Good book to take when traveling and you want a quick read when delayed or waiting at the gate. It gets tiresome it you sit and just read it, but to read some pages at a time and then put it down for a while, it is quite interesting.

Read their first book a few days ago(I've gotten their calendars for a few years) and wanted more. And this was as funny as I hoped. A great collection of mind-boggingly stupid quotes from the famous -- sports stars, politicians, movie stars etc.

The Newest History Book you MUST HAVE!

Review Date: 2006-03-23
This book is so wonderful to read! It is a fun romp through history from a very REAL perspective! Everyone knows the story of Christopher Columbus and who the first person to walk on the moon was... This "Marvel of Reading" will bring it all home! How about the REAL advice for people to brush their teeth with SOOT. How about the reference from a book written in 1936 "Ladies do not chew gum"? The entries are very funny and the pictures are even better! Emphatically not a practical resource for contemporary women

Advice From The Attic: Precious Pearls Of Wisdom On Beauty, Charm, And Etiquette is a lighthearted guide of advice for women, compiled by Monica Dale who has assembled a variety of authentic excerpts from the 19th and 20th centuries. Emphatically not a practical resource for contemporary women, Advice From The Attic is intended for amusement and humor, as it preserves memories of the extreme lengths of what society used to expect and demand from women scarcely a few generations ago. Eyebrow-raising articles include "The Dangers of Bobbed Hair"; "Banishing Slang from the Vocabulary"; "The Charm of Hiding Intelligence"; and many more. A fascinating window through time into the social attitudes of the past, Advice From The Attic is unabashedly funny, often surprising, and truly fascinating reading from cover to cover.

A great collection of wisdom

African American Wisdom by Reginald McKnight is a very nicely put together book from its African theme cover to the layout in the book. The content is grouped together into various categories. It's a great read for anyone who wants to get a little more depth into a culture and continent which is often ignored, but yet has such a strong presence in America. This could make for a great series so I hope Mr. McKnight will continue his good work. A nice collection and gift.

African American Wisdom is short & to the point!

This orange & black covered book fits perfectly into your pocket, is pleasingly laid out & filled with delightful, witty, caustic & familiar quotes from four centuries of African Americans in all walks of life, from writers to politicians, athletes to singers, actors to physicians. From the pillars of society to the anonymous.

In this is lovely little book regional folk sayings are given a place of honor & make so much sense in these days of wishy-washy political correctness. Often tart, frequently pithy & sometimes stainless steel sharp - these observations range all over the life & times of being Black in America to being in Love to simply being alive.

A useful collection of thoughts, both long & short, literate & vernacular. Some have been ringing in my ears all my life, most are new pearls to tweak & open my foggy mind. This would make a fine Kwanza gift or for graduation. For my full review to check out: [my website]

I have been collecting Alice in Wonderland items for nearly 30 years and I am happy to add this book to my collection. The information is presented in a format that is accessible to the general public and not just the Alice afficianado. The book production is also wery pleasing. The wonder of Alice is how she shows up all over the globe in so many ways 140 years after her conception. I think the title of the book understates to what extent Alice lives in our modern popular culture.

I love this book. I received it yesterday at my office and read what I could on my lunch hour. I couldn't wait to get home. I bought this because I wanted to eventually introduce my 1 year old granddaughter to "Alice In Wonderland." Imagine my surprise to find that I can start reading to her now. There are extended nursery rhymes, funny sayings and a fascinating dialogue through the whole book. The illustrations are superb! I can start my granddaughter on the "white rabbit, calico cat, the queen" as well as "Alice" just from these wonderful illustrations. I can highly recommend this book for children and also adults who enjoy Lewis Carroll's wit. I cannot write enough good things about it.

I've had this book for years and have used it often as a source of inspirational quotes and stories. Stu Weber is calling men to a higher standard - God's standard - and he does it in a powerful and encouraging way. This is a great gift to give new fathers or to brothers in Christ.

A collection of wisdom from the Lord's annointed servants of past and present. This book has been an aid in allowing God to reveal Jesus' character to me during my quiet and intimate moments with Him. 'Along the Road to Manhood' is my choice for devotionals.

A great guide to offbeat Shakespeare--- NO BALCONY SCENES!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-16
This book is attractive, sturdy and is formatted well. That being said, the content is equally stellar. The author knows a lot about each piece, and provides the background you need to make the character come alive at an audition, or just in your mind for reading. There are footnotes to the language that are useful, and the speeches themselves are constructed nicely and are good choices for any level of Shakespeare performer. MY only complaint, which isn't that important, is that the characters are not studied with as much depth as you would like if you were reading this book for literary pleasure. But it does give this book as an actors guide a sense of poetic freedom and freedom of creativity. Also good is the next volume "MORE Alternative Shakespeare Auditions for Women." Don't expect Juliet scenes or Beatrice monologues--- the "alternative" characters and speeches of Shakespeare get their 15 minutes! Recommended for anyone who has every wanted to be a Shakespeare "snob" at auditions and freshen up your Bard inventory. :O)

Very usefull!

I found this book indispencable as an actress. Many auditions call for alternative shakespearian monologues and this book has many good monologues combined with essential study notes.

J.S. Salt is a sharp editor who knows how to stay out of the way and let his subjects do the talking, so the book has a strong sense of unpolished truth to it. Though some of the entries tend toward the cute, the rest are touching, funny, and straightforward. Kid-wisdom is absolutely refreshing (especially in an election year), and Mr. Salt obviously has a great love and respect for his contributors. It's a perfect companion to his earlier Always Kiss Me Goodnight.

J. S. Salt does it again! This is one of the most charming books that I've ever read! This heart-warming and clever book makes you realize just how simple life can be and will bring you back to a simpler time in your life as you read it. I recommend it for any parent or anyone who works with children. It is also VERY FUNNY to read the kids' handwriting! Trust me--you won't be sorry you bought this book!

inspiring and thought provoking

Review Date: 2006-06-12
This is a wonderful collection of short, thought provoking verses followed by the author's thoughts and/or explanations of the verses. It's not the kind of book to read through in one sitting - more like something you'll want to dip into now and then, reading a few pages then pondering them over the course of the day. In fact, it would make a great meditation aid. The verses are organized into thematic chapters, making it easy to find one that suits your mood. Just don't let anyone borrow your copy - I did and had a tough getting it back!

This book is to the arts and the creative experience what Aldous Huxley's PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY was to philosophy and the mystical experience; a compendium of memorable quotes and reflections direct from creative people throughout history. A marvelous source book to keep somewhere close by for easy and frequent reference.

Highly recommended. A wonderful source of quotations of spiritual wisdom from an international array of artists, philosphers, spiritual leaders, etc. I have returned to it again and again for refreshment and inspiration. Astrid Fitzgerald has provided us with a gift from the heart.
She is also a very fine artist (...).

You Can't Let This One Get Away

Bad Predictions definitely has something for everyone. Even a person who doesn't enjoy books won't be able to put this one down after the first glance. It's divided into sections so everyone can flip to their favorite field first. Such as Society, Fashion, Transportation, Technology etc.

I found it not only fun and entertaining, but an educating and even humbling experience. While some of the bad predictions, are humorous, some such as "you'll never need more than 640k" make you realize how much things can change even in a few years. What's considered impossible today can be second nature tomorrow.

I think I enjoyed predictions from the early 1900's the best. But, I predict everyone will have their own set of favorites. Like Laura's other book, "The Names Familiar", "Bad Predictions" is a perfect ice breaker and conversation maker. It's a great coffee table book, and it's easy to read. Congratulations to Laura Lee for another great winner!

Glad I didn't say that!

As an educator, I love having stories to share about those who thought they knew what they were talking about and didn't. Too often we take what others' say too seriously and here are wonderful examples of what people said that weren't so insigtful. The book is a delightful read full of lots of laughs as well as moments of deep contemplation as things hit a little too close to home. Thanks to Ms. Lee for another great book.
