I got this book for my mom. The title caught my eye because she had a horrible time finding a dress for my brother's wedding and now she has to look once again for my wedding! She loved it and found it very humorous, basically read it in one night. The only thing I wished is that it would have had a checklist or something like that for the mother of the bride. Overall, great book!

When my daughter became engaged, I got three copies of this book as gifts. I loved it so much that I have given away the two extra copies that I received to friends who will soon be MOBs!

The book is so real, so funny, so poignant. It succinctly summed up the relationship between mothers and daughters as it detailed the intricate and involved planning process for today's weddings. I loved the way Beckerman gave us glimpses of her daughter's growing-up years.

I felt every feeling the author was feeling --- I laughed, I cried, and I called my daughter to read portions to her.

And today....I found the perfect dress!!!

This is basically an autobiographical comic short story, with wacky illustrations to add to the fun. I bought it as a Mother's Day present for my mom right after I got engaged, and we read it aloud together in our favorite spot on the front porch, passing the book when one of us was overcome with laughter -- or tears. Ilene Beckerman can really write, and she does it with devastating humor and tear-jerking poignancy as she explores -- from the front row view of the mother of the bride -- the fun, the fights, the work, the tears, the trials, and often the complete insanity that all contribute to the creation of a beautiful wedding. At the same time, she critically (and beautifully) examines the complex relationship between a mother and her daughter. This short little gem will help you remember the things you appreciate most about your mother, your daughter...or both.

We bought this book for our child who, at 7 years old, doesn't realize that she can beatbox with the best of them... For some crazy reason, she loves and has a talent for making mouthsounds and doing imitations.

This is a really fun book. None of us (child, mother, father) can put it down. It's provided hours of entertainment and laughter.

This book is simple, harmless, good clean fun. What more could you ask for? Even if you aren't a beatboxing whiz -- this book is just plain fun for anyone!

Oh, and one more thing -- our child loves to use it with the babysitter. It's just great for anyone, anytime!

Great Job

Being amazed for a long time by the ability some people show of imitating sounds and voices, and after not having found any websites that offers any ideas on how to imitate sounds, voices and to produce mouth sounds, i came to know Mr. Newman's fantastic work through a pdf document in which he is interviewed, and i decided to buy the book and the truth is that i found it very helpful and full of surprises, for example i didn't know that to bark like a dog you have to inhale, and that the duck quack comes from the cheek! The book is very educating in the sense that it not only gives a nice introduction about how sounds are generated, but also gives detailed step-by-step instructions on how to produce specific sounds.
i think that with practice and fine tuning anybody can learn something interesting and fun from this book.i do recommend it for sound lovers.

This is a fun book. Listening to the CD in the car was also fun and easier for me to make a funny sound. It makes you realize how many mouthsounds you can already do--you just need a context to make it special. The author will tell you that making various mouth sounds is like aerobics for your voice--so you don't end up with an old lady or old man voice when you get to your 70's or 80's.

I have waited for several years to buy this book and when it came not too long ago in the mail, it came just at the right time. Tired of the holiday frenzy and tired of working, this little gem of a book really helps uplift my mood. Of course, my kids are not infants or toddlers anymore, it still brought a smile to my lips and heart. I love being a SAHM even though there have been days when I just wanted to climb the walls. This author definitely has a gift of sharing her outlooks with humor and sweetness.

She covers everything, from raisin poop under the Christmas tree to traveling 800 miles with a sick baby. She shares her thoughts on child rearing from a personal persepective and with humor as well. This book is definitely not a preachy book. It is a book that invites you to sit down and have a cup of tea as you read about another mom's thoughts and stories. It is definitely an uplifting read. You realize among the chaos in your house that you're not alone in this fun and zany adventure called motherhood!

Both books are fantastic. We got a lot of stuff for the baby, but these two books were the best gifts we received, because they touch the heart, made us laugh and really helped us appreciate our new roles in the world. Making the transition from working girl to stay at home mom is such a difficult one. You feel so alone most days. After reading this witty and thoughtful book, I don't feel so alone anymore! I felt as if Mrs. Boehme was writing about me! My husband had to ask me to leave the room because I was chuckling so much he couldn't concentrate on his book. Even if you are a veteran mom, you'll get a kick out of these stories. My favorite was the shopping cart story! LOL! I highly recommend this book to all moms!

I ordered a copy of this book because someone told me that it was a great read. Well, I normally purchase books and never get around to reading the entire book.
This one was different. I didn't want to put it down! I was so immersed in the stories, and I found myself laughing through one chapter, and crying through the next one. It was like I was writing some of the pages. I felt so affirmed on so many levels of Motherhood and of just being a woman in general. It was wonderful to see such rawness on paper. It feels good to know that we all go through these things and that we can talk about them, laugh about them, and learn something along the way.
I loved the book, and I can't wait to read Mrs. Boehme's next book.

Illustrations were well done, however the Dr. Seuss wanna-be writing style lacks interest and fluidity. His attempts at the child-like poetry, ala Dr. Seuss with a Tim Burton twist, only prove that writing simple poetry with rhythym isn't as easy as it looks. All is not lost though, it did make a good beverage coaster.

This book offers the unique and witty humor of Michel Gagne' and lets us in on the insight to his imaginative mind and artwork. The story is that of darkness yet with a twist of humor and morals playing on the artwork that is both creative and very much his own. Highly recommended to anyone who is looking for the not so typical childrens books that we have all grown so weary of.

A Nanny Weighs In...

Review Date: 2008-05-02
Let me start by saying I take care of children for a living and have been doing so for many years. I've worked with many different types of mothers and many different types of children - most of whom I've loved and cherished. But my favorite employers were the moms and dads who had a more lighthearted approach to parenting. My current employer was reading this book and laughing out loud so many times I finally asked her what was so funny. She showed me the book and told me I had to read it when she was done. Well, I've just finished it and I LOVED it. The author covers so many of the hilarious aspects of raising (and working with) toddlers. I especially enjoyed her take on temper tantrums (they are natural - but that doesn't mean we have to enjoy or indulge them always)and I appreciated her laid back approach to her child. I love that she's not crazy uptight about sugar and television (even though I personally believe both should be in moderation)and I think it's great that she encourages other mothers not to get caught up in whether or not their children are picky eaters or polite to a fault. The bottom line is the book made me laugh out loud in every chapter and I couldn't help but wonder if she needs a nanny! I've got references!!

This is the best book that I have read on motherhood. I love that it is written with a sense of humor and I feel so much better after reading it. I know it's not a self help book but it sure did help me to realize I am not alone and there is at least one other mother out there that is just like me! I laughed out loud so many times while reading it and I loved all of the pop culture references. I would reccomend this book to anyone that might need to find a little humor in motherhood once in awhile.

Seriously. Just buy it. You'll be so glad that you did. She's hysterical. The book reads as if your best friend is talking to you. Really. It's that good. (as long as your best friend is funny. Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you). She offers great advice, is non-judgemental, is funny (I don't know if I mentioned that before) and makes you feel GOOD about your own life with toddlers.

So... buy it. :)

Formulaic, sometimes funny, mostly tiresome

Review Date: 2008-04-28
Was it hilarious to me? No.

And I'm going to further preface this review by clearly stating the obvious: this review is my opinion, and I'm allowed to have one.

Some of the author's anecdotes and humorous spins were funny, made me smile and giggle, but nothing was outright hilarious or made me split my sides in laughter. Furthermore, the majority of this book consists of formulaic humor that relies on hyperbolic comparisons, overblown metaphors, facile dishing on and putdowns of pop culture celebrities, putdowns of other moms, and snarky, abrasive comments which did not reveal any particularly brilliant insight. Here's an example of the type of humor that became tiresome to me: "Stick a two-month-old in a swing for two hours and they're as happy as Paula Abdul in an all-night pharmacy, but try taking a three-year-old to the park and getting them to enjoy a swing for more than twenty seconds." *Snoozeville*

I didn't appreciate the author's tone much either. I don't think it's funny to call other moms "bizzotch" (e.g. p. 64). Much of the humor came from a negative place, and I wasn't entertained by that as the other glowing reviews led me to believe I would be. Some of the author's "inner voice" comments were pretty spiteful and didn't help me understand her point of view or encourage me to keep reading although I did manage to read this book all the way to the end.

This kind of "humor" doesn't appeal to me -- I love to laugh and bellow at funny things -- and as such I would recommend this book only to moms who get a kick out of snarky, disdainful, and judgmental observational humor and "analysis." I was rather disappointed by this book when I wanted to like it.

I've never written a review of a book before (at least I don't think I have), but I just had to lay down my feelings about my favorite comic strip series. The whole anti-humor is a bit confusing to me as I don't think I've ever laughed as hard at a comic strip as with the "Jim" strips. Maybe the anti-humor thing comes from the refreshing lack of cynicism.

Jim's life feels real -- it's like watching another person's life unfold with all of their personal thoughts out in the open. You become attached to Jim as he goes through his mundane daily activities. The humor, weirdness and sadness in Jim's life resonates more because you feel you are connecting to a real person rather than some wise-ass talking cat.

If you like 'Pathetic Geek Stories' and 'Life in Hell' you'll love this book. If you can't find the collection make sure to pick up the five individual books offered on Amazon.

A must-have for anyone with a decent sense of humor

I fell in love with Jim in college. One night, several years later, he popped into my head. I got out of bed and started looking up Jim's Journal on the internet. When I found this book, I was ecstatic!! It was so great to read some of my favorites that I remember from college.

Also, if you're a cat-lover, Jim provides some poignant, yet hilarious, reflections on owning a cat.

We all have a little bit of Jim in us.

Who is Jim? For ten years, readers of selected daily newspapers wondered that same thing. Even more, though, they wondered, "Why is Jim?"

"Jim's Journal" was a ten-year-running comic strip which revolved around some average guy living an average life. He had average friends, worked average jobs, and did pretty much less than you or I do on your slowest day. Only, Jim kept a journal, where he would write all about what he did.

"I made some brownies today," he would write. "They were pretty good."

"Mr. Peterson [Jim's cat] ran into the other room," would be another typical entry.

"Today, I took a nap. I woke up at 6 o'clock and wondered whether it was day or night."

And those were the punchlines. There were no jokes to speak of. Only snippets of a boring day. However, there was something redeemable about Jim... He was the pinnacle of Anti-Humor! He wasn't funny, he did nothing remarkable from day to day (although he did get married, in a three-strip special entry)... and yet, this collected edition of all the published "Jim's Journal" cartoons is tremendously difficult to find without paying a premium price, even though it is less than 10 years old!

Readers fall in love with Jim, despite himself.

Always puts a smile on my face - like Ruth!!

I find this comic strip absolutely hilarious, as well as charming, poignant, life-like, and sometimes a little melancholy. College students will relate to many of Jim's mundane life experiences, but so will many others simply growing up and living day to day. Jim himself is definitely an observant little fellow, who quietly finds humor in the cliched, sometimes obnoxious sentences his surrounding workmates and friends constantly spew out: it's these moments within the strip where I can't stop laughing. Mostly, though, Jim relates more sober moments about walks, work, eating, his cat, daydreaming, sleeping, and the life and times of his handful of friends. Jim is just a normal guy who probably unconsciously holds back his real emotions in his journal, with the result that the other characters come across much clearer. Speaking of Jim's "handful of friends," here they are:

Tony: the funniest dude in the strip. Where Jim is quiet, Tony is louder and more obnoxous; where Jim simply observes life passively, this guy has an opinion about everything, and is sure to tell anyone within his path how he feels. Tony is famous for going through phases and boasting about how smart he is (drinking 6 glasses of water a day; collecting coupons to save money; attempting jobs to conquer the world, etc., etc.).

Steve: this guy also has his funny moments; he's kind of like a much less aggressive Tony, perhaps somewhere inbetween Jim and Tony in terms of personality. He has academic problems at first, but seems to eventually find his niche.

Ruth: Jim meets Ruth at McDonalds, and the rest, as they say, is history. Ruth is cheery, fun-loving, somewhat non-descript, and sort of in the background most of the time, even when she's hanging around with the rest of the crew.

Also of note is Mark, Joel, Julie and Hal, all workmates of Jim, and all very distinct personalities.

It's hard to say who would latch onto Jim's Journal and who wouldn't, but I know I liked it from the very beginning.

A great book

If you haven't heard of Jim's journal and you ended up here because as a fan of the Onion you wanted to see what Scott Dikkers once did, then you're in for a pleasant (or unpleasant time) people are completely polarized by Jim - either you love the strip or you hate it. I love Jim. Don't bother buying any of the single collections when you can own the whole Jim Treasury. Also included in this book (and missing from the other stand alone books i.e. I got married, I made some brownies) is an introduction for each of these books in the collection. Plus you get various insight into the characters and strip from Dikkers in some revealing passages that are both laugh out loud funny and kind of sad. If you are a fan of meta comedy - i.e. comedy that is funny because it is done in such a blank fashion that its hard not to laugh - if only for the absurdity of the whole thing - then this book is for you. If the idea of a comic strip where the punchline for a strip is "when I woke up from my nap I was even more tired than I was before" leaves you scratching your head - then you should probably buy some Marmaduke or Garfield. Maybe a collection of Hagar the Horrible would be best. On the other hand, if you like things that don't always make sense - buy this book. You'll love it.

The best nuggets of wisdom are short and have an obvious point. Some add in the additional quality of being humorous and others historical relevance. All forms of such wisdom are regularly found in the "Quotable Quotes" feature of Reader's Digest. This book is a collection of those quotes organized according to topic. Some of the topics are:

*) If you can't make a mistake . . .
*) He who hesitates . . .
*) Be bold in what you stand for ...
*) Manners are the happy way . . .
*) The difference between a hero and a coward ...

And they are all leaders into significant messages. There are few books where random reading is always enjoyable, this is one of them.

The quotes vary from subjects as diverse as cats, religion, self-esteem, marriage, happiness, children, humor, the American Dream, finance, injustice, personal problems, politics, expert opinions, the natural world, and much more.

Three of my favorite quotes are: "Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors" (p. 166); "Freedom is the oxygen of the soul" (p. 189); and "No one ever paid the price of a book--only the price of printing it." (p. 138). The latter quote is a good one to apply to this book of quotes!

that I had to buy THREE copies of the first book, because it would 'disappear' when I lent it to friends. I certainly wore out the binding of each copy myself, because it was one of the funniest books I'd ever read hands down. Naturally, when the sequel, "Revelation X" hit the shelves, I needed to have it, even though I knew I'd already given enough money to these raving hucksters(I mean, I loved the Church-bought the mebership and all). While not as side splittingly funny as the first one, this is still light years ahead of any other humor books. Each SubGenius book is literally crammed with things to read and look at, artwork and rants and gag philosophy from embittered nerds all over the world apparently, all about the mythical figure of Bob Dobbs and his plan to save us from the maw of the Conspiracy that is perpetuated by so-called normal people to destroy noncomformity. Obviously, if you are the shy, intellectual type with a truckload of inner rage and a brain that no one appreciates or understands, then this is your bible. Women Subgenii take note: there's a chapter devoted just to you. Enjoy one of the last decades' coolest in-jokes.

Do you like adventure books? If you do here's a book. Bone is a great book. Phoney Bone and his cousin Smiley Bone have a Rat creature cub. They go up to the Mountains and try to let it go. But they run into two other Rat creaatures. Will they make it away? Read to find out. Recommended for all cartoon lovers.

We have been patiently awaiting the release of what appears to be another printing of this book. My 8 year old really doesn't like to read...except for the Bone Series. I haven't read them yet but my 12 year old likes them also. I'm just happy to find something he will willingly read. Thank you Jeff Smith!

Just a question...

I have the other four Bone books and they are all in color and have Bone volume_ in the title. Is this book in the same series and in color or do I just have newer or older versions of these graphic novels. I love these books and i just want to know the answer to this question so I don't make a bad buy off Amazon.

Thanks...

"Rock Jaw: Master Of The Eastern Border" is the fifth volume in the nine volume Bone series, which makes it the halfway point. Once again Jeff Smith has done an excellent job of blending humor, mystery and fantasy to create a great tale of adventure

This volume is one great chase sequence, following Fone and Smiley in their adventure where they try to return Bartleby (The Rat Cub) to his people. Along the way they meet the two outcast Rat Creatures, Rock Jaw, an unusual group of orphans, the possum kids, and Kingdok and his Rat Creature followers. Smith is ingenious in mixing in dialogue that advances the overall adventure, with the action of the chase. We learn more about Thorn, the history of the area, and other aspects of the story, even though Thorn, Rose, Lucius, and Phoney don't appear at all.

British humor, God's love - what a great combination

A light-hearted look into a Christian's struggle to be of more service to God, even though he feels completely unprepared, ill-equipped and lacking in talents and traits that would be so useful in ministry. It's a great moment when he realizes that if God called him into service, God knew what he was doing, and it is God's problem that he has all these deficiencies, not his.

This book is very easy to read. I finished it in two afternoons.
I can't remember the last book I read that made me laugh so hard. This is really, really funny! Regardless of your denomination or doctrine, I think anyone would really enjoy this book.

My wife and I both laughed out loud... Repeatedly.

We both thouroughly enjoyed this book. Funny, without being sacreligious. Probably funnier to an active Christian as many of the jokes are 'insider' jokes that wouldn't be funny to a non-christian.

I'm planning to buy/read more of Mr. Plass' books based on this one.

This book got me addicted to Plass!

Friends in the UK sent us this book a few years ago, and I can't thank them enough. Adrian Plass has now outranked Frank Peretti and Max Lucado as my favorite author of all time. He has an amazing ability to make the reader laugh out loud, and on occasion, even cry. I am an avid reader and no other writer has ever touched my soul the way that Plass does. Whenever I am having a particularly rough day, I read a few favorite parts of this book and I find the stress melting away.

Do yourself a favor and start building a library of his works. I am doing that now, and can honestly say that I have not been disappointed by anything I have read so far. If you live in the US, it can be hard to find Plass's books. But it is well worth the investment and the time.

Excellent, excellent book!

I've read this book about three or four times now and I can safely say that it is the absolute funniest piece of Church humour I've ever read.

Scratch that. This is THE funniest book I've ever read. The first time I read it, I was rolling on the floor and crying. My wife and I will still sometimes just pick it up and start reading bits from it to each other for a few minutes of hilarity.

I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Your enjoyment will be greatly increased if you've spent time attending an evangelical church. It also helps to know that the book was written by a Brit and includes a number of references to people and practices that may be lost on those not from the UK.

Buy this book. It may not change your life but it'll be sure to give you a much needed break from your read through Calvin's "Institutes".
