healthy Cattle, Raising Healthy Poultry, Raising Healthy Pigs, Raising Healthy Goats, Raising Healthy Honey Bees, Raising Healthy Sheep as well as Drugs and Their Usage, Zoonoses (Amimal Diseases That Affect Humans) and Christian Veterinary Mission's most popular title Where There is No Animal Doctor.

On the morning of 17 January 1885 a devastating fire swept through the clerk's office in King William County, Virginia. When it was through, that county joined the ranks of "Virginia's Burned Counties" and a treasure of genealogical information was lost to researchers. The earliest five Record Books, which cover the period of the county's formation to the beginning of the nineteenth century, exist only in a fragmentary state, with huge gaps within the series. But they still provide a rich source of genealogical information. These were primarily deed books, filled with family references and relinquishments of dower, and an occasional odd marriage contract or prenuptial agreement. Occasionally, reference give information aside from the dry forms of protocol. Such was the case with William C. Pemberton, who signed over his property in 1805 in a deed of trust to Samuel and James Edwards because... "being sensible of the great propensity which he has to gambling and being sensible also that by indulging this propensity he may involve himself, his wife and children in inextricable difficulties, if not total ruin, two tracts of land, one of 230 acres and the other of 275 acres together with household furniture, horses, stock, etc." (Record Book 3, pg. 310.)

The current compilation contains over seven thousand references to individuals in this burned county. It should become a valuable reference for researchers in eighteenth century Tidewater Virginia genealogy. Oftentimes, land purchases were made by individuals outside King William itself, and there are numerous references to relatives from Kentucky, North Carolina, and purchasers in the new nation's capital transferring title in this county. Anyone with early landowning colonial family in the region will welcome this study.

Breathed there ever a man more villianous than Richard III? Iago, maybe, but they are in a class by themselves. Evil, evil men...

Richard III, as a play, has stood the test of time. It is one of Shakesapeare's best, though his characterization of Richard is subject to question since he is/was writing in the time of a Tudor monarchy, the family that assumed the throne because of Richard's "evil deeds." Shakespeare, as Sir Thomas Moore before him, may have been playing to the Tudor monarchy rather than dealing with the truth. (Remember Jack Webb's standard line in the TV series, "Dragnet?" "The facts, mamn, the facts, nothing but the facts..."

We may or may not have the facts here as they pertain to Richard III, but we have a damn good play presented in the best possible manner: the original numbered text on the left hand page, modern up-to-date language on the right hand page, making it easy for readers of all ages, from the junior high school student reading Shakespeare for the first time to an old-timer, a retired guy reading Shakespeare for the umpteenth time, to understand and appreciate the Bard and his story. And, true or not, what a story it is!!!

An A+ to Shakespeare and to Spark Notes' No Fear Shakespeare concept.

The life and reign of Robert the Bruce

I purchased this book on a trip to England in the mid 90s and find that for its 20 pages and compact size, it provides a wealth of information of Scotland during one of her most difficult periods, during the reign of Edward I (Longshanks). Inside front cover has a map showing sites of battles in the war for Scottish independence. Robert the Bruce took Scotland from a vassal kindgom of England to a country able to stand on its own, beginning with the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. This book makes history enjoyable and brings parts of Braveheart into focus. A superb read for any student of Scottish history, young or adult, in a school setting or home schooled.

This out-of-print book from the 1980s remains one of the only authoritative books on rum history. It isn't comprehensive, but it collects a wealth of basic research on the histories of various caribbean rum producers. The general history at the beginning is still a good, if incomplete, read.

For a student of language and culture, aside from the scholarly comparisons, reading poetry and lyrics in Czech alongside the English translations can be pleasureable in itself.

From Chapter III, First Influences of Russian Folk Poetry in Czech Literature. The Poetry of Vaclav Banka:

(Unable to reproduce diacritical marks in this font, sorry. Also, this website defeats my attempts to layout the poetry in its proper verse sequence and arranges it into paragraphs. To je skoda!)

Vecer sedech dluho sedech do kuropenie sedech; nic dozdati nemozech vse drezky, lucky sezeh. Usmuch, sniese mi se ve sne, jako by mne nebosce na pravej ruce s prsta svlekl se zlaty kamenek. Kamenek nenadjidech zmilitka se nedozdech.

Last night I sat, long I sat, Till the cockcrow I sat; I waited for nothing, I burned all the kindling and embers I fell asleep and dreamed: As if from me, poor girl, From the finger of my right hand Someone took my golden ring, Pulled off the precious stone. The stone I did not find; My lover I was not to see.

Bill Kings new book, Saving Face, gives the reader a real insight to the events that formed Bill King's politics and personal positions. It is an inside view from someone who lived through the Savings and Loan debacle and survived to tell about it. It is a good read, especially the last chapter, Lessons Learned and the Epilogue offer an interesting glimpse into the thinking of a person who has given a great deal to his community and community service.

A Phenomenal sequel for an exquisite play!

Who says that sequels never live up to the original? Part 2 of this trilogy does just that! Immediately, Shakespeare grabs us with Gloucester's understandable fury at King Henry VI. This is soon followed by York's conspiracy to seize the crown himself. Later we are offered some comical touches with a false miracle. Some chilling pagan prophecies also grab our attention. Also Later, there is the hard passage where Gloucester uncovers the treason of his wife and later stands trial and is found guilty of crimes he is innocent of. Later his corpse is discovered. Shakespeare does not stop here! There is the chilling triangle between King Henry VI, Queen Margaret, and her lover Suffolk. King Henry VI is at his best in the trilogy when he banishes the vile Suffolk and faces down his queen. The scene where the delirious cardinal confesses his guilt is a scene of horror followed by Henry's touching forgiveness. The rebel Jack Cade simultaneously offers comedy and horror. His death at the hands of Iden is artfully drawn. But Shakespeare does not stop here! The War of the Roses actually starts. The demonic Richard III actually makes his first appearance in this play. The icing on the cake is yet to come. Clifford's father is killed in the war, and Young Clifford offers a sorrowful, terrifying, and yet beautiful passage on his intent for revenge!
