May Bird-Among the Stars

May Bird- Among the Stars, by Jodi Lynn Anderson, is a fun fantasy fiction. It is also a sequel to the first book, May Bird and the Ever After.
May Bird- Among the Stars is about May Bird, and her journey through the world of ghosts. She is traveling with her friends, Pumpkin, a house ghost, Beatrice, who is looking for her mother, Captain Fabbio, who is looking for his lost crew, and Somber Kitty, May's hairless cat from home. As you might know from the first book, May and Kitty aren't dead, and soon find that they are not alone. There's a secret colony of "un-dead" underground.
I loved this book, because it's filled with adventure. If you liked the first book, you'll love this. Will May save everyone? Will Beatrice be reunited with her mother? Will May and Kitty get back home? Find out here!

well, i must say this book rocked. Its the second book in a trilogy, starting out right where May Bird and the ever after left off. Its about a timid young girl who finds friends in unexpected places and grows in bravery. The "crew" travels around the ever after, searching for the fabled North Farm and the lady who is calling to May. There are many suprises, like when the location of Beatrice's mother is found, when the group of the undead is found, and the face-off with May and Bo Cleevil. It shows how May learns to see past her fear, and to be brave for the sake of the world (or the dead world, at least). The action isnt overdone, and it doesnt have a hero who is good at everything. Nothing exceedes the limit of what any normal girl May's age could do. I really think that in the third book, May will return to the ever after, although the reason is uncertain. (like when it says at the end " how could May leave? For here was where her friends lay, and where a world needed her" or something close to that. I really look forward to the third book, and would recomend this to anybody. Happy reading!

What happens when you're lost in a strange world and need to find your way home? If you're May Bird, you enlist the help of some unique friends, face the bad guys head-on, and believe that you'll get home, no matter what.

May Bird Among the Stars is the second book in a trilogy. It picks up right where the first book, May Bird and the Ever After, leaves off. May is the only living human in the Evil After, where ghosts and the undead roam. She and her loyal cat, Somber Kitty, must escape before the evil Bo Cleevil finds them.

This book does just what the middle book in a trilogy should do: continue the story set up in the first book, offer changes, dangers, and rewards to existing characters, introduce new characters, and have skirmishes with the villains.

May Bird Among the Stars is just as funny and well-paced as its predecessor. It delicately balances the humorous bits with the scary parts, and is intelligent enough to engage adults while fun enough for the target audience of kids.

As soon as the third and final book comes out, I plan to read it all in one sitting. I am quite anxious to see how this wraps up!

If your a Big Anne Rice fan like I am, then you should definately read these books! Anne goes so deep into the lives of this family of whiches that you allmost begin to feel as if you were one of them. And Anne's books are never creepy or full of spells or any of that, her books tell what it might be like in her mind to be one of them and to go through their every day routines as we do.

The Mayfair series are my very favourite Anne Rice books. I have never loved a set of books as much as I love these.
The Mayfairs are a curious bunch. Not every one will like them as much as I do.
The characters are wonderful. I love Rowan and Michael (the two predominant characters) but there are so many others that you meet in the second and third books that I love also.
The family history, written by the Talamasca, always fascinates me. I love reading about the 13 witches, from Suzanne to Rowan.

If you are someone looking for a book about witches casting spells and riding broomsticks, you're in the wrong place.
If you like Anne Rice, I highly recommend these books!

I think that is the ultimate question that must be asked about this serial novel. It is a work extraordinary for its characters and subtlety, as well as a plot that engages readers through the end of book 6 and leaves them wanting more.

I read horror fiction occassionally, but I believe this is more Southern Gothic than horror. While Elinor is a disturbing beast/creature, the reader identifies with her much better than with the human matriarch, Mary-Love. Likewise, the love that is described between Oscar and Elinor is touching and, other than his ghastly death, is rather sedate in its course.

Truthfully, when the last book is done, you don't long for another grisly death, but merely another window into the the lives of this family. When I closed book 6, I missed Elinor, I missed her family, and I wanted to know what was next for Lilah, Billy Bronze, Tommy Lee, and all the others.

Their story is haunting, and it stays with you. Ask around - those who have read this series will remember the characters, and will recall them fondly, even if they'd rather not meet up with them in the water . . .

the creepiness continues...

'The House' is the third installment of Michael McDowell's southern gothic novel series. Actually, it seems to me all these books are literally part of the same book but for whatever reason the publisher divides them into small chunks. There is literally a seamless transition moving between books.

If you are reading this review I trust you have read the preceding two books in the series. If not, go directly to the first in the series ('The Flood') and get started! Otherwise ... what can I say? 'The House' is exactly what you'd expect. Great characterizations, atmospheric, with a slow but infectious story. It seems that women wear the pants in this series; perhaps this is a statement of life in the old South?

Bottom line: Blackwater III doesn't disappoint. Recommended.

For those who are tired of horror novels and stories that are nothing but superflous sex, spewing entrails and heads lopped off, this is your horror novel. It's subtle, thought provoking, emotionally compelling and still a wonderful horror read full of ghosts and nonhuman creatures. It follows a family through several generations, and often reads like a daytime soap opera, then, seemingly out of nowhere, the horror or supernatural enters. This a a wonderful read.

In book 3 of this 6 book series, Miriam is growing up completely spoiled by Mary-Love, while Frances develops an overwhelming fear of the closet in the spare room. Carl Strickland returns to Queenie and beats her, whereas Elinor takes it upon herself to dispose of Carl in her own way. The depression hits, and when Oscar asks his mother for the money to save him from default, she refuses in an attempt to control him and bring him back from the influence of Elinor. But Oscar severs his ties with her, borrowing the money from his uncle instead, leaving Mary-Love out of favor. James' daughter Grace returns from college in defeat, and takes little Frances on a trip up the Perdido river to its source, where Frances falls deathly ill. Only Elinors baths help her through her crippling illness.
When she is better, the family decides to take a vacation all together, but just before leaving Elinor and Mary-Love have a final show down; Elinor confronting Mary-Love with all of her underhanded and mean tricks.
Just as they are ready to leave at the train station, Mary-Love falls quite ill, and Elinor stays home to care for her. But Mary-Love dies mysteriously anyway, and Sister returns home, abandoning her marriage to take care of Miriam.
Don't miss this series, you will have to find them in the used book stores but they are worth the search. Creepy, languid tales of the old south told in such flowing prose that you feel the heat and humidity, along with becoming a part of the small town and its gossip.

Watcher Series

Review Date: 2008-06-18
This is the fifth book in the Watcher Series by Lilith Saintcrow and I think it is one of the best. I love this series and I am so glad she is continuing to write it.

Caroline Robbins is a Mindhealer, she heals normal and witch minds that have been disturbed or destroyed by the Dark. She has had one Watcher killed in front of her and doesn't want to have it happen again. She is adamant that she will not have a Watcher. She and her brother are both in Circle Lightfall, they were orphans when they were discovered by a Watcher. She is much more powerful than her brother. But they are devoted to each other.

Merrick is a Watcher, he keeps his secrets deep and darkly hidden, like most Watchers he knows his life had no value until he became a watcher. Now he is at a point of despair, when Watchers reach that point they usually take one to many chances and wind up dead. He is on patrol when he sees a bunch of dark koroi, they are after a Lightbringer in a small car, he rushes to her aid and finds Caro. He also finds his witch. The one who takes away his pain. Only a few lucky Watchers have found their witch and bonded to her. The only problem is that Caro doesn't want him.

However, there is a new element rising in the world, the Crusade has joined with another group and they are experimenting on people and psychics. Only Caro has a chance to understand and defeat the danger, and Merrick is determined that she will not die.

I love this book and it expands the world and the dangers of the witches who make up Circle Lightfall. Can hardly wait for the next one.

Another home run for a very talented author who ranks right in there with Laurell K Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, and a number of other best selling authors. Once again characters that are believable and likable spun into a tale that is totally engrossing and leaves one flipping the pages until the wee small hours of the morning. Less graphically violent than the Dante Valentine series but every but as addictive!

An excellent addition to the Watcher series, Mindhealer deals with young witch Caro who meets her watcher, the British, Merrick, and helps solve the mystery of the normals and paranormals who are being made into an army for the Dark side.

Though the witch and watcher have similar personality traits to previous characters in the series (that is a must when dealing with how Saintcrow's watcher-world works), this book has a well-rounded cast of other paranormal characters. Saintcrow's beautiful language and movie-worthy fight scenes do not disappoint.

3.5 Stars - This time it will take both Watcher and Witch and the powers of both the body and mind to keep the 'Dark' in check

Review Date: 2008-05-11
Mindhealer takes Saintcrow's Watcher series in a slightly different direction, but don't fear at the core of the book is still the bonding of the Lightbringer Witch and Watcher pair. Unlike the previous Watcher books, in Mindhealer we are at last are brought into the world of the Lightbringers. In the previous books the four witches and their Watchers stood outside of this society, but here we get a glimpse of the community with both Witches and a garrison of Watchers as it is under attack by the Dark. There also is more of a sense of a larger background plot than the previous books with new and more challenging elements of the Dark for the Watchers to combat.

If you've read the previous books you'll remember that the innately compassionate Witches' souls shine so brightly that they attract evil dark monstrous creatures bent on the Witches' destruction or enslavement. Standing at a Witch's side to keep her safe from the 'Dark' is a Watcher with his vow to 'duty, honor and obedience', equipped to fight the Dark because of his own stained soul and the dark symbiant he carries within himself. The powerful symbiant gives the Watcher strength and healing power, but at a price since the darkness of the symbiant means that the Watcher endures great pain in the presence of the Witch's lightness. But even as he suffers to earn his redemption there is hope for a Watcher, there is the promise that one day he will find the 'one Witch just for him', the one that brings him pleasure instead of pain, the one Witch who will bring him peace.

In Mindhealer witch Caro, who is in denial about her vulnerability to the Dark, has refused to have a Watcher of her own. Her first and only Watcher having sacrificed his life to protect her, she can't stay the thought of endangering another protector. Watcher/Tracker Merrick is walking the edge of Watcher despair, and no longer acts as personal guard to individual Witches instead he patrols the city to keep the Dark at bay. But when Caro stumbles into danger on Merrick's watch, Merrick discovers that Caro is `his Witch' and is released from his other duties to stay at her side and protect her. But keeping Caro safe is going to be no easy job. With new more powerful elements of the Dark targeting Caro's rare mindhealing powers there is more danger for Caro and Caro's own determination to keep Merrick from danger, makes it even more difficult to do his job.

Many of the elements that made the previous books enjoyable are here in Mindhealer, the strong minded heroine and the dark powerful self-sacrificing hero who struggles to accept the 'undeserved' salvation to be gained through the bond with his Witch. This is starting to feel pretty familiar, but I am still not tired of it yet. Like the previous books there is a physical connection between the pair, which doesn't necessarily result in a love scene in all of the previous books, here we did get to see the culmination Watcher/Witch bond but Saintcrow's love scenes are very understated. If you are familiar with Saintcrow's Dante Valentine series, the Witches and Watchers inhabit the same world and if you enjoy Saintcrow's writing you will likely enjoy the Watchers -- they are great dark and tortured warriors -- even though the books in Saintcrow's Watcher series are much more single threaded and shorter than her mainstream novels.

The Circle Lightfall is stunned by the brutal assaults as they are clueless who is behind these horrific attacks that leave the victims body and soul broken. The Watcher/Tracker patrol the perimeter and more expanding their protective role from individual witches to the city, but have failed to prevent the vicious muggings.

The Circle Lightfall chooses Mindhealer Caro Robbins to investigate though they are concerned as she refuses to have a Watcher at her side; she has suffered survivor guilt ever since a Watcher sacrificed himself to save her life. When the Dark minion attacks her, Merrick the patrol Watcher rescues Caro. He realizes she is his Witch, which means he is to personally protect his beloved, but the Mindhealer rejects his protection. Frustrated as Caro enters dangerous scenarios, Merrick proves as obstinate as she is; going where she goes even though she objects. Love is a dangerous thing when two stubborn people insist on keeping the other safe while facing deadly encounters.

The latest Dark and Light war is a fascinating tale with the added twist of a Watcher who finally finds his redemption only to have his one decline. The story line is action-packed from the onset and never slows down, a trademark of Lilith Saintcrow's Dante Valentine tales as well as this terrific saga. The lead couple is a wonderful pairing as each needs to keep the other safe for differing motives; her because of watching a Watcher die for her and him because it is part of his "DNA". Fans will enjoy MINDHEALER, a delightful "Watcher" romantic fantasy.

Dobie tells the story of the impact that the introduction of the horse had on life in the Americas, with an emphasis on the American West. His historical research is good, citing a number of written sources (and even giving new perspective on Fremont or Pike).

But the real color of the book comes from his anecdotes, many of which come from discussions with cowboys and mustangers who lived through the final days of the open range in the American West. Great color, great stories throughout!

Highly entertaining, yet with good research and historical value. Wonderful insight into the character of horses.

I'm not sure why, but this book just completely captured my imagination and ran with it. This is one of m favorite books of all time. What I really love, though, is the copy I read was a musty old tome, probably printed in the 30s or 40s, from my library, that just had the mosr wonderful smell and the comfortable, dusty feel. If at all possible, read a copy like that.

Review Date: 2005-01-08
My major was "Spanish North American History," and my wife and I developed a ranch and bred horses for more than ten years. So, this book was down my alley. In fact, it was a book of assigned reading in a course I took. It is primarily about the Spanish BARB that the Spaniards brought to America, and that became the root stock of Mustangs that still run wild in many western states. They have bred into themselves qualities that make them special, especially as cow ponies, and explain why they are sometimes referred to as "rock horses," because they do not need to be shod. Dobie is as much a story teller as he is a historian with a style most becoming. He was born in the 1800s and knew the people and the times of which he speaks. Mexicans were most familiar with Mustangs, but the Plains Indians learned to handle them and became great riders in their own right, as when on the hunt. The Mustang was essential to the time in which they existed, and were the catalyst for the life-style of their day. Wealth was counted in the number of horses a brave had, and horse stealing was the avocation that pitted tribe against tribe at the expense of human life as well as horse flesh, much of which was eaten. Whites ate them, too, usually when either they or their horses played out. Times have changed, but there is another book that as a sequel to this one expresses the way in which it changed. I refer to A BEAUTIFUL, CRUEL COUNTRY, by Eva Antonia Wilber-Cruce who was born about the turn of the 20th century, and raised in Southern Arizona. The rock horses played a significant role in their lives when horses were still essential in such a rough land. I recommend The Musangs be read first, then Eva's book, for those who even yet have a fondness for horses. If I were still raising horses, I would, after reading these books, look seriously for a rock horse I could call my own. I cannot believe how much I learned from reading Dobie's book. Little is left to the imagination.

Wow.

What would the Old West have been without the Mustang? Frank Dobie regales the reader with tales ranging from the legendary Pacing White Mustang to more obscure but nonetheless fascinating legends such as Blue Streak and Starface, to insight into the mysterious origins of the breed.

I read this book for the first time years ago, and I still can't get enough of it! This book is must-read for any horse lover or Wild West enthusiast!

Wayne Courtois delivers an Odyssey of extreme-bondage and tickle-torture sure to elicit gasps and groans in equal measure. My Name is Rand explores new sexual territory where men are bound and tickled to the point of madness, submitting completely to their master's desires. This goes well beyond the typical S&M scenes you've become accustomed to; Wayne Courtois takes you on a strange and intensely erotic journey you've never yet imagined.

The narrator starts off exploring his unique fetish with a tickle-master met online, but is abducted before he can return home. He is removed to The Compound, a tickle-torture camp where people are literally tickled to death. He is run through a gauntlet of tickling and bondage that leaves him near madness, and then left to face the nemesis of Dred Junior, a psychotic who can mentally tickle you. The narrator stumbles upon a hiding place where other inmates are planning escape, and they take spiritual and sexual solace in one another.

Already becoming a cult classic among foot and tickle fetishists worldwide, My Name Is Rand is a powerful and delirious novel which will introduce you to a whole new world of sex play. Welcome to your new fetish.

This novel is a beautifully crafted piece of literature with heartbreakingly real characters and a plot that is fantastic yet grounded. Mr. Courtois is a gifted writer with an ear for real dialogue and a complete understanding of the power of tickling as a tool for torment, as a potently erotic activity and as the ultimate expression of domination. His world is drenched with the most vividly rendered scenes of tickling ever produced. The novel defies easy classification, but admirers of science fiction will be pleased as will students of human nature, for there is deep insight into the dark parts of humanity here. Of course, fans of erotic tickling of men will relish this book as the finest example of its kind in print.

I was bowled over by the sheer force of the writing. Mr. Courtois is a major new force. His writing is elegant, effective and strong. He has a voice. His imagination is amazing and his ability to implement his vision is impressive.

I long for more from this writer.

It's more than a riveting look at the erotic world of tickling, it's an excitement-packed, non-stop thriller about a hidden compound where men are abducted and subjected to an assortment of extraordinary tickling scenarios. What could have been a banal bit of erotica dolled up in a silly fantasy is instead a gripping tale of escape, survival and carnal torment. And it's all courtesy of Wayne Courtois' astonishing flair for seamlessly blending purple prose with plot-driven action.

With an individualistic voice that gives erotica a touch of class and raises the bar for his peers, Courtois totally enmeshes you in the lead character's experience. His absorbing imagining of Rand, a trustee at the hidden compound, highlights his skill as a writer with the keen ability to express the unique perspective of someone who'd once been victimized by the denizens of the tortuous compound, but now jadedly aids the victimizers. He creates not only compelling characters, but also torrid tickling situations intermingled with the heart-stopping action.

When you finish reading My Name Is Rand, you shake your head at the writer's ability to instantly invert the real world and pull you so far into it's pages that you devour it with the avidity usually provoked by an epic best-selling thriller. As you journey along with Rand and his daring band of compound escapees you realize that, among the handful of true superstars in erotic fiction, Wayne Courtois is primed to take his place on the throne.

From the gripping first chapter to the surprise ending, this book weaves a wonderfully vivid and sensuous spell.
A riveting exploration of a rare fetish, this first person narrative has real energy and drive. Psychological and metaphysical aspects are skillfully and , yes, surprisingly well blended, Surprising because present day novels, particularly erotic ones, are not known for taking into account the spiritual realm. This one does and the effect is NOT either contrived or forced, but an integral and important part of the story.
This novel is both inspiring and provocative. Rare qualities in any novel, let alone an erotic one.

This book contains the most extreme male tickle-torture I've read anywhere - as well as subtle treatment of much bigger ideas than I expected. Terrific prose, overwhelming action, challenging food for thought. Extra-dark, completely relentless, with some "paranormal" tickling in there too (a personal favorite)... and a fair amount of explicit gay sex. Some great plot twists, too. I'm impressed beyond words that this book was written - and published. The torturous possibilities of tickling have been overlooked for far too long. Personally, I bought it despite the sexual content - as written descriptions of tickling go, it's THAT good.

This book was fantastic not only for children but for all ages. It is gripping, suspenseful and doesn't need to rely heavily on violence or graphic imagery to convey its more than adequate fright factor. It's cute and to the point, not bothering with overtly flowery prose and keeps you glued until the last word. I must say however that the ending left me wanting a sequel. I highly suggest this if you like a good, light mystery.

If you don't read TJ Perkin's books, you're missing some reading joy in life. I have read both of her books and I can tell you, your children will enjoy reading them and so will you. TJ gives a story that extra touch, a touch that will grab your reading interest and hold it until you're simply finish with the book.
Then you will want to go out and find some more TJ Perkin's.

Thirteen-year-old Melissa's mom remarries, and their house isn't big enough for Melissa's new stepdad and his daughter, Becky. Melissa doesn't mind moving, really. She and her mom have moved plenty of times. What is different for Melissa is that this time they are sharing the ancient farmhouse. And it's not just Dad and Becky that she's got to get used to. She's certain there is something, someone, in the attic. Melissa bonds with her new stepsister as they try to unravel and amend the secrets that the home has held for centuries. The haunting only occurs when the girls are alone, so they are forced to fight the evil without help from their skeptical parents. However, the spirit of a kind young man comes to their aid, in the hope that by righting past wrongs he will be released to, at long last, rest in peace. Reminiscent of Nancy Drew or The Hardy Boys, MYSTERY OF THE ATTIC will captivate young readers and their parents alike. This book gives validation to every child whose Mom has ever uttered, "Nobody's on the roof, honey, it's just the wind blowing in the trees." And although this novel has a gratifying conclusion, I anxiously await its sequel. TJ Perkins is an author to watch.

Nail biting suspense!

In her second novel, author TJ Perkins has managed to create a story that captivates and compels the reader into the adventures of Melissa and her stepsister Becky as they try to unravel the mystery. Her writing is clear, crisp and written with such genuine care for the subject and the characters that you can't help but be drawn in. I found that with my own child, it kept her interested, and was not a chore for her to finish; she enjoyed it from cover to cover, as did I. Add to this that the author writes from her own experiences when she was 13, and this makes for a gripping tale that is near to impossible to put down once you start.

I hope there are more books to come from the mind of TJ Perkins, and I for one will be reading them as quick as I can get my hands on them.

"The Mystery of the Crying Ghost" is a book about Chloe Wendleton. She is a young girl who is having difficulty adjusting to a different school. She just feels like she doesn't fit in at all. She has her two dependable pets to keep her company. Killian is her golden retriever and Isis is a Himalayan cat. Her family tells her that she is just hearing things when she says that she hears a child crying.

Is it all in her imagination? Isis and Killian seem to hear the same crying. Chloe goes up into the attic with her grandfather and discovers an old newspaper. It shows that the Van Hise children, Sarah Jane and Thomas, somehow disappeared from the house without a trace. She shares the information with two of her classmates. Will Reed tells Chloe that he had heard that the house she is living in is haunted. Will is what one would call a "brain" so he gets picked on a lot. He is defended by Maya Roubideaux and her karate skills. Will is suffering from a major crush on Chloe, but his knowledge is a key to solving the case. Just when Chloe, Will and Maya can't seem to put a hand on any clues, the animals lend a paw and make discoveries of their own.

"The Mystery of the Crying Ghost" will capture the attention of any sleuth who enjoys a good story, adorable animals and friends working together towards a goal. With more books like this one, Rita Hsu Syers could easily have created another "Nancy Drew." I'm happy that she is planning her next mystery and can't wait to read it!

This book is great! Loved it!

The debut novel of author Rita Hsu Syers, Mystery of the Crying Ghost is a novel written for young adults ages 8-12, about a young fifth-grade girl named Chloe who has a hard time adjusting to her new home. Settling into a new school and making new friends is rough, her grandfather is terribly overworked, and strange noises come from her house at night - noises that no one else notices except her beloved dog and cat. When Chloe glimpses a child peering at her from the window of an empty room, she discovers that her house is haunted by spirits who suffered a terrible tragedy fifty years ago. Chloe seeks to uncover the mystery behind the tragedy, but she needs help; grown-ups don't believe her, so she turns to two classmates, a sharp-minded genius boy and a courageous girl who studies karate, ready and willing to discover her house's hidden secret. Highly recommended for public and middle school library shelves.

The Mystery of the Crying Ghost: (A Chloe Wendleton Mystery) is the first of many great stories to come. The second night I started reading it, I started back up at Chapter 5 and it kept me up until 3 am, because I had to finish it!
Although this book is written for children and young adults, I, being in my early twenties, found a lot of humor and interest in it, and found that it truly resembles a modern day Nancy Drew novel.
The best part about this book is that aside from the crying ghost, (and I don't want to give anything imporant away) the story draws upon historical facts and scientific ideas. It takes place in Bucks COunty, too! Which is the best setting for a mystery...

Life after Howard . . . and before the Countdown to Mystery

It would be wrong to judge Steve Gerber by just one comics story.

But if there is one story that captures most of his sensibilities as an author in one work it's probably this one. It features the innately bizarre landscape of Las Vegas, musings on good and evil, homeless bums who are secretly super-heroes, and the underlying nature of the Universe (much like Countdown to Mystery: Doctor Fate). It also features a stripper with a pet bird that sometimes seems to talk (not very much like the beloved Howard the Duck, but there is a certain resonance). A hard-boiled crime drama with otherworldly perpetrators going on in the background. There is even a two-bit crime boss with a lava lamp head and a gorgeous mafioso daughter.

I can't figure out how he fit them all in one story.

But he did. It's like watching a magician make an elephant disappear. You know there MUST be a trick. But you can't see how it's done.

If you only want to try one Gerber work. . . maybe this one will whet your appetite. Then come back for the rest.

Another great Gerber character

Nevada (her name) is a Las Vegas stage performer - performing with her pet ostrich, Bolero. She's about as hard a case as any, and keeps it that way. She has a few friends, including a dancer paradoxically named Bianca and the casino's resident geek, Rip. It's a good enough life. There are lots worse lives to live, including wino Ogden Locke's, di Vesuvio's (if you call that living), and the lives being taken in bizarre acts of dismemberment.

That's when her life turns weird. Not just the usual kind of stalker - she can handle that well enough. It's things like ancient Greece appearing in the ladie's loo that get to her, with Locke delivering oracular warnings from his seat on the porcelain throne. But Locke couldn't possibly have been there, and it just goes down hill from there. Against her will (and there's a lot of will), she's off on a hallucinatory journey of transformation. After her trials of spirit, she emerges as ...

Well, see for yourself. She's about halfway between Moore's "Promethea" and Ennis's "The Pro" in humor and attitude, though she precedes both by a few years. Gerber has driven innovation in comics since the 1970s, with his landmark "Howard the Duck." This work unites his writing with some of the best comic art and lettering in the industry. This looks like the opening chapters of a story that was never finished, but what's here is easy to enjoy.

Gerber's very best comics work in the 1990s

This book exhibits all the quirkiness, along with amazingly believable and likable characters, that made Gerber's classic work at Marvel (on "The Defenders," "Tales of the Zombie," "Man-Thing," "Omega the Unknown," and "Howard the Duck") such joys to read and re-read. "Nevada" is further strengthened by the way the realistic art of Phil Winslade makes "Nevada" feel very matter-of-factly, even while its main character is facing hoards of extra-dimensional monsters, or falling to pieces during a mind/body spiritual test that becomes a little too literal.

"Nevada" is a joy to read and re-read.

Among the Best Comics of All Time ...

What can I say ... the short series collected in this volume has a real woman for the lead character, vivid characterisation, heaps of intelligence, a sharp critique of modern society and humanity in general, and an exposition of an existentialist, yet non-materialist philosophy unlike anything you'll find elsewhere in comics. The fantastic milieu of Las Vegas and alternate dimensions is rendered in a wonderful and realistic style by Phil Winslade ... Clearly, a special labour of love by Gerber and Winslade, which, along with Gerber's Howard the Duck volumes, comes very highly recommended to anyone who loves comics, but wishes more of them had intelligence and soul.

Wow, I'm surprised no one has reviewed this book! Originally a six issue mini-series from DC Comics' Vertigo line, this comic has it all: a beautiful strong woman, who also happens to be a Vegas showgirl, a pet ostrich (named Bolero), a gangster with a lava lamp head, strange murders, and much more. Steve Gerber has written one weird story here, as if Las Vegas wasn't already surreal enough. Nevada, the main character, is a pretty unique woman in the world of comics. She's tough, but more in a psychological way than your typical Amazonesque superheroine or babe with big guns. She's sexy, but in a real and naural way. The artwork is good too, supplied by Phil Winslade and Steve Leialoha. This is probably one of the best Vertigo mini-series ever (along with Peter's Milligan's ENIGMA and Paul Pope's HEAVY LIQUID.) If you like Grant Morrison's stuff, you'll probably like this too. Gritty and surreal just the way you like it!

I read this book to my 2nd grade, ESL students, and they love it! Choral reading is our favorite activity when we read and they just love repeating "Nickety-nackety noo-noo-noo". There's a lot of rhyming in the book which is another good way to make sure that the children are listening. I tend to pause before the last rhyming word to give them a chance to guess what it is.

This story is about an ogre who tries to force a "wee wishy woman" into living in his home and cooking for him and how she stays cool and calm, outsmarts him, and then escapes. The story is written in verse--about one four-line verse per page. My two year old loves this book, but I think an older child (four to eight years old) would enjoy it even more.

With every verse ending with "nicketty nacketty noo noo noo" this book has a lovely repetition that will find your child repeating these lines with you as you read the story together.
The combination of the funny story line and silly words and names such as "Gobbler Magoo" and "Wee wishy woman" make this book a real treat.

Wonderful, great for getting children involved, good-humoured

This is a wonderful story which twists in just the right way to allow children to really enjoy it. The illustrations are perfect. Gorgeously done, lovely colours. It is about an Ogre called 'gobbler magoo' who lives in a swamp where the wild weeds grew.

He captures a 'wee-washy woman' and takes her home to make him a good tasty stew.

She chops and she cuts and she throws it all in, all the time looking sweetly benign. The Ogre eats it up, quickly then more slowly, And then realises that the stew has been made with glue!

The wee washy woman packs up her pots and her pans, and her glue, and walks on - and you wouldn't want to eat any of her stew would you!!!!!!

At the end of every verse is the very irish refrain 'nickety nackety noo noo noo" which the chlidren love chanting.

It is wonderful book which can be frequently re-read. Immensely good fun and good humoured - Highly recommended!!!!
