so for hockey players. Great for the coffee table.

This is a great book for anyone who enjoys movies. It's light and fun and really does harvest some awesome dialogue from some
awesome movies (but some I've never heard of). I also like how it's organized with categories like rants, insults, romance
and my favorite "less than romantic."
I remember that line.

What a great collection. Many of these lines are standards in conversation among myself and my sons, but Jim brings back
long lost memories of films that I had not seen in years. My wife and I have rented a number of movies based on this book.

What made the "Roaring 20's" roar?

Review Date: 2008-11-15
Haven't you been wondering about the Roaring 20's? What made them "roar?" It had to be more than just the Charleston, right?
WWI ended and industrial manufacturing was humming along. This book, while never mentioning the roaring 20's, made it perfectly
plain that sound policies can fuel a decade of prosperity and plenty.
I had no impression at all of Calvin Coolidge. Something Jay Nordlinger wrote in an Impromptus column made me pick up this book, and what a find!
ON WEALTH:
"Our country is an exceedingly good example of the fact that if production be encouraged and increased, then distribution fairly well takes care of itself. Other countries, by their actions in stopping production, in penalizing industry and economy, and rewarding indolence and extravagance, have been able to bring about a very general and equal distribution of misery, but no other country ever approached ours in the equal and general distribution of prosperity." Coolidge, 1923
ON TAXES:
"That tax is theoretically best which interferes least with business. Every student knows that excessively high tax rates defeat their own purpose. They dry up that source of revenue and leave those paying lower rates to furnish all the taxes."
AND ALSO:
"There is no escaping the fact that when the taxation of large incomes is excessive, they tend to disappear."
AND ALSO:
"Ultimately, property rights and personal rights are the same thing."
Having read this book and thought about it a bit, I might have to conclude that Coolidge is one of the most underappreciated presidents in the bunch.
This book is well worth buying. I sat and laughed out loud for an entire evening, reading some of the stories surrounding the President. I read some to my darling husband, too. It's an enjoyable book.

Our Most Underrated President

Noted historian David Pietrusza has added another gem to his impressive body of work, this time compiling and editing the
words of one of his favorite subjects, the underrated Calvin Coolidge, who deftly presided over an unprecedented growth of
American commerce and prosperity. Noted primarily for his brevity, this book proves over and over that Coolidge possessed
a native eloquence that may be unmatched by any of our presidents save Lincoln.
Each carefully chosen quote or anecdote is a treasure, and the longer pieces still fascinate more than 80 years later. Pietrusza wraps it all together with some pretty decent prose of his own, as is to be expected from the author of "1920: The Year of the Six Presidents" and the soon to be released "1960" which I had the pleasant opportunity to review in a late draft.
This is a book you will want to keep by your reading chair, to take down, ponder and enjoy for many years to come.

This is a little gift book of inspirational quotes and sweet little drawings. It gives the quotes, the authors and their
birth & death years, and a short phrase describing each author. For example, "'It's a very short trip. While alive, live!'
Malcolm Forbes (1919-1990), American publisher." I have a box of greeting cards that are blank inside, and I like to write
in a quote that fits with a card for a more personal thank you or birthday card, for example. These quotes are inspiring
and upbeat and do just the trick.

We opened a small Christmas package (this book) that came from a friend. Lo, our view about our own very own lives, as in
"right now," were almost instantly and excitingly redeemed, simply by contemplating the simple truths found when merely reading
the first two chapters! Call it good-timing if you must, but this little book easily brought us to consider how to let "time"
serve us, NOW, as it truly is ... and always has been, well before this ole world "humanized" the concept of time with hundreds
of false beliefs that lead us all to experience useless longings. Adopting the "now" is all that is available to find inner
peace, if only we will see it. It's that simple. This book is stimulating, intellectual reading for anyone seeking inner peace
by merely readily embracing most all of the wisdoms that are given in this book, simply for the taking!

As the number of indiginous societies declines and technology replaces older ways of life, this book celebrates the principles
shared by cultures around the world. Editor Shirley Jones has culled bits of wisdom from 240 ethnic groups on every continent,
ranging from the restorative power of one's heritage - to making community. The book has a foreword by Brooke Medicine Eagle.

This collection of thoughts from around the world emphasizes that wisdom is not limited to technologically advanced society
but, in fact, is often found most profoundly in the simplest of cultures. The editor has assembled words of many people in
a manner that shows clearly how related all peoples are, how our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions are not limited by the
physical and cultural barriers we normally perceive, and how humor, grace, and insight light up lives in all cultures.

"Motivation is key!"

In Basic Combat Training & then Advanced Individual Training this year I was convinced "motivation is key!" (& not just because
that's one of the things we chanted when executing "corrective training.") If the world can be divided into two categories
-- things that enhance motivation & things that steal motivation -- then R. Dale Jeffery's excellent little book falls into
the positive category. ... Divided into subjects such as Leadership, Training & Attitude, the book is a useful source for
quotations for a public speaker or writer -- & a great source for a soldier seeking a morale boost. I bought the book at the
Ft. Leonard Wood clothing & sales store & carried it around in my Battle Dress Uniform in the days before my final Army Physical
Fitness Test, drawing on the quotations to inspire. ... The book would make a great gift for any soldier. ... It's the kind
of book that can be carried or left by the bed or in the car to be refered to whenever the need for a motivational boost arises.
... I hope Jeffery expands it in subsequent editions, without losing its portability.
An Excellent Little Quote Book.

This little book is densely packed with great little bits of wisdom, and practical principles. It can be applied apply to
Soldier's, but may easily be applied to anyone that is fighting for something...which should be all of us (life is combat,
even if it just your own principles that you are fighting to up hold). I have been able to use it very successfully with
my boy scouts as well as the military units that I have commanded and currently command. This is a great motivational resource.

This is a must read for all, but especially those of us who have been there.
From the moment I began reading I slipped back into the past-I laughed, I cried, but most of all, I thanked God for helping me through some pretty hard times, and for people like Gene Mason who have shared their experiences.

I have been very lucky to get this book right from the author. I have been an ardent reader of Dr. Birnbaum's books. But this
one turned out to be somnething that every person, - more or less related to higher education and its fields, must have longed
and waited. You may find all the quotations from the beginning of the US Higher Education history to the present date. You
will find here the quotes from the distinguished presidents of the most prominent universities and their views, perceptions
and thoughts. The book is fabulously organized and covers all the fields of the higher education. It is a must-have-book for
everyone - even for the present, incumbent presidents and deans and for those who think they may find themselves in that position,
or someone who is interested in the system of the field. One will be amused by some humorous quotes and you will stay up till
late night before you decide it is time to close the book. You will come to the last page and then go back to the front page
and start anew. I really enjoyed reading this book. It is rather a compendium, encyclopaedia and great reference that has
been missing from our shelves. Thanks to the author for his efforts.

Reading Robert Birnbaum's Speaking of Higher Education: The Academic's Book of Quotations, reminded me of my visit to the
writers' museum in Dublin. Passing each object in the exhibit case such as a typewriter or journal activated an audio clip
with the voice of the writer giving a reading from a work or poem. What Birnbaum does in this compilation is invoke the voices
of university fathers and presidents, statesmen, professors and authors on the higher learning. How fortunate for us that
Birnbaum has done all the reading and provided the Cliff notes from legendary giants such as Woodrow Wilson and Robert Maynard
Hutchins along with authors Oscar Wilde, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Mark Twain, Booker T. Washington and suffragist Susan B. Anthony
to contemporary luminaries Clark Kerr and P. F. Kluge and Derek Bok. For the first pass, it is a read cover to cover-I found
it impossible to put down. This is a treasure trove of wisdom from some of the most eloquent voices in the English language-some
you will ponder thoughtfully, others will make you laugh out loud. Birnbaum has written extensively on higher education and
has grouped the quotations thoughtfully and expertly into Four Sections: Higher Education and Society related to purpose and
social issues. Section Two on Academic Affairs including policy, learning, research, scholarship and teaching. Section Three
consists of Institutions and Processes-the campus, institutions, governance and administration and management. The final section
covers the educational roles of the faculty, the students, and the President. The book can be read again following the author
index as well as the subject index. For example, in the entries on "corporalization," the words of the sociologist Thorstein
Veblen spoken in 1918 reverberate today. Almost a century ago he cautioned about erosion of the ends for which the university
is maintained through imposing "standards and tests, in the place of personal conference, guidance and association between
teachers and students." Or imagine finding in one collection some of the pith of the likes of Friederich W. Nietzscke, William
James, Anton Chekhov, T. S. Eliot, William Butler Yeats and Alfred North Whitehead. To me, it is only fitting to end with
a quotation from Robert M. Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, "The real University is a state of mind. It
is that great heritage of rational thought that has been brought down to us through the centuries and which does not exist
at any specific location." Robert Birnbaum's Speaking of Higher Education provides the road signs.
