this is quite an interesting book, as i am fascinated with death. perhaps knowing how one leaves the world makes death more familiar, especially in the case of suicide. read it, books like this are quaint and dainty, as the brits say.

Leaving this earth is not easy, but Oscar Wilde sums it up.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-04
Although not all the last words are by Oscar Wilde. This book takes you around the world and repeats the sometimes comedic, other times tragic comments made by people as they are in the final stages of life. It is almost surreal to feel the presence of real life hero's, heroines and common folk, as they begin their journey into the unknown. The quotes were made as they were dying. They come short and fast. Sometimes mocking the world, shunning and cursing the executioner, others bitterly regretting the life they have led. Other famous last words are hilarious, sarcastic, cunning, and shameful. All in all you will not have this book far from your side. When you have a couple of minutes to kill you will pick it up and start to read it. When your family and friends discover the book, you will find it is one of the most popular and talked about book favorites, after they have read it. Soon you will start to hear quotes in conversations from people who have read the book. When this happens you realize it was probably one of the best bargains you ever bought.

A visually stunning book from two modern art masters. Quite a change for those accustomed to the art of the human figure; to flowers. The closeups are crisp, arranged immaculately, and capture an unnatural beauty in the floral kingdom. One to be had!

I bought this book for my son-in-law, who became a first time father in February. It is filled with short antedotes and quotes from famous people, including such people as Harry Truman and Oprah Winfrey. It is a great book for someone who is too active to read. Each page takes only a minute to read and can make you laugh and make you cry. It is a treasure for every Dad and lets him know that he is special.

The minds behind the mind.

I am fascinated by the minds behind my favorite minds. President Thomas S. Monson, member of the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ, obliges my whim.

This book contains many of President Monson's favorite quotes and pearls of wisdom. This isn't a President Monson Quote book, though this fluent speaker deserves one, but it is rather a book of his favorite quotes from other people. He has great quotes and quips, and it is worth the price of the book.

Practical inspirational quotes to refresh you
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-07
Since this is a book of quotes, I will stick to practical matters in trying to describe it. The book is 124 pages, including the 2 page introduction by Alexandria Hatcher (member of the faculty of the 'Center for Spiritual Development' in the Archdiocese of New York, and a coordinator of the Come Home Community. She is also the editor of "Forgiveness: Thoughts for the New Milennium".)

So, you basically have 122 pages of quotes in this small hardback volume easily held in one hand. (The book size is about five by five inches). There is a nice photograph of the Pope John Paul II on the back cover, smiling with one hand raised in blessing.

The chapters of this book are: "Theme: Relating to Oneself", "Interlude - Gift of the Holy Spirit", "Theme: Relating to Others", "Interlude - Spirituality of Work", "Theme: Relating to God". Then a page called "Notes" which lists the sources for the quotes in the book.

So, what types of quotes are in this book? Quotes which can embolden: "Let yourselves be led by the hand of the LOrd, because he wishes to accomplish Redemption today through your means."

Quotes which can enlighten: "Ever fresh souls... unite their sufferings with Christ's sacrifice, in a joint 'offertory', which surpasses time and space and embraces the whole of mankind and saves it."

Quotes which can strengthen: "When we are shaken by the sight of evil spreading in the universe, with all the devastation which it produces, we should not forget that such unleashing of forces of sin is overcome by the saving power of Christ."

Quotes which lend grace: "The Good Samaritan is each of us! Through vocation! Through duty! The Good Samaritan loves charity. St. Paul says, "This makes us ambassadors for Christ." (2 Cor 5:20)."

Quotes which are relevant to today's news stories: "In the name of God: respect, protect, love and serve life, every human life! Only in this direction will you find justice, development, true freedom, peace and happiness."

Quotes which mince no words, for today's pick and choose types: "Contradiction is obliteration of the line of demarcation between good and evil, it means calling humanism which is actually sin."

And quotes which give hope - the way our Pope knew to do as one who faced down the evils of Nazism and Communism in his own life: "One must accept the call, one must listen, one must receive, one must measure one's strength, and answer, "Yes, yes." Fear not."

"Fear not" or "Be not afraid" were John Paul II's first words spoken as Pope. It is the message of Fatima, that in the end good (Mary's Immaculate Heart) will triumph - it is the message in the Bible also, that one day good will triumph with finality over evil. It is this reminder that Pope John Paul II spoke often - fear not, good will win. It's a good thing to meditate upon in one's daily life and when facing troubles - and it's the content of this book - fear not. This book of quotes in its own small way, attempts to tell us WHY.

I liked this book very much and find it useful. I hope that you will too.

Finnish Words-for-the-Wise
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-20
Fourth in a series of books of proverbs, this book has a beautiful introductory poem by Inkeri Väänänen-Jensen based on her visit to Finland. The proverbs are illustrated with pen and ink drawings showing sites in Finland such as Olavinlinna and Turku Castles, Porvoo Cathedral, Finlandia Hall, the Jean Sibelius Monument, fifteenth-century Church of Saint Anne, Eliel Saarinen's Helsinki Railway Station and other monuments. The sauna, birchbark blankets, weavings and other facets important to Finnish culture are shown.

The proverbs of Poverty and Plenty, Religion and Hope, Nature and the Seasons, Philosophy, Words of Wisdom, and other headings reflect the folk-sayings of a people.

Examples of Finnish Proverbs:

"When thinking of yourself, you have no time for others."

"You are rich if you have love."

"Know your own worth, recognize others."

"A fallen tree cannot rise."

"He is poor who has no soul."

"The time for miracles is not over."

Other titles in the Proverb Series include German Proverbs, Scandinavian Proverbs, and Scottish Proverbs.
