This is truly a great book. It is the real starting point for Harry's adventures. The Chamber of Secrets and The Sorcerer's Stone weren't able to give me anywhere near the amount of excitement I received while reading this book. I give this book 5 stars for many different reasons

Harry Potter's skills as a sorcerer aren't very impressive until this book when he learns to use the Patonus...something...I read this a while back lol. Also, the Dementors were the first creatures throughout the whole series to really strike fear into my mind. Sure there were traps that were devastating in the first book, and sure there was the basilisk who could kill people with its glare. But the Dementors were able to make a person suffer horribly through only emotions. I mean, who wouldn't be scared of having all the happiness and good emotions sucked out of you and the environment around you. The chilled air and flickering lights (maybe they actually turned off) scared the bejesus out of me.

Here's a measurement for how good this book is and how it's a turning point for this whole series. I cannot begin to describe how fast I read this book compared to the first two. The Sorcer's Stone took me a whole year because it bored the crap out of me. The Chamber of Secrets...I got up to the 2nd paragraph and actually could not go on reading it. The Prisoner of Azkaban, by far my favorite of the whole series, took me the better part of a week or two to read. The same with The Deathly Hallows and The Half-Blood Prince. Overall, the maturity of this book compared to the first two is pumped up and it is truly a masterpiece for people of all ages.

We've now bought all the Harry Potter audio books. My husband's not a great reader at home (newspaper and sports mags) but he drives a lot for his job. He loves listening to all these stories. We also play them in the car for the kids when we are travelling. We are big Harry Potter fans and these books have been a wonderful purchase. Now he can join in all our conversations too! Jim Dale is amazing, you completely forget it's only one person reading the book.

My Favorite book is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling. This book is funny. My favorite characters are Harry Potter and Ron Weasly. Harry's funny and adventurous. He's fun and likes to try new things and has lots of courage. Ron is funny also, and likes to do almost what Harry does. Ron and Harry make the Harry Potter series joyful.

The author's writing style is joyful and the genre is adventure. J.K. Rowling is best at setting up the setting I think Hogwarts is a wonderful setting.

The best part of this book is that ever character is different in each chapter. They do lots of mini adventures in the big adventure; to find the prisoner Sirius Black. Best yet, Harry tries to go to Hogsmeade but gets caught by Professor Snape. I recommend this book for people in 3rd and above.

This book takes you on a journey that inspires you to live everyday to the fullest and appreciate what you have.
It's a incredible book and hard to put down once you start reading. I am in awe at the pain and suffering they experienced and how they overcame all the obstacles that were in their way including death. I had listened to the audio book first and then bought the book and read it too, love everything about it.
It is worth your time.

I loved this book so much I lent it to family and friends. Now I can't wait to get it back, so I can read it again. A truly empowering book. Written with such compassion that readers could never be "grossed out" by some of the extremes of survival that are revealed in this book.

Incredibly inspirational story. This book captures the emotion of the Andes experience through the eyes of Nando Parrado. He seems to leave nothing unrevealed. For anyone who "enjoyed" the movie Alive, yet wants a truer account, a fuller account...this book is wonderful! The highlight is listening to Parrado talk us through his mental and physical journey as he and Canessa risked everything to escape the mountains and save themselves. These events were mostly glossed over in the film Alive. Yet, the trek out of the mountains is arguably the most inspirational, miraculous part of the entire ordeal. A potentially life-changing book. It's up to you really...

This is an excellent book. It describes an unfortunate event/airplane crash of the Uruguayan Rugby team on October 13, 1972 high in the Andes, and their astonishing survival, the hardships they had to endure and their long, excruciating trek out of their ordeal, written superbly using lots of adjectives and action verbs. As you read through the pages, you can actually picture what was happening, down to the last detail. I've only started to read the book and I'm already totally captivated. Don't hesitate buying this book or giving it as a gift. It's a great choice. I also bought the video, but won't watch it until I have read the book.

I loved this book. I recommend it to anyone who stands still long enough for me to shout, "go get this book!" I'm not a fan of self-help books, and this isn't one, but heck, it should be because if this doesn't make you take stock of your life, stop whining, and start living, than nothing will.

One of my favorite things about it was seeing how much a person's personality dicates how they'll handle adversity - this book has take-charge-bossy types, as well as curl-up-and-give-up types, and oddly enough, the one who adapts best is the take-life-as-it-comes type. I went camping with 14 friends a week after reading this, and saw all personality types and secretly rated them all on how they'd have done in the Andes. ;-)

Read it, and you'll never complain about your life again.

This is a wonderful book! A gripping personal account of the authors service to our country in Vietnam, as a young marine, as well as stories from other soldiers of the Twins Platoon. I couldn't put the book down when I started reading.
I am a Vietnam era veteran, though I did not serve in Vietnam. I had tears in my eyes in many parts of this book. It still angers me to think there was no welcome home for these brave soldiers after the unimaginable things they endured, and their tremendous personal sacrifice.
I think this book should be required reading in all high school history classes. No one should forget how much our veterans have given, they paid a very dear price for our freedom.
Christy, Thank You for your service, and Thank You for this book!!!

The book was both interesting and informational for me as the author was part of a unit I was also assigned to. I can therefore relate more personally to the events and the time period referred to. I enjoyed the book very much and was reminded of the hard times sometimes suffered by veterans returning home.

Young Marines in Vietnam

I originally purchased this book for my Father who was a young Marine in Korea. Once I received it though I found it to be a very interesting read. When I was in high school 20 years ago, we learned very little about the Vietnam War in our history classes. By reading this novel by Christy Sauro I was able to learn not only technical facts about Vietnam but I could also feel the emotions that he and the other Marines and their families went through during the war. For this being Mr. Sauro's first novel I thought he did an excellent job and also did his research well!

OUTSTANDING

I discovered THE TWINS PLATOON in a bookstore on my way to a publishing meeting with my editor in the spring of 2006. Each chapter captivated me, and I devoured the book on the long train ride from Washington to Boston. Beginning with the opening paragraph, I felt like I was transported back in time from the platoon's origins in 1967, through boot camp, their fighting in Vietnam, and the men's homecoming.

I found the narrative gripping and personal since I felt like I was reading the book I just completed 37 years later titled: WE WERE ONE. As I flew through the beautifully written narrative it sometimes felt like only the individual Marines names' changed. From boot camp to battle, Chris Sauro captures the intangible spirit that makes Marines -- Marines. He also captures in words how combat changes ordinary Americans. The brotherhood, pathos, valor, and even the invisible scars of battle are felt by the reader on each page of THE TWINS PLATOON.

What became completely obvious after reading the first few pages of the book is the enormous amount of time and care the author devoted to researching his fellow Marines and telling their story. This book was a decades' long crusade and each chapter is brimming with detail. The reader feels the emotions, spirit, heroics, of the twenty or so Marines who comprise the book's focus.

To say I recommend the book is an understatement. THE TWINS PLATOON should be mandatory reading for all Americans since it transcends the war in Vietnam and provides a "foxhole" view of Americans at war. Often obscured by politics, the war on the ground, told by privates, corporals, and sergeants fighting it, is often the forgotten view of the global War on Terror just as it was during the Vietnam War.

Author's Obsession Becomes a Great Story

By Christy Sauro's own accounting he has put thousands of hours into the research and writing of his book "The Twins Platoon: An Epic Story of Young Marines At War In Vietnam". The end result is a magnificent obsession! He has captured the heart and soul of those young Marines who were known as "The Twins Platoon".

On June 28, 1967 150 young men and women were sworn into the USMC in front of thousands at a Minnesota Twins baseball game. The swearing in ceremony was just the beginning of many personal and sometimes heroic and even tragic stories of which the author shares with us. We get to follow the lives of some of these men as they go through basic training and eventually go to Vietnam. Some are killed, some physically wounded, others emotionally damaged, but all of them have changed in some ways.

The problem of readjusting back to their old lives once they left the Marines is another issue the book deals with. For some, this transition ended in suicide, divorce, drugs or booze. Yet, some managed to over come the inner demons and go on with their lives successfully.

The book is obviously well researched and presents an anthology of stories that Sauro weaves into his over-all history of this group of Marines. It becomes evident that Marines are always Marines and that there is something special in being one. There is pride in the telling of these stories and it shows.

The subtitle says this is an "epic story"; that may be an understatement. The author will allow you to sense and feel the emotional and spiritual pain of these Marines. You will become engrossed in the book but more importantly, you will become changed. For those who have never served in combat it will be an eye-opener and those who have it will be a re-run through your emotional memories. It is well written, entertaining, educational, riveting, and an emotional story that is filled with a love of country, the Marine Corps and fellow veterans. A MUST READ! I personally recommend this book!

This book was jammed full of great tips for the e-bay seller on where to buy, what to buy, what not to buy, niche markets, trends, and business relationships. The authors have included invaluable hints on pricing formula. Other concepts of the trade including drop shipping and consignment were also covered. There was also a fantastic merchandise directory, which in itself would probably cover the cost of the book. The glossary of terms would also be very informative for those just starting out in the business.

A great buy for those beginning in E-Bay selling. Highly recommended also for those who need to improve their E-Bay trade.

Like a lot of others, I've bought a number of items on eBay, and occasionally I've sold something. I noticed that a lot of the sellers were small-timers (like me), but that others seemed to be making a living with their sales. I've wondered how they did it--and where they got their merchandise. This book really clued me in.

It reinforced some of the things that I already knew, and opened my eyes to some possibilities I didn't know about. I've sold stuff from around my house, but I've never considered yard sales, local advertising web sites, or thrift shops (suggested by this book), not to mention obtaining items on a larger scale. I'd also never thought about becoming a "trading assistant" (another suggestion that is fully explained in the book). There is much more information in it that I can really see myself using and an extensive directory that would be of use to anyone.

If you've ever thought of taking your eBay trading up another level (or more), this is a clearly organized, very useful, comprehensive book. It's wonderful!

This book leaves no stone unturned. If you are truly thinking about having an eBay business, or you already have one that needs spicing up with fresh ideas, you need this book. "How and Where to Locate the Merchandise to Sell on eBay" by Michael P. Lujanac and Dan W. Blacharski is much more than just a few tips on locating merchandise. This book offers creative advice on what kind of merchandise works and when, how to maximize your profits on eBay, and pitfalls and traps to avoid. The ideas for finding merchandise are quite extensive and a directory of contacts is even thrown in. All this information is not just from someone who has done a little research. It is evident that this is insider information from people who have been there. The book is riddled with tips and tricks from eBay Power Sellers and is organized very well. In summary, get this book.

Whether you are new to the world of eBay or a veteran bidding warrior, all can benefit from this insider's guide to merchandise purchasing. `How and Where to Locate the Merchandise to Sell on eBay', is a "start small" book with big ideas. Although packed with common sense guidelines on how to research sales, product testing, drop shipping, and consignment, the book's highlighting feature was the extensive merchandise directory. Readers are given "tried and true" approaches to locating sell-able products and then testing the waters with selective product testing in order to maximize profits and minimize sitting stock. With the guidance of Blacharski and Lujanac, anyone can take the auction reins in hand and lead their eBay business into greener pastures. This book is a sure way to empty your attic and start stuffing your pockets.

Much of the material relates to the workplace. It is practical and interesting.

Fantastic Book for ADD'ers

Review Date: 2002-06-16
Thom Hartmann is one of the best writers on ADD, for ADD'ers. Why? Because he doesn't label people with ADD as having brain disease and broken. His Hunter in a Farmer's World Model makes so much sense. It's been dissed by Barkley and others, but in the last year hard genetic research has come in proving the theory, and other ADD researchers have reached the same conclusions.
But that's not why you should buy this book Buy it because it gives tons of examples of people with ADD who have had success in all different aspects of life. The fact is, ADD people are the ones with ants in their pants who change the world. Who don't sit there and settle for the ordinary. They do things-- start companies (entrepreneurs,) make noise about problems (call them politicians and activists,) investigate stuff (detectives, reporters, scientists who don't wash test tubes and replicate the ADD scientists visionary work.)

So read about how ADD'ers make it, how they succeed, and start feeling not only hopeful, but perhaps even a bit cocky about being an ADD'er or knowing one.

The BEST collection of suggestions for dealing with ADD
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 30 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-08
Of the 4 ADD books I've read so far, I've definitely enjoyed this one most. I think it has the most practical tips, a good explanation for what's known about ADD, and a supportive, but not condescending tone.

I even liked the Hunter/Farmer model/theory/metaphor/mythology of ADDers just being another type of person, rather than a defective one. He makes some convincing arguments for the plausibility of this theory, yet doesn't hit you over the head with it. I don't personally need the ego boost of saying I'm a Hunter, versus those slow Farmers. :-) But it is somewhat comforting to think you're just wired differently, instead of wired defectively.

Anyway, the best part is the tips from his previous readers. I've read through them and highlighted a lot. Now I have to go back and write summaries, and try to apply one idea a week, rather than trying to do everything at once.

As a "hunter" myself, I never could get past all that boring ADD diagnotic stuff about receptors, etc. This was the first book on ADD that was interesting enough to read. It confirmed, for me, what I thought all along. I'm not defective, just different. Many gifted people throughout history have been just tormented by our boring farmer society. This book has also helped my to deal with my child's school. I had been fighting with them for years. Another thing that I think is interesting is the Native American (or Nomadic European tribes)connection. I had speculated about it myself. Now when someone tells me they're ADD, I ask if they have Native American blood, and so far the answer is always yes.

A really useful book!

I have to admit that I was prepared not to think much of Thom Hartman's hunter vs. farmer theory. I wanted something that seemed more "real" (now I'm not sure what I meant by that). So I saved this book for last and read Russell Barkeley and others first. To my surprise, this was my favorite of the six books on ADD I read, maybe because I did save it for last. I read all the pathological stuff first and it made a lot of sense to me, but it also made me feel overwhelmed about the job ahead of me raising two sons with ADHD. Then I read Hartman and immediately felt a sense of relief. This I can deal with, I thought. (And to my real surprise, I realize now that I'm a hunter, too!)

Specifically, this book is full of "tips" from folks with ADD themselves (mostly adults, with a few high school and college students mixed in) about how they manage various aspects of ADD in their lives. The book presupposes that you know what ADD is and accept that you will have to manage it or it will manage you (if you haven't gotten that far yet, read Driven to Distraction first). It does not expound his hunter/farmer theory in great detail (that's in ADD- A Different Perception) but gives you enough of this theory that you can "get it" without reading his other books. (In my opinion, you can skip his other books and go straight to this one.) Hartman does not suggest (as I thought he would) that folks with ADD don't ever need to consider medication, nor does he gloss over the fact that life with ADD presents many challenges, difficulty, and pain for "hunters" and their families, teachers, and friends. (Note: this book is oriented more toward teens and adults than young children in terms of the "tips" but I also think it is valuable for folks with young children who can benefit from the "long view" of life with ADD.)

So many books out there are about theory, and this one is about real life management without elaborate point systems and IEPs. The message is to understand yourself, find out what you're good at and what you're not, and then try to find a path through life where you use your talents. Understand that you're not good at everything, and get help with things you need help with, but basically, get out there and channel that energy and enthusiasm and locate what someone called "right livelihood."

Mr. Peters' Dream
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-03
Arthur Miller is arguably the greatest American playwright. In his later years, Miller wrote less publicized works that seemed to reflect a sense of lament in old age. This particular play fits that standard.

Mr. Peters is caught in an apparent dream in which he is unsure if he or others are awake. In the dream, he encounters his wife, his daughter, his daughter's boyfriend, as well as his long dead brother and mistress. Adele, a seemingly unimportant background character, represents the darker fringes of the big city the characters inhabit. Mr. Peters is caught between the past and the present in his explorations of his feelings and actions of the past. The story ends on a rather uncomfortble note as the husband of his mistress apparently discovers her infidelity. Which leads Peters to turn to his daughter who is apparently unsure of the father of her baby and console her. This brings to mind the haunting line from page 26, "A man who betrays his wife will betray his country.

The story is strange at times yet is very witty about the evolution of society. There are some great one-liners in this brief tale. Miller fans are certain to enjoy this oddity.

This novella was his start and it's a true, humorous tale of the Bee Gees from thier start to around 1984. It's more an adult book than a child's and is tons of fun. Illustrator Alex Brychta does a fantastic job of humorously portraying all the characters in the Bee Gees life. This makes a great gift for a true Bee Gees fan.

This book opens with a case study of a buyer's squabble about over whose territory it is to buy a certain dress. Then we get the solution and action plan about the squabble. Who in retail has not experienced this. Yet it is refreshing to hear the solution, and to read the rest of the excellent case studies in the book.

My retail business is not a department store, yet every case study in this book was relevent to my business. The authors cover display, direct import, vendor relationships, budgets, purchasing and pricing strategies, marketing, hiring practices, and everything pertinant to retail today.

It is difficult to find a good book on retail strategies. There are hundreds of books on marketing, but only a few that cover the purchasing side of retailing. This is the best purchasing book I have found.
