Great Refresher in Analytical Philosophy --maybe the best

I found this copy last week at Waterstone in London . It made me feel the plane ride was very short! I should have bought a couple. This is a great book for a refresher in analytical philosophy: pleasant, clear. Great training for people who tend to forget elementary relationships.
I did not know that JAP was a logician. Go buy this book!
The only competition is "Think" by Blackburn (rather boring).

IN John Allen Paulos's book 'I think therefore I laugh: An alternative approach to Philosophy', he is inspired by Ludwig Wittgenstein's statement that one can write a comprehensive Philosophy book consisting of jokes alone. If you get the joke, you get the philosophical point. After reading this book, I tend to agree. If we really think about it, it's surprising how many jokes we crack everyday; mundane, sophisticated, derogatory, or otherwise, mostly at the expense of others. Many of these jokes are downright stupid, and we are aware of that. Now in this book, Paulos explains why they illustrate important points of philosophy. And in doing so, he sure gives us a rollicking, rib-tickling time. Paulos weaves an extremely entertaining web of anectodes, humor, and language puzzles, each time demonstrating a central philosophical point. In doing so, he also pays due homage to more or less most famous classic and contemporary philosophers including Russell, Wittgenstein, Hempel, Dewey, Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Hume, Descartes, Kant, Quine and Popper, among others. He uses examples from daily life, indicating the paradoxes we unknowingly indulge in during our everyday hustle- bustle. He inspires us to look about for such examples, and most importantly have a good laugh about them.

Case in point. Today, I started to read the manual of a computer program named SYBYL which I am supposed to learn. All of you will know how mind numbingly unforgiving a manual reading session can be. However, my spirits were immediately uplifted when, on the first page of the manual, I saw the following typed statement:
THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY BLANK
I got the joke; I got the paradox. I laughed- thanks to Paulos.

Highlights of the book include a hilarious dialogue between two most unlikely men: Bertrand Russell and Groucho Marx, trapped in an elevator on a 'virtual' level in the Empire State Building. Their conversation is completely nonsensical, each talking from his unique point of view. But just like Lewis Carroll's nonsense, it makes perfect sense. All through the book, Paulos uses two proverbial scapegoats, George and Martha, to illustrate the finer points of philosophical thought through seemingly idiotic, bizzare and generally hilarious conversations. In doing so, he touches upon reductionism, syllogism, sylligism, opportunism, and most of the other famous "isms". A few examples:

Everybody loves a lover
George does not love himself
Hence George does not love Martha

Illogical as the above argument looks, by the rules of logic, Paulos explains that it makes perfect sense. Or consider this "Proof that God exists"

1. God exists
2. Both these statements are false.

Welcome to the world of paradoxes! Some thorny thinking convinces us that irrespective of whether the second statement is true or false, the first statement HAS to be true. In fact, you can substitute any statement in place of the first one (For example, 'George Bush was in love with Elizabeth Taylor'). The second one will guarantee that it's true.
How about this one. Its a chilly winter night and Martha meets George in front of his house.

Martha: George, what are you doing?
George: Oh, I am looking for my car keys. I lost them near that bush there.
Martha: So why aren't you looking for them there?
George: Because its brighter here and I can see better.

Some of the examples are outright stupid, great examples of PJs that all of us crack sometime or the other.

Martha: That's the last straw! I have had enough of this. I wash my hands of the whole business.
George: A good idea. You can wash your neck too.

Paulos says that this dialogue actually demonstrates an important philosophical principle.

The title of the third section is: "The Titl of This Section Contains Three Erors"
Can you spot them? If yes, you would have unearthed a very important philosophical 'classification of classes or sets', having deep implications for math and logic.

Another examples of this 'classification of classes':
'Robert Benchley once remarked, "There may be said to be two classes of people in the world; those who constantly divide the people of the world into two classes, and those who do not." He should have added paradoxically that he belongs to the latter class.

I could go on and on! But I don't want to give away the wonder of the book. It is a truly refreshing read, for the sheer reason that it shows us how we can constantly laugh at others, life, and most importantly ourselves, and have an educational experience doing it. I think it would be a fascinating experience for us to glance around everyday, and have a look at the idiosynchracies that we indulge in, the jokes that we crack, and the criticisms that we dispense, and endure, knowingly and unknowingly demonstrating philosophical insights. Paulos tried to convince us that there is more to daily life than we think, and that philosophy need not be a separate 'subject' to be studied. It is a part of our everyday where-withal and exemplified in all its glory in all our relationships. I had a ball of a time reading this book, and I think that you will too.

This is a wonderful joining of laughter (which nearly everyone does) and mathematics/logic (which not as many do well as they should be able to - me included). I would hesitate to use it as a supporting text in a mathematics, logic or philosophy class but many of the examples given would be great teacher's aids. (The book is sometimes too technical for students and its technical details may alienate some of them - in my estimation anyway.) But I have written elsewhere (see 'Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea') that I believe mathematics education will be greatly assisted by humanising it, putting people back into it (who could not be fascinated by Ramanujan, Erdos, Gauss and company?). The writings of Paulos would be a great tool in this direction and I wouldn't hesitate in prescribing 'Innumeracy', for example, as a required text. This book, however, would be a great source of ideas for a teacher or an interested reader like myself. And there are some very good laughs too!

Humor disquised as philosophy or vice versa?

It takes a rare writer to synthesize Descartes, Russell and Marx - Groucho, that is. Somehow John Paulos manages to write a treatise on analytical philosophy (logic, self-referential statements, language recognitition) using examples from humor. Yet perhaps that is the story - that humor comes from logical contradiction.

Written for the non-philosopher, this concise book is packed with great learning and quite a few laughs as well. Definitely a worthwhile read.

I think, therefore I review

Paulos is entertaining, awesome, etc. My first book by him I couldn't put down. I was so intrigued with Innumeracy that I even had a hard time finding time to do my math homework. Ironically, Innumeracy was "advertised" in the math book that I was working in. Really, any books by this genius is worth your time and money. "I Think" reminds me a little of Lewis Carroll, word and math games. Paulos does what all of these math wizards out there claim they can do: make math more palatable and interesting. I tried, "Laugh With Math." What? I wasn't laughing! Paulos, I believe, doesn't even have to try.

If there is one thing from my childhood that has remained a part of my life as an adult, it is my love for that fat, orange, cranky tabby cat named Garfield. I recently received "In Dog Years I'd Be Dead: Garfield at 25" as a present. It is a coffee table book that looks back at the history of the fat, orange tabby. This book is an extremely comprehensive look at everything Garfield. It goes into details about everything from commercial ads to the classic cartoon series "Garfield and Friends". As a diehard Garfield fan and an artist, I appreciated seeing the earlier, rough sketches of Garfield strips. This book may be a couple of years old but it certainly covers pretty much everything that the fat cat has given to the public. I especially loved seeing some of the more sillier photos of Jim Davis and Garfield. Another favorite moment is the section with all the counterfeit Garfield products. For some reason, I find something fascinating about something as ugly as those counterfeit products. "In Dog Years I'd Be Dead..." is the ideal coffee table book for diehard Garfield fans. Great intro by columnist Dave Barry.

Shermans Lagoon has to be the best comic I have ever read! (and trust me I read a lot of comics) This book deserves no less than 10 stars,it is so funny because of its cast of characters. They range from a fish genious to a big mean giant squid. But the top character has to be Hawethorne the hermit crab who seems to endlessly take advantage of Sherman the shark. I recently discovered these so-called 3-D stereograms. I think they are SO cool! Somehow I missed out on their popularity phase during the 1990's. (However, I do remember one Seinfeld episode where Elaine's boss, Mr. Pitt, was trying to find the 3-D image in a painting, but I didn't realize just how neat the whole thing really was.) I have looked through several books now. I feel this book is probably the best. There are over 200 designs to view and discover the hidden 3-D images. And the price is quite reasonable, considering the hours of entertainment it will give you. Highly recommend it.

If you like Magic Eye images, this book will blow you away. When I look at some of my other 3-D book images, I'll think, "I get it - it's a shark." When I look at these images, I'll say out loud, "Woah." My wife will think I spilt hot coffee on my foot. But I didn't. I don't even drink coffee. And it's not a small book - there are 200 full-page images in it.

I got this book for our family for Christmas. The pictures that pop out are usually the same as the picture that made it,if that makes sense. There is a picture made up of shamrocks...the picture inside is a shamrock. There is no surprise in the picture, which to me isn't as fun. I dodn't appreciate the topless mermaid picture on the title page and last page of the book, I don't think that perticular picture is kid friendly. Otherwise the book is what I expected.

It's all in the way you look at it.

I don't know how long these stereograms have been around ,but their complexity and fascination has really taken off with the application of computers to this art form. As a kid,I was fascinated with the device that sat on a small table at my Grandmothers, which was used to view double picture photograph cards, which appeared in 3-D when looked at through the viewer. It was probably manufactured sometime around 1900 and maybe even earlier. There were photos of WWI and lots of other things that you saw from that time sold as postcards.Later, after WWII, we saw much the same thing sold in huge numbers and found in virtually very home, namely "ViewMaster". Then, in the 50's stereograph technology was employed in motion pictures ,where the audience watched a blurry screen which came to 3D reality by wearing "special" red&Green cardboard glasses. I remember some wild action films where the whole audience was petrified by spears coming straight at them. Then there were birds and other objects that seemed to come right out of the screen and fly over your head.
For the last 20 years we have seen stereographs in books like this;and getting better all the time.
I have written reviews on several others;but this is the largest one so far, with 200 state- of the-art sterograms. The big advance in recent years is that we can view them without the aid of special devices or viewers...just your own eyes.
I suppose there are a number of categories these images can fall into;but mainly they are the type where the object is quite obvious in 2-dimension and then turns into a 3-Dimensional image. Then there is the other thing where the whole picture is just undiscernable colors and/or patterns, but no obvious imgge. Then ,while staring at the picture an object comes into view almost as a ghost. Some stereographs do both of these things at the same time.
As I went through this collection ,I attempted to pick a favorite;but in the end I wasn't really able to.
The one on pg. 24 ,a simple 2-D transformation is simply in clarity in both dimensions;as the Chicago skyline on pg.167. As for hidden or ghost images;I really liked the Shamrocks on pg 11 and 79.
Then for one which gives no hint whatsoever of any hidden object,I like the Star of David on pg.81 and the Point Burst in pg.26,which is utterly and completely hidden. Then how about the pyramids on pg.103,a little difficult to "get" ,but when you do,well worth the effort.
Then there was the Glad Plaid on pg.25 which I couldn't "get" at all.Then I turned it 180 Degrees,still no luck.Then I turned it 90 Degrees--Bingo!!!
Then I found that many could be seen turning the pages 180 Degrees.Another thing to do is;once you see the 3-D image, and while keeping it in focus, slowly rotate the page and see it disappear.
Overall, the book is loaded with some great images;but I can't but suspect we are still in for some exciting treats in this "electronic"art form in the future.

If 'Iron John' was the iconic journey into the masculine, 'Iron Joe Bob' is the journey to the base of the masculine tailbone. Not only is Briggs' parody genuinely funny(whether or not you have read, 'Iron John'), but he does match the original author's work, image for image and metaphor for metaphor. The difference is that rather than working with deep and brooding images, Briggs makes his point(enjoy the pun) using deep and...uh...erect images.

If you took 'Iron John' very seriously, please do put a bit of space between that read and this one. You need to retreat briefly from the woods in order to recapture your sense of humor. No, we are not laughing at you, we're laughing with you. Once you can use your drum to set your beer on and start a fire with your corn-nut breath, you are ready to take on 'Iron Joe Bob.' Pick up your Wooly Spear and get to work.

The book is an entertaining and surprisingly literary read, rife with classic devices and characters that we have all met on our various journeys. Briggs uses them, familiar scenarios and skillful wit to hone his point again and again.

Enjoy the forest.

Our greatest living scholar researches a voluminous amount of technical and arcane texts-- Robert Graves's "The White Goddess", including the footnotes in Welsh, being a case in point---and concludes that our only hope to recover our Ancient Missing Spear and become authentic men, is to worship the One Great Breasted Earth Mother.

( Which in his fantasies, for reasons that he'd rather not dwell upon, is named Monique.)

Lovingly dedicated to "Bobby Bly" this book is the REAL story of "The Men's Movement" !

How thousands of milksops, sissies, jellyfish, doormats, Star Trek re-run addicts living in their parent's basements, 99lb weaklings and other assorted [people] have "Slayed Their Inner Weenies " by gettting in touch with their Missing Spear through yelling, drum beating, ripping their shirts off, and other toxic-freeing ceremonies at one of Joe Bob's legendary "I'M NOT A WIMP, GOLDANG IT!" weekends.

...Re-discovering Indigenous Manhood Initiatory Rituals (i.e; "Get a Job " Chapter 23) Joe Bob takes us on a mythically charged journey of self discovery through cosmic archetypes hitherto never explored.

Though my local paper does not get this strip, even I can tell that it has recently blossomed. In its earlier stages it seemed cutsie and corny, now that Pasquale is talking, and Rose's alter-egos are in full gear, we are full experiencing the world of this adorable family. Roses frequent meetings with her ladybig, Pasquales guardian angels slip ups and Jimbo's constant teasing (Pasquale! Did you remember to pay the moon bill?") have kept me laughing and sympathizing. A strip to go down in history.

Although I admit to being a long time Calvin and Hobbes fan, I have to say that I've grown to prefer Rose is Rose. I love the strip and all of it's sweetness - even selfish cousin Clem. I've seen a lot of people compare this strip to Calvin but I have to say that Pasquale holds his own. While Calvin and his father have anything but a loving relationship, Pasquale worships his father and the teasing between the two is always a gentle sort.

For anyone who loves a family strip without biting sarcasm this is the book for you.

As a corporate consultant and trainer, I'm always looking for ways to increase my effectiveness in helping clients really learn the material at hand. Like many, I don't consider myself particularly funny, and worry that I could do more harm than good by trying too hard to incorporate humor into workshops.

Doni Tamblyn does a terrific job not only showing the reader how to easily and safely insert humor, she also references fascinating research that clearly supports why humor is so critical to the learning process. The book is written in a friendly, approachable style that makes it a fun read, and I appreciate the handy index to the "95 Ways" listed at the beginning of the book for quick reference.

I highly recommend this book not only to other professional trainers, but to speakers and presenters of all types. Personally, after trying some of Tamblyn's strategies, I not only feel more confident in front of a room, but hey, I'm having more fun too. You can't beat that!

Laugh and Learn!

"Laughter and Learning"

I'm reading this book, and I sense it is what I have been waiting for. I believe Doni Tamblyn has really nailed it. She's given structure to what seems to be the very complex art of effective teaching. I'll start giving her methods a try by using the "smooth" vs "crunchy" approach for initiating group/team work, and by finally using some of those cartoons I've been accumulating for years.

I'm also thinking about how I could apply some of her ideas to my online distance learning courses, where teaching and learning are not in a traditional classroom. This environment lacks the needed spontaneity, but I could see what would happen if I divided my online class into small discussion teams competing for bonus points for "fabulous prizes" to be awarded at our once-per-week lab meetings.

I appreciate that Ms. Tamblyn has combined her comedic experience with Dewey's ideas, theories of motivation, accelerated learning, and optimal/compatible brain learning, the
Koran, the Talmud, famous quotes, tips on psychology and comedic delivery, and has taken the time to share her synthesis of them in a book. Her Laugh and Learn is not only a great how-to book, but also a scholarly piece of work. I don't usually find how-to books with an index, references, endnotes, so many examples, and a case study! (Her "anatomy of a creative learning module" is precious.) Thank you, Ms. Tamblyn!"

Wow, am I glad I bought this book!

After 19 years of school, I now reserve weighty treatises for subjects like international law. What I needed as a trainer of nonprofits in proposal writing and development, was some good technique in leavening what can be awfully dry subjects (after all, they're about getting money) with a whole lot of fun. Ms. Tamblyn's "95 Ways" sparked my creative juices and I use her techniques whenever I teach. Plus, I've been incorporating some of her exercises into my workshops to teach nonprofit folks how to leaven their presentations when they get that much longed for meeting with a potential donor.

This is a "grab it and go" book that fits in your briefcase along with your handouts. If you're a trainer - nonprofit, corporate or otherwise - you know the feeling of "dead air." During the break, turn to almost any page in "Laugh and Learn" for a technique or an exercise that will uncrink your brain and ramp the room up for your returning learners.

You won't become an expert in the science of humor with "Laugh and Learn." But, hey, they give degrees to people for that kind of in-depth knowledge. As a trainer, you will go as far as you like in incorporating humor into the business of teaching - safely, judiciously and successfully.

Thanks, Ms. Tamblyn. You are a funny lady, and you know how to teach what you know!

LAUGH AND LEARN--A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER'S FERVENT HOPE

Recently, an old friend suggested that I read Doni Tamblyn's Laugh and Learn, a "how to" book that delineates various exercises, all intended to increase creative thought. At first I was reluctant to read the book--as a high school teacher I am bombarded by teaching methodologies, each one claiming to be the magic key that will unlock student achievement and motivation. So I was surprised when I discovered that Laugh and Learn was 1) witty 2) entertaining 3) well-researched 4) practical and, best of all, actually works!

Through a combination of data compiled from brain-compatible research, and an enormous catalogue of easy to read, easy to implement student activities, Tamblyn makes the compelling case that creative thought flourishes best when learners are first instructed to avoid being clever and original. While the ultimate goal may be to reach heights of innovative thinking, Tamblyn assures us that such heights will more than likely be reached when the learner's mind is relaxed enough to begin making the connections that distinguish the truly interesting thought from the mundane.

In each chapter, Tamblyn discusses the hows and whys of encouraging learners to lose their anxiety and increase their joy as they discover the creative process within themselves. Although the book is a virtual treasure trove of fun activities for students, my favorites have been the "mind map" and the "finish the sentence ball toss." (You have to read the book to find out why these activities are such big fun!) Again, the idea behind each activity is to "sneak up" on the creative drive before it has a chance to realize that it is being scrutinized and therefore shut down like a wall flower at a jr. high school dance.

At least one or two days a week, I incorporate a Laugh and Learn activity into my lesson plans. My students love the program. And their test scores and projects reflect the influence of Tamblyn's techniques upon greater retention of content and increased motivation for success. This is nothing short of a miracle, when you consider the natural reluctance of teenagers to try anything that might make them look "uncool" in front of their classmates.

Laugh and Learn is both brilliant and of enormous practical benefit--two qualities not often found in teacher training manuals. Tamblyn's book should occupy a special place on every educator's desk. Five stars, Ms. Tamblyn, five stars and more...

My mom got me this book for Christmas four years ago, and I could not put it down. Back then, I wasn't really reading for pleasaure, but I knew this book would really get me started! I found Chapman's autobiography to be rather silly, but serious at the same time. He has been my tied-for-first favorite Python (next to Idle) since the first time I watched any of their sketches and The Holy Grail, but this book made me love him even more. I really got to see a different side of this comic genius, and reading about his struggles to gain acceptance and respect, along with his trials when it came to put down the booze, made me only appreciate him that much more. Four years later, this is book is still in my top-three favorites of all time! I would recommend this book to any Python fan.

Is there any way to encapsulate Graham Chapman's great comedic talent? No. But he tries in his own autobiography, anyway. A gift to those of us who truly appreciate the absurd from the master himself, this book is a must for anyone who enjoys Monty Python and those who just don't get it. After reading this book, I feel I understand this great pouf even more than watching the Python movies.

I'm just sad that his last video appearance was in an Iron Maiden video...

One of the best I've read in a long time.

I really enjoyed this book even though it is kind of confusing and wierd. Graham Chapman has always been my favorite Python because of his humor but this book shows antother side to him. If you don't like him before you read it you wiil afterwards. A bit after the end is touching and also very funny. This book isn't for everyone and you might not like it even if you are a Monty Python fan. If you are looking for a laugh a minute book in true Monty python style look somewhere else. Not to say that the book doesn't have some funny parts but it is also pretty serious. I also wouldn't recomend it to anyone under the age of 13 because some of the contents of the book aren't apropriate for smaller children. But if you think you will like it by all means read it because it really is a wonderful book.

Not your typical autobiography by not your typical writer. A Liar's Autobiography is a now-classic look at the life of Graham, written by Graham (and others) at a time when he felt that, due to his alcoholism, he was not long for planet earth. This proved to not be true (he survived another 10 years and did not die from alcohol-related causes but cancer). At turns hilarious, silly, touching and sad, "ALA" will leave the reader with a much greater sense of the looniest of all the Pythons who was, at heart, a very shy and serious man. By all means BUY THIS.

"If it makes your tail wag it's good" is only one of the thought provoking words of wisdom in these colorfully illustrated lessons that dogs can teach us about unconditional love and happiness. Every time I turn through these beautifully written pages my tail wags harder each time. Thank You Amy Jordon Smith for sharing your biscuit.

LIFE IS SHORT; EAT BISCUITS is beautifully illustrated, and through the eyes of a puppy, reinvents so many of life's "words of wisdom"...sayings we've repeatedly heard, but unfortunately seldom apply. This book is truly Puppy Chow for the soul; especially for those of us that have experienced the unconditional love bestowed on us by our own "Calvin" puppy. Life is indeed short, so take the time, and share a biscuit with someone you love while enjoying this book. Kudos to the author and illustrator!!!
