This book shows readers how to have the marriage of their dreams. It provides expert advice on financial planning for two, sex, juggling two careers, religious differences, the holidays, legal decisions, household tasks, and more. That's not all, along with expert opinions, it includes worksheets, questionnaires and checklists to follow. Her book is organized in a very simple manner making easy for reader to practise. I am hoping that the author will write updated version for years 2000 and on.....looking forward to a new book and continuos education.

Again, a wonderful guide to offbeat Shakespeare

Review Date: 2001-04-16
This book is attractive, sturdy and is formatted well. That being said, the content is equally stellar. The author knows a lot about each piece, and provides the background you need to make the character come alive at an audition, or just in your mind for reading. There are footnotes to the language that are useful, and the speeches themselves are constructed nicely and are good choices for any level of Shakespeare performer. MY only complaint, which isn't that important, is that the characters are not studied with as much depth as you would like if you were reading this book for literary pleasure. But it does give this book as an actors guide a sense of poetic freedom and freedom of creativity. Also good is the previous volume "Alternative Shakespeare Auditions for Women." Don't expect Juliet scenes or Beatrice monologues--- the "alternative" characters and speeches of Shakespeare get their 15 minutes! Recommended for anyone who has every wanted to be a Shakespeare "snob" at auditions and freshen up your Bard inventory. :O)

Like its counterpart, "Alternative Shakespeare Auditions for Women", this book is an excellent resource for the actress. It provides unconventional monologues that, while not as well-known as Juliet's balcony or Viola's ring scene, are Shakespearean gems and are sure to spark the interest of the director. There are good choices for older actresses, as well as some teen/twenties pieces that break the ingenue mold or put a different spin on the stereotypes. Also included are good, solid tips on auditioning for and acting in Shakespeare. This is a wonderfully useful book.

Who knows musicals better?

Review Date: 2000-07-26
There are few better ways of understanding a show than by reading the words of the critics who review it. Hits or flops, big names or no names, this is an extremely comprehensive book of a dizzying number of shows, with excerpts from the critics' opening night reviews. Steven Suskin makes some cuts here and there, and offers his own thoughts about the shows, but the critics are the stars of this book, and shine they do. There are some wonderful reviews of hits and flops alike, and the totality of reviews help paint a unique and irresistible picture of the shows and Broadway itself.

You're in a restaurant. The wine is good, the food is better and the laughter is loud. All of the sudden, someone stops and yells "ONE LINE! A song, played on a solo saxaphone . . ." and you shout out "That's from "Miss Saigon!'"

If the above situation seems familiar, then "More Opening Nights on Broadway : A Critical Quotebook ofthe Musical Theatre from 1965 Through 1981" is for you! A book for those of us who love theatre with a passion, especially the mistakes! You can not have a library of musicals/theater literature without this book.

So your cat won't play with you and the only things on TV are "The Psychic Friends Hotline" and "Alligators: the way they love today?" Curl up in a big overstuffed chair and read about your favorite musical. Guaranteed to lift your spirits. You'll relish every fact, every mistake, every juicy tidbit. Then you'll call up your best friend and say "Hey, did you know what happened on the set of "My Fair Lady?'"

Don't think! Impulse buy! You won't regret it.

Great thoughts from well-known people from around the world. I would have liked to have seen more biographical information on each person, though. Great variety. Scholars, writers, artists, and also some award-winning teachers, not to mention many Nobel Prize Winners, Presidents, and World leaders. Can't wait for the next one!

My mother sent this to me for Mother's Day, and it is the best book I have ever seen of this kind. My mom sends me this type of thing frequently. This book, I couldn't stop looking at the artworks and reading the quotes. My daughter who is four also loved it and picked out all the little girls that she said were her. It would really touch the heart of every mother.

Although we are to never judge a book by it's cover, I am so glad that I did just that. I instantly fell in love with this book's famous print of "The Three Ages" by Gustav Klimt on the jacket. As I scanned the pictures within I knew the book was coming home with me, and that I would be ordering and sending a copy to all of my friends and family. As a mother and an obstetrical nurse it was a pure pleasure to find that in most of the portraits selected the mother is shown nursing her infant, the perfect bond. The phrases, quotes and narrations are beautifuly chosen and arranged as progression through a childs life. A superb gift for any woman and a delight to find on any coffee table!

What men think (mistakenly)

Absolutely the MOST entertaining and funniest book ever published on the subject of how men have thought of women over the written history of our existence. All women should have this book in their personal collection and read it often to keep the laughter going. Share it with the women in your lives, too. All women deserve to laugh this hard at the ignorance of the men quoted in this book. Tama Starr is brilliant.

Vivid, pungent yes-no re boys v girls!

Review Date: 1997-08-14
Where else can one exult in what we all know re the relative status of the sexes if not in this titillating tome by TStarr? Read it. You will be amazed, as I am, by what generations of smarter-than-we folks have said (and known) about how boys look at girls and vice versa. But don't look at it. The pix and illustrations are unnecessary attempts at dressing up what by text alone is entertaining, historical, pertinent and altogether valid and fascinating. If you don't own it, buy it, if only for the casual remarks that will make you a hit at any cocktail party

Great humor for kids and adults

Review Date: 2002-10-27
This is a very funny book. Robert Bender has polled thousands of school children on the best, the worst and the silliest advice they have to offer. There are gems such as "You're only a kid once -- get in trouble while you can" and "Never save your page with gum". Each page has four or five quotes with connected, humorous illustrations. A fun book to read a bit at a time. Might be useful book in a school setting during a unit about quotations or advice. This would make a wonderful present for a child in your life.

Sage Advice from the Young.....
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-18
Robert Bender, author of Lima Beans Would Be Illegal, polled thousands of schoolchildren around the country to find out what important advice they would give other kids and grown-ups, wrote it all down, and came up with this must read, down to earth book, Never Eat Anything That Moves: Good, Bad, and Very Silly Advice from Kids. Some entries are thoughtful... "Be the kind of person that you would like to know." "Old people aren't as old as you think." "Your worst may be someone else's best." Some are silly... "Don't cross the monkey bars without underwear." "Spraying your hair with milk and then drying it doesn't dye your hair blonde." "Make sure the fish is dead before you flush it." And some are just plain weird... "Don't put a bee on a leash." "Never eat a magnet when you have braces." "Use Brussels sprouts for golf balls." But each piece of sage advice is kid tested and filled with insight, wisdom, and definitely, lots of humor. So as Mr Bender tells us at the end... "Don't forget to have fun when you grow up. We're all kids at heart." Read, learn, and enjoy!

Once in a while a handy, little book comes along that should be required reading for every college grad seeking his or her fortune in the game of business. Richard Stiegele's book, Never Read A Newspaper At Yor Desk, is jammed-packed with extremely valuable advice from a seasoned pro. The author also has a tremendous sense of humour which is a rare quality in these somber, dog-eat-dog days of downsizing and cutbacks. The book contains 467 statements as well as an index with topics ranging from acquisitions to trendy books. Stiegele's pearls of wisdom are concise, practical, easy to read and no doubt worth its weight in gold. It's a book that has earned its place in your business library.

I love the title of this book!

Review Date: 2004-12-29
When I saw the title of this book, I couldn't resist. I love books of quotes, and this one is excellent. Over 200 pages of quotes, which are divided by topic area. A great book to ponder and think about. I especially enjoy finding quotes that match current leadership challenges or opportunities, as I find the best way to often lead through a new situation or effect change or transitions is with a quote that helps people see the point from a different perspective. This book is full of very thought provoking material.

I will leave you a few to whet your appetite, and then I encourage you to grab a copy of this book.

"Care for the truth more than what people think" - Aristotle (Page 93)

"We have this fantasy that if we just have enough information, we can control events" - Barbara Biesecker (Page 123)

"The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it's the same problem you had last year" - John Dulles (Page 165)

This is a great book, for a great price. Enjoy.
