Heartland Breaking Free by Lauren Brook is an excellent book. Amy's mom died and her mom's favorite horse is very sick and getting worse by the day. Business is running low and a famous show jumper (Lisa Stillman) is taken to Heartland, the horse farm. Amy's sister and her friend came up with an idea. Heartland would have an open house!

I liked Heartland Breaking Free because it has horses in the book and people helping horses with their problems like getting saddled up. There are nice caring people in the book like Amy's sister, who stays with a dying horse. Heartland Breaking Free is a very suspenseful book! I would recommend this book to people who are interested in horses.

A book teaches life success

The book title tells that it is about making money getting rich. that's true it covers a lot of topics on making money. But it reveals far more than how to get rich. That's why it becomes a great classic.

This book teaches practical ways to success in all aspects of life. Through this book you can find many timeless wisdom and useful tips on how to train your mind toward success. Beyond making money, detailed tips can be found on how to start business, get a job, succeed in career, gain leadership skills, improve relationships, manage people/assets, stay healthy, etc.

It is one of a few books worth reading over and over. I also got the MP3 audio book to play on my half-hour commute.

"Think and Grow Rich", as is "The Law of Success" by Napoleon Hill, are the grandfather of all self-help books. No other self-help book contains the depth and wealth of information "Think and Grow Rich" and "The Law of Success" contain. If you buy "Think and Grow Rich" you should also buy How to Win Friends and Influence People. These two books together will give you all the life tools you need to truly be successful.

Probably my favorite self-help book of all time. Such valuable information
...no doubt 'if you think you can, you can.' The power of our minds is incredible and this book clearly explains it. But it is Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook that is the practical and 'doing' version of its important principles. It has been life-changing for me as it keeps my focused on what I want and on track. Don't read one without the other.

Decent Medical Thriller

Review Date: 2006-09-27
CRITICAL JUDGMENT is the first novel I've read by Michael Palmer. This book is a decent medical thriller. Palmer does a very decent job of building up suspense in the story, and I kept on turning the pages. There is also a good twist at the end of this novel that I didn't expect at all, and I'm usually pretty good at spotting such twists. Overall, I found the book entertaining enough to give it three stars.

My major problem with CRITICAL JUDGMENT was with the characterization, which I thought was rather bland. Abby Dolan, the heroine of this novel, seems too good to be true. She has almost no flaws, and is pretty much a superwoman. The romantic relationships in this novel seemed forced and unnatural.

I also found the conspiracy plot in this novel to be unbelievable. Why would so many respectable people conspire to do something so horrible to so many innocent townspeople? Palmer doesn't do a good job of explaining their motivations.

Palmer is also a rather verbose writer and I found myself skimming his rather excessive descriptions of all the different locations. This book is relatively long, and I think it could have been shortened by at least 50 pages without any major changes to the plot.

Still, Palmer is a good enough suspense writer that I plan to read more of his books. If you like this novel, I would suggest Tess Gerritsen's books, which have superior characterization and are more leanly written.

I loved Dr. Dolan

Dr. Abby DOlan moves to a small town with her live in almost finace, and starts working in the ER. With any small town, you have a lot of gossip, but wth Abby's skills as a dr. she soon wins most of the town over. Its not untill she starts pokeing around and asking questions about patients with weird symptoms, do bad things start to happen...

Michael Palmer did a great job of making Abby into a strong women. She may have been played a bit at first, but her qit and smarts didn't let it happen for too long.

Dr Abby Dolan moved to Patience, California, to work at the Regional Hospital because her fianc? Josh found work at Colstar International in the same town. Colstar is the largest producer of portable power sources and they specialise in producing several types of batteries. Truly enough, Patience owes its wealth to this large company. After about five weeks in Patience, Abby notices that Josh is becoming irritable, distracted, easily fatigued and more and more frequently suffers from violent headaches which make him reach for the bottle, something he never used to do before. Furthermore, several patients treated by Abby seem to suffer from the same symptoms as Josh. After having had their blood analysed by an independent laboratory, it appears that these patients were all contaminated by cadmium. Colstar refuses to locate the source of the contamination because it would cost them too much to close the plant for any length of time. When Abby's investigations become too pressing, the director of Patience Regional Hospital, Joe Henderson, asks her to resign, menacing her with the falsified report on the death of one of her patients, Peggy Wheaton. But it is only when one night, returning home from work, Abby is shot at several times that she understands that the threat from Colstar is not to be taken lightly...
A very good medical thriller.

Dr.Abby Dolan has moved from being a hotshot Emergency Room specialist in a major city hospital to being head of the Emergency Room team at a hospital in a small Californian town, to be with her boyfriend, Josh.
When many locals succumb to the same mysterious symptons, Abby begins to explore the possibility of the illnesses being work related and linked to the towns' major industry, a huge chemical plant which makes batteries. As the towns' economy depends on this factory, Abby's enquiries meet with downright resentment.Josh and a few other townspeople become dangerously violent and are showing signs of seizures which cause blinding headaches and even more violent behaviour. It all becomes rather exciting when Abby, with the help of the town renegade, visits the factory illicitly, making her way through secret underground passages and finding secret labotatories where scientists are working on antidotes for induced diseases, all in the name of research and supposedly with government approval.Abby manages to escape, up and down cliffs, over impossible terrains and fending off bullets, proving herelf to be the equal of any Wonderwoman(with a stray bullet in her leg AND being almost torn to pieces by falls from the cliff face) It's all a pretty good yarn but it's served as another reminder to me to stay away from hospitals at all cost!

A Wonderful Read

I feel the same as some of the other reviewers here. The coverage of Roosevelts presidency was somewhat limited as was his post presidential accomplishments. It seems as if Miller was rushed for time when writing the conclusion. Had this been a two volume set and each part of Roosevelts life given the same concern, this would have been delightful. I was also taken aback that the book just ended. I would loved to have known how the public responded to this great man's death, and seen a little more enlightenment into how his legacy grew beyond his mortality.
Positively though, the book at times made me laugh out loud, especially at the thought of a ten year old Theodore finding that his latest science experiment had been chucked out the window by the maid. "Oh, the loss to science, the loss!"
I so wish that another great American like Theodore Roosevelt would step up to the plate. His legacy is even stronger nearly one hundred years after his presidency.

Whether studying the presidents or just looking for enjoyable reading, this book is a must. From the young boy, to his young bride, to his adventurous days in the American frontier, the Charge, the presidency and until the disappointing decisions of his old age, this book can not be put down. It reads more like a novel than a biography of a historical figure. A larger than life historical figure. Bravo!

A gripping recount of TR and the Progressive Era

Review Date: 2005-03-18
Having read a biography of Theodore Roosevelt 20 years ago it's amazing the light years biographies have come. Biographies until recent times had been little more than recitations of their life and times, but now are delving much more deeply into original source documents and completing a much fuller and more comprehensive picture of that subject. Biographers are also taking a much more multi-disciplinary approach pulling in sociology, psychology, history, political science and economics that make biographies a much richer read. You feel like you really understand them in the context of their times.

Theodore Roosevelt by Nathan Miller is just such a read. Theodore Roosevelt is already a lively and entertaining figure and his life was like a movie anyways. Sickly child to Wildman of the West, Society Dandy to wily politician, scorned outsider to President. Miller captures it all in style that fairly crackles with life. His writing on the period of TR's entry to politics through to the Spanish-American War was so gripping I could hardly put it down. Miller pulls in a great number of archival and original sources to paint a much more complete comprehensive and engaging portrait of TR. I haven't read Edmund Morris's Theodore Rex yet, but hear it's equally good. The anecdotes Miller throws in showcases what a manic bundle of energy TR was, yet he lets TR live in his era. Too often revisionist historians try and impose today's standards on past figures. Miller eschews that and TR is really seen for the man he is.

Theodore Roosevelt is a compelling read for those interested in learning more on him and the Progressive Era. I'd read this book as a companion piece to two courses I was taking last semester, Gilded Age and Progressive Era (HIST 4461) and US Diplomatic History 1890 to Present (HIST 3321) and it tied to both exceedingly well, providing great insight into the context of the times. As far as insight into TR himself I dare say Miller is far more objective than TR was in his autobiography and truly captures TR in most every respect.

I am reading all the presential bios in order.

This was by FAR one of the greatest bios I have read thus far. The author does a magnificent job in showing us what TR was like. I got very close to the subject and really *felt* this book.

He provides LOTS of detail and anecdotes, but in such a readable way. I would find myself reading 75 to 100 pages in one sitting without even realizing it.

If you are reading all the presidential bios like I am, THIS is the book to read for TR. After you are done, you can go back and read the series currently out (Theodore Rex, When the Trumpets Call, etc) to fill in the rest.

This book does TR great justice. A great book for a great person!

Never a dull moment!

He assumed the Presidency at the untimely death of President McKinley and for 7 1/2 years, Theodore Roosevelt made history. He was the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize (Russo-Japanese War) and he put The Panama Canal project back on the rails when it stalled. He entered into a treaty with Japan that forbade Japanese involvement with the Philippines, Hawaii and US interests in China but that enabled Japan to annex Korea later. He negotiated with France, Spain and Germany regarding Morocco that resulted in France and Spain dividing up Morocco and that convinced Germany to build up its navy for war at another time. He also negotiated to reposition the dividing line between Alaska and Canada. On the home front, his administration created laws regulating food and drugs, supervision of insurance companies, investigation of child labor, regulation of the packing houses, establishing standards for meat processing and opened up competition by breaking up the railway, steamship and coal mine joint ownership. TR had the States set up conservation programs for parklands but also for power sites (Niagara Falls) and natural resources such as oil and coal. Roosevelt was the first President to bring the people of the press into the White House to field their questions and also to acknowledge and welcome visitors of artistic/creative talents to the White House. There is so much more. This is not a full biography but centers predominantly on his activities as President. The writer's style is never pedantic or sentimental. Recommended.

Like all the Heartland books, this one was good, but I was a little disapointed with it. It had a good ending, but I felt like the plot was a little overdone and got kind bored towards the middle. But don't let this book keep you from reading the others! I think the rest of Lauren's books are much better and a little more realistic. But this one is still worth reading.

Amy Fleeming, Ty, and Ben all work at a farm called heartland. Their job is to save horses, fix there problems, and find the them a good home. They got a new horse Gallant Prince. Well Prince was in a fire accident and he got saved so did the other horses. The fire was at a different farm, Ryan was on duty the night of the fire. He got burnt really bad he is blind in one eye. I would recommend this book because other kids that live on a farm could learn how other people fix their horses problems. Kids that do not live on a farm could also learn how they save horses. Some kids probably ask their parents what do other farmers do to fix a horse's problems. Amy goes to someone's house and they come out and watch the movie that she got now she is going to be able to join up with Prince. In conclusion this is why I chose this book because some kids may want to know how other people take care of horses. The heartland books are my favorite. Also if you like animals this would be a good book to read.

Reading this book by Jack Klugman, you could almost see it written by Tony Randall. Far more vulnerable and sensitive that you would expect from the characterization we see of his public persona.

The book was very insightful and surprising on the complexity of these two individuals and the relationship they developed over the years. I was duly impressed.

He sums it up quite well at the end of the book:

"If you're like I was, or you're someone who likes to hold a grudge, or you've never really let someone know what they mean to you because you're afraid, ask yourself this question: what are you really protecting? If you look, you'll see it: nothing. Absolutely nothing. Just phantoms from old wounds that never healed. Give them up and join the people in your life who love you. Risk it all. For me, it was the best gamble I ever made."

In this, though the book is easy and quick to read, it is an epic in personal growth as well as a tribute to the effect those we let in our lives have on us.

A GREAT Story of Friendship

This was a wonderful story of friendship. Jack wrote this after Tony died. It briefly tells about how they met, how The Odd Couple came to be and how their friendship became a life savor for Jack, especially after he was diagnosed with throat cancer. Tony was instrumental in building Jack's confidence back after Jack lost his voice from cancer surgery so that Jack could perform again. Tony was also helpful in allowing Jack to see how important friendship is, especially during rough times. Jack never thought much of friendships. He was a loner and reluctant to open himself up to trusting anyone. But, Tony showed Jack how much he cared and how much he was routing for him when he was trying to come back as an actor. This book is a tribute to a partnership, a very successful partnership. Included in the book is a DVD of some outtakes from The Odd Couple. This was the icing on the cake.

Sound teaching from the straightforward minister we all admire. This could be one of the best spiritually-based books I have ever read. I was raised a Baptist amongst the old world fire & brimstone preachers of the day. I wish the preachers of my youth had been as passionate, succinct, and as educational about The Word as Charles Stanley. I would not have played tic-tac-toe with my pals in the last pew each Sunday, I am sure. This book outlines the truth about spiritual warfare with the devil, his nasty ways, and what you can do about it when your temptations are great and you need the influence of the Holy Spirit to carry you through. As a professional writer, I heartily endorse the quality of the presentation as well. Everyone should read this book.

this book really gets to the point on how the devil can strike you and how you can handle it. Also how it may come from the least expected source. it really hit home for me and how the devil was using my siblings to get to me. when i learned how to handle it it really gave me a peace about things i had been going thru. also other things that had happened. so now when things come up i really think about what is really happening before judging. it is a great book for anyone going thru difficult times at the moment or in the past ,and the future it will help you....

Review Date: 2008-01-29
Dr. Stanley says we will all leave a legacy by the life we've lived. Every day that legacy is being written by the things we do and the choices we make. He says when you die, you life will impact other people in a positive or negative way. Reading what he said about his family members' rich legacies reminded me of the spiritual legacies I inherited and for which I am eternally grateful.

In an earlier chapter he talks about receiving wisdom from God by asking for it in faith as taught in the book of James. He says we are to read God's Word and apply its principles. One of those pricinples is associating with desirable people. The list also includes meditating on God's Word and being sensitive to the Holy Spirit's promptings.

Waiting on God is a theme that is included throughout the book. He explains there are negative consequences to jumping the gun and moving before God intends. Persistence is essential to doing things God's way also. Jesus taught the principle of praying persistently.

Having a realization that God is in complete control of the circumstances in our lives gives us the confidence that all things are working for our good. He writes, "We are under the protection of the Holy Spirit; nothing can happen to us that God does not allo, and we know that He permits only those circumstances--no matter how bad they seem--that He can use for our good."

Dr. Stanley is an excellent writer and this book is just as good as all his other books. It is a no-nonsense book about being a Christian and what is really involved. Satan is constantly pushing us to do things we shouldn't be doing and this book helps to recognize Satan's temptations and how to ignore those temptations. Dr. Stanley is truly a minister of God!

I had owned this book when I was a kid. I loved it because it gave you so much information about the different breeds of horses and the pictures were wonderful for me to look at back then. I bought this book because I don't know what happened to the original and it made me sad. Out of nostalgia for the past experience I had when I had the book as a kid, as an adult, I wanted the book back. I was so thankful that it was possible to even get a copy because I know it is an older book. Even though the reading is not geared for an adult I still find the book heart-warming to own.

I haven't read the new edition, but I have an old, 1960s hardcover from an antique store and it is beautiful! Henry's breed descriptions turn the history of a horse into a captivating story. Best of all, it is all factual! Dennis's amazing horse pictures illuminate the book and give it a charming touch. Being a devoted Appie lover and owner, I was particularly fond of the chapter on the Appaloosa! All the stories and accompanying artwork peices are spectacular, though, and it is my opinion that every junior rider worth her salt should have a copy of this book on their shelf.

When I bought this book, it looked pretty good and since it had more than a hundred pages, i thought i would enjoy it but i didnt.
This book starts of with a story of a horse, then goes into some boring history. You dont get very many good facts from this book, so if you are looking for a book that has a lot of facts about horses in it, dont buy this one!

Beautiful and Informative

This is one of Henry's best horse books due to its incredible combination of facts and breathtaking paintings. Many of the top classical breeds of the world are showcased in this one-of-a-kind book. An excellent gift choice for any horse lover, young or old.
