A strong intellectual perturbationReview Date: 2006-02-15
But because most humans throughout history did not record their experiences, the historian is left wanting for accurate appraisals of these experiences. Diaries, journals, and other personal writings can assist the historian in this regard, and there have been many uses of these throughout the historical literature. It is important to remember though that because of the paucity of these personal documents, one should not be too hasty in imputing the opinions of their authors to the entire population at the time. One cannot view them as representing the "voices of the people" without establishing this with (difficult) statistical analysis.
Sometimes however these documents were written more as a catharsis, as a way of expressing, in a strong and determined way, an idea, grievance, or opposition to the status quo. The opening quotation in the book by Frederick Douglass reinforces this view, for in that quotation Douglass essentially states that power must be challenged before it can be defeated (Douglass does not want to stop with mere words though, for in the same quotation he asserts the need for physical confrontation if necessary).
It is in this light that this book should be read. It is a collection of essays and letters that reveal attitudes that are not the typical ones that one would be exposed to in United States secondary schools. Those readers familiar with the author's earlier book on United States history will appreciate this book even more, but both can be read independently of each other. This is not a book that will please the elitist historian who discounts any view of history that does not magnify the contributions of intellectuals or military leaders over and above the "common" person. It is a book for those who are genuinely interested in the moods and aspirations of the people of a given time, if only from a limited vantage point. It will certainly upset the intellectual equilibrium of anyone who holds to a view of American history that has been sanitized by the educational establishment.

"THE ABC'S OF BREASTFEDING" by Stacey H. Rubin is a MUST READ for any woman planning to breastfeed her first baby or her last. The unique approach in which Ms Rubin tells of her personal experiences as a Mom, a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and a Lactation Consultant, is informative, educational and truly fun to read. As a Neonatal RN, I have come away with an expanded knowledge base that I can use on a daily basis with the parents and babies I care for in the NICU.

Tet was Hell............Review Date: 2002-06-28
Very Good OverviewReview Date: 2002-06-26
The author
provides the reader with a brief, but complete and readable historical background for the war up to 1968. He also gives us
very clear and vivid descriptions of the battles and everyday life of the foot solders. We also get a good run down of the
South Vietnamese corruption that worked against the American effort to save their country. This was the part that really
surprised me the most, it seamed like the South Vietnamese wanted and needed the war to continue to keep the profitable drug
trafficking, smuggling and protection rackets going. What made me furious were the details of the United States supplied
food, gasoline, and equipment that the South Vietnamese were selling to the North Vietnamese.
The author also spends
some time talking about the drug use by the soldiers and the difficult race relations. This section of the book was not as
surprising given that was the same environment in the states at that time. Overall, this book is a well-written and informative,
but not a rundown of overly descriptive bloody fights. He does a wonderful job in describing the environment, how hot it
was the difficulties in moving through the country, the differences in the front line and the support areas. This is a good
book and a great way to introduce yourself to the Vietnam War.
A JOB WELL DONEReview Date: 2005-02-24
The author, I think, has been very even handed with his assessment of the situation we found ourselves in at that time. He does not appear to have an axe to grind, one way or the other. Having served myself, I found the terminology used and the attitudes written about, to be pretty correct. You certainly will want to add this one to your collection and I recommend it's reading very much.

This book would be great for a women's Bible study. Highlighting the Book of Joel, Jan Coleman relives her own failed marriage; comparing that loss to the desolation left by a swarm of locusts. After the Locusts touches on coping with the loss of a loved oned, bankruptcy, dealing with troubled teens, divorce, and much more.
You will want to share this book with a friend. I did!

Xenophon's 350 BC manual on how to take care of a horse and look good riding oneReview Date: 2008-09-29
The text itself is fairly short and reads quickly, sprinkled with wisdom. After the text is another short portion from 1893, which talks about "The Greek Riding-Horse", based on Xenophon and all the other available sources. Additionally, the footnotes to the text are quite interesting--I read them, for the most part, en block after reading the text.
As the title implies, the text is a very hands-on, practical guide to "everything you need to know" about how to take care of and look good riding a horse, reading like a "Horsemanship for Dummies" book. If you're interested in Ancient Greece and horses, you've got to read this short "instruction manual", though if you're only interested in the ancients, it's still fun to breeze through this text, nevertheless.

Thrilling and compellingReview Date: 2008-08-18
I do not like to read books about war, but a friend convinced me to read Steve Wilson's first book, Winter in Kandahar, and I couldn't put the book down. There began my love of Stone Waverly.
So naturally, between Steve Wilson's compelling storytelling and style of writing, I was thrilled to learn of his second book, Ascent From Darkness. I was equally as thrilled to learn that Stone Waverly continues on his journey.
I have not changed my mind and decided to read books on war, but Ascent from Darkness is a book about mysterious happenings wrapped in the most mysterious of all happenings - love.
May Mr. Wilson keep me anxiously turning the pages of Stone Waverly's life adventures for years to come!
P.S. I expect some smart movie producer to purchase the movie rights to both Winter In Kandahar and Ascent From Darkness and turn them into the blockbusters they so deserve to be!
