War!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-06
The title of this book is kind of misleading; it would be more appropriate to call it WAR!

This book does detail War Against the Pure--specifically in the Silver Crusade chapter. There it details Harmony loss and how to mitigate it, serving under a Lune, and additional Gifts and Rites. It also give you an idea of how to space and time everything, because as in any war you are not fighting all the time. There are Klaives and other assorted sundries to be found here as well.

Before this chapter there is a chapter that deals with War against any opponent: other supernatural denizen, changing breed, Pure, or the Forsaken. This book is very useful for storyteller's and can assist players in detailing background information on a character who has seen combat. Following this chapter is a great little historical setting/chronicle ready to run with npc's and background details that gets snuck into the book--more bang for the buck and it's a cool setting to boot.

The final chapter is really where this outstanding book really brings it home by giving you the capability to create your own changing breed complete with your own historical (or not) concept that is useful for both st (storyteller) and player. A great way to keep players on there toes and keep things from getting stale or to frame the Forsaken in a new light by contrasting them with a new changing breed of your own creation.

Another Excellent book in a long line of them in this setting. You should own this.

A Pathetic Train Wreck
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-15
Where do I begin with this garbage masquerading as literature? I'll first start out by saying that it was so successful because rapper "sister Souljah" relied on the fact that her audience would mainly be a very young and/or undereducated and unprivileged one (the same group that thinks "Gangster" Rap is high art) which she could easily manipulate and dupe. This is one of those "Crime doesn't pay" stories, in which the vast majority of its space is spent glorifying violence, corruption, and wanton sex before a moral is thrown in to justify its existence. This genre has been around for decades starting in the comic book form, so this novel is hardly innovative in that regard. About the story itself: it was tightly-plotted in some places, but quite boring and stagnant in others (especially during the first two hundred pages and in the middle). It was also far-fetched- an offense that is always an insult to my intelligence. The main character was just too young (17) and made to be too ignorant to analyze like she did and have such ambition. She was too young to have had formal meetings with her father's criminal lawyer. The character was, in fact, someone in her early-to-mid twenties, but obviously made a minor so that the entire Girl's Home subplot could exist. Much of the book's conflict depends on the fact that she's forced into the home, cut off from her family and friends. Another insult is a subplot in which her imprisoned father expects his mistress to hand over tens of thousands of dollars to help out his ailing wife. Why didn't the father (constantly described as super intelligent) give money to his trusted right-hand-man to hold, instead of entrusting it to a greedy, unkind woman? Why would a right-hand-man described as so loyal to the father voluntarily abandon the jailed man's devastated family- especially when the police had nothing on him? If you've (unfortunately) read this book and have half a brain, too, you realize how utterly stupid that all was. But it was obviously done to create cheap suspense and "Sister Souljah" knew that the illogicality of it would fly over the heads of her dumber readers.

The worst thing about this book was that it was an example of Eurocentricism at its finest. "Sister Souljah" placed her main character on a pedestal by constantly reinforcing that she was fair-skinned with long straight hair. Her father was placed on the same pedestal- I guess him being rich and all-powerful wasn't enough to set him above other African-American men. And yet the author had the nerve in a (very pompous and self-serving) afterword to be surprised that so many readers ask her if the family was black, wrongly assuming that it is because of their Spanish surname. This is how deep-rooted colorism is in the blacks' psyche (yes, even ones who claim to love black so much they hate whites like this rapper). It's so deep-rooted they don't even know they're doing it. Furthermore, the father's Puerto Rican mistress with "hair down to her butt" gave him the only son he had always earned for, and in return got wealth for life. His brown-skinned wife, conversely, turned into a "bald, ninety-pound crackhead". The character so black that he was called Midnight was a genocide refugee and the victim of homosexual prison rape. This rapper/wannabe novelist shows that not only African-American men practice colorism like so often whined about by African-American women. Lastly, I was disgusted by how "sister Souljah" went out of her way to dehumanize crack addicts, first by constantly calling them "crackheads" (Gee, I wonder why no one ever calls methanphetamine addicts "crankheads") to throwing inside every stereotype about them from being emaciated to filthy to mentally insane. Never is the flip side shown. Never does she attempt to explain WHY most people try it in the first place or that some hold jobs, raise families, and that some are- GASP- even America's wealthy. All of my life, I have seen firsthand that drugs affect people from all walks of life in varying degrees. Read this sensationalized mess at your own risk. I know that I regret the day I picked it up. Should've re-read Lucky by Jackie Collins instead.

This is an excellent read. Well written, you actually feel for the characters. I think after this book was published many of the "urban" novels started popping up trying to tell the story of life in the hood. This is actually good though. Talks of it being made into a screen play with Jada Pinkett Smith involved.

Review Date: 2008-07-17
I just finished the coldest winter ever, and i must say that it was one of the most captivating books I've read in a long while. i couldn't put it down til i was finished taking only short breaks to snack. i had to find out what was going to happen next and how Winter was going to get out the predicament that she was in. The end of the book however was slightly disappointing i wanted more, i wanted there to be happiness, the fairy tale happy ending. Although all the loose ends were tied up i felt as if there should have been something else, the ending left me wishing it was different. I wanted Winter to get what she wanted in the end, and ultimately the events leading to the end were so sudden, the book was over before i had time to put everything together in my mind. I only hope the long awaited squeal with fill my need to know what ever happened to Winter Santiaga and if she ever did turn out right.... On the other hand i suppose that Sister Souljah couldn't have gave Winter the happy ending i so hoped that she would receive. That would simply defeat the purpose of the lesson she was trying to teach. Everyone always want the protagonist to come out with everything they were striving to succeed but Souljah didn't do that. Which is another reason why i think her book was and is one of the best books of our time.

The book is a quick and enjoyable read. A lot of the financial advice in this book seems pretty obvious, but many people have no concept of saving money, working hard, and living frugally. The book also mentions that you should invest your money under the advice of wiser men so that it is working for you.

Overall, the book delivered its message very clearly. I would also recommend it for teenagers, since it contains excellent principles to build a good financial mindset upon.

I just finished this one. I think this is one of those little books I'll be referring to over and over again. Clason's book is one of those that you can read in an evening and remember most of the key ideas. You can put these principles to work in your life immediately. This is probably the best 6.99 you can spend.

Not much to think about...just do it.

Here's the bottom line. This book is one of many books on principles on how to control your finances. If you can control what you eat, how much you exercise, what educational degree to go after, when you wake up, when you sleep, etc., there's no difference in deciding how much you spend and how much you save (must know for what purpose!). All you need to do is read this book along with all the other informational books out there and apply the principles as it fits your current situation. It doesn't matter how much you make. It's all about the "principle" and how to apply it. The part that many, like myself in the past, seem to overlook is that you need to control and detach yourself emotionally from money. If you can understand how much you make, when it is due you, and how much it takes to meet your minimum required needs (now come on, let's not be too greedy), then think, think, think, plan and execute and do it all over if you fail. I think it worked well for me because I took the "emotional" part out of the equation and handle money objectively. So did this book help? Definitely. Every ounce of education is worth a ton of happiness. I think it important to keep the perspective realistic but yet with a steadfast attitude without ignoring all the help that is out there. The book cost as much as, if not lesser, than a fast food plate. Why not get it instead of wasting on junk food?

I bought this book at the recommendation of a friend who has practiced the wisdom in the book and prospered financially. It seems, to me, the best material on personal finance. I prefer it to some other books written by high profile authors that that i previously read. I wish I read the book earlier, but I am glad I finaly did. Though small and cheap it is a rich source of finacial wisdom. I read a library copy then bought a copy for personal reference. Highly reccommended.

This is a book of strategy for psychological warfare--it helps you tackle the battles you face every day. One of the biggest themes is how to win a fight *before* it actually starts. If only our current government and military leaders had followed the wisdom of "The Art of War"...

This is my first time reading an E. Lynn Harris book, and I was impressed by his style. With "Not A Day Goes By", he kept his chatpers short, he did not drag the story along, and he began his book with the ending of the story, something that is becoming increasingly popular with novelists of today.

Basil and Yancey are engaged to be married. In the beginning, they are very much in love with each other. Basil is clearly more in love. Yancey is so selfish, that she couldn't have loved Basil the way he loved her anyway. He is a former football player who started his own sports agency and she is an actress. As the story progress, we come to find that Basil is bisexual and struggling with his sexuality. In this book, we meet Yancey's mother, and upon reading about her mother, we see where she gets her selfishness and conceit from. When Yancey and her mother find out that Basil is bisexual, they do some awfully conniving things to him. Read this book to see if Yancey and Basil finally work things out.

I didn't give this book 5 stars because the ending seemed a bit rushed and corny. The sole reason I read a book is to see how it ends, so that was really a disappointment. Other than that, it was enjoyable.

First of all this book is funny. I was already laughing about three pages in. Aside from that Lolita Files gives us a chance to get personal with Reesy's personality and she does it really well.
Reesy, however is not the most likeable person and there are certain times in the book when i wonder why Misty puts up with her. She's selfish, manipulative, rude but she is also FUNNY and at times very real and that if nothing else is enough to keep you reading.

Ms Files book was the first in a long time to get any emotional reaction out of me. She had me laughing and crying on the way to work. She's done a great job of matching her first book with one just as good.

This book was an embarrasment, in my opinion. I bought it because it was a selection of the Literary Guild, and was sorely disappointed. The plot was shallow and thin... the characters were under-developed.... the dialogue was low-class, vulgar and unimaginative. And how realistic is it to have a man buy you a Porsche boxster after he sleeps with you for the first time... and give the girl a ring after he catches her naked in bed with another man. Talk about living in a fantasy world! I suspended reality, but this novel just wasn't believable or credible. No more Lolita Files for me. I missed the good part altogether!

Child abandonment? Snort. A fun bedtime book? Yes.

Review Date: 2008-07-29
The years haven't been kind to this book. The illustrations are somewhat dated and, judging by the other reviews here on Amazon, there's an angry contingent of parents with abandonment issues who would rather you skip this book for a guide to raise Indigo Children.

I'm just here to review a bedtime book for my two sons.

More than with most books, I really have to act as I read this book to keep their attention. I'm the cow with a nasally Blue Blood voice, I'm the dog with a droopy drawl, and I'm the snort...SNORT!

My boys like this book and we read it regularly at bedtime. Their bookshelf holds roughly 80-100 books and P.D. Eastman occupies two titles in our collection -- A Fish Out of Water and Are You My Mother?

An Absolute Favorite!!

This was one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books when I was little. I am 24 now and I still have my book (and yes its falling apart). I am keeping it to read to my kids someday. Cute story about a baby bird who goes looking for his mother who went out to get some food. He meets all sorts of things along the way and asks them all "Are you my mother?". I saw another review about this book saying that it was "Scarry" and I can't help but roll my eyes. I never once thought the book was scarry when I was little nor did my brother. I am sure your kids will love it as much as so many other generations have. Hey it's Dr. Seuss, you just can't go wrong! :)

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

I loved Are You My Mother? as a child, but I wasn't sure how my son would react. His world is filled with Spider-Man and Transformers, so how could a baby bird hold his attention? It turns out my concerns were unfounded. The story of a baby bird looking for Mama is as timeless as they come. My son's brow furrows with worry as the bird approaches a construction site looking for Mama. When the baby and Mama are reunited, my son is content. This story shows that, as bad as things might seem, everything turns out alright in the end - a very reassuring message for young kids.

What a great story. The illustrations perfectly match the simple words. Any book that Mommy can memorize and then recite in the car while the toddler turns the pages is OK with me.

Actually, I'm not the only Mommy I know who has this one memorized -- a friend got stuck in an elevator with little ones and passed the 25 minutes until they were rescued by reciting this story.

It's a great one -- little children understand the determination, the perplexity, the fear, and the contentment of the little bird as he goes on his quest. The drawings are just right. And then the wonderful ending. Ah! How sweet is childhood.

This is a lovely story.

Love it!
